Firmware (v2.42) Now Available

Eric Lempel's Avatar Posted by on Jul 29, 2008 // SVP, PlayStation Network

Just wanted to give everyone a quick heads up that a PS3 firmware update (v2.42) is now available for download. This update improves the playback quality of some PLAYSTATION 3 and PlayStation format software.

The people having the most trouble downloading the update are WEST COAST IN THE US.

Mainly California, i think this is too big of a coincidence considering cali had an earth quake today.

The earth quake must have messed up the servers and other things, like phone lines and all that stuff.

Sucks for people in the west coast.

Probably an error with the US server, mine downloaded in top speed and installed just fine (EU PS3, so most likely EU server?), so its not like its a worldwide problem.

I hope my personal tiny problem is solved. When a few messages were in my mailbox, my mailbox kind of flipped out with showing messages in the wrong profiles and profiles showing new sent messages (small envelope left top), while there weren’t any. I had to keep on remove everything to make it clear.

Dunno haven’t checked it out yet, right from the start?

For some reason, after i installed this new updated, my Call of Duty 4 graphics are all blurred n stuff. The text is harder to read and whatnot. Any idea why?

I mean does your game freeze as soon as you’ve loaded the game and play for a bit?

this happens every time because of their servers, I got the download before the rush so YOU don’t have any idea what you’re talking about, I restarted the system after the download “could not connect” restarted again and it was fine. just cause I made a just about remote server being three words doesn’t mean everything I’ve posted has lost credibility. please trash your ps3, we psychologically stable gamers don’t want your type around here anyways flooding this place with your childish complaints. (that’s what happens when your parents hand you everything)

hehehe nice ninja update drop..

i love hearing people freak out on this blog..granted sometimes i’m one of them..

it’s 1:37 am here and the update installed fast and everything seemed fine until i loaded up Oblivion and it constantly freezes, maybe someone can look into that!

Frito’s Firmware update wishlist

1) allow us to turn off the option to see when people on our friends list go offline and back online all the time, it’s so annoying having it pop up over movies i’m watching repeatedly!!

2) Make in game soundtracks mandatory for all new games!

2a) Then allow streaming music fromour computers and music form usb flash drives to play as custom soundtracks! that would be awesome! (it can save HD space)

3)MORE MUSIC VISUALIZATIONS! It’s time for some new ones!

And is it possible to be able to manipulate the visualizations like on the 360? I know we can change effects with the analog sticks, but it would be neat to be able to rotate and zoom in/out, change color, etc. etc…

and it would be GREAT to have the option to leave it on one setting of visualization instead of having it eventually phase to the next effect..

4)Fix the Backwards compatibility with the 60 gig launch unit! aloty of games still look horrible! (Final Fantasy 12)

5)fix the stop-motion animation “snapshot” function in EyeCreate software to allow smaller bits of time, instead of having to manually cut EACH and EVERY little frame, it takes an average of 1000+ for a 5 minute movie!

6)Bring Play TV to the US!

7)Lower the price of rentals at the movie section, or extend the viewing time/limits…it’s embarassing!

just trying to help make the PS3 the best it can be!

thanks for listening!

Attention Eric Lempel or anyone else whom it may concern, these downloads are taking too long. I’ve been waiting to play my games for 20 minutes and I’m only at 11% of the update download progress. My connection is 6MB download speed through cable,so it’s not my connection that’s the problem. Can you do something about this please? Get some more servers or have some places mirror the file or something. It’s 11:30 PM Pacific Time on July 29,2008 where I live.

I would have to agree with other commenter’s that a list of fixes or changes with a new update would be appreciated. I want to know specifically what I get for waiting so long for the update to install.I don’t want to hope that one of my games is one that was “improved”. I’ve never noticed any changes to any of my games from similiar past updates.

Please fix the following:

*Battery Life Indicator of Controller obscuring the clock for a second when bringing up the XMB specifically to know what time it is.Maybe you could just move either indicator into a different spot in the corner so they don’t overlap?

*Please,Please,Please give us a SLEEP FUNCTION for our PS3’s. Sometimes I fall asleep with the PS3 on while watching movies, and I would love to have a function to set the PS3 to automatically shut off after a custom time period in increments of 1 minute up to 24 hours. That would help my electricity bills immensely not to mention make the PS3 that much more environmentally friendly.

Thanks for your consideration.

It is now 11:52 PM, and my update progress is at a whopping 19% after starting it at a little before 11 PM. I want to play my games now please. :-(

Is closed captioning supported yet?

My Mac can play DVDs that have embedded closed captioning in the video stream. I was going to buy a PS3 but now I can’t play my old DVDs because I don’t hear well. Millions of baby boomer customers. Millions of hearing impaired people. Makes economic sense to pursue putting this capability into the PS3. Thanks for your time and consideration.

+ nvmisfit on July 30th, 2008 at 12:01 am said:

It’s been well over an hour and my download progress for the update is at 21%! I have a 6MB download speed through Cox cable (their second highest speed available) so this is obviously a server issue with Playstation. Why do these downloads take so damn long? I was all set to play some games before going to sleep and now my night is ruined because of this! Thanks a lot Playstation network!

Please give us a sleep function for our PS3’s. I want to be able to set my PS3 to turn off automatically if it is idle (no browsing of the XMB or network communications like downloading) for a period of time that is custom set. I would also like to set a time in increments of 1 minute up to 24 hours in which the PS3 shuts off so I don’t have to worry about falling asleep while watching a movie and having my PS3 stay on all night when I’m not using it.

ok kedaro, you think that because several people in different areas of the world are having trouble connecting to the server it’s an ISP problem?! i live in michigan, i had temporary troubles, west coast had troubles, it obviously isnt the isp, it’s not local systems so what remains is the sony servers and available available bandwidth issues

*) Allow us to have a timed shut off for our controllers that we can set, like after 5 min, 10, 20 etc. etc. after no controller activity

*) allow our online profiles to be more detailed, so friends can see what games we own so we can better invite people, what type of music /movies we like etc. etc.!

Small tiny improvement here, profile views are running faster, but that’s it for me. Mailbox is still flipping. @Ghostm #161

Don’t ever assum any update is “safe”. I’ve never read it in full, but I’m sure that Sony doesn’t guarantee that the software updates will not damage your system in some way in the update terms of agreement’s fine print. Just make sure you backup your hard drive to an external one (or at least all your game saves to a USB drive or something) before you update or you might just be sorry. My first system bricked when I tried to update it. I learned my lesson the hard way. All these updates agitate me whenever one comes out, because I’m always dreading that next bricked system. Especially as my 1-Year warranty comes closer to expiring. Not to mention I have a 60GB version, which I would really miss having. I like being able to play any of my PS2 games in clear progressive scan. Hopefully Sony still has a stockpile of 60GB PS3’s for replacement of defective systems, but I doubt it.

Well I have this problem for a couple of weeks, since the 2.41fw update but I thought: Oh well, most likely it will be fixed with the next update. If this is a bug which more people experience I hope Sony will fix it.

the warhawk servers are hosted from a cluster of ps3s I wonder if the update server is as well. If so, this isn’t an optimal method for hosting important files IMO

I’d love to see some sort of shared game saves, ala Apple’s .Mac. I have multiple PS3 consoles and it’s a pain having to break out a USB stick to transfer saves back and forth. I’d love it if there was a way to backup saves to PSN with a 100MB shared storage, and then be able to download them from another PS3. Granted, it would have to be keyed to a particular PSN user so that you can’t share save data, etc.

I’d also love to do away with copy protected game saves. Yeah, it *might* prevent hacking/cheating, but for the rest of us it is a pain. I cannot upgrade my son’s PS3’s hard drive without completely wiping out his Rainbow 6 Vegas 2 save data, and he’s running out of space to the point that we have to start deleting game data from games he doesn’t play as often. Then we have to do game installs when he decides to go back and play them.

Anxious to see whether 2.42 causes my PS3 to blowup…. :-)

Thanks Eric!

Can you guy please put a timer on the DS3 controllers? Maybe after 15-30min of non usage they should turn off automatically?

Does anybody here know if Soul Calibur IV support voice chat on the PS3?

though I’ve experienced two issues with the friends list. The first is when I add a friend from triangle menu, the invitation remains and i have to again select “add friend” and it gives me a “friend already added” dialogue. and another was pretty much that same issue where I went into the gamercard of the added friend and the invitation was still there.

Holy crap!, why you taking a chunk outta’ me dude, all I said to you, was remote server is three words, just kidding around, why’d you blow it out of proportion, and btw, it is more than likely an ISP problem, I would suspect it is not Sony’s fault people are taking forever, when did I ever attack you dude, geez, hostile or what?

you watch me argue with that other dork, and now I’m a bad guy, wow, I guess I’ll just keep my mouth shut then.

If you read back you’ll see a post by a total jackass insulting Sony about their servers etc etc… and then another with basically the same childish post, but a different username, those are the kind of people I’m talking about, not the people with a legitimate complaint, also yes there was an Earthquake this morning on the West Coast, we even felt a bit of it up here in lower Western Canada apparantly, so maybe that is to blame, but then again, that’s a city, and ISP issue, not like Sony can ship out a hundred repair dudes to sess out California’s phone lines etc… get me?

That is not Sony’s responsibility.

@Ghostm, ah you too? Then it must be a general bug, I hope Sony reads all this and will fix it with the next update. I even have sent messages ending up in other people’s profiles. The thing is I have to remove posts I’ve read and sent, as soon as possible before my friends profile list is going all crazy with showing message envelopes.

@Thetruefiziks, same happened to me. Or get the message, request has already been canceled when I add a friend and tadaa, friend is in my list.
