12.51 – Developers from Treyarch, EA Tiburon, Ubisoft, Bethesda, 2K Marin, and Lucas Arts are shown on video talking about how much more they’ve learned about programming for the PS3, and how that’s going to pay off in games like Far Cry 2, The Force Unleashed, Prince of Persia, Call of Duty World at War, Madden NFL 09, and Fallout 3. “We’re just beginning to scratch the surface of what PS3 is capable of.”

12.48 – New Hardware package: the 80 GB Core Pack coming this fall $399 – 40 more GB at that price, plus DualShock 3.

12.46 – Lee: “You can stop imagining now.” Video shown featuring lots of DC Legends like Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, the Joker, and more.

12.43 – Mr. Lee is a HUGE MMO fan, been playing since Everquest began… so this is a dream project for him. “Imagine being able to create your own superhero… and help Batman take on the Joker… that’s a cool image.”

12.41 – SOE – Sony Online Entertainment – bringing titles to PlayStation 3. Jim Lee (of comic book fame) on stage now to preview DC Universe online. He’s doing 1-armed push-ups. Don’t hurt your inking hand!

12.35 With an install base of over 35 million worldwide, many more PSP games are on the way. Montage shown, featuring Patapon 2, The Force Unleashed, Super Stardust Portable, Madden 09, LocoRoco 2, NBA 09 The Inside, Lego Batman, and Buzz Master Quiz.

12.31 – On to the PSP – announcing a new PSP Entertainment Pack – in October we’ll launch the Ratchet & Clank Size Matters pack, which includes the PSP-2000, National Treasure 2, a 1GB memory card, and echochrome.

12.30 – Eric demonstrates how to copy movies to the PSP. You can do this either through a PS3, or through the PC Store. BTW, this video download service will be available TONIGHT (applause). We’ll be adding new titles each week.

12.29 – “How long will it take to download an SD movie?” The answer is about an hour for a 2 hour movie. However, with progressive downloading, you can begin watching your video almost instantaneously.

12.25 – Eric Lempel takes the stage (you remember him, right), to show a live demo of the video download service – it’s part of the existing PLAYSTATION Store – there’s a new video tab. Each studio has a page. Eric shows how to buy, rent, or preview a movie.

12.23 – Jack talks about the new video download service. On Day 1 – Sony Pictures, Fox, MGM, Lions Gate, Warner Brothers, Disney, and more will have content available. A huge differentiator – you can take movies and tv on the go via PSP.

sonypresser12

12.19 – Jack Tretton PlayStation Home: “Your patience will be more than rewarded.” We’ve got great publisher support on game-specific spaces. A new video is debuted showing more of what Home’s experience will be all about.

12.17 – Gran Turismo TV introduced – racing video content coming to Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, shows like Top Gear and other original content in Hi Def. Gearheads will definitely be all over this. Lots of international content. Launches August 1st.

12.14 – Jack Tretton: “We’re not interested in filling up our store with games that nobody wants to play, just so we can say ‘we have the most games.'” He follows this up with a trailer showing a number of upcoming PSN games like PixelJunk Eden, Fat Princess, Crash Commando, PAIN Amusement Park, Flower, Ragdoll Kung-Fu and Siren: Blood Curse.

12.11 – 180 million pieces of downloaded content since launch. New stuff coming to the PLAYSTATION Store – Ratchet and Clank Future: Quest for Booty. “Like a summer blockbuster – high quality, less expensive.” Q4B will answer the questions to Clank’s disappearance at the end of RCF: Tools of Destruction. Price will be $14.99.

12.09 – PLAYSTATION Network – we’re instituting a single sign on this fall – online on a PC, a PSP, PS3. Check your friends list on a PC (I think a few of you have asked for that).

12.07 – New PS2 bundle coming this fall – a new Lego Batman Bundle, along with a Justice League movie, for $149.

12.03 – Let’s talk about PS2: More than 130 new titles coming to PS2. Not bad for a 9 year old system.

12.01 – Among the announcements – we’re turning our attentions to Latin America… and a announcement of PS3 Greatest Hits. Huge applause for sackboy, Alex, and LBP!

11.58 – Alex Evans of Media Molecule is out on the stage to help Jack work through the business side of things… more on this later…

sonypresser10

11.56 – Ted has left the stage, Jack Tretton is back out to talk about user generated content. “We’ve seen a glimpse of that future – it’s called LittleBigPlanet.”

11.54 – More, even huger enemies/ships shown in an R2 video. An Idaho location has been mentioned as well. Add that to Chicago, San Francisco, and the California redwood forests.

11.53 – PS video from the Press Conference will be available on PSN, you’ll wanna make sure to see this.

11.51 – Did I mention this thing is huge? Cheers from the audience as the live demo ends.

11.50 – Ted is taking on a 300 foot leviathan (you may have read about this in GamePro) with a rocket launcher. On paper it’s one thing – in full motion, it’s something else entirely…

11.48 – Here’s a look at Resistance 2, Ted Price from Insomniac Games takes the stage.

11.46 – Jack Tretton: “If PlayStation in 2007 was all about hardware, PlayStation in 2008 is all about software.”

11.45 – Jack Tretton: “The PLAYSTATION 3 is the most complete and future-proof Blu-ray player available.”

PlayStation Press Conference

11.41 – OK back in my seat, as CEO Jack Tretton reacquaints us with the history of PlayStation and Sony Computer Entertainment. “We take a longer look ahead.”

The press conference is just about to get started and I’m up on stage playing Metal Gear Solid 4. You might be able to see me as soon as G4 starts their live video stream (look to the left side of the stage).

I’ll keep updating this post with news from the event, so check back often or keep your eyes on our twitter feed for the latest.

  • Oh yea,

    WHERE ARE THE RPG’S.

  • Forgot to mention, Quest for Booty looks great, and has a terrific price point, consider that bought also.

  • @223: i’m in the UK and i’m interested if its the 60gb model. thanks

  • lol that wasn’t water below in the R2 vid, it was fog. Fog hiding no textures down there.

  • the only 2 cool new announcements for PS3 were about two games showed in CG and with no release date.

PSN games looked good too, but they’re not the reason of my purchase and they won’t be a reason to keep it.

all in all this war a horrible conference with boring long talk and no verve or substance.

  • $6 to RENT a HD movie. One word to that, NO.

Oh a side note R2 looked awesome.

  • @131 Nymo

Laughs. good point. you people have lost sight of what this was originally all about, back in the day it wasn’t about competition, it was about havin’ fun and whether you own a ps3, xb, or wii as long as you’re havin’ fun with it doesn’t matter.. if you have a Jaguar, Turbografx, or Commodore Amiga – enjoy it.

  • Seems like a lot of people will never be happy with anything.

I think it was all great, it was much better than Nintendo’s lame ass mini-games and Wii-mote upgrade. MS spent more on making the 360 look more like a WiiS3.

And for those that think that FFXIII was a HUGE deal…get over yourself. I’ve never played a FF game and they don’t interest me in the least. I know plenty of other gamers that feel the same way. Now I do agree that the PS3 needs some more good RPG’s and so far I only see one good one (Fallout 3) coming. I’m sure there will be plenty to come, just not right now, these things need time to develop. You can’t just slap together some pictures and code and call it a game.

  • I was expecting more overall from everyone at E3 this year, but I’ll break down my thoughts here:

Sony – I would say slightly above average overall, you guys probably had the best presentation and the video service is pretty cool, and better than I thought it would be at launch. Nothing really blew me away though. Most of the games shown, we’ve seen before and I don’t particularly like MMO’s, so DC doesn’t interest me. No game-play shown for MAG either, which was a bit disappointing. The LBP presentation tied in with the “business” presentation was awesome though. I can’t wait for LBP!

Microsoft – Aside from the infamous FF XIII announcement, I think they did a pretty terrible job. They are trying too hard to focus on competing with Nintendo. All they really had was Gears 2 and the FF XIII announcement… everything else was pretty lame.

Nintendo – LOL, did they even try? Wow I can’t believe how bad that show was.

Back to Sony in my closing here… thanks for not going too casual guys, I appreciate that. You guys are the only ones who still seem to care about the hardcore audience. Please bring out the big guns with RPG’s at Tokyo Games Show this year to give the RPG fans some confidence!

  • Geeze, more FF complainers on the Blog, Its not like the PS3 isn’t going to get FFXIII. So as far as I can tell that doesn’t ruin the PS3 or E3 for Sony. AND it’s not like the loss of FFXIII as an exclusive will end the PS3 or Sony, it’s one game, and the FF series hasn’t been doing well anyway.

Ratchet and Clank will be sweet and I can’t wait to get MAG, a 256 player battle, AMAZING! inFamous looks sweet and DC Universe wil be just as good.

Oh and to those complaining about RPG’s PS3 has 6 out now with others in development, (check Gamespot).

(To those angry enough to go out and buy a 360 enjoy your Red Rings of Death and having to wait to get your console back when it happens ;)

  • On a side note insomniac and LBP saved the day (well…kinda)

  • 256 PLAYERS?????????? HOLY!!!!!!! IN SOCOM 3 EACH SERVER EACH MANY DIFFERENT GAMES, AND COULD FIT A TOTAL OF 256 PLAYERS IN 1 SERVER FULL OF GAMES,

AND NOW 256 FOR 1 GAME?????!!!!!!!!!! thats taking it to the next, next, next level.
    dam impressive.

  • Meh. Nothing truly new or exciting…we all knew GOW3 was coming. MAG remains to be seen how it will be. Too much PS2 and PSP stuff IMHO. The only real Megaton news was Sony losing Final Fantasy exclusive.

  • Why buy an 80gb with 40gb features when i can just as well buy a 40gb and put in a larger hdd myself? Sounds strange if you ask me.

Would have liked a live demo of some other games apart from resistance.

  • Sony showed more than enough games. Plus other functions. He showed Home as well. Like i said too many trailers. But i am more convinced that PS3 is definitely going to do well. I love Sony and the games look great so does the Video store and Home. Tokyo Game Show is around the corner and i think Sony has a small show of their own as well in the US, plus leipzig showing in Germany. Fall should bring interesting things for us. Love you Sony.

  • @261, ff series always does well, best and biggest gaming franchise in the world, and yes, its a pretty big loss how it goes to the 360, it doesnt deserve to have such a good game.

  • darkos87 | July 15th, 2008 at 1:15 pm

You guys are a bunch of whiny idiots. You got so many new PSN titles, we got killzone 2, resistance 2, motorstorm 2, lbp, infamous etc coming till spring 2009, those are all first party developed, sony is busting his balls to make those games instead of just buying it from the next hoebag in town, and you’re a bunch of ungrateful idiots.

Video Store came as promised, God of War 3 looks awesome, MAG- the concept- looks fantastic, and there are so many new games on PSN I won’t even have money to buy half of them.

Seriously you just whine and whine and whine about anything and everything.

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Friend, this has nothing to do about Sony’s line up being bad, their conference being bad, hell no! I found it the most entertaining and interesting conference of all three. Relaxing, funny, not made and acted like Nintendo did, plus a whole bunch of games and interesting features.

The thing is, Sony Playstation has always provided us with all types of genres, actions, shooters, adventures, RPG on their former PS consoles. You know I have over 60 RPG’s (Japanese / American / European version on original none moderated consoles) on the PS2 (100 games total) and I’m still not done collecting. The PS3 all of the sudden looks like a home for shooters and you may love it so dearly but there a whole bunch of people out there who don’t… like me. Plus I refuse to support M$.

I’m only disappointed about the fact that there’s not a single moment they’ve spend time about a (J)RPG, other then that, the show was great!

For others, the things I’ve seen at Nintendo, we’ve also seen already before and their line up are like 10 times smaller than that of Playstation. But yeah, RPG fans have been let down tonight by the conference. On the bright side, at least Eternal Sonata is definitely coming and Namco wasn’t planning to localize it in the first place.

  • No, sorry, I WILL be informing you, Sony, of just what a pathetic showing this was. Never mind trying to keep my comments off the site.

I suppose this is the answe to the question of whether Sony knew ahead of time about Microsoft stealing exclusivity of FFXIII from them. THEY DIDN’T. If they did, they wouldn’t have thought they could rely on shooters to win E3 for them.

I’m staggered that when they could have been bringing their A game, treating us to reveals of Team Ico, Heavy Rain, and the Rockstar games, titles that would actually have been of interest to people, titles that are long overdue for airing and titles that YOU DO NOT FAIL TO SHOW AT AN EVENT AS IMPORTANT AS E3, they…actually…thought…they…could…rely…on…shooters…

The upside of FFXIII being available on the Xbox is, we’ve got the perfect way to show Sony what we think of their appalling treatment of us Sony fans. Get a copy of FFXII for the Xbox, hell, if you don’t have an Xbox BUY one to play FFXIII on and have it drive some hardware sales to boot. Don’t whatever you do buy it for PS3, after all Sony doesn’t care about having exciting games for the PS3 or about you, so let’s return the favour.

This E3 wasn’t even an epic fail, it was a huge FU to people who want more from the PS3 than boring, generic, mehtastic shooters. Screw them and the horse they rode in on.

  • Get on those RPGs now screw shooters its enough with Resistance and Killzone now move on!

    RPGs!!!

  • Personally I thought it was a great conference and reminds me about why I like the Playstation so much more then the competition. There were at least 30 games I want to play through the whole conference (including PSN games). I do wish there was a little more info on related to when things are actually shipping, but nevertheless VERY solid show. It was so game centered and great, made me really enthusiastic about the future of the PS3.

  • And yeah… we still have TGS… only ow… like… 3 months away (grrrr)

  • @264
    Flanders

    Stupid Flanders

  • @219 decimalator

I chuckle at comments like yours, attempting to paint the 360 and MS in such a bad light while spinning away at making PS3 the best. I can’t figure out why there are so many delusional PS3 fanboys. I know this is a Sony blog and all, but you aren’t doing the company any favors. Luckily, I have a 360 (and a Wii), so I actually have a large variety of games to play. But you enjoy waiting for these shooters.

btw, it won’t kill you to own the 360 and a Wii with a PS3. Maybe having all 3 will help provide a much needed perspective on gaming. All 3 systems have their strengths and weaknesses, it’s just that some other systems are stronger than others… and Sony’s providing enough reason for complaints, thus the so-called ‘whining’.

  • Sounds like everyone missed the bombshell announcement .. 130 new PS2 titles. Yay… ?

    GG Sony , you failed.

  • I’d like to add that I’ve been a sony fan since getting a japanese PSone at launch.

You guys have LOST THE PLOT.

MS claimed they’d sell more 360’s than PS3’s this generation.

    As a Sony fan… I believe them.

  • who cares about ps2

  • I must say, I was disappointed in you Sony. Not a steller conference. But some nice small surprises.

  • @278

    My point entirely.

  • Sorry about above^

You needed to show more software.
-Bioshock, Motorstorm, Killzone 2, and more.

Also, the prices have to be lower on the video download service.

  • @275 epacs…I agree…I’d like more PS3 titles, BUT, how many people on these blogs have been whining they wanted more PS1 and PS2 games…

So, in a way Sony did listen.

  • @275
    epacs

Well it’s broken down like this, we disregarded it because it didn’t effect us, however it’ll effect others who only own a ps2, so.. shutup

  • loved the conference AND the video service is just what I was looking for from Sony. Only thing is, I wish they would offer a monthly fee for rentals like netflix. Hate the nickle and dime sort of deals.

  • i liked your guys show
but i was hoping you guys would introduce some type of new accessory for the PS3. And im talking about something new

  • @swrebel181: The red ring of death is all but in the past moron. That was the first run of 360’s.

All I can say is that Sony’s presser today was . . . OK. They lost an exclusive that I bought the PS3 for. They lost exclusive content for Fallout. Rock Band 2 is exclusive to it’s competitor for 3 months. No Home, no Fable 2. I’m really not impressed. I’ll continue to watch Blu-rays, but I don’t see a single game that I’ll be buying for the PS3 in the foreseeable future. It has nothing that it’s competitor isn’t putting out in a better fashion.

Go ahead all. Bash me for stating my opinion. I’m not blinded by my loyalty to any system. I just DEMAND quality for my money and I’m EXTREMELY disappointed by Sony’s efforts thus far.

  • MaG & Home better come with a free $20 Playstation Network Gift Card darn it!

  • @277…

I think it’s safe to assume that Microsoft will end up selling a lot more 360’s then PS3s. I don’t see how Sony can ever catch up…even if they start outselling them every month it would take a looooong time for Sony to ever catch up. I think it’s safe to say that Microsoft, with their aggressive strategy has won this round.

  • Of Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony press conf. Sony def left me the most satisfied. It had a little bit of everything.

still can’t believe final fantasy XIII is not PS3 exculsive anymore! I’m not even sure why i don’t like that news…

  • We needed more games GAMES not more movies or things that give us more movie features GAMES some of us bought the console for gaming not a glorified movie player.

  • MAG looks so amazing! Wow! How can you pull that off!?

  • Just a thought on the New $399 80GB PS3s: if people know that they can get 40 extra GBs and a Dualshock 3 for the same price as the 40GB version, what is the inscentive to buy the 40GB version? I predict that they will lower the price of the remaining 40GB inventory to $349 until they are gone.

  • @278
    Deathsknight001

    ps2 fans and owners

  • I stopped watching G4TV but did today for the Live Sony coverage. Well nothings changed there has it? Have they seen themselves on TV? They are so biased against the PS3 it’s a joke. It’s so sad to see them trying to find the littlest things to make Sony look bad.

    I thought it was a great show…

FF ohh well never played them before lol…

  • Sorry but right now I feel like crying. Sony please get serious at TGS.

  • So what was sony’s answer to the FF XIII lost exclusivity? 80Gb replacing 40GB? hooray -_-

i waited for this conference to finalize my decision on whether or not to sell my 60gb ps3, i am now convinced of doing so. I’ll get a 360 this afternoon, and purchase a ps3 on God of War 3’s release.

  • Oh and Trophies for PSP plz.

you know, to go with the whole one sign-in dilly.

  • @284 MUSTAPHADAMUS

    i agree
we need some sort of monthly fee or an annual fee with the movie download
you know pay 50 bucks a year and unlimited movie download or something. I think one of the many reason is that sony might want to make up for loss money i think.

  • the show was amazing.. i have to say that im glad that sony and google are teaming up.. i mean youtube on the ps3 …wow

  • @292
    davivman

that’s a sound prediction, I’m curious to see too
