Hi there! It’s great that Criterion Games has made it to the PlayStation.Blog, so with this first post it’s best that we bring everyone up-to-date with what’s been happening since Burnout Paradise was released at the end of January.
The truth is – we simply haven’t stopped.
We’re into our “Year of Paradise” – 12 months where the Burnout Team keeps on developing exciting new stuff to expand and change Burnout Paradise (and in the process, we aim to radically change what everyone expects of downloadable content).
We’ve so far released our 1.1 update, and our second update, codenamed: “Bogart,” packed with fixes and game-enhancing features.
Now, we’re expecting our third FREE update codenamed: “Cagney” that’s coming on 10th July (yes, that’s FREE – just put your Burnout Paradise disk into your PLAYSTATION 3 and it’ll download automatically), and we’re really excited about it as we count down to its release.
We’re talking:
3 new Online Game Modes
- Online Stunt Run – you and up to 7 others compete for the highest stunt score
- Online Road Rage – where you team up and try to stop the other team from reaching their destination
- Online Marked Man – someone gets called out and everyone else tries to hunt them down
70 new Online Timed Challenges
- Everyone teams up to pull off stunts and other feats in the world, against the clock
New Vehicles (including the Hunter Olympus)
Major improvements to our Ranked Racing system
Plus heaps more, including:
- 1080i support for PlayStation 3 owners with “almost HD” sets
- Improved Standard Definition rendering for PlayStation 3
- Support for Custom Soundtracks on PlayStation 3
Outside of the game, our website, www.criteriongames.com is changing too – we’re posting up to 4 stories daily direct from the team and we now have an audio and video podcast from the team that goes out on a weekly basis. This week’s podcast released on Friday, we’re talking in detail about what to expect in “Cagney” and the other game-changing updates beyond that.
The pace of change here at Criterion is breathtaking, so we’re going to be posting here on the PlayStation.Blog at least once a week to let you know more about what’s happening and what’s coming to Paradise City.

You can use a custom soundtrack in PA!N, but it’s not in-game XMB music. Maybe it’s just a proprietary music player in the game that searches your HDD for music.

I am not entirely sure, but I think the details of Microsoft’s patent cover a custom soundtrack that is handled through the console’s operating system. Having a custom soundtrack which is accessible via an interface programmed into a game, however, is free game. In other words, Sony could provide help with third parties in developing methods within the game to use custom soundtracks and that would be fine. However, this is a rough idea of how the patent might be detailed. I haven’t actually read the thing in a while.

awesome to see that Burnout is still gonna be getting the love all through this year. I wish most devs would adopt this sort of idea and continue to expand their games until the have completed and released their new project. I know expansion cost time and money but it sure would be great to keep their product fresh much like Warhawk. Incognito has done a great job of evolving Warhawk and it looks Criterion aims to do the same. mad props to you guys. Incognito should take notes for their next update (custom soundtracks). But hey, if 2.4 includes custom soundtracks then they don’t have a thing to worry about!

@ 111 – the date of 11th July is because the update has to go through Sony & Microsoft’s various testing and approval processes. The update is finished, it has left Criterion, it just has to flow through the right tubes to get released, and unfortunately these things take time.

Seriously…great game and also a great community on the Criterion blog/site. I love just driving around Paradise City and seeing the different areas and environments. I honestly assumed that when GTA IV came out, I would spend all my time driving around Libery City instead. But for whatever reason, I find myself still playing Burnout Paradise….maybe I just have a hard time adapting to the lower resolution textures and choppy frame rate in GTA IV. But whatever the reason, Burnout Paradise is still my most played game of the year. Only problem is that it was released way back in Janurary and might be forgotten when all of the ‘Game Of The Year’ awards are released at the end of 08.

For me, it’s burnout’s car handling. I would’ve wished the cars would handle the same in GTA. GTA’s stupid car handling turn me off the game (the lack of tanks also…)

I still love you though Sony!!! Please remember that Custom Soundtracks is just as important as in-game XMB.

@desidarious – sorry about that, was 4 in the morning here and I tried posting a link to the article three times but psblog wouldn’t allow it.
Then I thought that I was blocked or something so I posted “very quiet in here” to check if it was just the link that was being blocked. By the time I posted that I was ready to pass out and unable to think so it wasn’t the greatest heads up.
Lets rectify it, Last night a post was made on ps3fanboy which had a screenshot of a new psn id which included trophy’s and the sort. Its still just a rumor right now but it was supposedly conformed by a R&D developer.
No confirmation as of yet, but one thing to keep in mind is that if this is true it looks like a replacement for the current profile which you can access by pressing triangle then profile in the friend section of the xmb. If it is true then it wont be the main way you view your own trophy’s on the xmb, there will be a trophy’s section on the xmb for that by the looks of the 2.40 videos.

I’d just like to note that I just got back from EB and this game, along with Battlefield, came with me. I hope the full game is as good as you all have made it out to be. I played the demo and was a little off put by a “FEW” key things but thought the graphics were great and the collision/wrecks were modled to perfection. I bought this over Grid because it seemed like more than just a racer.
So here’s to the update and me having the game finally!

@gamesblow haters … hey comrades, I find gamesblow’s comments immature and even borderline ridiculous at times myself, but that initial comment about the in-game XMB being over-hyped and his preference for drivers in the cars doesn’t count.
The preference to see a real driver makes perfect sense to me. It doesn’t bother me personally, but I do love how it looks on Gran Turismo for example, so if he doesn’t like the look without, he doesn’t. I can see why Criterion didn’t include drivers, considering the carnage in the game though (although Motorstorm did a good balance on that one I think).
As for his comment about the XMB, he’s completely correct. Access to the XMB from inside the game does NOT mean we’ll have custom soundtracks in all games. You can access the XMB while watching a video too, but if you play music, the video ends. You can access the XMB while listening to music but if you access the store, the music stops too.
Being able to see the XMB and access its features does not necessarily mean being able to do all those things AND play a game at the same time (I can imagine changing video settings on-the-fly might screw with game logic, for example).
Granted, 90% of the rest of gamesblow’s comments I’ve found abrasive and ignorant, but this one’s on the money.

Re: the 1080i output mode, for those who aren’t aware of the math, that’s a 12.5% increase in pixels output (they’re rendering in 960×1080 and then scaling it in software to a full 1920×1080) and they’re saying they can still maintain a full 60fps.
Personally, in a driving game, its the vertical resolution that matters, in terms of being able to make out detail near the horizon on the road, so I’ll be playing this in 1080i (since my TV is 1080i but supports 720p) from now on.
In contrast, I played Drake’s in 720p despite the 1080i option they added for people without 720p support, because I like the added horizontal detail for aiming at tall slim sets of pixels (enemies).
