Burnout Paradise – Codename: Cagney update is live

Wow! Week #3 for Criterion Games on the PlayStation Blog!

Week #1 we set the blog alight with details of the new game modes coming to Burnout Paradise in the Codename: Cagney update.
(And mentioned 1080i support for those who have HD TVs that only support that mode!)

Week#2 we talked about the Timed Challenges coming to Burnout Paradise in the Codename: Cagney update. (And broke the news that we’re supporting PlayStation Trophies retroactively in Burnout Paradise at some point, too!)

This week…

Well, we’re pleased to announce that Codename: Cagney – the FREE update game of changing content for Burnout Paradise is here!

To get it – just put your Burnout Paradise disk into your PlayStation 3, launch the game and it’ll download automatically.

It’s that easy – and it’s all FREE – new online game modes, new vehicles and a stack of enhancements and fixes to make playing Burnout Paradise even better.

But even with all that there’s more – there’s the Game’s new Live Page, which is the thing we’re really excited about and want to let you know about this week.

Burnout Paradise - Live Page

The Live Page does two cool things:

First, it serves up news about the game – so that’s news about updates and the kind of stuff you’d expect on criteriongames.com, but it’s also news about what’s happening in the game – so, expect to find news about what you’ve done in Paradise City as well as about what’s happening online, like when we hit the 100 millionth crash, for example.

Secondly (and this is the really, really cool bit), it’s where we can, using the Game Calendar, create what we’re calling ‘Live Broadcast Gameplay’. This is how it works:

If you check out the Game Calendar, you’ll see certain dates on it are ringed. These represent ‘Live Events’ that will occur on that day. In the news panel on the Live Page there’ll be a corresponding story telling you about what’s happening on those days.

So, for example:

Saturday 12th July 2008 – Prize Cars Weekend
Where for one day, if you go online we’ll let you try out all of the Carbon and XS Cars (that are normally available only when you complete the offline game) for you to test drive in races and Freeburning.

As this shows – it really allows us to mix up the game, and we’ve got a schedule packed with cool events that stretch out through the summer.

This breaks down as:

  • Test Drive Tuesdays
Every Tuesday, we’re going to mix things up online by focusing the game around a specific set of cars. For a whole day, your online junkyard will look radically different. This coming week (Tuesday 15th July 2008) will see only Speed Boost cars online.
  • Face Off Thursdays
Every Thursday, we’re going to mix up racing (both ranked and unranked.) Everyone’s junkyard will be as normal, but in races we’ll supply a certain set of cars to race in. This will really level the playing field in racing.
  • The other great thing about Live Events is that it allows us to award our players with all kinds of cool stuff. So, starting in a few weeks’ time:

    Graduation Weekends
In these, we’ll let you try out new cars and new liveries for a whole weekend. Over the course of the weekend, you’ll be able to test drive our vehicle of choice, and if you want to keep it, then we’ll set up an online challenge for you to complete.

The first such event will be our “Mount Olympus” event in which you’ll get to test drive the new Hunter Olympus, and, if you win an Online Road Rage event in it, you’ll get to keep it forever.

We’ll be running multiple Graduation Weekends that will introduce even more vehicles and for those players who participate in all of them, there’ll be a special prize.

So there you go – more exciting and innovative stuff from Criterion Games. Now, let’s see what we can come up with for Week #4!

    • I have to re-buy this game…if i would’ve known you guys would be supporting it this much after launch i would’ve never sold it.

    • I cannot download the update. I have the PAL Version of the game and tried it 4 times already. Always getting a failure message after 96%. =(

    • Round of applause to criterion games!!!!!
This is by far the best patch released for any game I have seen. A new free car in a patch is brilliant, ye have outdone incognito for game patches this really is a great job. So much is packed into this update its hard to remember it all anyway I cant wait to get my hands on this new truck, thanks criterion!

Just 1 question though. I don’t mean to sound ungrateful after ye releasing a great patch for the game but it has to be asked. How is the trophy patch progressing?
I know ye said ye will tell us as soon as its all good but is there anything you can tell us?

    • great update i am getting it now

    • Great update, been looking forward to it for a while now! Thanks to the entire Criterion Games team!

    • I really have to consider buying this game, will it have trophy support in the near future?

    • I’m downloading it right now.

      Thanks a bunch, guys!

    • @6 – C-h-a-o-s:

      Yes, it’ll have trophy support.

I’m anxious to try the custom soundtracks. 8)

    • You guys are really doing a good job of supporting the community post launch.

The price just dropped to $40, so I encourage all to pick it up.

    • This sounds great.

I didn’t have this one before, but after reading this article, I think I may just purchase.

      Thanks for the info, appreciated.

    • @6

regarding trophy….this is from the above post

    • Awesome, I only hope more devs provide such support after they released their games.

    • Yeah! now this is the kind of love and support i like for a $60 game that has online features. Can’t wait till August for the bikes, night stages and um um planes? lol. Should be cool though.

    • @GGCAN

    • ok….i guess its not posting my comments

    • @13 – stennex:

Actually, the game costs $40, and not $60. :P

    • Thanks Criterion! That’s awesome. I wish other devs would do the same, you make them look hyper lazy.

On a side note, could you pinpoint on a possible “date” for trophy support. Like in the following days, weeks or this fall this summer (because I know giving true dates ends up in disaster if not confirmed lol). Thanks

    • Greatest update ever! Thanks Criterion.

      I’m playing right now.

    • Damn, I am always getting the failure code (FFFFFFFB). What is wrong?

    • Ok well you’ve sold me on this game and I’ll be getting today after work!

Thank you for not abonding the game and providing the great updates! I can’t wait for throphy support!

All other game developers should take a hint from you on how to be great!

      Thanks guys!

    • I don’t have this game, but it is really great to see how much you support this game.

    • I wait for a minute, that is a few hours or so, my guts tells me I’m going to get that freaking Late Boomer trophy. Then I can start off with my addiction Burnout Paradise again :-D

Are there many female gamers playing this game? Personally “I love it”! Its my second most favorite game on the PS3 :-)

      Cheers,

      ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

If you ask me it was already dumb to sell it in the first place :-P

    • Wow this update sounds great,Thanks Criterion! I will keep playing this game for a long time.

    • great now i’m going to get it after work is nice to see you guys take care of us the gaming community

    • I’ve finally given up, because of the support this game recieves from the developers, I had to buy it. New, I might add.

    • Just bought this game because the update was announced. Really sucked me in, much better then Legends and Dominator for PSP I played before.
      Thanx, Criterion!

    • Love the update but I thought the easy drive menu was supposed to loop from top to bottom; it doesn’t for me.

    • Criterion Games keep upping the Level with each update its great for us gamers, Burnout Paradise is by far one of the best Racing games for the PS3 to date.

    • At this present moment only Super Stardust have trophies, time to speed up Sony, don’t you think?

    • This is Awesome! I haven’t played Burnout since I got it in Feb., but now I will attempt to finish the game, and try out these new events! The Online Road Rage sounds amazing, and I am downloading the update as I speak. Thank you so much for the trophy support(my only game, so far).
I love Criterion Games, and its Burnout Series!

    • Thanks Simon and to the DEV’S at Criterion Games for this awsome content i havent played burnout Paradise yet plan on buying to add to my PS3 collection since i am a new owner offically on june 12 MGS4 Bundle

keep up the graet work i loves to burnout series i have all of them on PS2

    • As I said before, I give you guys the hugest props for keeping up on this game. You need to show other developers how you can continue to output update after killer update… and all for free !

Whatever you folks are doing, you’re doing it well and as soon as I get the cash, I’m picking up this game, if only to support you for the support you’re giving us.

See how that works “other developers”… you continue to support your game, even after it’s released and people will come to support you !

    • Man, I can’t believe I sold it, I played it for weeks on end and sold it for 25$ bucks, but Future Shop is selling it for 40$ so I’m going right now and picking this one up again and KEEPING IT this time….great job guys at Criterion, you are simply AMAZING !

    • So its out already? As in NOW? As in if I put the disc in, I can enjoy all said features?

    • A game well worth it to this date. Good job with the update, I’m about to download it!

    • I guess it is ready! (after reading through the other posts). Woohoo! And I’m off to download it!

    • This is how you support a product! This is what all developers should strive for in terms of keeping your fanbase and growing it. This is how you fine tune a product… Thank you Criterion, thanks for the PS3 lovin and thanks for this great game.

      See everyone in Paradise!

    • It’s amazing how many people have said they’re going to buy it, or rebuy it. I only bought it last weekend after months of trying to decide whether to or not.

I have to say, this is by far the best supported game I have ever heard of! You’ve done an absolutely fantastic job, and you definetly deserve all the money and loyal fans you get from making this game.

      Well done Criterion!

    • Wow, awesome update. I passed this game up so far, but man, I’ll definitely have to look at it again….

    • Trophy support ASAP Please!!! ;) Nice one ;)

    • Just a quick question for anyone who knows… Can you only unlock the Hunter Olympus this weekend, or is that a sort of prerelease? Because it isn’t fair for those of us who can’t play this weekend otherwise.

    • Maybe I understood it wrong but wasn’t the game suppose to run now in 1080i when your TV supports it? Well my PS3 is on 1080i standard but when I run the game it says 780p in my screen. Not that I mind, the game looks pretty enough to me, just wondering… that’s all.

    • The new sound effects you added are pretty sick. Awesome update, if I didn’t have to sleep right now before work I’d be rockin that game. Hit me up later if anyone wants to do the timed challenges.

    • amazing job on this game and its support!!

all devs/publisher should learn from this people, this is how you make a ps3 game and then support it

    • Does the use of that icon in the screenshot mean we will be able to sync with iCal, or did you guys just like it so much you “borrowed” it :)

Either way is cool, but it would be sweet to sync up.

    • What a great game, i purchased last week and i am extremely pleased, cant wait to play my soundtracks to it!

    • I don’t understand why anyone would rate this post anything less than a ‘5’. I don’t even own the game and I gave it a five just because i think its awesome that the devs are still supporting this game and adding new features. poo on you whoever rated this down… may your first born child be a stillborn, J/K. but seriously grow up.

      peace,
      Lh

    • Are the in-game soundtracks for this game using a proprietary player (like PAIN, High Velocity Bowling, Super Stardust HD) or is it using the new XMB soundtrack feature in Firmware 2.40? I have the game and I can’t wait to update later today or tomorrow!

    • @ StalkingSilence

It uses a scheme very similar to Super Stardust HD. At any time while driving, you press right to access the Easy Drive menu, then scroll to the bottom, where you can select original or custom soundtrack. Then, when you select custom, you get a list of the songs on your hard drive like with SSHD.
