Firmware v2.40 status

2,454 0

As has been reported on many gaming blogs and websites, we have temporarily taken Firmware v2.40 offline. We’ve received a limited number of calls from consumers experiencing an issue with installing the system software update on their PS3. While our consumer services department has seen a low volume of calls on this topic, we are committed to providing the PS3 community with XMB access features delivered in the v2.40 update. We are working diligently to isolate the problem for those few consumers and to identify a solution before we put the firmware back up.

We’ll provide further information as necessary here on the Blog.

Jeff my PS3 sometimes freezes when I’m in the XMB in games or if I’m on the web browser and checking my friends list to create a message it will sometimes freeze. I installed correctly. It’s not a big deal, but I don’t want it to continue. Thanks

  • And indeed, the Store is runner way faster- apparently there’s a new memory cache feature that stores the images once they’ve loaded once. Love it. :D

  • To everyone

    IN GAME MUSIC

had to be taken out, 2.4 contained it, but MICROSOFT threathened to SUE, YOU NEED THE DEVELOPERS NOT SONY TO PATCH IT, BECAUSE SONY WILL LOSE SO MUCH MORE THAN THEY DID.

  • So whats going to happen to all those people who have bricked systems? Will they get new playstation 3s?

  • @k3coyotes55
just be happy that they’ve worked so hard on this and that they actually did this update…sony could have just ignored all the comments and never given us anything…
by the way sony, great job…the update works great and is a huge step forward…thanks a lot

  • If 2.40 is installed already, there won’t be any problem.

I got it last night so I’m in the clear!

  • Love doctor plz, first get help then come to the forum, wish i could dl the frimware, it should work on my console cus its brand new and i havent installed anything =-)

    @153 joel

Man that sucks. I can’t believe Microsoft is that stubborn to do that man. I can’t believe Micrsoft can’t cut Sony a break. So that was an excuse by Eric Lempel saying it’s the developers choice depending if they wanted it in their game or not? Man this sucks. :(

  • Mine is running flawless. I hope Sony help those how are experience issue and problem. Cheers Sony.

  • @ 140

Yeah everything works perfectly fine, except PStwo games. It’s odd though that I don’t have any other problems like some people have. Hopefully 2.41 will fix the PS2 games issue.

  • Thanks much guys. You got it up earlier than I expected, I updated, worked fine, and you have removed it extremely quickly for those suffering problems. You have absolutely NAILED it with response time and deployment for this monumental update.

Seriously, you guys have been doing a fantastic job of listening to your fanbase and acting upon it. This is the Sony that I look forward to giving my hard-earned money to in times of…. unstable US economy.

Having a blast with SSDHD trophies and I can’t wait to see more from other games. If I experience any issues with the 2.40 I will be sure and give you guys a detailed report… :P

  • Wow microsoft is freaking amazing, they only care about money. Now i really want sony to do something and kick their a$$.

  • +++TO ERIC+++

it should be are choice to have in-game custom music not the developers, your slogen is “this is living” it should be “this is living, by other peoples rules”

seriously you wont even reply to this i know but why cant you give a offical statement on why you couldnt do it i will stop complaing then.

  • Absolutly no problem with this 2.40 firm with a 1st day PS3 (23/03/2007) in France;

Problem is from their hardware, not firmware. Please put 2.40 back or many ps3 owners will be angry.

  • So…..when can we expect 2.41?

  • So what about people that bricked using this firmware and are out of warranty? I think so Sony should not charge the repair fee.

I called Sony CS to get my coffin box and I hope Sony will waive the fee.

  • Okay, so, I have 2.40, I’m enjoying it. I’m okay, right? Nothing can happen to me?

  • No problems here. I instaled the update last night and I really like the new features. Glad to see that Sony is on top of things for those people that have had some issues. Keep up the good wrok Sony.

  • Ah, so that’s what happened. I was freaking out there for a minute. Thought there was something wrong with my PS3. Well, thanks for catching those problems so quickly. Hopefully you can get them all resolved with little difficulty.

  • I dont think Sony has a billion dollars to set aside for warranty repairs for the ps3 like Microsoft did… but then again I could be wrong.

  • i rlly doubt that alot of people got their ps3 killed by the update.

  • No problems here.
    The 2.40 is working fine.

  • I got 2.40 last night around 10pm PDT and it’s been running just fine since then.

I did have one hiccup downloading the Super Stardust HD update, the first time it made the “power on” beep twice and then rebooted. The second time it initiated the download and patched it just fine.

    2.40 rocks!

  • Are they going to give us a status report anytime soon……. PLEASE!!!!!

  • All i can say to everyone who is wining about in-game music not being avaible becuase its sony fault

no its not, they stated that dev need to update there games for it to work
now idk why this is such a big issue but couldnt you wait more? i mena your waited for nearly a year and a half so why not wait longer, i mean would it really kill you.
Just wait bt time a month or 2 passed allot of good games will eb patched. And lets not forget im sure most dev are taking advantage of this as and implementing it into there games right now, and i mean the new games that are coming out soon.

  • What I want in future FW:

1 – Timer: This should be standard with any set top device, Sony. C’mon.

2 – Option to turn that damn clock off.
That’s burn in waiting to happen on my precious 1080P tv that cost too damn much.

3 – Ps1 and Ps2 interpolation update and the ability to scale to fit for all 4:8 games. I have black bars all over my screen when I play Ps1 or Ps2 games.

4 – Web browser update to flash player. It needs it pretty bad.

5 – Auto shut down upon download completion if authorised to do so.

6 – Pre order from the store before a game is released. This would of course mean you’d have to actually start posting games and release dates on your store instead of just tossing junk up there. They would auto download the day they are available this way.

7 – full upscale of all 720P games into 1080I and 1080P so we don’t need to worry about the REZ swap feature on the xmb.

8 – Fully customizable XMB. The option to place the icons where you want and how you want them. If you want them in a line, fine. If you want them all in a folder, fine. I’d love to be able to place my icons where I want them. Games too. Not just in a folder.

9 – Quick list on games and music. Which means I can bring up a list of the last 5 games I played and quickly go to one without all the clicking and traveling around the xmb.

    10 – IN GAME MUSIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

These are some of my ideas and most wanted features of whaT I know I want. If you all agree, let everyone know here. I’d like to see your thoughts on a list too. Nothing will get done if we don’t say what we feel.

  • This really stinks. My cousin got the new firmware and it was awesome. Could someone give me a date/time that this problem will be fixed? Also this update seems like it is a step closer to home with the trophys?

  • @170

Stop trolling, this is a very minor thing, also the reason consoles are briking is because of the HDD. If you clean it completely you can run the firmware for those that got there consoles “bricked”,

  • @ gamesblow

You wont get IN GAME MUSIC, unless there is no XBOX 360, microsoft owns the patent, which is why sony took it out.

  • Someone should have told them what some of us really wanted!

Instead of CUSTOM SOUNDTRACKS just enable our XMB music section for IN GAME USE PLEASE.

-Music content cant not be play during the use of this game- Eric lampell or somebody needs to be smacked

  • I didn’t mean I have a problem I mean I want the firmware even if it is risky

  • @ Joel

That’s the word on the street, but what I mean is a mandate from Sony that all games need patched for music players.

  • That’s too bad, but any plans for you guys to add Blu-ray XMB access? Also it would be nice when we watch a BD movie that we stay connected to PSN and maybe our profiles show what movie we’re watching or at least that we’re watching a BD.

  • i have to say gamesblow, u have some good ideas.. but be nicer come on =-P, its sony not satanic microsoft :)

  • I have had no problems with 2.40 which I downloaded and installed last night….The only thing I notice and keep in mind that I’m not complaining just pointing it out is that the in game XMB seems very unresponsive and extremely slow.

  • 2.4 is working great for me

  • Fuc**** M$ troller, look what you did? And you are happy?
Creating blog, fake videos, fake txt in forums and liying on the great 2.40 firmware.
As your Rodbox, you are very small.

Please Sony, put back this 2.40 or consequences will be worst. sorry for my english.

  • 2.4 screwed up my PS3 AFTER a “successful” install.

Installed last night around midnight. Everything came up, no problem. Turned it off, went to bed.

Today, turned PS3 on and went to play MLB The Show demo. Played the demo without a problem. Went into the in-game XBR. From there, selected quit game.

NEVer got back to the main menu. It just froze on the background of a custom theme.

Reset system by holding in the PS button.

Whe the system came up it said it said that the hard drive needed to be checked (re-indexed?). I said OK. Then it said hard drive needed to be reformatted. I said NO. Had to turn it off by pressing the power button for 3 seconds.

Turned it back on and the system came up but all local content (demos, saved games, pictures, etc…) were GONE. In the system view, it said that only 43GB of 74GB were free on the hard drive. So my stuff was there *someplace* but I couldn’t find it.

After reading through some sites, I just said to heck with it and am reformatting my hard drive to see if that fixed the issues.

BUT, I wanted to mention that this problem happened AFTER a successful install/reboot of the system.

My guess, as a software engineer, is that there is some data race, mutex thing that is hitting some people some times?

  • lol lanod the way u said that… sounds like a threat…. u could get sued for the little money you have!! Lol jk .. Sony pwns btw

  • @187

    completely agree

your going to at least loose me as a customer if i dont get a offical reason why you cant include universal in-game music.

whats the big secret sony ??

  • Doesn’t “in-game” music mean the music that comes with the game? Thus, it is in game? Isn’t what many people desire actually music from an out of game source such as their personal playlists or an external source?

As for the update: I got it this morning and is working fine for me. After experimenting with the new options, I can say that I am very pleased with what we have received. Everything works as we were told that they would. No surprises other than it is a lot easier to sort through everything than I thought it would be. Great job!

Yes, the clock is great, too.

  • cant u guys read what joel said way back……

  • Soo glad I got it last night just before midnight, works like a charm and is pretty much everything I expected!

  • wow

  • My 60GBs PS3 works pretty fine on 2.40.
It’s a shame that others were having problems.

  • Joel, they did not take Music from your hard drive. Its just a patch that comes from developers, stop with the fud. Watch the video walkthrough.

  • No problem here, i have the 20gb model (with a 80gb hard drive)

Thanks for the firmware btw. i tried to get some trophies from stardust, thats nice :)

  • I really want in game music. Sony should put it in even if microsoft sues them. Anyway how can microsoft paten that?

  • Hey Jeff so I installed firmware update 2.40 and I got a serious bug to reproduce; I’ve included the steps below:

Requirements: user has not installed firware update 2.40 and Super Star Dust HD update 4.0

    1. Turn the PS3 and update to firmware update 2.40
    2. Once back on the XMB navigate to the PlayStation store.
    3. Navigate the store for at list a minute or so (go to ‘stuff pics’ etc…)
    4. Quit the PlayStation store, navigate to the list of games stored in the hdd and select Super Star Dust HD
    5. at this point user is prompt to download the latest game update select [OK]

    • Note how right after attempting to download game update ps3 will constantly power cycle several times.
    • Note how after successfully going back to the xmb the wave will freeze and the user won’t be able to select any options from this screen.

Please let me know if you have any questions,

    PSN ID = Potocus

  • sony, i love it all. really, and i thank you very much. keep up the great work.

gamesblow i agree with all your ideas but have a few i’d like to see

    1. psn intergration to psp/psp’s xmb

    2. PS store accessible directly thru psp/psp’s xmb

    3. the in-game xmb expanded to allow use during everything such as: ps1, ps2, dvd, and bd movies

    4. cross game invites to invite others playing other games to your session

    5. in-game communications improved to not only work the same way as the 3rd request on my list (though a disable option during movies), but also voice messaging for a quick recorded message in addition as an improvement to just a typed message which can be somewhat time consuming

these are only minor improvements and i’m confident they will come with time. as others, i’m really looking forward to home, life with playstation, and the psp feature blu-ray to go. i can’t wait sony, thanks
