PS3 System Software Update (v2.41)
+ Posted by Eric Lempel // Director, PlayStation Network Operations
Hi, everyone. As many of you know, we released PS3 firmware update v2.40 last week, but had to take it offline temporarily because, for a limited number of users, the XMB wouldn’t display after the update was installed. We’ve been able to fix the problem, and I’m happy to report that firmware update v2.41 will be released shortly.
We want to extend our apologies to the PlayStation community for any inconvenience. Now we’ll be looking forward to seeing everyone online and racking up those trophies!

Oh ,142…my ps3 does the same thing ( launch system ) anyway leave it plugged for a second it should register. Unforunately , everytime I turn my system off, I have to plug it back up to register the controller.

Thanks a bunch, Eric.
What I found weird is that it doesn’t have a changelog. Not even on the PS3 when you’re installing.
But still, thanks a lot. I owe you guys part of my life(boredom part).

oh hey BigOLBallz,…i just noticed ur comment…thnx!…
haha…it worked!….but that would suck if u have to connect it to the system just to register every time u turn it on…
haha…i hope that doesn’t happen to me…how would u fix that anyway?…call tech support or sum?…

This is beside the topic point, but I’d like to thank Sony for bringing out a wonderful social aspect via the PSN. Nintendo may be so social when it comes to bringing out all those casual family junk (they look like junk to me anyway), but when it comes to social contact online… they suck! I can know it because I “have” a WII. Been supporting you both all this time, but you’re IMO the best!
Formate your WII and farewell to your friend-code and friends and hello new code. Not to imagine if your WII might break, and you have like 80 friends in your friends-list, the horror, how are you suppose to contact them now?! Every single game with an online function you’ll need to add a stupid extra friend-code. You don’t see your friends online and sending messages is hell.
I already have a whole bunch of extra friends thanks to being around here for only a few days and several of them I really chat with. At times I’m more busy catching up with people around the PSN than playing games, but heck its fun
So, thanks Sony, you’re the best

Really? I would adivse you to push the reset button (small hole) on the back of your controllers. You should be fine after that.

Though I had no problems with the 2.40, I want to say thank you for the quick fix for those who were having problems themselves.

Subzero_11 | July 8th, 2008 at 2:59 am
Sony, If you don’t mind, in the next update could you possibly relocate the battery status icon of the controller to the left or bottom of the clock rather than right on it. Not a HUGE inconvenience, but still VERY annoying nonetheless. Other than that, 2.40/1 is perfect.
(other than no soundtracks, and limited trophies of course)

So when will I see one of my 24 PS3 games support trophies?
I hope that at least we will learn about that on E3 next week.

Thank you so much for releasing a fix guys. My friends were becoming restless. Now all we need is more games to support trophies & custom soundtracks then I can really rack up on my trophy collection :o)

@165
Why? Is it so problematic to go and install it yourself?
I can give a few reasons why it’s a bad idea
1. Time restraints I download them in the morning before work I don’t want to have to wait till they install before I can leave to turn it off and I don’t want it on all day. (Minority agreement probably)
2. I like the download in background feature and I don’t want that taken away. Installs can not be performed in the background and if it downloads the installs automatically we can’t have that feature anymore plus we could only be able to download one at a time because there would be conflicts. (Majority probably agree)
3. I don’t like bloated code which would just add needless lines of code which means more code more chance of bugs, which is never good even if you could toggle it off. Plus I don’t know how much space they have in flash but I don’t want that to take up room so they don’t have room for important usefull things.

Well as expected, no problems with 2.41 as I didn’t have with 2.40. So I see it simply, as a precaution

I’m going to have to 2nd this one.
Not a big deal but still it’s the wrong place to have the clock and/or the battery icon.

Concerning people who’re complaining about only Stardust supporting trophies “right now”. Maybe a wishful thinking, but how about Sony wanted to see first how the update would work, so the other patches could drop in as well on a later term when everything worked a-ok. You’ve seen it with 2.40 update, the update of SSHD has been removed as well, at least, from what I read around here. What if like 6 games supported trophies, then from all the 6 games their updates had to be removed as well, … I guess…

My final message wasn’t meant for Seraphim, but in general, sorry read your post “after” I posted my message
You’re absolutely right, like I’ve said, maybe its a sort of precaution to see how everything works, before everyone starts patching games and throwing in the trophies which people want so much.

Though I’ve had 2.40 since last week tuesday. I still would like to extend my thanks to the Firmware team for working so diligently on a patch to get this out ASAP.

Are you serious, what’s the difference between looking at the top right than the left / bottom of the clock?
Some people are just never satisfied with anything. To me that’s a wierd request considering it doesn’t stay up (3-4 seconds).

Why did it take almost a week for a two paragraph update?
182
Dexter48 | July 8th, 2008 at 4:13 am
Thanks Sony, even though I didn’t experience any problem with 2.4, I noticed tha (at last) the PS Storre was alot faster to load. I don’t know if it’s related to this update.
About what I’d like to see in the next firmware :
- Better DivX - Xvid Support
- x264 support
- MKV support
You guys did a great job so far, keep in up.

tuaamin13 | July 8th, 2008 at 4:19 am
@180
You obviously don’t do software.
1) You must identify the problem. Misidentifying the problem leaves open the chance of not fixing what you need to, or creating more bugs in the process. You must also find out if that’s the only problem, or if a combination of factors is contributing, then you have to fix all of them.
2) Fix it (this part doesn’t take too long in comparison)
3) Test it. Then you test it some more. Then you try to break it, and test it some more.
So it’s not that it’s 2 paragraphs, it’s just that the PR is 2 paragraphs..
It seems like they also did a bit of optimization too; IMO it loads the XMB faster now over 2.40.

at least it was quick to go from 2.4 to 2.4.1 (in-game xmb doesnt seem as choppy but other then that, all looks and feels the same.
191
epacs | July 8th, 2008 at 4:31 am
Well , 2.41 is kind of useless without a game to earn trophies on.. The SSHD patch isn’t back up yet.

ghamdikh1 | July 8th, 2008 at 4:37 am
@ALL
good news:
GamersReports writes : “Sony’s 2.41 Firmware is going to be available for download via the System Update on your Playstation 3 console.
Among the new ability of not bricking your console; the minor update adds a new 4th “tab” to show your last played game, time and date.
Also, the “Crown” Platinum trophy has been transformed into an actual trophy w/ a crystal globe inside.”

wcmarchese | July 8th, 2008 at 4:39 am
It’s funny. Last week everyone wanted to hang Sony. Now everyone is mewling like content little kittens. lol. It’s cool though, finally I get to download this. I’m at work–hope it isn’t taken down by the time I get home!!!
Just an idea. If we can’t have music intigrated, how about just having it played over a game. Like if you bring up the music player, the game audio turns off.
So basically, if the developer doesn’t intigrate it into the game–we have the option of just playing over the game: Sort of like how you can play the music while surfing the net.
Does this make sense?

Awesome stuff.
I had no problems with the 2.40 update but its good to know what actions you took to prevent the widespread problem with the 2.40 update.
Need multiple PSN ID logins for multiplayer games such as Warhawk!
