Comic-Con Live Demo: DC Universe Online

Jeff Rubenstein's Avatar + Posted by Jeff Rubenstein on Jul 25, 2008 // Sr. Social Media Manager

During recent E3 and Comic-Con Blog posts, viewers like you have been asking for more info about Sony Online Entertainment’s DC Universe Online. So yesterday, I fought through the throngs of people to SOE’s booth, where I mic’d up Creative Director Jens Andersen, and had him give you the same walkthrough you’d get if you were standing right there.

It was a bit loud in the hall, so apologies for that.

Feel free to post questions below, but since the SOE team is still in San Diego, don’t look for them to jump in with answers quite yet. As Jens states in the video, we’ll have more on DCUO here on the blog – and I’ll make sure that the team sees your questions.

If you’re planning on attending Comic-Con between now and Sunday, feel free to go drop by the SOE booth (#4319) to go hands on with DCUO.

The whole idea seems really cool but the environment, cars looks really flat. The animation is a little stiff, almost like some amateur’s work. I hope this is not close to come out of the oven just yet. It has great potential but it needs to be tweaked and fine tuned.

Oh yeah. Marvel might of been a much better look then DC comics. That’s just my taste. =}

Yea the concept and execution seems great, but the graphics are looking a little dated, ie. Everquest came to mind, with some small flairs from EQ2, It has to be at least as visually impressive as FFXI, that game has been out for over 4 years now. Maybe 5 idunno. I don’t mean any disrespect, just telling it how I see it at the moment, I know it’s still a work in progress.

Will there be cross-platform play between the PS3 and PC?

@People referring to the graphics:
Yes the graphics need improvement but I am much more satisfied with the way they are working on the gameplay over graphics. After all, we’re PS3 owners, not 360 owners. Graphics can be spiffed up later. Also note a flash video doesn’t do anything justice.

game looks good. buyin this no matter what. never really into comics. but batman always was one of my favorites. liked how he never had any real powers. just a normal human(kinda). also liked punisher for same reason but i think he is with marvel.

Hey Guys!!!
First off DCU looks amazing!! Im a HUGE fan of MMO’s and superheros so this game is going to consume ALOT of my time.

But i have a question….

Can i have a job?!?!?!!!
Im now working only 3 blocks from your Bellevue office. Just off northup way on 127th at Pacific top soil. So if you need some fine bark or ceder play chips i can hook ya up LOL.

But im a huge gamer and the biggest Playstation fanboy of all time. And just moved here from Mn with the hopes of getting a entry level game testing job.
At this point im willing to work for almost anyone(NOT MS!)just to get into the biz. But ive been dreaming of working for Sony since 1994 when i sold my car to my dad so i could buy a psone(i was 14 and Battle Arena toshinden blew my frigin mind! lol).

So if you can do anything at all to help me get my foot in the door. I will be forever in your debt. Thank you

Comic-con was more exciting than E3 this year that is sad. After watching it on G4 i really must make try and go next year. E3 was once the mecca of video gaming entertainment buzz, and it needs to go back to its roots and leave the booth babes alone. It’s a show so it can be well managed without chaos. The ESA needs to lighten up.I remember when i use to really look forward to E3 now i look more forward to watching Comi-con. Sony represented well, DC Universe Online looks amazing. I would like to see Home and trohies being apart of it.

Hey guys, you are doing great so far and as much as i didnt want to get my hopes up… i am already way too invested in the potential of this project.

A couple questions/comments

1. are there other types of super movement? (i.e what happens to the darknight and green arrow types. (any hopefore the bat-pod (-cycle, -mobile, – jet, etc). Is there any chance of a gatling gun/hook

2. I love your depictions of metropolis and Gotham- its obvious that these iconic city/locations would be among your first priorities. But i hope they arent the only ones you include (i.e sub diego, keystone, central city (with flash museum) smallville, star city, belle reeve, gorilla city, to name a few)

3.different flying animations (from simple pose and posture changes to more elaborate ones like the red tornado

4. if theres voice acting for created characters, please include a plethora of voice options or pitch modification (e.g metal gear online)

5. a way to leave a calling card.. or tag the city with your heroic/villanous exploits (batsymbol/joker playing card)

6.henchmen for villains

7.sometimes being a villain should be about pulling the heist and making the escape.. not always trying to brawl the superhero into submission. how about mission types that encourage a small skirmish with the hero, but ultimately create better incentives for delaying the hero with your henchmen, or some distraction (like throwing a bus full of nuns of a bridge) while you slink back to your base/safe zone.

8. Riddler types using mind over matter

9. can you become the nemesis of a specific created hero

10. even though he hates it, batman sometimes lets superman carry him. any chance of that? or can we use our ring powers to enable group flight

11. ultra rare loot drop: kryptonite, mother box, anti life eq, etc

12.Massive world event: battle of metropolis.. spearheaded by an invincible doomsday.

13. APACHE CHIEF GROW!

This looks really cool.

A big curiousity of mine though is, will there be the option to use mouse and keyboard on the PS3.

I’ve always thought since those options were available to the PS3 for some things, that it could open up some interesting avenues as far as having MMORPGs.

Everyone needs to remember that this is a fantasy comic game so the realism in the environment should favor the look of the comic books. With Jim Lee behind this, this is exactly what he is shooting for.

I’ll admit, while I do know most of the important characters from the DC Universe, I’ve never really been a huge fan. That being said, I like what I see so far.

Hopefully many people get into this. I want to hear more about pricing, though.

So this also playable cross platform and will it have Xfire support? :)

I am definitely purchasing this game. Will there be a “secret identity” for heroes? I think it would be cool to see Clark Kent and not just Superman. I also think it would be a cool “mini-game” to have to protect the secret identity of the character you build.

The game looks pretty neat. I’m really liking the visual style, reminds me of Crackdown, where there’s plenty of realism, yet this is all enhanced by a comic-book “filter”.

I look forward to more news and being a villain.

Oh, and one quick question, if you have the time to answer:

-Will we see comic cross-over missions, such as Mr. Freeze and Braniac teaming up with players to kill The Flash?

I’m so freakin happy. Since MMOs became popular I’ve been aching for one with a more action-based combat and not something with auto attack, a game that’s more skill based as well as one where you can interact more with the environment.

Looks like this is all of that PLUS batman included. :D

+ crystalx3d on July 26th, 2008 at 10:17 pm said:

I’m super excited about an MMO on a console. I hope this is just one of many on the way, as I’m not much into these superhero games. I do wish that someone would make an MMO that’s specifically for the PS3 instead of a PS3/PC combo. Mainly because the way you play a game with a keyboard and mouse is completely different than the way you would play with a controller. Either that or make it PC compatible only if you play with a usb controller. Perhaps it’s not so big of a deal with this game and its action-based gameplay. It would be nice though to see some great PS3-only MMORPGs in the future with some deep gameplay tailored specifically for the PS3 instead of a PC MMO experience with a six-axis control scheme slapped on top of it.

The game looks fantastic and I love the instant battle mechanics. I’m getting more and more excited the more I see this game.

I have one minor gripe… I don’t like how the cars blow up and no debri remain after the particle effects. Why didn’t they make it so that they leave a darkened model of an exploded car then have it fade out over time?

+ Gunwing on July 28th, 2008 at 11:11 am said:

Yeah this looks like a good MMO! I just hope the animations are better when the game releases as right now they look vary jerky. But eh thats my only nit pick right now. I love that even players can be turned into objects and used as weapons in the game world, and that it will have many locations from DC comics!

Thanks for posting this guys. I went from thinking the game looked terrible to really looking forward to it. The E3 footage for one reason or other did the game a disservice unlike this game demonstration. I’m glad a real MMO will be coming to a console soon.
