Inside the Developers Studio: Tsubasa Inaba

65 2

For our 3rd in our soooo-close-to-E3 interview series, meet Tsubasa Inaba, currently working on Siren: Blood Curse (did you download the free demo yesterday?). Having worked with Sony Computer Entertainment in Japan, he brings a different point of view; comparing E3 to TGS, talking about working with Team ICO, and what it was like behind the scenes when Final Fantasy VII came out. Here are the questions that *you* asked (and the Blog readers who asked them, in parentheses):

  • If you could choose where E3 was hosted, where would it be? (Dubbedinenglish)
  • Do you think huge trade events like E3 are going to last? (Jeigh)
  • When did you know for sure that you belonged in the video game business? (Sindress)
  • If you could re-make any previous-generation game for the PS3, which title would it be, and what would it be like? (KazeEternal)
  • If you could say one thing to the fans of your game/series out there, what would it be? (Xanog)

Tsubasa Inaba is an International Software Development Producer at SCEA Santa Monica. He’s been a part of SCE for 11 years, and has worked on Dark Cloud, ICO, Gran Turismo 3 & 4, and Tourist Trophy to name a few.

Now that you know who he is and what he’s showing at E3 – what game-related questions do you want me ask Tsubasa next week? Tell me below.

Next interview (Monday): Rusty Buchert (Linger In Shadows)

  • You know, Jeff, you are really good at building anticipation.

I look forward to the week of E3 every year, and I feel like this is going to be a special one for the PS3. And then you decide to confirm *twice* that we’re getting quite a treat on the PSN next week.

It’s like having Christmas every six months. I seriously hope E3 doesn’t go the way of the Dodo….

  • I’d like to own Siren on a Blu-ray Disc instead of deleting things to make room on my hard drive for the episodes.

  • Fix the camera.

    P.S.

@52 and anyone else who want more space.
    Internal SATA 2.5 inch:
250GB Western Digital HDD at Circuit City for $89.
320GB Western Digital HDD many places for $116.

  • Awesome interview!

Does anybody knows if I have to buy an update for Super Star Dust HD to play split screen?

Go the game: $9.99 and the add-on $5.99
There’s nothing else on PSN to purchase for SSDHD.

  • Hajimemashite Inaba-san. Watashi wa oranda ni sunde itte Anouschka desu. Yorushiku onegaishimasu.

    :-D

  • Geez isn’t your system just too tough too handle.. okay try again…

Hajimemashite Inaba-san, watashi wa Oranda ni sunde itte Anouschka desu. Ookina jousei no ge-mu fan desu. Yoroshiku onegaishimasu :-)

    Hope it works now :-D

  • Rats even Romaji Japanese doesn’t work around here :-(

  • Ask him why the camera in Siren is so bad. It is twitchy, unintuitive and you can only see 45 degrees either side of the player. Ask him if they bothered to test it on gamers, particularly western gamers before they made the demo because it doesn’t seem they did and have stuck to an outdated model. If you think it is only me, some others commented on the camera on the PS forums, as did IGN. At least mention it anyway.

  • Sony we want PSN Cards in Europe!.

    C’mon sony.

  • For the one asking about a sequel to ICO:

Shadow of the Colossus is said to be a prequel to ICO.

The interviews are great! It would be better if there were 10 questions instead of 5, hehe.

  • Loved the (short) demo. I haven’t decided yet which version to buy (download or disk). But I do have a question for Tsubasa: with a handful horror games coming to PS3 this year (like Dead Space and Silent Hill), why should I buy Siren?

  • im glad you think its great for users to get involved cause im bout to get way involved PS BLOG yall bout to hate me

  • @Tsubasa,

Great interview, I want to give you some feedback on Siren: Blood curse.

I played the demo, I can tell it’s going to be one of the creepiest games out there with the scary dark atmosphere you guys create.

However I feel the controls need to be “upgraded” the controls remain very similar to Siren 1 and 2.

The right analog stick should be able to pan the camera 360 degrees.

I understand the right analog stick was set to “limited” camera pan to what I suspect to increase the scariness of the game, but it is causing many western gamers frustration.

The right analog stick camera has a bounce back mechanism which causes some motion sickness after long play time.

I am not sure if your focus testing has revealed this or not but it prevents one from playing the game very long.

  • I’m having problems watching the video. I can never watch videos on this blog. In some of your previous videos, there was a little link or something on the bottom right of the video screen, and clicking on that would take me to another site and I could watch the video. But now, it just sends me back to the blog, and I cannot watch the video. Can anyone help me?

  • Thanks very much both Tsubasa, and Jeff.

The interview was great, and didn’t know the work for ICO was spread otu so wide, that’s fantastic.

I will be buying Siren, but I only want it on a disc :S, so I will either import sicne the Japanese version has English support, or waiting for it to be released.

Jeff, Please can we somehow get Ueda to come in and talk? If he’s ever over in the states, or if he can speak just textually. Would love to ahve soem hitns as to what he’s doing.

  • Great interview Tsubasa and Jeff.

Like most people, I’m excited about this game, but also like most people, I want to see it on Blu-Ray disc. I will mostly import the Japanese version as from what I understand it contains the English version as well.

I am looking forward to playing the full version of this game, but on Blu-Ray, not as a downloadable.

  • My post in this thread was used by MS in there press briefing. I will not allow this to happen again. We need to be able to set our messages to this blog as private.
