Firmware v2.40 status

Posted by Patrick Seybold // Director, Corporate Communications & Social Media

As has been reported on many gaming blogs and websites, we have temporarily taken Firmware v2.40 offline. We’ve received a limited number of calls from consumers experiencing an issue with installing the system software update on their PS3. While our consumer services department has seen a low volume of calls on this topic, we are committed to providing the PS3 community with XMB access features delivered in the v2.40 update. We are working diligently to isolate the problem for those few consumers and to identify a solution before we put the firmware back up.

We’ll provide further information as necessary here on the Blog.

@2183 Thats a interesting suggestion. First original one I’ve heard in a while :D

Damb, 2.4 has sucked the fun out of these holidays, the update worked fine at first, then it wouldn’t start up as usual, just a blank main page as #2170. Nothing I seem to do changes it. Have sent message to Sony, but no reply. Wicked. Thanks Sony. Where’s that hammer!!!

FIX IN 2.40

- PS2 game freeze at [game]boot
- Bluetooth headset output crash
- Game crash when turning off bluetooth headset while in-game
- move battery indicator left or down

SONY DO THIS:

- make “Shutdown” a button IN the menu rather than the subdirectory OF a menu (if you get what I mean :S)
- change SHIFT+BACKSPACE shortcut to CTRL+DEL or something
- hide/toggle clock to prevent burn-in
- add video playlists
- XMB during BD playback (this is for versatility, messaging and movies simultaneously is useful, I do it for AVIs and I wanna do it for BD disks as well)
- In-Game XMB for PS2/PS1 titles
- system sounds volume control
- volume control overlay for games (much like the one accessible during video playback), or a simple volume control menu located within the black/white “Hold PS Button” menu.
- access message list via button under gamercard
- a method for disabling in-game XMB (people prefer the B/W “hold PS Button” menu for it’s simple interface and quickness to load)

MY WISH LIST FOR XMAS:

- hard disk/usb/media card defragger
- integrate custom avatars/or update the existing presets
- PS2 game backward compatibility across all PS3 variants
- implement six-axis movement sensor controls to manipulate the visual player like you can do with the right control stick while playing music

Okay guys, here is my verdict on the 2.40 update, regardless of the fault with the firmware.

1. Why is there only 1 game that currently supports Trophies? I think that it is ridiculous that the Trophy System has been released with only ONE game currently supporting the feature. It’s like releasing a new console with only one game available from launch!

2. Why make an in-game XMB? Think about it guys, when you’re playing a game and you want to send a message to your friend, you press the PS button, then wait for the XMB to load, then navigate to your friends list and wait for that to load. You then have to go to your message box, then received box, than read it. The whole XMB in a game doesn’t appeal to me; it’s not quick, easy and fast. However the Xbox 360 has the Blade System for the dashboard, right? But when you go to play a game on the 360 and you want to send a message, you press the Xbox Guide button, and a nice, fast, clean, sharp menu comes out from the side of your screen, no need to load anything. On the Guide Menu, everything is close together and easy-to-use. So Sony, why not make an easy, clean, nice menu like this?

3. Why doesn’t the music player play in any of my games? Why give the developer the choice to implement the music player into their games?

4. Why make the whole 2.40 update so hard? I’m a programmer and I know that implememnting the whole XMB in a game would be extremely difficult and would be plagued with bugs, like the “Bricking” effect. Like I said in reason 2, just make a small, nice menu that pops out from the side of the screen? With a team of programmers, something like that would take about 2 weeks at the maximum, and it would be far better than a WHOLE in-game XMB!

5. When I receive a message I want to be alerted, just a little tone to let me know I have received a message, and when i go to read it, if the notification is still on the screen, I want to be able to press the PS button and it would take me straight to the message.

6. Where is in-game voice chat??? If Sony is going to implement this feature into a future firmware update, please allow for more than 2 people in one chat session, and DON’T F**K IT UP!!!

7. Make Trophies mandatory. Sony, please pressure developers to make Trophies for their already released games, and make the Trophy system a must-have requirement for future games.

9. DON’T F**K HOME UP! HOME COULD WIN THE COSOLE WAR FOR SONY!!!

If all of these things are released, the PlayStation 3 will be the best console on the market, and will surpass the Xbox 360.
PlayStation Network will also conquer Xbox LIVE with Home, group in-game voice chat, and the superior Trophy System.

Any queries please e-mail me: craighynd12@btinternet.com

gjmunday  |  July 7th, 2008 at 3:35 am

well as ive said before, ive had weird stuttering in games, constant psn disconnects and my bluetooth headset doesnt work anymore, neither does my internet browser, but get whats been happening today, turn my ps3 on, controllers dont work, cant be controller as i have 3, none register with the ps3. Reset the ps3, works again. But if i turn the ps3 off and back on, they dont work, only started happening today. think the firmware is bugged in the bluetooth stack maybe????? 2.40 is now getting very annoying for me :(

2207

gjmunday  |  July 7th, 2008 at 3:42 am

@2172. formatting the hard disk DOES NOT fix all the 2.4 problems, maybe the bricking one yes, the weird lags, disconnects, controllers not working, internet browser not working etc that people are experiencing cannot be fixed by formatting hdd, as I upgraded my hdd so i thought i know, ill format my old one put it in, see what happens, still same problems. Just weird how today im getting this weird controller problem on all 3 of my controllers

2208

craigyhaitch_94  |  July 7th, 2008 at 3:42 am

Yeah, Sony really needs to sit down, and assess the whole situation. Firstly, they need to fix all the bugs like the ones that gjmunday has had. Secondly, they HAVE to apply all the things I have said (post 2188) for the PS3 to become successful and defeat the Xbox 360 and Xbox LIVE.

2209

wcmarchese  |  July 7th, 2008 at 4:03 am

Ok, this is what should be done. Some sort of go-back firmware for the ones who are having these troubles. Then let Sony take their time with the complete 2.4 update. Who knows, there might be added content–and by that time OTHER games will work with the trophies and music. Just a thought.

2210

ghamdikh1  |  July 7th, 2008 at 4:11 am

good news:CVG have reported firmware 2.41 should be out by Wednesday.

2211

wcmarchese  |  July 7th, 2008 at 4:24 am

@ 2193

Hey, where did you hear the good news? And did they say anything about 2.41 having added features?

2212

Frescomannen  |  July 7th, 2008 at 4:36 am

@ 2194
I think he’s reffering to:
http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=192333

Keep in mind though - as the article states - nothing is yet official.

2213

Frescomannen  |  July 7th, 2008 at 4:39 am

@ 2194
I think he’s reffering to an article over at computers and videogames (I tried to link to it, but I guess that’s not an option here).

Do a google search. In the right collum there will be header reading “Sony still quiet about 2.40″ (or something). When I clicked on that I could find a new header on the right side reading “PS3 Firmware 2.41 out ‘midweek’ says Sony”. The article clearly states that this isn’t official though.

2214

Frescomannen  |  July 7th, 2008 at 4:40 am

Let’s see if this is possible:

The huge in-game XMB PS3 update that was pulled from PSN last week following technical issues will be re-released for download by Wednesday, CVG has been told.

Advertisement:
According to customer support, firmware version 2.41, which should be clear of all errors, will out “midweek”, although Sony is yet to make an official announcement to confirm that.

In case you missed it, Sony last week was forced to pull the hotly anticipated update after widespread reports of it breaking PS3 consoles.

The firmware is available to download from various website on the internet, but to be on the safe side you’d be best to wait for the update from Sony.

2215

wcmarchese  |  July 7th, 2008 at 4:52 am

Hey, I still have to admit–even though I want to get my hands on this, i’m still geeking out. I saw someone showing this on youtube and they had a spot open where home is going to be. This is like a teaser, and if this whole mess-up didn’t happen, this would have been some very awesome stuff. Not that it isn’t now.

2216

Xulap  |  July 7th, 2008 at 4:58 am

Here’s an article for you guys:

So it was told already… lol. Oh well… :P

2218

gjmunday  |  July 7th, 2008 at 5:05 am

hopefully it will be, took my ps3 and controllers round my next door neighbours, my controllers work fine on his ps3 and his controllers dont work on mine when it has this problem, also tried burnout and gta4, he has 2.36 firmware i have 2.40, Mine was dropping connection to psn and his wasnt, mine was laggy and stuttering thru burnout and gta and his wasnt..

2219

wcmarchese  |  July 7th, 2008 at 5:11 am

One thing i’m noticing is the dropping and the slowdown when the XMB comes up. I didn’t get to download this, but from what i’ve been hearing, it sounds like it’s taxing the RAM, or something, and it’s causing everything to slow–sometimes kicking you out of things that need more memory? I could be wrong.

effeff  |  July 7th, 2008 at 5:50 am

Midweek?

This midweek?
really this midweek ??

I dont get it ^^

GGCAN  |  July 7th, 2008 at 5:53 am

@2188….asked why only one game had trophies…it’s up to the developers.

But….I saw news that Pain is getting them very soon.

I’m back at work this week, so won’t be able to answer a lot of these questions (work does pay the bills).

Check out the Pain trophies article at PS3fanboy.com:

“With regards to trophies, this will be included in the expansion pack and won’t end there. Travis says that “new trophies for PAIN will come out as long as we continue to add content.” Hopefully this is a common occurrence, with future game expansions for existing titles bringing more trophies. Could this mean more Super Stardust HD trophies are coming at some point in the future? Considering there’s no Platinum trophy, we’re guessing so. “

2222

GGCAN  |  July 7th, 2008 at 5:56 am

By the way…I’ve had 2.40 since July 2 just past midnight, got the SSHD 4.00 patch and there’s nothing wrong with the way my PS3 is acting or the controllers.

Also, I have no lag that I can see.

I think as Sony has stated, it’s affecting some PS3 owners only…many are very happy.

It may be due to the servers getting hit a bit more often now than previously, but that’s only a guess.

2223

craigyhaitch_94  |  July 7th, 2008 at 6:02 am

@2203. Why give the developers the choice though? Sony should be pressurizing developers to make Trophy patches for their games, otherwise the Trophy System won’t work properly. Microsoft however makes Achievements A MUST HAVE REQUIREMENT for the game to be released on the Xbox 360. Why can’t Sony do that for Trophies? Are future games guaranteed to have Trophies?

2224

GGCAN  |  July 7th, 2008 at 6:06 am

mattfmac510…from page 44….SSHD you can play your own HDD music…but that one you have to go to Option…Audio select Custom and then pick your custom music…Pain and High Vel Bowling, you just click the Select button on the controller to do this…2 different ways.

@2205…..the devs. design the programs…and another article I saw if you look through this post way back states now that this option is available, most developers are willing to use it and enhance games…some aren’t but many are.

Wait a bit and see…people complain a lot before we even give these guys a bit of time.

2225

effeff  |  July 7th, 2008 at 6:08 am

Sony would control the games if they have this requierements. The devs have to choose by themselve if they use this function. I dont wanna be this programmer who code this stuff.

2226

GGCAN  |  July 7th, 2008 at 6:10 am

effeff…EXACTLY !

Most of these people complaining here, don’t realize the amount of time these programmers take to set up these games…it’s not always that easy to develop some stuff and then you gotta test it to make sure it works.

This patch was just put out and we need to give everyone a chance to get ‘on board’ to the new version.

I like what I’ve seen so far and expect much more to come.

2227

SuperFist  |  July 7th, 2008 at 6:58 am

@2205

You do understand that the Xbox 360 had everything in their Software Development Kits from the very beginning, right? Which means that the very code to allow for in-game XMB, music, voice chat and messaging was their at the inception of every 360 game (Note: it’s not compatible with older Xbox games because it wasn’t designed with this SDK).

So, with that in mind, with all of this in place even before the Xbox 360 was designed, doesn’t it stand to reason that their dashboard interface is more intuitive? Of course it is and will be far superior to a function that is added later on down the line with not that much time to plan for. Sony would have to redesign their entire SDK code to allow for all other “future games” to implement it. They can, in no way, FORCE any game developer who has a previous game on the market to update their game with a patch to allow this functionality.

I will bet that MOST DEVELOPERS will NOT be issuing patches for their games because it is counter-profit. They already put the man-hours into producing the game and they are finished and on to bigger projects that will net them revenue. It makes complete business sense. Why put many man-hours into something for the use of those who’ve already purchased their game, at no charge, at no ultimate gain or profit to them? It doesn’t make sense… to Infinity Ward’s Call of Duty 4 or to many other companies. IW will not even release a patch for rumble support; so much for in-game music or trophies!

2228

GGCAN  |  July 7th, 2008 at 7:01 am

Here’s a recent article from PSXExtreme.com:

“PS3 Software Trophy Support List

We gave you the story of the classic PS3 trio of software that won’t be getting Trophy support, but we still don’t have the official, definitive word on which games will, and which games won’t. We have heard from several sources that about 70% of PS3 titles will support Trophies, but again, we don’t have a specific set of lists.

Well, it’d be difficult to compile, but if you want to check an ongoing updated list, head on over to TheSixthAxis, where they’re currently setting up a “yes, no, and maybe” list for the trophy support subject. As you can see, that trio of Ratchet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare and Resistance: Fall of Man is under the “Will Not Support Trophies” category, as we reported earlier. But it’s the other lists that should interest you, and that includes the “Expected To Support Trophies;” it only includes one game right now: Bioshock. We imagine this is true, because we’ve heard plenty of evidence that this PS3 remake will most certainly boast Trophies. Chances are, 2K was well aware of them when they started on the project.

Anyway, keep checking back as they update it, and we’ll be sure to keep you apprised of any major, big-name titles that will or will not support Trophies. Well, at least for now; eventually, most all games will, so it won’t be much of an issue.”

Customer service! Sony should look it up

2231

GGCAN  |  July 7th, 2008 at 7:47 am

Let’s let Sony fix that update problem.

They’ve told us we can check other Blogs for info. and that’s what I’m doing…may be rumours but you know, it’s not been a week yet since they put out the patch.

So thing will happen, give it time.

We can’t have everything we want yesterday.

Thank you 2213/GGCAN

Finally some patience and reason on this blog.

xeneize368  |  July 7th, 2008 at 8:15 am

for those that now have a bricked ps3, what are we supposed to do to fix it, and by that i mean, was is sony gonna do to fix all the ps3 that got bricked? did i mention it better be free of charge?

2235

GGCAN  |  July 7th, 2008 at 8:24 am

@2216…take a look back in this blog…another poster (Echo307) describes what you can do to fix that problem.

As well, there apparently weren’t that many machines that received that problem and due to that problem is the reason Sony did pull the update….so anyone else won’t be affected.

Many people did get the update and all is fine.

2236

xeneize368  |  July 7th, 2008 at 8:31 am

@2217 what comment number was echo307’s post

2237

GGCAN  |  July 7th, 2008 at 8:35 am

He’s at 2054, page 42.

If you’re not comfortable with that…Sony has said that anyone affected should call them and they will assist you.

2238

Soultaker-9999-  |  July 7th, 2008 at 9:29 am

Sony should at least make the profile card and trophies fully viewable offline also offline ps3 owners should still be able to earn trophies and build a profile in the same way the xbox360 allows offline ps3 owners are being left out once again it seems!

2239

vanace  |  July 7th, 2008 at 9:36 am

firm works well for me but ONLY FOUND PROBLEMS WITH CONTROLLERS that does not work fine in some games as cod4. AND PS2 CONTROLLERS WITH OFICIAL adapters FOR PS3 WORKS REALLY BAD. before the update they worked fine.

thank you and regards

vanace

2240

GGCAN  |  July 7th, 2008 at 9:42 am

@2220….yep would be nice and maybe we’ll be seeing that in future updates, who knows what comes next.

2241

Cordy  |  July 7th, 2008 at 9:46 am

@2205 Actually if you read the press release for Capcom about Trophy Support in DMC4 it states in accordance with what Sony has already stated, they are not requiring games that have already shipped or about to ship to have Trophy Support however it will be for futre titles. They even changed part of their contract with the developers making it mandatory for them to include them in future titles. The only thing that remains optional is patching older titles.

2242

Soultaker-9999-  |  July 7th, 2008 at 9:51 am

It sure would be sweet im offline quite a bit but want the whole profile card trophies thing etc, if it isnt done they are alienating every single person who paid for a ps3 but doesnt have the net all the time or not at all, xbox does so sort it not Sony

@2228 The blog above last couple sentences:

“We are working diligently to isolate the problem for those few consumers and to identify a solution before we put the firmware back up.”

And I’ve read other posters here have seen that an update is coming around Wed of this week…not sure how true that is, but it’s Monday and we’ll most likely have news soon.

2249

GGCAN  |  July 7th, 2008 at 10:38 am

Yes and those five days have been over a holiday weekend in the US don’t forget, many of them probably haven’t worked on it a lot since they more than likely had Friday, Saturday, and Sunday off. So this is only their 3rd day working on it. They’ll have it out before long, hopefully with a 2.41 patch for those of us who already have it.
