PS3 System Software Update (v2.41)

1,366 0

Hi, everyone. As many of you know, we released PS3 firmware update v2.40 last week, but had to take it offline temporarily because, for a limited number of users, the XMB wouldn’t display after the update was installed. We’ve been able to fix the problem, and I’m happy to report that firmware update v2.41 will be released shortly.

We want to extend our apologies to the PlayStation community for any inconvenience. Now we’ll be looking forward to seeing everyone online and racking up those trophies!

  • @1149 and 1150

I’ll try that 1149 thank you

1150, I know that. My problem is that when I start my PS3 nothing comes up.

  • Sorry that last one was for needitfast.

The feature is there and some devs have said that they’ll use it now, but it costs extra money to code this stuff as well.

So we have what’s needed, but the devs have to make sure to use it….

  • I would like the ability to turn off my controller to be put back in. I used to start folding@home and then hit the PS button and turn off the controller. That option is now replaced by the XMB which I thought in turn should let me turn off the controller but I don’t see that option. So now I have to get up hook my controller in and go about my business and when I want to play I have to get up again and get the controller. I know its not much to complain about but you gave me the option before. My number 1 pet peeve is when I have features taken away from me and no I don’t need the exercise :)
Also I agree having the battery status block the clock is silly. You knew where it was going to be displayed did no one say “you know that doesn’t look right” When testing things?
Can you also let us change the font color on the XMB? My background picture has a lot of white and makes overlayed text almost unreadable.

  • needitfast…I just watched that video again, just in case I missed something.

From this viewing, yes he does mention changing sound settings and a few other music settings, but that was stated right after he said, ‘please remember this is only a concept for now’.

So most likely that is coming in the near future.

You’re right…it’ll currently stop whatever you’re doing if you try it now.

  • mooch001….if you hold the PS button down a long time…that feature still does come up.

If it’s a short period…it takes you to the other option.

The old feature is still there.

  • I also watched it again – you’re right he said it is just a concept – but i thought he meant that just how it looks like finally – not that it is mostly not possible.

what i can see by pixel-junk monsters or however this game is called, there is no real ingame thing to access the music – he pops up the XMB and do it – and that is, what i’ve expected

And i also quote the FAQ of this blog, regarding the sound settings:

“Will it be possible to change in-game the sound output?

Yes, sound output changes are supported.

    IT IS NOT!

  • additional:

he says that he turned off the gamesound for demonstrating – another hint that the game itself has nothing to do with the playback via XMB

  • I’m pretty sure we’re going to see it in the near future.

I’m willing to give it a bit more time.

I use the texting to friends a lot when I’m playing a game, folding@home or listening to music on the media centers….I like the trophies as well and the 3 games that do currently support in game music.

I guess they can’t please everyone, but I’m happy with what I’ve seen so far.

  • needitfast…..I’ve tried SSHD and HVB which both have in game music currently.

You turn off the original soundtrack to replace it with you HDD music….it works on the 3 games Super Stardust, High vel bowling and Pain….however, each one is a bit different.

If you don’t like any of those games, guess you’ll have to wait for other devs to program the feature in.

  • Yeah Eric really did mis-lead alot of people with the in-game music feature in 2.40 in the video. Then in the FAQ it went downhill for me when he noted that he wrote the developer must include it on the game. But hey what can you do, M$ has that feature secured on their console.

  • Kyen777 exactly !

And even though we may not all like the way it’s going to work, it’s a work around so all is absolutely legal.

I really don’t mind the way they’ve done it actually.

  • i see your point if you have those mysterious three games – but i haven’t – and for my use of the ps3 i just got a new clock – pretty disappointing when you first read much about those new great features…

  • Yes I only have one compliant other than the not enough trophy support. But as someone who doesn’t have highspeed I would like to view my profile a.k.a “gamer card” offline as well. Just a little thing but would make me feel not so out of touch.

  • Are supported doesn’t always mean have been implemented yet….

It’s there for use as long as it’s implemented properly.

  • Well, the 2.41 Update has completely messed up the video output of my PS3, so no the HD resolutions (720 and 1080i) are stretched beyond the edges of my plasma TV. Is anyone else have similar problems with their PS3 after going from 2.40 to 2.41?

Before the update, my screen displayed correctly at 1080i and 720p. Now the edges of the PS3 display are so far past the edges of the TV that I cannot play anything or barely use anything. Text near the screen edges is all cut off on all 4 sides. I hope Sony catches wind of this soon for another fix.

  • thor17usa…haven’t seen that one yet, but if I was you, I’d go check those settings again on the PS3 and make sure they weren’t modified.

If they still have the same resolution as before, you may have a problem….but I’m wondering if they weren’t changed somehow ?

  • I don’t really mind it either GGCAN. Its not like they didn’t have restrictions and still left it up to the developers then I’d question how smart they really are in this business. But unfortunately since they do have these restrictions, I do respect them for at least trying. In-game voice would have been nice but in-game messaging is better than no in-game communication. My guess is that everybody wants all the xbox features and more all at once.

  • Yep and one BIG difference…we don’t pay for online like XBOX does….that was a huge factor in my purchase of my PS3.

  • Firmware updates can reset the PS3 settings thats prob what happened. Sound output change works for me you have to goto where you setup your mic they didn’t mean you could goto the sound options just the accessory settings.

  • Yeah free online and mgs4 got me. Dont get me wrong though, i do like xbox but id rather have mgs4 over GoW. Gow is a very nice game but id go after the story of my favorite game. PSN would be better if i got some more online games with it other than MGO.

  • Ahh Sony… All of these mistakes cost ya dearly in business?
I hope you guys do something about this. And quick

  • “sound output change” is from my point of view, to change it e.g. from HMDI to optical – and that’s not working.

Ingame music is not possible for GT5, Burnout, GTAIV, Motorstorm, FIFA and i suppose it won’t ever be patched into by the devs

  • I think we’re going to see a lot more upcoming games supporting trophies and in game music.

    You know why ?

People with a PS3 now know about these and are demanding them; don’t build it into your game and risk people not buying your game, even if it’s a fantastic game.

It’s not Sony now, it’s the devs and, actually us the consumer/customer people.

So let’s let them know what we think.

I’m off now (some are probably saying…thk god..this guy can’t shut up…hey, I’m a gemini…I know you don’t want to hear my history needitnow haha).

    Take care people…good night.

  • More online games? Warhawk, Tony Hawk, Skate, Ultimate Alliance, Call of Duty 4, Team Fortress 2, Eye of Judgement, High Stakes Poker, Unreal Tournament 3, Grand Theft Auto 4, Army of Two, and a bunch more. GOW had a horrible story so much so they got a professional writer for the next one.

  • yeah you’re right – for upcoming games – but i want to play the games i already bought with ingame music – but it seems i have to live without – i give it up.

ggcan don’t get me wrong, it is probably interesting when you talk about your life, but i don’t think that this is the right place ;)

  • This is funny… in game XMB is not working when Im playing COD3!? The others game is alright…

  • XMB doesn’t work when I am playing ANY online game. When I am NOT playing online, I can use the XMB without a problem.

  • Ha ha…ok…after all this support for Sony…guess what ?

    (I still support them).

I went to text someome just before going to bed…my PS3 froze (I was also in Folding@Home at this same time as texting)…

Well the controllers would NOT do a thing…at first they kind of stalled, but then nothing.

I tried 3 different controllers, nothing.

I tried to power off from the front, nothing.

I tried many times the above, nothing.

I finally shut the power button down at the back as a last resort.

It took a bit, but all powered up….so I don’t know, but there does appear to still be some problems, as this has never happened before.

I’m ok with it, just reporting this incident.

  • Hey Sony Folks!

2.40 and 2.41 went without a hitch for the most part. MGS4 crashed once after 2.40, and updating my trophies hung the PS3 once after 2.41. Those are the only incidents I have though.

I have a question about the video playback features in the new firmware…particularly in relation to the changelog that was posted:

    http://play-beyond.net/2008/07/02/firmware-update-240-changelog/

Upscaling of Blu-Ray Disc video content is said to be supported now. However, when I popped in Disc 2 of Pirates of the Caribbean, the SD special features were not being upscaled, and I could find no related setting to tweak to make it happen. Does the PS3 now upscale SD content on Blu-Ray Discs? If so, is there a setting that we need to adjust?

If not, such upscaling would be a great feature to add in the future. As of now, SD content on Blu-Ray looks worse than DVD content due to the lack of upscaling with the former.

    Thanks. PlayStation rocks!

  • I’m not sure where else to post this, so if someone has a better place, let me know. 2.41 is giving me the kinds of problems that 2.40 was giving other people. for example, whenever I play games online, they’re laggy now and they weren’t before 2.40 or after 2.40, but its laggy now after 2.41. I play mostly Battlefield:Bad Company and Call of Duty 4 online and they’re both laggy now after 2.41 to the point where they’re pretty much unplayable. Please fix this or tell me how I might fix it.

  • I don’t know GoW story anyways, the gameplay looks good though.

  • Also reading these posts… it seems that even releasing 2.40 was a pretty bad idea. Alot of people are reporting constant freezes, Mic problems, and games lag bad now. Hopefully they’ll come with a fw 2.42 because now this update didn’t improve much but fix the bug that brick peoples ps3’s is what it seems. Hopefully this gets resolved. I haven’t had any problems yet.

  • whats the point in folding@home really? what benefits do u get from it? i dont get y ppl wud waste their time and electricity to keep it on….??

  • YO 2.41 AND 2.4 REWENED MY [DELETED] MIC LAGGIN UP MY GAMES…..HELLLPPP!!!!!!!!

  • Until you or someone in your friend/family list gets hit by one of the diseases that they’re trying to find a cure for.

    That’s why I’m doing it.

  • HOORAY
i have never been happier to not have broadband
if i did have broadband, i wouldve downloaded 2.40 or 2.41 and possibly stuffed up my system, like many people have been reporting on this blog

  • I entered here because I wanted to say AWESOME…

But now I want to say..

    Should I wait until 2.42?

Eric, would you be kind enough to say if the problems that many people are having with 2.41 is a regression from 2.40?

    Thanks!

  • Also…I miss the days when there were fewer comments.

Of course, it’s best for the blog, but now I can’t just read 1200+ comments so I’m just stuck with the first 50 comments or so.

    Damn.

  • Forget 2.41 and trophies.

For god sake will someone do something about the size of the bloated updates!?

As a user of metered internet, the regular and massive 120+MB updates are cringe worthy.

To make things worse, you cannot even use PSN services like the Playstation store without the update.
It blocks you out until you download it.

I’ve gotten to the point where I am furious about this.
If it keeps up I’ll simply have to use the PS3 as a strictly offline machine.

  • FIX VOICE CHATE OR GO BACK TO 2.36 NEW FEATURES SUCKS IF THEY BREAK OLD ONES
AND WE DONT NEED THE WHOLE XMB IN GAME… ITS KINDA STUPID IF I CANT USE IT WHY LOAD IT?

P.S THE CLOCK SUCKS LET ME TURN IT OFF

  • Machine is still running strong, except for the one glich with the freezing yesterday.

I think it may have been due to the servers being extremely busy as the when I did try to text the other person…the texting all occurred, but then I tried to send and that’s when the lagging and then freezing occurred.

Possibly due to the high increase of people online, Sony just needs to monitor and we’ll have a more stable server environment in the future. It’s still early, so anything could happen.

Also noted that when I was in Folding@Home, usually the digits that track what you’re doing on Folding run by very fast; late last night when the freezing happened…..they were crawling….so I think the combination of these two things possibly caused the freeze.

  • The update will be 120MB each time they replace the whole firmware no just bits and pieces each time. Its like flashing your PC bios just the PS3 has a big bios.

  • Eric,

Thank you for keeping us up to date with the firmware changes. The PS3 keeps getting better and better and I’m sure the sky is the limit in terms of what it can really do.

I do have a minor gripe, though. I use the PS3 for movies as much as gaming, and I have been following the development of the PS3’s DTS decoder closely. A few 7.1 DTS-HD Blu-Ray titles downmixed from 7.1 to 5.1 because the way the channels were encoded on the disc were unrecognized by the PS3. This changed with 2.41 with the New Line titles with DTS-HD MA 7.1 as they now are output as 7.1. However, one title, “The Condemned” still is output as 5.1 unfortunately. Hopefully, this movie will be addressed in a further update. FYI, the codec is DTS-HD High Resolution, NOT Master Audio, which may be the issue.

    Thanks!
