Firmware v2.40 status
+ Posted by Patrick Seybold // Director, Corporate Communications & Social Media
As has been reported on many gaming blogs and websites, we have temporarily taken Firmware v2.40 offline. We’ve received a limited number of calls from consumers experiencing an issue with installing the system software update on their PS3. While our consumer services department has seen a low volume of calls on this topic, we are committed to providing the PS3 community with XMB access features delivered in the v2.40 update. We are working diligently to isolate the problem for those few consumers and to identify a solution before we put the firmware back up.
We’ll provide further information as necessary here on the Blog.

ART-IS-WAR | July 6th, 2008 at 12:16 pm
u can choose to share all media thats in ur network,eye dont know the computer u have but on my new hp eye made me network settings private with file sharing enabled and then put all my files in my media holder u just have to figure it out,eye mean go through ur network settings and find out if file sharing is enabled first
1956
ART-IS-WAR | July 6th, 2008 at 12:17 pm
then if it is select to share with all incoming devices or just the ps3
1957
gjmunday | July 6th, 2008 at 12:19 pm
best way is to stream as then file doesnt need to be on the ps3, just the computer, tversity converts on the fly and sits nicely in the backgound of your pc. Your ps3 will then play any video format.

ART-IS-WAR | July 6th, 2008 at 12:19 pm
then search media servers,,from there u should see everything if not goto ur media player and look at ur setting it should ask u if u want to share media
1959
gjmunday | July 6th, 2008 at 12:20 pm
No dont do it that way, much easier to download tversity, it converts on the fly to your ps3 so you can play any video format etc that is sat on your pc.

ART-IS-WAR | July 6th, 2008 at 12:21 pm

gjmunday | July 6th, 2008 at 12:24 pm
but the media sharing in vista/xp wont let the ps3 play those unsupported files. E.g not all divx’s hardly any xvids, and no mkv’s etc, but streaming via tversity, the ps3 can play anything.

ART-IS-WAR | July 6th, 2008 at 12:25 pm

1970
gjmunday | July 6th, 2008 at 12:28 pm
yea, just saying with me doing it thru media player, the ps3 wouldnt play 90% of my divx files, and kept copying them to my ps3 when it played them, i dont want this. So i use tversity, it just streams everything i need from my pc without copying anything to my ps3 :).

locate file sharing
1976
GanjaQueen | July 6th, 2008 at 12:31 pm
@1937,
I did sync through my wireless network connection (got my PS3 on the wireless setup) through my router.
All you have to do make sure everything is all on the same wireless network (computer or what have you), then go to your PS3–under any category really (Photos, Music, Video, etc) that has ‘Search for Media Servers’–and it should detect it.
Since my wireless is always on, on my laptop, everytime I power on my PS3 it automatically picks it up (as long as you have you PC or Mac, that is).

AGH. Why people feel the need to constantly make excuses for sony is mind boggling. No one is questioning how “hard” anyones job is or how “hard” anyone works. The problem here is accountability. To put something out there, have it screw peoples systems up and then give no word as to what is going on…holiday weekend or not…is just wrong. Sitting at a computer punching keyboards isn’t my idea of “hard work”. I’m sure the people that do it enjoy it or they would find another job. Yes, people make mistakes, developers are “human” that’s not the point here. You can’t give me a good enough excuse for not addressing this situation. Now to really stir things up…not too long ago I had an xbox 360 and i remember xbox live crashed for a weekend at christmas time. Nobody could play cod4 and people were freakin out. Now don’t get me wrong I have my own issues with Microsoft but they not only continually updated the situation, they worked around the clock DURING CHRISTMAS and got things under control. How is this any different and why shouldn’t sony be expected to make the same sacrifices to remedy a situation they created in the first place? Where’s the accountability?

1987
GanjaQueen | July 6th, 2008 at 12:39 pm
@1964,
Like Art, mentioned you gotta make sure that everything is turned–not just power or anything, but turned on in the sense of sharing stuff over you network connection.
Your media files settings have to be open to being shared over your network (not you whole block, LOL, just for like say people in your household).

ART-IS-WAR | July 6th, 2008 at 12:40 pm
u MIGHT have to make ur network private instead of public

gjmunday | July 6th, 2008 at 12:43 pm
if u use tversity your dont have to disable your firewall it will automatically make a exception in the firewall, also the ps3 will automatically see it when u turn on the ps3.
Its easy to install and fairly easy to configure to, just really need to add your folders that you want to share into it. It will also let you play videos files and if it finds the subtitle file in the dir, you can turn subtitles on :).

1 - Go to Control Panel > Windows Firewall > Exceptions
- click ADD PROGRAM
- click BROWSE
- browse to C:\Program Files\TVersity\ and select MEDIAPLAYER.EXE
2 - In TVersity, go to the setup tab, and put the IP of your computer into the IP Address area.
Restart sharing in TVersity.
eye had tverity but deleted it it works for some eye just didnt like it as well.

@1974,
Ah, yeah that might be what it is. B/c in Vista I got it set to ‘public’ w/ everything, except printer sharing and public folder sharing, on.

gjmunday | July 6th, 2008 at 12:54 pm

GanjaQueen | July 6th, 2008 at 12:54 pm
@1979,
Oh well, see, I’m glad you mentioned that b/c if that’s what it does to movies then that would defeat the purpose of me using.

@Shogun34
I would love to dance around this idea of ‘public accountability’ and how ‘Sony needs to own up to this or that’ but I can’t, my legs are not strong enough to stand on them when it comes to that kind of thing. You see this as a point of personal accountability, which is understandable, but also extremely short-sighted. I can stand up as a consumer and come to the public aid of a company that doesn’t pay me anything (well, they sent me a shirt…) but frankly, asking for a face to put the blame on, puts you in the very awkward position of the straw man argument. You want a single face or person to put all of your angst upon, as if doing so will enlighten them and change the way things are done. This is just simply untrue, and you will never be granted such a wish.
Furthermore, this situation is stickly, but it is one that must be handled with humility. Sony will apologize when they put the FW back up, and everyone will get their empty trophy shelves (Mine has SSHD, that’s about it for a while folks…) and then peace will hopefully return to the valley. My point here is that you need to please take a well-earned deep breath and just relax, I’m 100% positive you will see 2.4 put back up this upcoming week, and you will get your hands on it then. So until then, go eat a sub? Talk to your friends about how pissed you are? Go somewhere and enjoy yourself? I hear they still play movies at the multiplex, go see what’s up down there for a while.

Just and FYI for everyone: I went to a Sam’s Club today for the first time in ages, and I was shocked to see that their games are cheaper than everywhere else. They have games like Army of Two, R6V2, NBA08, and MGS4 for $5-$10 cheaper than everywhere else I’ve seen them, ranging from $49.99 to $54.99. These same games are still fetching $60 brand new at places like Gamestop, Best Buy, etc..
Granted, the downside of this is that a Club Membership costs like $40 a year, but if you buy a lot of new games, this may be a very cheap alternative. Also, if you know anyone that has a Sam’s Card, you can use theirs to purchase the games, so long as they’re with you.
Of course, the other downside to this (and the reason I won’t do it) is that you have to give your money to blood sucking company like Wal-Mart, but for gamers on a budget, you should go and check it out.
Just thought I’d throw that out there!
