12.51 – Developers from Treyarch, EA Tiburon, Ubisoft, Bethesda, 2K Marin, and Lucas Arts are shown on video talking about how much more they’ve learned about programming for the PS3, and how that’s going to pay off in games like Far Cry 2, The Force Unleashed, Prince of Persia, Call of Duty World at War, Madden NFL 09, and Fallout 3. “We’re just beginning to scratch the surface of what PS3 is capable of.”

12.48 – New Hardware package: the 80 GB Core Pack coming this fall $399 – 40 more GB at that price, plus DualShock 3.

12.46 – Lee: “You can stop imagining now.” Video shown featuring lots of DC Legends like Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, the Joker, and more.

12.43 – Mr. Lee is a HUGE MMO fan, been playing since Everquest began… so this is a dream project for him. “Imagine being able to create your own superhero… and help Batman take on the Joker… that’s a cool image.”

12.41 – SOE – Sony Online Entertainment – bringing titles to PlayStation 3. Jim Lee (of comic book fame) on stage now to preview DC Universe online. He’s doing 1-armed push-ups. Don’t hurt your inking hand!

12.35 With an install base of over 35 million worldwide, many more PSP games are on the way. Montage shown, featuring Patapon 2, The Force Unleashed, Super Stardust Portable, Madden 09, LocoRoco 2, NBA 09 The Inside, Lego Batman, and Buzz Master Quiz.

12.30 – Eric demonstrates how to copy movies to the PSP. You can do this either through a PS3, or through the PC Store. BTW, this video download service will be available TONIGHT (applause). We’ll be adding new titles each week.

12.29 – “How long will it take to download an SD movie?” The answer is about an hour for a 2 hour movie. However, with progressive downloading, you can begin watching your video almost instantaneously.

12.25 – Eric Lempel takes the stage (you remember him, right), to show a live demo of the video download service – it’s part of the existing PLAYSTATION Store – there’s a new video tab. Each studio has a page. Eric shows how to buy, rent, or preview a movie.

12.23 – Jack talks about the new video download service. On Day 1 – Sony Pictures, Fox, MGM, Lions Gate, Warner Brothers, Disney, and more will have content available. A huge differentiator – you can take movies and tv on the go via PSP.

sonypresser12

12.19 – Jack Tretton PlayStation Home: “Your patience will be more than rewarded.” We’ve got great publisher support on game-specific spaces. A new video is debuted showing more of what Home’s experience will be all about.

12.17 – Gran Turismo TV introduced – racing video content coming to Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, shows like Top Gear and other original content in Hi Def. Gearheads will definitely be all over this. Lots of international content. Launches August 1st.

12.14 – Jack Tretton: “We’re not interested in filling up our store with games that nobody wants to play, just so we can say ‘we have the most games.'” He follows this up with a trailer showing a number of upcoming PSN games like PixelJunk Eden, Fat Princess, Crash Commando, PAIN Amusement Park, Flower, Ragdoll Kung-Fu and Siren: Blood Curse.

12.11 – 180 million pieces of downloaded content since launch. New stuff coming to the PLAYSTATION Store – Ratchet and Clank Future: Quest for Booty. “Like a summer blockbuster – high quality, less expensive.” Q4B will answer the questions to Clank’s disappearance at the end of RCF: Tools of Destruction. Price will be $14.99.

12.09 – PLAYSTATION Network – we’re instituting a single sign on this fall – online on a PC, a PSP, PS3. Check your friends list on a PC (I think a few of you have asked for that).

12.07 – New PS2 bundle coming this fall – a new Lego Batman Bundle, along with a Justice League movie, for $149.

12.03 – Let’s talk about PS2: More than 130 new titles coming to PS2. Not bad for a 9 year old system.

12.01 – Among the announcements – we’re turning our attentions to Latin America… and a announcement of PS3 Greatest Hits. Huge applause for sackboy, Alex, and LBP!

11.58 – Alex Evans of Media Molecule is out on the stage to help Jack work through the business side of things… more on this later…

sonypresser10

11.56 – Ted has left the stage, Jack Tretton is back out to talk about user generated content. “We’ve seen a glimpse of that future – it’s called LittleBigPlanet.”

11.54 – More, even huger enemies/ships shown in an R2 video. An Idaho location has been mentioned as well. Add that to Chicago, San Francisco, and the California redwood forests.

11.53 – PS video from the Press Conference will be available on PSN, you’ll wanna make sure to see this.

11.51 – Did I mention this thing is huge? Cheers from the audience as the live demo ends.

11.50 – Ted is taking on a 300 foot leviathan (you may have read about this in GamePro) with a rocket launcher. On paper it’s one thing – in full motion, it’s something else entirely…

11.48 – Here’s a look at Resistance 2, Ted Price from Insomniac Games takes the stage.

11.46 – Jack Tretton: “If PlayStation in 2007 was all about hardware, PlayStation in 2008 is all about software.”

11.45 – Jack Tretton: “The PLAYSTATION 3 is the most complete and future-proof Blu-ray player available.”

PlayStation Press Conference

11.41 – OK back in my seat, as CEO Jack Tretton reacquaints us with the history of PlayStation and Sony Computer Entertainment. “We take a longer look ahead.”

The press conference is just about to get started and I’m up on stage playing Metal Gear Solid 4. You might be able to see me as soon as G4 starts their live video stream (look to the left side of the stage).

I’ll keep updating this post with news from the event, so check back often or keep your eyes on our twitter feed for the latest.

  • Sony isn’t going to reply to anyone in this topic. They’ll just let this slide away hoping everyone forgets about their screw ups.

They obviously will never respond to anyone asking about RPGs and exclusive third party games. Might as well just spam their email, at least that will bother them quite a lot.

  • I’m curious when Sony last did a situation analysis, because it’s evident they’re asleep at the wheel. The gaffe of having the PS3 title Valkyria Chronicles on the PSP game montage summed things up for me.

I keep waiting for the moment when Sony will take charge and pull off a major coup like MS did on Monday but I may as well just forget about that ever happening. Seriously, why wasn’t the Square Enix prez at the Sony press conference? Why weren’t the Capcom guys showing off a PS3 build of Resident Evil 5? And what’s the story on MIA titles like White Knight Chronicles or Gran Turismo 5? Having a CG God Of War 3 trailer and announcing yet another shooter isn’t enough. Does Japan even exist at Sony anymore?

The bit about exclusives was funny, with all the talk about how important MGS4 being only on PS3 was I expected a lead in to a couple other third-party exclusive announcements but I really should’ve known better to expect that. This isn’t exactly a foreign concept here, considering there were a billion of them on PS2. Which makes the startling lack of them on PS3 even more baffling.

I finally realize how Nintendo fans felt during the Gamecube years. Microsoft does such a great job of exciting their hardcore fanbase and it’s shameful to see how Sony just doesn’t measure up to it.

  • guys dont blame sony for everything, it costs alot to make one ps3, especialy the cell proccessor, and the blu ray dvd part. if those didnt exist, the ps3 would be nothing, and you would probly have a 360 instead. sony’s doing their best, they lost 3.3 billion due to the high cost of the ps3, and some other stuff. the ps3 would be less of a gaming console if it didnt cost so much to make.

  • and i think sony should REALLY REALLY put a FFXIII trailer on the ps store, in high quality to show that ps3 is its home, and stuff like that.

  • @652 y wuld Sony show off those games at there conference? it wuld be a waste of time because we all know that they are on the ps3 and if they showed off those games it wuld take away the time from the ps3 exclusive games..M$ only showed of fallout 3,RE5 and FF13 because they have no exclusive titles coming out except for gears 2 and fable 2 (and dont let me waste my breathe on crappy M$ exclusives like banjo and viva pinfuk ma A**)

  • so is there anyway to know if anything like this is coming to japan. I’m an american in japan and i really miss some of the shows. I was wondering if you could pass the word to sony japan and get them to do the same. or maybe make a partner ship with Tsutaya movie rental company or something. with the Europe and now America being up to date on the modern world it seems kinda strange that japan is getting left behind. so could you either pass the word or unlock one of those services to be capatible for japan. i mean blu-ray is unlocked between japan and the US and that is awesome. Its great that i can buy american blu-ray disc. so why can’t we get the downloadable content. i think the only thing that could happen is that you make a profit

  • oh and 1 more thing…R.I.P Nintendo u really dropped the ball on us hardcore gamers…do we look like we care about fkn wii music wen we have GH and RB? and another wii sports? WHERES MY FKN METRIOD AND ZELDA? looks like im sellin my wii and soley focusing on my ps3 from now on with their AMAZING line up

  • I’m glad to see more new good titles coming to the ps3, but Sony I’m really tired of Shooters. The idea behind MAG is cool but really I’m suffering for the lack of RPG games in the ps3. You can´t trust Square-Enix anymore so I hope some day see a good first party RPG from Sony, with Killzone 2 released I hope to see some money invested in RPG.

Microsoft is focusing efforts in this genre so just remember what made ps1 and ps2 so cool, the diferent kinds of games that were available.

  • Sony definitely isn’t doing their best. If they were doing their best, FF13 would still be exclusive. I think this years E3 conference was even worse that the 2006 disaster, simply because of the huge loss of FF13 and how Sony had nothing to counter it.

R-Signal is absolutely right. The fact that Sony couldn’t even get the platform for Valkyria, one of the few PS3 third party exclusives, correct tells a lot about how clueless they really are. Two years ago, I never couldve imagined the Square president at a Microsoft press conference, let alone FF13 appearing on their machine, yet here we are. How did Sony mess up so badly that they let these games slip through their fingers, and how does the 360 get so many RPGs and the PS3 barely any? What happened to the awesome Sony that published FF7 in America and helped make it a blockbuster hit?

This is just frustrating as hell, I purchased a PS3 with the intention of it having a variety of games similar to the PS2. Seriously, MAG? We already have Killzone, Resistance, and Socom. Do we honestly need yet another shooter? Where’s GT5 or Team Ico’s new game?

    Get with the program Sony.

  • What are you guys talking about, Sony has AAA third-party exclusives! Look at Haze and Lair! LULZ.

    *tear*

  • i’m new to Playstation and i thought Jack Tretton did a good presentation, seems like a real nice guy.
    killzone 2 is looking great
ragdoll kung fu looks great also
some good games coming our way
    thanks Sony

  • The E3 this year is quite disappointing for me. Square-Enix has betrayed us, and there’s not vary much excusive game for Playstation3. You guys(Sony) need to find some ways to handle this situation, or PS3 might lost at the battle this generation.

First, You guys should pay more attation to Japan market. Maybe accquiring more studioes such as ACQUIRE and Level5 is a good idea. And maintain a good relationship with SEGA and Konami. Don’t let these two alliances leave.(Especially you should make MGS stay excusive on PS family.)

Second, there are more than 20 studioes working for you, but many of them just don’t release any games on PS3 this two years. Tell them to kick their ass as soon as possible. PS3 need more excusive games, since the 3rd party company can’t be 100% trust, the 1st party studioes should make more effort. Oh, by the way, tell the guys in SCEJ stop making those “little games” on PSN, you need some big titles such as ICO, Shadow of the Colossus ,Siren ,White Knight Story for Japan market.

To make up the damage cause by Square-Enix’s betray, you guys should do something as soon as possible!

  • Please read all this, it also contains some PS3 related news:

Here’s from speaking at a roundtable with Jack Tretton about FFXIII:

“Sony’s Tretton: ‘Disappointed’ In Multiplatform FFXIII Through MS’ ‘Currying Favor’ Speaking at a roundtable Q&A attended by Gamasutra, Sony’s Jack Tretton has been discussing Final Fantasy XIII’s move from a PlayStation 3 exclusive to a multiplatform title, suggesting Microsoft has spent most of their money “trying to curry favor with third parties”.

When asked whether he was disappointed about the surprise announcement that the game would also debut on Xbox 360 in the West, Tretton noted: “I guess disappointed is clearly an appropriate term.”

Tretton then launched into invective discussing Sony’s decision to concentrate heavily on internal development, noting that it constituted “over half of our employee base all over the world”, and adding that “…we’ve built up our base and that’s where we’ve chosen to spend our dollars.”

However, he warned: “I think Microsoft has spent the majority of their money on trying to curry favor with third parties” – implying that Final Fantasy XIII moving to multiplatform was more of a Microsoft-subsidized decision than one guided purely by sales reasons.

Tretton concluded: “I think software companies look and say ‘there’s no check big enough for us to do exclusive development’ …I think it’s going to be harder and harder to have third-party exclusives as we move forward.”

Gamasutra will have more from Tretton’s roundtable Q&A in the near future, including lots more detail on the state of Sony.”

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

My personal thoughts on this, I believe that Sony can do and should do more effort to ensure exclusive RPG’s, but we also need to except the fact that exclusive third party support, is history. People running off now to the 360 is IMO just as much of an overreacting response like M$ is doing against Sony. I’ve been unreasonable at the beginning as well when I just found out about FFXIII, but I came to my senses, thought very good about this and found out that Sony is just “my home”. Even if that means not the large RPG library I want to, but like some people has said before…. there are far more worse things in the world to worry about. Plus, I believe we’ll get to see games such as Tales of Vesperia and SOIV on the PS3 with extra’s and probably even better quality.

To make the wounds any lighter, Nippon Ichi will announce an exclusive RPG for on the PS3 tomorrow in Japan. Lets hope it won’t be Japan Only.

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

More news, Europe will get the video download service in 2009, although its not sure if the launch will be Europe wide at the same time.

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Home will release in America and Europe at the same time.

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

At least Europe will get Ratchet & Clank Quest for Booty on Blu Ray as well on PSN. Probably as Europe still doesn’t have PSN tickets. Not sure about the United States. This has officially been announced by David Reeves of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe.

  • I do have a comment to the guys at Sony who put those footages together. When I look back at the conference, first of all the Valkyria Chronicles mistake could of course be prevented. Second of all Eternal Sonata footage was only like 1 second, this should have been longer. Third of all I didn’t see any footage of Disgaea 3, an exclusive SRPG, which is releasing next month in the US. Fourth of all, footage of White Knight Chronicles would have been very much welcomed. Several games won’t hit before 2009, but if I’m not mistaken WKC is absolutely going to release by the end of 2008 in Japan and before the end of the fiscal year in the rest of the world.

  • I DO NOT WANT HOME OR MINI GAMES THAT YOU HAVE TO PAID TO PLAY it makes me sad…

I MEAN COME ON, IM LOOKING NOW JUST HOPING/DREAMING THE SAME EXACT THING I GET WITH PS1 and PS2 “THE GAMES”, not EMPTY PROMISES with things like HOME and craps like that and features semi-complete like the in-game music option fiasco…
Sony: hey guys FINALLY INGAME MUSIC with FW 2.4
    USERS: YAY, FINALLY
    Date of RELEASE
Users: NOT A SINGLE GAME SUPPORT THIS, IT LOOKS LIKE IS NOT EVEN THERE…
the developer HAVE TO ADD IT, so no ingame music JUST LAWL

if the system CANNOT DO IT for any kind of reason, JUST SAY IT stop making [DELETED] like this… EMPTY PROMISES AND SEMICOMPLETE ADDITIONS…

  • I find it hilarious that people keep saying that exclusives are dead when Microsoft has the majority of 3rd party exclusive titles.

  • whats up with all this “no varitety in the ps3 game library”? EXCUSE ME….with exclusive varitety titles like Little Big Planet, DC Universe, The Agency, Home (typically a game itself) and others….where do u guys get off? i think Sony has a good balance of shooters like R2 and KZ2 with adventure games like GOW and RACHET with the before mentioned *varitety* games….whereas M$ is tryign to copy Home and mii’s with their avatars and trying to aim to casual gamers with crappy games like viva pinata and banjo (which WAS awesome but now they killed it) Sony is doing good and announcements like MAG will only push them further…256 PLAYERS camon which other platform has that!!

  • When addressing the subject of RPGs on the PS3, people always drift towards hopeful, towards the future. “Well, Eternal Sonata is coming…” “White Knight Story is coming…” “Final Fantasy XII is still on the PS3…” (2010, maybe? And what a hammer to the crotch for Sony too – try and delude yourself otherwise, but it was a huge coup, for shock value alone not to mention what else.)

In the future, I’m sure that my PS3 will reward me with a few quality RPGs. As far as the now, I’m playing every JRPG I can get my hands on with my 360. And I’m playing them NOW, as in today, or in a month or two when they release.

Valkyria Chronicles, Disgaea 3 and a 1 year old port of Eternal Sonata (that I picked up at EB on sale for $19.99 CDN), JUST DON’T CUT IT.

And if MS continues their Japanese/ RPG poaching, I highly doubt that the PS3 will ever catch up in both quality or quantity with this genre. And most of what it gets will be ports, a year or two later.

    No thanks.

    Cheers,
    – C

P.S. I’m still very excited about White Knight. Sony needs to show some stuff and soon; especially for that game.

  • WHO THE FUK PLAYS JAPENESE RPG’S? LIKE PLAY A REAL GAME LIKE MGS4, RESISTANCE, COD, OR MOTORSTORM AND GET UR FKN ANDRENALINE UP!! STOP PLAYING CARTOON A$$ RPG’S WITH FEMALE LOOKING MALE PROTAGONISTS AND PLAY A HEART RACING TITLE U FKN LIMP A$$ HINTAI PEDOPHILES

  • Moron alert

  • Sony, whomever decided to put Blu-Ray in the PS3…thank him, over and over and over and over again. Because without that, and the loss of all of the exclusive titles save 1 where would the PS3 be?

I have to give it to Microsoft. And I HATE Microsoft. Think about it…a console that breaks consistently, that copies other’s ideas, and is ridiculously loud…is beating you, badly. You’ll probably look on this board and see all of the cries for RPGs and think “that’s a small vocal few”. But what you aren’t getting is that Sony FANS are coming to this site. We want DESPARATELY for the PS3 to come out on top but you aren’t giving us anything to work with. The Xbox gathered all of the 1st person shooter fans. They aren’t going to leave that console for Socom, Resistance, Killzone OR MAG. Concentrate on the other genres. Uncharted was fantastic, Ratchet was superb, inFamous is going to be great…but you need RPGs. If you would have at least SHOWN White Knight Story, tons of people would have more confidence in the systems future. I TRY to buy 3rd party games on the PS3, but Microsoft keeps on getting special exclusive content for their versions so I’m forced, as a consumer looking for the best deal, to purchase the ones for their system. Please take note of what everyone is saying on the boards and make the needed changes, otherwise, might as well go the Sega route and make games for all consoles.

What a difference a console generation makes when bad decisions are made.

  • SONY!!!! YOU BETTER ADVERTISE LIKE CRAZY FOR FFXIII!!!!! DONT LET IT ALL GO TO THE 360!!!

AND PLEASE TRY TO PUT A FFXIII TRAILER ON THE PS STORE!!!!!!!!! IT WILL HELP ALOT! AND SHOW THAT PLAYSTATION IS FF’S HOME!!!! PLEASE.

(btw they wont respond to us on this blog, because there are too many complaints for them to handle)

  • Well… That was a boring and frustating press conference. :(

    The Good:
    – The new Resistance 2 trailer. The best trailer so far for this game. Awesome.
    – The inFamous trailer. This title is shaping up nicely.
    – The business presentation done within one level of LBP.
    – Some innovative & fresh titles for the PSN : Flower, Fat Princess.
    – The Warhawk and Uncharted spaces within Home.

    The OK:
    – The Video Download Service. I’m not interested in that feature, but some people do. And i understand this is something important from a business perspective.
    – The “God of War 3” teaser. We already knew that a PS3 sequel was coming. So this wasn’t some “groundbreaking news”. And this teaser, in my opinion, wasn’t really interesting.
    – The “Resistance 2” playthrough. I enjoyed very much the first one, his SP campaign and MP part. I’ll buy the 2nd for sure. But the scripted boss battle shown for R2 didn’t do any favor for this title. From a marketing point, with the GeoW2 gameplay demoed 1 day earlier during the MS press conference, this is even worse.

    The Bad:
    – The infomercial for the PS3 hardware by some developpers. Because it’s not convincing ! It would have been better to get Ubisoft on stage demoing a PS3 level of “Prince of Persia” while praising the hardware, EA showing some gameplay from “Dead space”, a teaser of “Bayonetta” from Sega, some new gameplay from “Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm”, etc…
    – The emphasise on “Exclusive”. O_o ! Didn’t you get the memo that yesterday MS stole the biggest exclusive the PS3 had: FF 13 ?
    – The 10 years life cycle for the PS3. With the current situation, don’t you think that’s something now pointless ?
    – The new 80 GB PS3 WITHOUT BC to come for 399$. As if Sony didn’t see the tremendous demand for all the 80 GB pack with BC ! Very bad business decision here. :(
    – So much talk about the multimedia features of the PS3. So few about what really matters : GAMES. And features for GAMERS. And that’s NONSENSE. Because it’s games that FIRST will drive people towards a console and then let them enjoy all of its multimedia features.
    – Exclusive content for the PS3 version of Bioshock. This could have been great if the rumors were true : a new opening cinematic, 2 more ennemies, 2 new levels that were discared because of lack of time, etc… But, unfortunately, the exclusive DLC we are offered is not really appealing. A ‘grand coup’ has been missed here ! Bad business decision.
    – Focus on pointless / anecdotal features. For exemple, the “weather world stuff” intead of bringing the long-awaited prepaid card for PSN.
    – The lack of diversity. One more multiplayer fps was announced with MAG… Although there’s already TONS of fps : Warhawk, Socom confrontation, Resistance 2, Killzone 2… But no news about “Heavy Rain”, “White Knight Chronicle” or the new project from the Team ICO.
Why don’t you build up a japanese development team only dedicated to RPG and action-RPG ?

    The Sad:
    – The lack of communication : “WipeOut HD” was said to be available for summer but it has disappeared. And no words from anybody from SCE about that. No one to explain what’s going on.
    – I’m under the impression those who are taking the strategic decision about the PS3 live cut off from the gaming world. That they don’t use the feedback from this excellent blog and some famous boards; See how the commnunity react to some decisions, determine what should be the next move, get fresh ideas, improve their strategy, etc…
    – Capcom, Bethesda and Square-Enix were on stage during the MS conference. Worse, many major japanese titles are only available on the X360 (dead rising, ace combat 6, infinite undiscovery, star ocean 4, the last remnant, etc…). Although X360 hardly even exist in Japan. O_o What’s going on ? Are Sony relations with third-party that bad ?
    – Don’t fool yourself, MS is going for the Kill. Don’t mess up ! Otherwise one day, SCEJ employees will go to work only to find empty offices. There will be a business card pinned on the wall saying : “Hi !, this X from MS. It has been a real pleasure competing with you on the console game market. We’ve heard of your recent misfortune from the newspapers. But we would like to let you know that we will heartly welcome any of your future projects on Xbox 720 when you’ll feel ready. MS”
MS will then achieve another monopoly: first on OS, then PC games and perhaps console games. 180$ for a 120GB hard drive. 80$ for WiFi. Yeah, the big deal ! :((

  • i´m really excited with the posibility of a Latino América PSN, i´m from Argentina, here there are a LOT of PS fans.
    thanks!!!

  • Why is the top of Jack’s head cut off for most of the video, part 2 especially. It’s really annoying.

  • Why do ppl *itch all the time about what sony is giving us? Nothing is ever good enough….Appreciate what they are giving us. E3 was great! PSN can now compete with Xbox Live…. Go somewhere else and whine, babies…

  • “12.48 – New Hardware package: the 80 GB Core Pack coming this fall $399 – 40 more GB at that price, plus DualShock 3.”

Does this mean that the PS3 80gb will have a 40gbs stats or will the new 80gb be backwards compatible(most important feature – period). If not then I would rather pay more money and still be able to play my old PS2 games.

  • great news!
I am so excited for PS3 and for Sony as a whole. this is truly the beginning of the mighty era of the PS3.

now XB360 fanboys and MS, taste your slow and painful defeat..
