Paradise City Choppers, Burnout’s Bikes

Jeremy Chubb's Avatar + Posted by Jeremy Chubb on Aug 05, 2008 // Community Manager, Criterion Games

It’s the big one.

A huge week here at Criterion Games. We’re just adding the finishing touches to the Burnout Paradise Bikes Pack and wanted to reveal a little about what’s coming.

Bike_social copy

For the first time ever in a Burnout game, you’ll be able to ride motorcycles.

It’s a huge step for us here on the Burnout team, but this year’s all about changing Burnout in a BIG way through continued support. In July, we brought you our Cagney Feature Pack and introduced 3 awesome online game modes, two great cars, a live news page and calendar, 70 all-new timed multi-part challenges, a complete overhaul of our Online Racing System and a stack of other major improvements. In early September, we’re breaking out the big guns.

Here’s what Burnout Paradise players can look forward to, when they get the FREE Burnout Paradise Bikes Pack next month. (This is the pack formerly know by the codename “Davis”.)

We’ve got two rides ready to go – Day 1. Just head for your nearest junkyard in Paradise City to pick up the FV1100 street bike and the stunning Japanese Firehawk racing bike. That’ll do for a start, but there’s more in store once you’ve played a little way through the bike-specific gameplay. We’ll bring you more on these vehicles in a future post.

From the second we added the first prototype bike, we wanted to cruise the streets of Paradise City at night. So, in addition to the bikes, we’re adding night to the game. You’ll see day cycle through to night and see the city change with it. Paradise City takes on a life of its own once the rush hour traffic thins out!

Burnout: Bike at night

During the day, you can play a variation of our Burning Routes challenges. Beat the target times on specific routes to complete “Burning Rides”. The big change here is that these routes feature multiple checkpoints – they’ll take you all over the city. At night, complete a different set of routes – the “Midnight Rides”.

If you’re used to seeing Paradise City swathed in blazing sunshine, you’re in for a surprise. We’ve also introduced a dynamic weather system to change the feel of the city – another Burnout first.

Burnout: Bike in weather

And that’s not all.

We’ve created 70 challenges specially for bikes. 35 of these are timed, multi-part challenges – the kind you’ll have experienced if you’ve been playing last month’s FREE software update codenamed Cagney.

We said we’d support Burnout fans 100% this year. We’re passionate about doing just that. The most radical changes to Burnout since we began the series are coming this year. Support for a game through DLC has never been this good. For more detail, hit www.criteriongames.com and for a great look at how we’re working check us out on Crash TV – our video podcast.

Burnout Paradise. Always changing.

I love how much you’re supporting this game!

It’s always good to see a developer that actually cares about its players/fans and wants to give them a great ongoing experience.

Thanks you!

Free? That’s insane. It’s pretty much a whole new game.

Criterion Games is certainly winning over people that EA lost.
You give us all restored faith in this whole DLC thing. It doesn’t ALWAYS have to cost fans extra. We need more companies with your business ethics.

I’m sure everyone will keep an eye out for your future games as well.

@ Mr. Jeremy Chubb: Your firm and EA are truly a shining model for how other game developers & their publishers should support their games. I’m not a big fan of the Burnout Paradise demo – but now that you’re introducing motorcycles & night driving – I’ll give it a shot. A final note, Midway & Epic should be ashamed at how terrible a job they do supporting their games on the PS3 – especially when compared to the terrific way that EA & Criterion support theirs.

I know that this is completely off topic like most of my posts lol, but to me it seems that it would make more sense if sony dropped the price of the 40 gig model to $349 instead of taking the b/c out of the 80gig and making it $399. Or IMO they should just do both

I know others have said it numerous times in this blog post, but it’s worth repeating: Criterion has truly provided some AWESOME post-production support for this game! Although Burnout Paradise was perfectly fine back when it was released in January, it’s becoming better and better with each subsequent update. This is just one reason why I’ve been encouraging all of my friends to purchase this game.

Criterion, you guys are the best. You give me hope in an industry that seems saturated with micro-management and costly add-ons. You are a developer that leads by example and shows that this industry still has heart and soul. Your creativity and the quality you guys put into your games really shows how much you care about what you do and it shines through all the other BS from other developers. It shows you still care about the people who play your games and I appreciate that, and I know many others do as well. Please keep up the great work and continue to be one of the most respectable developers out there.

When I first bought this game I wasn’t too impressed with it. So for a few months it sat on the shelf never being played. But when I found out about all these updates they’ve really improved the game and it is a lot more fun than it use to be. And with even more exiting new updates coming, this games going to be a blast. With a new update to include bikes and a new island possibly just shows how much work and improvement you guys have done for us.

I have to say that every part of the game has exceeded my expectations and the amount of support that has been provided by the guys at Criterion has been amazing and is about to get even better. I think the rest of the industry could really benefit from you guys. Thank you.

Cagney update made me start the game all over from the start till I got class A license. This update (and all coming FREE updates, especially Trophies) should keep me coming back to Paradise City every now and then. I imagine day/night cycle and weather effects will make cruising the city an all new experience. Thanks for the hard work Criterion gals and guys.

Btw, are we going to hear about your next game anytime soon? Maybe Black 2?

Jeremy?? Quick Questions??
I would like to hear from the horses mouth so to speak…Why no Bike Damage? Did you want it but couldn’t get it in the game? Would the rating of the game really have changed with bike damage as suggested on several sites? I love the fact that you are doing such in-depth support of this game, just really disappointed that there is no bike damage.
Thanks

Since I see the folks at Criterion Games are answering questions on this post, I dare to ask my own question. Is it possible to incorporate the option to make the map on the corner of the screen move/ follow the driver instead of the stationary North- up. I find it difficult at times to find out which way to turn in a race. Just a though.. Does any one else have this problem?

What else can be said about Criterion. Never before has a game seen this much support after release, not on console anyway. You guys are really doing a great job with these updates, and not charging for them pounds the fan service home. Thanks a lot. And to think that there is still a map extension coming. Sheesh.

Do you know if trophies will be available around the time the bike update is released? (and thanks again for making them retroactive)

I have to say, I don’t usually buy racing games. It’s not that I don’t like them; I’m just not very good at them.

However, with what I’ve read about the continued support via patches, I am completely freaking amazed at what you guys are doing with this game. It’s not just the trophy support (despite the fact that being locked to your profile and thus available retroactively without fear of “cheating” is genius), but the fact that you are not just offering extra cars or modes, but aspects that COMPLETELY change the game as PATCHES (meaning, it’s not an optional extra, but a change in the game that everyone automatically gets), not DLC! I mean, the content being provided is SO MUCH MORE than what most other games CHARGE you for as DLC! WTF!!!

This is truly a very unique game as it is a constantly evolving experience. I mean – planes??? HOLY COW!

I’d like you to know that despite my fear of racing games, I went out and purchased Burnout: Paradise the other day. I spent several hours playing online so very late at night despite needing to work in the morning.

Thanks guys!

I hope the next car racing game allows you to get out of the car. That kind of freedom is really nice in a game.

Burnout Paradise has been an awesome addition to the franchise. I was a HUGE fan of Burnout Revenge and when Dominator came out I was shocked to see that this was the next step in the Burnout series, but when I heard Criterion was doing another game I saw this as the best follow up to Revenge.

I think what the guys over at Criterion are doing is awesome and it shows you can make an AWESOME game w/ awesome FREE content, I LOVE IT.
