PixelJunk Eden: Trophies Galore!

218 13

UPDATE: Hey, folks. Thanks for all the comments. It’s always great to get feedback straight from the fans. I just wanted to give you a short update on Eden.

First of all, be sure to check out the demo when it hits the PLAYSTATION Store tomorrow. Just a hint – if you explore the “main menu” you’ll find access to more than one demo stage. Also, to give you an idea of how cool the YouTube recording function works, here are a couple of videos taken by someone at Sony today.

This first one shows single player on an early stage.

This second one shows some 2-player action on a later stage, although the
demo and the full game feature multiplayer for up to 3 people.

Don’t forget to download the demo tomorrow!

Hello, this is Dylan from Q-Games (the Cuthbert one, not the Warhawk Jobe one – when did all these Dylans suddenly start turning up eh?).

We’ve just wrapped up PixelJunk Eden, and it has been an incredibly interesting project from start to finish. We started off by getting an intern programmer from France to try and implement Baiyon’s out-of-this-world foliage designs, and he did a good job with the help of one of our tech guys, and managed to replicate the look. So after he went back to France, we assigned a proper team and went gung-ho into development. That was around December last year. Back then all it had were plants. There was no player character or any real idea for what the game would become, but over the new year I had some sparks of inspiration and that’s when things really started getting moving, leading to the demo video we played at GDC ’08.

Anyway, this all leads into trophies somehow. Ah yes, because our development cycle is so short, we find ourselves being able to implement all the latest OS-supported features before anyone else can. For PixelJunk Monsters it was Dual-Shock 3 support, but this time there have been a couple of really cool new features and we have put both in. These are the Trophy support and the YouTube video upload support. Both of which are really cool.

Initially we implemented all our own trophy screens etc., but then Sony Computer Entertainment built it all into the OS, which really helped us out. The trophy comparing and your “gamer card” screen really up the ante for those hard core gamers out there. In fact, it might make some of the non-gamer types even turn hard-core as chasing trophies can be rather addicting.

PixelJunk Eden is a short-form PSN title so there are fewer trophies when compared to, say, a Blu-ray title (which can have the esteemed platinum trophy), but we still managed to pack in quite a few. To begin with, you can get a bronze trophy for opening every “seed” in a stage. This is quite a challenge on some of the stages as the gardens are large and expansive. Then there are trophies for a load of other things, such as destroying 500 of the “prowlers,” or collecting 15 “crystals” in one jump. My personal favorite is a trophy that you can only achieve in 3P mode, where you have to “volley” a player between you back and forth five times without him/her landing on a plant, a bit like tennis.

The YouTube upload feature is going to revolutionize how people share tips. Up until now it has been limited to people with video capture equipment, but from now on, anyone can record their game and upload it directly to YouTube from within the game! It is as simple as pushing one button to start and one button to stop and upload, and there is no affect on the gameplay thanks to the power of the PS3 and its abundance of SPU processors.

For more info on the YouTube API and PixelJunk Eden and to see it in action, take a look at the YouTube API Blog.

Oh, and we have been totally inundated with requests for trophies in PixelJunk Monsters via some kind of patch. As this goes to press, I can say we are definitely looking into it – you just need to badger Deborah Mars and her team in Santa Monica to get some dates set. If we release a patch, we will not only implement this but we will also implement XMB music and a couple of other things.

One final note about Eden, I really can’t emphasize enough how much pure fun this game is, and I’m saying this as a gamer, not as the developer of the game! My mail box has been overflowing with direct mails full of the same kind of comments from online review sites who have preview copies and I have never had that before, so we must be onto something (fingers crossed)!

  • Oh this is is great.
I don’t understand PJ Eden yet, but I’m sure I’ll get it after playing the demo tomorrow!

By the way, are you guys taking in consideration of releasing it on Blu-Ray? Not like a single game, like PJ Racers, PJM, PJ Eden for $40… Or whatever? That would be great!

  • I might just need to buy this if just for all the all the PS3 funtionality built into it… amazing!

I hope we get trophies in PJM!

@ 49- I am thinking the same thing!
(I hope SCEA would release the PSN pre-paid cards to US already!)

Releasing it on Blu-Ray would be awesome. Its like a PixelJunk Collection. Not like a single game, like PJ Racers, PJM, PJ Eden for $40… Or whatever? That would be great!

  • @TheHater
Hopefully you can find some of the fabled “Playstation Network Cards”. Then you could go to a Wal-Mart and not have to worry about a credit card.

  • Very much looking forward to Eden.

About your next project, Pixeljunk Dungeons. Saw a photo in Famitsu a couple of months ago. Showed a few rooms with pools of water filling them up.

The name made me think it was a rpg like title of some kind but the photo made it seem more like a management game (dealing with the water).

Any words about that project? Cheers.

I think their reasoning behind this is, to have a networked account record of trophy earnings, in order to generate a currency for Home or some other type of media/content, I could be wrong, I could be blowing a whistle on ‘them’ or ‘myself’ idunno’, but It seems to me that it’s reasonable for Warhawk and Uncharted, Burnout, etc. to be among the first to offer a platinum. SSHD has 17 trophies two of which are gold, and the hardest one to get is one of the silvers, there is a lot of balancing research going into the testing process of trophies, Trophy values need to be alloted accordingly, for this reason I wonder why a ‘game’ of more ‘value'(revenue) is worth more in ‘trophy’ value, and so come to my conclusion that gamers will be able to generate some form of virtual currency off of Trophies, of course without actually losing the trophies and whatnot, I’m guessing they’ll be tied to the PSN user name, as would the currency related records?

This is all a big tangent filled theory.
Something we gamers do best, no?

  • Custom soundtrack support? Please!

  • Looking forward to a new game with trophies. Thanks

  • Will there be a website that lists all of the trophies?

    Thanks for the info.

  • @Kedaro

Maybe you’re right, but as hard as we worked for some of the trophies in SSHD, we deserve a platinum like any other game. This is the first time I hear of no platinum in SSHD and it kind of disappoints me. I do agree that trophies will be some kind of “currency” in HOME. And yes, we sure do theorize alot! Just look at the update threads in the forums for some real good theories.

  • Hope you guys have in-game music for this title. This is a day 1 download for me.

  • @ftwrthtx

If it’s like SSHD demo/game (which it should be) u can go to your trophy collection. By clicking on the game u will see all the possible trophies and what is necessary to obtain them.

  • Ummm, did someone say Trophy support?

Day one purchase for me! Sorry Soul Caliber IV but this title has Trophy support.

Does this title support Custom In-game music?

  • This has been a day one buy for me ever since I saw the video for it. With all honesty, you guys are really making the pixeljunk series a mainstay for me. Keep making games and I’ll keep buying them.

Ps. giving pixeljunk monsters trophy and in game music support is by far the coolest thing ever.

    I wuv you guys :)

  • Youtube update suport ????? w0000000, c00l, just give me PSN carsd !!!!!!!!!

  • The demo and the game have to come out right when my PS3 breaks. D=

  • Can’t wait to get this

  • Ah, my dear friend, Dylan. You always bring such nice gifts. And here I came unprepared with a gift of any sort. Tell you what, I’ll buy the game and we’ll call it even, ‘kay? :D

  • Wait wait where did anyone say something about youtube uploading support? Someone please show me this.

  • NVM i just clicked “more”

    oh my god..

  • I think i will just get this game for the new stuff :) How much?

  • @ Ghostm

If it doesn’t support in-game music, I’m almost 100% sure it will at some point, like he said, they are among the first groups of people that use the new FW features, I know Pixeljunk Monsters is slated for in-game music, and I think Trophies too, anyway I’ve spent enough of my day off here, I think I’m going to go play Burnout(has in-game music for those that don’t already know) which is receiving a retroactive trophy update sometime in the near future, because the save files are tied to your PSN user account name, can’t be faked/copied, and is also only $39.99 now for those that haven’t picked it up yet.

  • man, There is just too much to look forward to with this title, but there’s one thing I’m a bit concerned about:

WILL THIS BE THE LAST WE’LL SEE FROM Q-GAMES/THE PIXELJUNK BRAND?

I though PixelJunk was supposed to be a 3-game series, and if that’s true, I and many many others wants to see more!

but, If this truly is the end, I’m positive that you guys are ending it with a bang!

    Keep it up!

  • Hi Dylan,
Just wanted to say what a great job you guys have been doing. This doesnt’ really relate to Eden, but I think you need to do another 1up RSVP show.You,J.Mak and Gabe were great to listen to…

    Thanks for Eden!

  • Hey PJ-Team,

first off; I love you. =D Bought Monsters and it is awesome. Trophies would make the experience even better.
I am sure Eden will be amazing as well and I am willing to buy this game. Is 31st of July also the date for Europe? Cause I’m from Germany.

    Best regards.

  • Yeah exactly what the other guy said. KEEP MAKING GAMES. Don’t let this be the last title we see from you guys on PSN. If not for us, think of the money :(

  • Sounds like it’s going to be a game that people are going to love, since everyone is wanting trophies now.

  • Can’t wait. Self proclaimed trophy junkie.

  • awww yea nice im buying this the second its on the store…..wait a min i live in europe damn i have to wait til 2067 before its on the eu store

anyway the second last part there caught my eye, pjm…patch…trophies….xmb music…other things can a sentience be any more exciting to a ps3 owner who is mad for trophies?
anyway does this mean pjm is getting trophies? can you say if there will be double the amount of trophies if i own pjm encore since its like a second game?

  • Another great project from PixelJunk; but here’s the beef: Why is that bright white logo still in the middle of the screen? (or even a dim one for that matter)

Cmon QGames, show a little support for your fanbase. There are more than a few plasma screen owners out there that have been complaining about burn in. Enough of them in fact that “Encore” for Monsters included a “burn in” modification.

Not that it did much (dimming will only delay the same burn in effect), but at least it was recognition that there is an obvious design flaw.

  • You got my money DAY 1.

  • This game looks very creative and alot of fun. I hope they allow for custom soundtracks though. Then again, all my metal won’t necessarily combine well with the game it seems. Oh well, I wouldn’t mind lol.

It’s nice to get news from the devs and I’m happy we got some today. Expect my support for this game, cause it looks awesome.

  • Custom music and trophies for Monsters sounds great. But how do we contact Deborah Mars? The link on her name just sends you to her old posts which she probably doesn’t check anymore.

And what exactly are we badgering her for? Just dates, or the go-ahead for the patch all together? If she isn’t badgered enough, will the patch not happen?

  • Wow. I like all the features. The only one not noted is custom soundtracks. I’m buying this game probably no matter what but I hope you guys allow/enable custom soundtracks. I’m looking forward to the demo and the game. :)

    Sorry for being confused…

  • And sorry for the double post. I didn’t think the first one went through since it took me to an error page.

  • @83

If I’m not mistaken, the music interacts with the game, i.e. everyday shooter.

If that’s true, custom music just wouldn’t work.

    But I could be wrong.

  • Can’t wait!!!!!!!

  • This game was so much fun to play. I can’t wait to get the trophies

  • Cant wait to see the next

  • Awesome we need more games that support remote play, definite value. It is a shame internet service is not more prevalent than it is in households. Sony and video game developers sure are laying the ground work.

  • Dylan, Thanks so much for coming on and giving us the scoop on your new game. The game looks awesome. You are really pushing the media into new wonderful directions. You guys and the guys at thatgamecompany have quickly become favorites of mine. This game is a definite day one purchase for me.

  • Online multiplayer support? In the demo?

  • Q Games is probably my favorite small developer ever. >:3

  • Okay 2 things.

1 — Is PixelJunk Eden coming out in Australia next week? if so thats awsome.

2 — thanks for considering patching PixelJunk Monsters with trophy support and custom soundtracks -> perhaps you guys could add a few additional levels as well and release the patch as an expansion ?

  • Deborah Mars please add trophies to PixelJunk Monsters! Please!

  • Cool. Nice Job guys(girls), looking forward too seeing this put up.

  • Verdict…

Games without Trophies will now & forever be known as 3/4 of a game…

    Trophies are just ‘that’ addictive.

  • The Youtube feature is sick

  • Thanks you for supporting remote play on the PSP. I wish more developers would do that.
