PAIN Amusement Park: First Trailer and Preview

227 11

These past seven months have really been busy for the PAIN team. In addition to releasing our updates we have been feverishly building the “better mousetrap.” The DOWNTOWN area in PAIN was a huge success for everyone involved! I remember some of my first interviews where I had to explain PAIN to people who haven’t played before. Let me tell you, that wasn’t even remotely easy. Seven months later let me try that again …

PAIN is a game that picks up where other games leave off. In every other game when you are smacked so hard you fall down the game dusts you off, and makes you try again. When you get smacked so hard you fall down it’s time to START playing PAIN! You’ve barely gotten warmed up!

Now you know how to OOCH. Your MONKEYS have been SPANKED. Your FUN WITH EXPLOSIVES skillz are legendary. And MIMES … they get weak in the knees when your PSN Name is whispered. You’re quite the master of disaster.

DOWNTOWN … has so been destroyed.

Now it’s time to hit The Amusement Park for some rest and relaxation right?

WRONG! This Park needs to know your name.

What’s this?

HOT n COLD teddy bears that do the robot? Bouncing CLOWNS that need tossing and smacking? How about a little SHOT CALLIN’ to prove your skillz are better than anyone else around. What kind of Amusement Park is this?

It’s the PAIN ABUSEMENT PARK. This time you can invite your friends to join you. We have online multiplayer capability so you can finally pit your skills against other people on the PLAYSTATION NETWORK. We also support the new PlayStation Trophies. This might be useful to see how awesome your competition is before you challenge them to a PAIN game. There’s a whole lot of content in this Park. For a first preview of the PAIN Amusement Park, head on over to GamesRadar.

I’m very proud of this add-on. A lot of these ideas came from us .. and quite a bit from YOU, our players. If you haven’t been heard, I suggest you get over to www.painps3.com and make your presence known … I already posted a brand new blog about how we came up with this add-on.

See you at the Fun Spot … and keep your “Pimp Hand” strong. You’ll need it.

ok are there leader boards for this game and if so how do i access them ok and another question what is going on with the pain website i usually go on it every hour and read the post and nobody is posting anymore it wont let us please tell me when u think it will be back up thanks

  • ok now what about the leader boards

  • The PAIN blog also has lost a few days of comments, I think they did a rollback of a previous backup. Shame tho, there were some good long comments in there.
But it’s still not quite back to normal yet, I got some weird errors last night too.

  • We are aware of that too. We are fixing that.

  • @ Travis’ reply to my request

I would like a new grandma! Maybe she can be a friend of the granny we hit in the Downtown area! LOL! And she wants payback! You guys can have her with her walker or maybe we can launch her while she’s sitting in a wheelchair? LOL!

And yes! A sumo would be great! Or maybe a fat Operah singing lady with horns on her head called Helga, LOL!

  • I have a feeling Travis is pretty busy fixing any problems right now to keep players happy.

  • the pain website is working again yay

  • Seems like it’s been forever since I noticed the billboard hinting at the Amusment Park. I never would have thought I’d still be playing Pain after all this time but it still remains fun. I look forward to more features and areas to destroy. Keep up the good work.

    @ sgoryl Go Sox!

  • Travis you really did you best to duck out on TristanMike’s comment. But failed. You ARE PR.

You can’t deny that for $12 all you’re delivering are two characters and one level. It gets real boring, REAL fast. The extra skins and sound effects should have been free, this new level should have been included or at least a free addon.

I’m sure I’m not alone when I say that I felt totally ripped off when I bought PAIN. Why even have a level select when there is only one level? It makes me think that there are other levels to unlock. Don’t be teases like that.

Pixeljunk Monsters has a ****ton more content compared to PAIN and infinitely more fun. I could buy almost two PS1 games from the store and get more for my money. Never before have I felt more nickel and dimed than when I seen the lack of content in PAIN.

Idolminds, you can try and claim that you have our best interests in mind, but the damage is done. You’ve alienated your customers and have proven that these extra skins and sounds are nothing more than you trying to reach deeper into our pockets. You’re response to Tristan’s comments only prove’s that point.

I’m not buying anymore “content” from your company ever again, you’re too greedy IMO.

  • Thanks Travis

  • Thanks Cant Wait Travis to get my Hands all over PAINage.. lots of Strong hands on my END of things :D

  • @ 159 – You don’t have to buy it. The rest of us will and will enjoy it too. They didn’t hold a gun to your head to buy the game. I’ve had it since it launched and I love it. Glad to see you came on here just to say you won’t buy the add-on. As you can see your comment won’t phase us PAIN fans or Travis one bit. Have a good one!

  • @ Travis

I always appreciate feedback from the people at this Blog and I hope that you don’t feel any malice in my words. I really have loved the Playstation brand and would help fight tooth and nail to see the brand succeed. I hope that, in essence, is what comes across when I make such long posts and not to have it come off as “ranting” (OK, sometimes :P) or “blabbering”.

I also have the utmost respect for you and your position. I know it’s not an easy one to be out there on the front lines and it can be easier to just not post at all and none of us would want that. The “PR talk” line meant to say that it sounded like something a PR person would say…not saying you are PR. As well, the developers. Like I said in my previous post, which may have not gotten my meaning across very well, I have huge respect for any developer. I’ve dabbled in it, and I just can’t get my head around it.

It’s just that these days I’ve been very frustrated in the way Sony has been handling things and their seemingly lack of uniformity across their system (and thus, games).

When Trophies come out to compete with Achievements, or to give the user something more than achievements, but then only 1 games supports them at launch, the majority of previous games (mostly 3rd party) won’t be supported, and we’re really unsure of the place Trophies will have in the future, it’s rather disheartening. I’m glad to see the guys over at PAIN step up, but honestly, I expect no less of internal development… and even then we’re not sure how many internal games will go back and patch for Trophies (flOw ?). You may think I’m wrong for expecting it, I don’t think I am. I think it’s a sad state when you buy a game and you’re not sure if it will have Trophies or not. If not all games support them, then the whole initiative seems pointless.

Also I’m curious about something you mentioned in regards to Trophey and Custom Soundtrack support. Are you suggesting that developers can charge us for these features if they want to ? Do you mean that SquareEnix can charge us for each trophey we unlock, or charge us for a patch to do Custom Soundtracks ? Or can just right out refuse to do either ?

Honestly, I just felt that when PAIN was first released, it was too sparse for the cost. I’ve gone back in, updated to the most recent version, and I do think that what’s included in the intial purchase is getting more reasonable for the intial cost. I still think that extra characters are a tad expensive (correction, apparently the cost dropped from 1.99 to 99 cents… I missed that price drop, much more reasonable) and I’ll reserve judgment for the levels.

I guess that I have expected that PSN games would be cheaper than Blu-Ray titles, even after getting a bunch of downloadable content… my fear is that by the time I’ve spent the equivilent to a Blu-Ray disc, I’ll actually have less content than if it had of shipped on a Blu-Ray (as one would have to admit, the bar is a little higher for disc based game content). At least with a Blu-Ray, I could ensure that in 25 years, I would still, most likely, be able to play the game, even if I had to buy a “used” console for nostalgia purposes.

I’ve tried to give PAIN the time, I really, really have, but I just don’t understand it. I’ve tried, honestly. Blood, sweat and tears I’ve tried. I don’t get the rules, I don’t get the combo’s, I’m lucky to get 1 million points… on a good day. I don’t know how to unlock pretty much anything. In other words, I really, really, really suck, really badly… and that also frustrates me :P

In closing, I’d like to extend my utmost appreciation for the time that you (and all the others) take to respond back to the community. There are only a handful of Blog writers that don’t and I’m disappointed in every last one of them. Travis, keep up the fantastic work, you really help set the bar, I wish that more people were as committed as you. I hope that you didn’t take my words in offence to you. I respect you very much.

    Sincerely,
    TristanMike

  • sounds like a lot of fun. But when you say that trophy support is coming out with the new map, do you mean that the trophies can only work on this map, and not downtown?

I am also wondering if the current medals I have will carry over to my trophies?

  • vitz3 – WOW, you sound like a 12 year old who can’t make something work, so you say it’s not your fault, it’s the games fault. This is a great game, it has plenty to do, and more is coming. Most of the comments you made are unfounded and flat out wrong. Everybody is entitled to an opinion, but your ranting just makes you sound like a whining little kid.

Try the game people! It’s fun and VERY challenging! Go to the game’s web site and pick up hints, and make a few friends to play when online comes.

  • @ xN1CK5T4x

Yes, Trophies will be available for Downtown as well.

  • @TristanMike – When online comes out, get in a game with someone and check out what they do, then you might “get it” a little better. It’s really a fun game and the more people playing the better! Check out the site and ask for help, people will give it to you. The community is always willing to help out!

  • Travis Williams

@Vitz: Few things… first and foremost I am a Sony Employee. I work WITH Idol Minds to make PAIN. I’ve been in software development since the very early 90s I am not Public Relations. Ask anyone in Sony PR. They have to restrain me all the time. Heh. Now that being said let me answer some of your assumptions not questions.

PAIN costs 9.99 in America and you get Jarvis (two alternate characters) and Ed and the downtown environment. I am not really sure what you are talking about when you say “skins” except if you are talking about Jarvis’ other personas (which also have different audio takes). We have a level select because it was always our intention to build more areas.

Pixel Junk Monsters is a phenomenal game. It also doesn’t have half the complexity of assets that we have for PAIN. So while there is a variety of content (levels) with Pixel the complexity of the content is not the same. You have finite resources when you build a product. I hope that makes sense. If it doesn’t I’m sorry.

We haven’t alienated customers Vitz. You’re sorta in the minority on this thread. I am answering your questions because I think if you understood how we build a game as complex as PAIN your opinions would be somewhat different. At the very least they would be more respectful.

..but then again I could be wrong.

  • Travis Williams

@Tristan: Well there was a little malice, but I don’t take it personally. I think I can tell you are passionate. Passion takes a lot of forms and I couldn’t do this stuff if I took all the things said to me to heart. It’s not healthy. But you make your points very clearly and I make it a point to answer well phrased questions (or criticisms) completely.

Anyone who knows me will tell you that I am one of the straight shooters. I WILL tell you how I feel. To the extent to which you get PR is that I am “nicer” when I explain things here on the blog. In person I am very EXTREMELY blunt. That doesn’t solve anything though and it only makes me feel better and it doesn’t leave the other person better off so I am trying to change that part of me.

I am going to explain something to you that you might not know. Sony Internal / First Party development is treated just like another company when it comes to things like new OS features and what not (In game XMB, Trophies, in Game Music etc.) We find out at the same time other companies do. That way it’s fair for everyone. So we found out about trophies the same time say EA, Namco or Capcom did… We then have to stop what we are doing and examine if we have the time (and money) to implement new features. Like I said before those people who write the code (programmers) don’t work for cheap. So I have to make a choice about how I want to spend my projected budget money.

I am not saying you should be charged for features like trophies. I am saying that lets not pretend it doesn’t cost companies anything. It does. Hopefully other companies can go back and include this feature as it’s a cool feature to have. One could even argue that inclusion could actually increase sales (which is also a good thing) Technically, you can be charged for anything. The question is will you pay? I don’t think you are wrong for expecting it. However, all the expecting in the world can’t finance a project the team/company needs to decide if that is what they want to do. If a project wasn’t really successful it’s harder to justify spending more money on it.

PAIN is in a great place because we are continuing to make new content (and contrary to popular belief it is not to rip you off but it is to make a game that is shaped by gamers) that’s why our site is popular. We honestly do listen. Because we are still working on PAIN it becomes easier to incorporate new features into the new content. But if we were working on something completely different it’s harder to open that old code and retrofit. We still have the same team. Developers who made first gen PS3 games might not even be around still. You see what I mean?

PAIN was always meant to grow as we added more to it. People who don’t have anything but the main PAIN area (Downtown) will continue to get updates that will make the 9.99 purchase even more of a good deal. There will even be more modes added to Downtown for free as we go forward. PAIN was always envisioned as this product that grew with user input. It has become better for it. Our characters were always .99 cents though. Also, PAIN was meant to be a little more on the experimental side of things. We want to prove that you can make a game in conjunction with the community. So far it’s been working pretty well. If PAIN ever gets close to a BluRay in terms of cost for everything involved I can assure you that the content will reflect that.

The funny thing about PAIN is if you don’t “get it” I can see how you could feel the way you do. Do me a favor. When the multiplayer patch comes out play a few rounds of HORSE or Fun With Explosives with someone who does “get it” I promise you that you will see the game in a whole new light.

Thanks for taking the time to explain why you were so upset though. I like to learn why people aren’t having a good time with PAIN because maybe there is something we can do to improve that issue. You’ve already given me food for thought.

And on the respect tip.. Right back atcha!

    ~Travis

  • Travis, all these free updates are great… Especially the online multiplayer!

I think the only thing that would top that would be to let us put the granny in the launcher, wearing the cheerleaders outfit! ;)

  • Wow travis is a good developer, this is what sony needs to do, have these type of people on the blog.

People that actually care for the community. Not saying people that post on the blog dont care, but they dont show that they really care.

    Btw..

Pain is well worth the price, Im telling you again, trophies right now will make anything sell, Look at stardust I can name atleast 100 people that bought the game just for trophies.

I honestly hope pain gets some great sales, its a great fun game. Just like warhawk, and pixel junk, great PSN games, that offer a completely different experience.

    This is why I bought a ps3.

  • To Travis and rest of the crew =)

Once upon a time i bought this strange thing called Pain, i kinda liked it but after hour or so i got bored… and i never turned it on till my girlfriend came over with some friends of hers, we had a BLAAAST i discovered that i can make those stupid poses :D and how much fun is bowling, oddly, every time i turned on the game i found another lovely and outrageous aspect of it, now after.. hmm i don’t really remember how long is been out in Europe (i still want to chainsaw guys responsible for localization stuff) it seems im starting to like it more and more… my friends don’t want to play my favorite games like MGS4.. they don’t want to play complex shooters like COD4 or Battlefield:BC all they desire and crave is a round of solid HORSE fun, so guys i tell you do not worry about some of the whining kids, Pain for someone has a curve of getting into it, and you guys did a great great GREAAAT job developing this title, props to you and i am waiting for little ABUSE in “abusement park” :>

ps: i really like the idea of some sumo guy and im totally up for some granny superman action :> (and i mean it GRANNY in a superman suit or something :P)

ps2: a ball of flubber with hat and face would be something great to launch ;)

  • Travis will always be Travis :)

Honestly I don’t know what to say to some people around here. I’m not good with combos either, but I still love this game. I love the town, how lively and fun it is. And mim toss is great!

Anyway, I said this before. I am really looking forward to Amusement Park. Good luck on finishing it.

  • We need to incorperate this game in to home if not already.

  • btw.. i threw my ninja into a chimney and he was launched so high.. we couldn’t see him :D after around 1 minute he started to fall, he hit the ground and bounced off like freaking rubber ball :D

  • My friend just suggested that you guys should make a character of a prisoner… like the old school black and white and little hat. I agree you should definately do that…..

  • wow :) poor guy lol

  • Don’t forget the ball and chain either.

  • your kidding me right……….i buy this game for $10 when it came out………..it has one level…………and some boring game modes……………….and now you come out with this add-one……….and WE GOT TO PAY FOR IT, YOUR KIDDING ME RIGHT YOU HAVE NO IDEA OF HOW PISSED I AM

  • Travis:

Honestly, you are the man with your responses. I’ve seen someone with your position reach out to the community of us (sometimes annoying) gamers.

I won’t start anymore discussions because frankly I don’t think you really want to hear any more criticism on PAIN. The core game is there, and it’s beautiful. Just please show us gamers some love and give us another map. I made it a goal to go over a friends house to see all of the hub-bub, and I can tell you it’s a fantastic game. But I also see where most of these gamers are coming from.

The game has one level, there’s no denying it. It gets old. We all know that by now. But if you guys would be able to manage to give us another, that’s what pretty much everyone is asking for. And you did — but we need to pay for it. It’s seeming that it’s becoming a trend; for example in SSHD, where we are forced to buy another $10 worth of add-ons in order to get 100% of achievements. And I’m sure as a gamer yourself you know how completionists cannot stand this fact.

All in all, it’s your game, we may have input, but you guys are the last call, and all we are asking is to maybe throw this one toward us. They’ve paid $10 for a great, yet somewhat uncomplete game. I know all the hard work you guys have put into this map and more importantly into this game.

  • **I’ve -never- seen someone with your position reach out to the community.

  • Travis Williams

@Al2x: Now you can’t say that anymore. :) Mission Accomplished

See you on the PAIN blog!

  • Yeah that thing with the trophies needing addons so you can complete them all is a bit weird. I’m not sure if this is Sony’s doing or the game devs. Surely Sony made it to be somewhat addictive with the whole levelling up like a wow-grinding mong. But maybe Sony is pushing this idea to get more sales of addons, or maybe it’s the devs just trying to support every addon that comes out with trophies for the fun of the players that buy it.
If there ever was a free addon with a map or level, I bet we’d scream like that granny. Outraged if there aren’t any trophies.

I’m fine with paying for this addon, seeing as it is bigger and costs less than the original PAIN. Bit suprised it’s less than $6,99. Can’t believe people are whining about paying such a small amount. Eat less burgers and get more PAIN! If you guys want more levels after this they can’t do it all for free you know…

I just wish it would require a little less hardcore maniac skills. And fainting goats added.

  • Btw, I know you said the EU prices will be reasonable the same(calculated). But if SCEE screws us with the price again, I’m going to start a “Flood SCEE with currency-calculators” action… because they really need them.

  • and 1 more question should we be xpecting something spetial from you guys at E3? it’ll be cool if you awnser my question

  • and 1 more question should we be expecting something special from you guys at E3? it’ll be cool if you answer my question
sorry i had to correct my mistakes lol

  • Thanks for the reply jcoker. Now will there be a bundle that comes with downtown and this one. Seeing as I have not bought Pain yet it would be neat to be able to get both at the same time.

  • With the Trophie update in PAIN will it be that you have to re-do everything and get all of your trophies again or will it just see all of your trophies you already have and add them to your list of obtained trophies? Or even will there be a whole new set of trophies to get?

  • Wow, it’s great to see so much response from the developers on the comments pages :-)

I notice real life opportunities for creating “Pain” all the time since playing your game, haha.

How about making a character that’s on a bike?
Would that be too difficult for the engine?
It should have special powers, in that it can launch farther/higher due to it having wheels, haha.

  • Or a character that sits on a rocket… (BOOM)

  • Ok dude listen up. Don’t try and berate me or try and explain yourself away. I don’t care what you do or who you have backing you, I’m not going to be another drone out there for Idolminds to try and suck money out of.

Pain’s characters are nothing more than skins with different sound effects. The physics between each character does not change, and why should I pay an extra $1 each time I want to use the other characters that should have been in the game in the first place.

Don’t try and say that I’m alone or the minority in my opinion either.

Let me quote some reviews of Pain for you to highlight this point. I believe they speak for themselves.

-Gamespot – “…the volume of content you get can make it feel like you’re just playing a demo at times.”
“The biggest complaint to be lodged against Pain, though, is that for the current $9.99 asking price, it feels a little lean. ”
“…we could’ve used more stuff from the start.”

    -1up-
“…it’s also the only level right now; more are promised as downloadable additions, but having a level select screen simply rubs it in further.”
“The selectable characters are significantly more insulting, with one to start, one to unlock, and two right there on the screen as well that have to be purchased separately.”
“As a $10 title though, it feels a bit thin on content regardless of the execution.”

    -GameDaily-
“…this is a shallow video game that offers up few laughs.”
“…PAIN is little more than a novelty, a tech demo that offers a couple of hours of amusement.”

    -IGN-
“Why weren’t these elements included? Right now, there’s a ton of achievements with one barebones place to go get them. Ten dollars is a high cost of entry for something so sparse,…”
“You’re paying $10 for two characters and one map…”
“Pain can be fun but has a number of shortcomings that make it feel like a demo…”

This could go on if you’d like.

No one forced me to buy the game. I bought it on a whim and wanted to try something different, but after 20 minutes passed I wanted to try something else. I felt that the inclusion of one level was a rip off when I found out that it was the only one included. I was half-expecting another one to unlock at least. It would be like paying $10 for a new game and only getting the first level, would that satisfy anyone who thought they were getting a finished package? No.

Also I’ve never met a spokesperson who tries their best to berate and talk down to their customers as much as you. People are entitled to their opinions, and without us their would be no reason for you to be in business. Remember that.

  • @192
Agreed. I also felt when I purchased PAIN.I was like: IS THAT IT? and my friend said YES THAT IS IT. I was sought of disappointed on the price and the only 1 environment.

  • Just like to say I absolutely love pain. Most original game idea I have ever seen. Excellent work!

I really like the parts of the Amusement Park that I have seen already, and think it will be a great addition. I cannot wait to be set loose in it!

A question though: I know you have sort of finished with Downtown now, but is there ever going to be a chance to have a futuristic and a medieval style versions of Downtown? I just think that both would have extreme possibilities of some serious Pain.

Also, can you give us any “hints” as to what we can expect from the PlayStation characters?

  • Ha! I meant “Pain”, not that I love pain, as in hurting pain. I meant Pain as in the game, obviously, oh you know what I mean!

  • After reading this blog post, i touched myself. And it was incredible.

  • @vitz3. What’s your beef with Travis? I read all his responses and not once does he berate or talk down to any of us. Don’t get me wrong I do agree with you as to when Pain first launched it was sparse but now there’s lot’s of free stuff that was added outside of characters. Also calling anyone who does not agree completely with you and actually enjoys the game a Idolminds drone is a little overboard. No need to get so personal. It’s just a game remember?

  • terminatorvsmtrx

    @ travis….

This level looks sick and thanks for replying to our questions even though we have a tendency to be slightly harsh and demanding. And I agree with a lot of the comments here about being able to launch granny.. that would be hilarious.

  • terminatorvsmtrx

whoa vitz.. as a matter of fact you are a minority on here.. travis is easily the best when it comes to responding to our questions and letting us know whats going on, and u gotta sit on here and give him as hard of a time as possible

  • I read most of the 4 pages of comments. I am looking forward to the addon. I know that multiplayer simutainous launching was commented on. But I think split-screen multiplayer from different parts of the city at the same time would really help the multiplayer aspect. I also think that for single player, it would be more fun to have more enviornments and then allow the player to free place their launcher for better replay value. Or at least more predefined launch sites and the ability to move between then in-game. But I still think the biggest replay issue is the lack of environments. Even with this addon, this will only be the 2nd environment. Would rather have more variety even if it meant smaller “worlds”.

  • @vitz3

Just because you’re god awful at the game and work wal mart which means 10 dollars is an equivalent of a days work for you. Doesn’t give you the right to abuse the production team who are giving you an update on NEW CONTENT (kind of ironic that you’re using that as the main point of your argument huh?) – I could quote small parts from any review and paint a bad picture of a product, be it anything: a film, a computer game, a book [DELETED]: fact of the matter is, that it’s not fully representative of the product as a whole, nor it’s review.

I know of no other game producers that make the effort to interact with their consumer base on the level that the PAIN staff do, nor do I know of any ps3 games that cost 10 dollars and give me as much satisfaction, randomness, and longevity that PAIN has for me. Hell, I haven’t played gta4 for months.

I know I’m not alone on that one.
