Bionic Commando: Rearmed

Hey my friends, this is John D from Capcom. I’m pleased and honored to announce that Bionic Commando: Rearmed will become available on the PlayStation Store today for only $9.99! Ben Judd, producer extraordinaire, is so excited for this release that his head’s going to explode. And speaking of exploding heads (if you don’t get this reference, buy the game), here’s his very informative blog he prepared for all you PS fans:

Hello again fine folks of the PlayStation Blog. All good things must come to an end and with Rearmed arriving on the scene we need to finish out our all-too-short time here.

So by now you’ve seen the reviews and know EXACTLY what you are getting into. I would say that Bionic Commando Rearmed isn’t just an homage to a classic 2D game with a very innovative swing mechanic, but it’s a piece of where games started. For those who have never played a 2D game, for those who miss the classic “gamey” type games of old, for those just looking for an experience that is certainly worth your 10 dollars – Bionic Commando is it.

Even if you don’t have much interest in these types of games, I would ask you to try out the demo and decide for yourself. However, even if it’s a day one purchase for you, I would ask you to spend a little time to visit the Bionic Commando Community Site and introduce yourself. There are lots of fans of the game to share your grueling challenge room stories with, people in your area that you may be able to hook up with for a night of wild multiplayer action, and just an all around great community.

Bionic Commando is a game that I want as many people to play as possible, so it was very important to get a PSN version out the door for all of the Sony fans out there. And although I think it’s important to deliver the same experience to everyone, that doesn’t mean you can’t add in a few little things here and there to keep it interesting. So, one of the surprises is that the PSN version of Bionic Commando has an exclusive challenge room that you can only play on the PSN version of the game. It may not be the biggest of surprises, but we have tried to give a little something to the PSN users that they can keep to themselves. And with how hard this challenge stage is, it will certainly make for bragging rights!

PS Update #1: Generalissimo Killt
The charismatic leader of the Imperials, the self-styled “Generalissimo” Killt, is a former member of the FSA armed forces who became corrupted by the teachings of the long-dead dictator known as The Leader. Seeking to spread fascism across first the FSA, and then the world, Killt stumbled upon the blueprints for the ultimate doomsday weapon, known as Project Albatross, which had been created by a 20th century superpower that never survived to see it realized.

With the Albatross plans in his grasp, Killt sprung a surprise attack on the FSA, but the size of his forces compared to the might of the FSA means the conflict will be short-lived – unless the Imperials can activate the Albatross in time…

Bionic Commando

Medals
The FSA awards Medals to only the bravest soldiers for outstanding service above and beyond the call of duty. There are 12 medals to collect in total, with something to suit every type of soldier, from brawlers to thinkers.

Medal #4: Faster Than a Speeding Bullet
The Bionic Arm is a true utility device – not only does it provide many forms of attack and a nifty method of transportation, but thanks to the wonders of 2 dimensions it can also be used to defend yourself. Time your firing of the Bionic Arm’s grappling hook just right and you can stop the Imperials’ mysteriously slow-traveling bullets in mid-air! All you have to do get this Medal is to repeat that not once, not twice, but 100 times.

Bionic Commando: Rearmed

Super Joe’s Machine Gun
This legendary firearm is a prototype weapon developed by Super Joe himself. With all-round damage capability, a tremendous fire rate and seemingly unlimited ammo, this gun is perfect for clearing your way through the Imperial hordes. Only two things prevent Super Joe’s Machine Gun from being the perfect weapon – it requires a short reload period after each intense burst of fire, and nobody knows where Joe placed the prototype before he was captured by the Imperials. If you want to get your hands on this weaponry, your only option is to locate Joe.

John D again. I usually play and finish the games I work on. Not this one. I want to wait until the game launches, so I can enjoy every minute. I’ve played parts of this game and it really is that good.

So I’ve been hinting for quite some time that we have something in store for you PS Street Fighter fans. Well, I’m happy to announce that Street Fighter Alpha is available today in the PSone Classics section of the store for $5.99! Some of you may be asking, “Come on John D, was that’s it?” Um, if I say more, the PR team will kick my a$$, so I’ll leave it as a definitely, maybe. (Eh, my girlfriend made me watch that. It wasn’t that bad, shhh!)

As always, I’ll try my best to answer your questions and comments. I’ll be back to give you updates on Age of Booty, our strategic pirate party game, and Mega Man 9, the next installation of the classic series in 8-bit glory!

Till next time! Go-GO-Go-Bionic!

  • After having played through all but 3 of the Areas already, I can definitively say that Hilary Goldsteins review is WAY off base. It is a good game…but far from the best downloadable game yet. SSHD still takes that cake.

The implimentation of a flawed LIVES system is so 1985, that it hurts me deep inside to see something so awful and antiquated used here. Gameplay is fair enough, though it is far from intuitive, and some of the jumps and challenges are just so frustrating it hurts.

Overall, a decent product, but not worth 10 bucks, and certainly not the 9.4 IGN gave it. It is at best a B+ game. John, perhaps you should stop clinging to IGN’s review, it has only made me think of you as somewhat foolish at this point.

    • Oh, I thought you were gonna wait for trophies to be implemented before you bought the game? I appreciate your support, really!

Stop clinging to the IGN review? Go to Metacritic and see what other reviews are saying. I\’ll take a B+ anyday. This game is fast becoming the best reviewed downloadable game to date. Foolish? I respect your opinion, but honestly, your hate is wearing thin, sorry.

  • Just stopped by to tell everyone that this game is absoutely horrible…it is not worth $10 and I will feel the pain of buying it for the next week at least. I hate my life right now…how I could be so easily conned into buying it….it is trash pure and simple and I would give anything to have my $10 back….anything.

dont make the same mistake I made and buy this game…you will regret it I garuntee …it is HORRIBLE it is stale dry frustrating…ugly pointless…i mean I cant say enough bad stuff about it I really hate it and everytime I see the little red square on my games list I get a little depressed….I WANT MY MONEY BACK PLEASE ..

If you have any brain in your head at all you will move on and forget this piece of trash…..dont let sony con you into buying it its a worthless game and I cannot for the life of me seem to have any type of fun with it at all……you hear that??? no fun at all!!!!!!

  • @ 201

The production values alone are worth the 10 bucks.

as for the live system…capcom goal was to bring that old school vibe and boy did they deliver (best digital release of the year so far)

    @John

now that this is over :( I guess we wont see you much till MM9 blogs. thx for sharing here in the PS blog! been awesome reading your comments and hopefully you are not out for long :)

  • what about call of duty 4’s trophies?

    and the game is awesome.

p.s. put marvel vs capcom 2 on PSN people!!!
    and FF7

  • Bought both games on thursday, very happy with my purchases so far! I’m a veteran of Bionic Commando from way back in the NES days, and I love this remake and all the bells and whistles that it comes with! Can’t wait for the trophies too! Assuming they’ll be based off the in-game medals a la Uncharted, I’m glad they’re not all impossibly hard like several other trophy lists revealed recently.

Used to play Streetfighter 2 against my buddy in the mid ’90’s a lot too, haven’t owned one of those games though for over 10 years now. Felt good to play Alpha. Can’t wait to show my friend (he owns the “other” system lol).

Still waiting for Capcom to release the Resident Evils in the North American PS Store. Part 1 and 2 have been out in the Japan PS Store for a long time now. I still have them on PS One discs so I’m okay, but I’m sure there are plenty other people out there who would love to own them again as a PS3 download.

  • As you know John, my PS3 is at University 190 miles away from home so I can’t play this on my PS3 at the moment but my twin brother got it on 360 so I have my BCR fix for now.

I really hate the 360 controller and the moment I go to University in two weeks, I am going to get the PS3 version and play it whilst I settle in at University.

Is Mega Man 9 going to have trophies? I know your probably tired of hearing the same question but Mega Man / Rockman is one of my game franchises and would love some challenging trophies to acquire.

I am tempted to get Alpha but I already have the Japanese version of Anthology on PS2 but the original Alpha on PSP though sounds tempting to give $5.99 for that experience.

Have any idea in the future when Mega Man 9 is out? I really really want to play that game! Is the PSN version going to offer both the arranged and original soundtracks in the game? Only I noticed that two soundtracks for Rockman 9 are coming out in September.

    Thanks again for the support!

    • Hey Rockmanjoey! Good luck with the upcoming semester. Don\’t let school get in the way of your partying. j/k.

Mega Man 9 should come out around September. I\’ll ask about the soundtrack thing.

  • Oh few more things to ask.

Will Bionic Commando have trophies. When I ask that, I am referring to the sequel which is either coming out at the end of the year or next year. I saw the trailer with the Retro RAD costume and that is f***ing fantastic!

Ever considered releasing Mega Man Powered Up on PSN? The user generated content would suit the PSN very well!

I am playing Bionic Commando Rearmed on the “other” system on Hard and its really good. Once I am back up at Uni, I’ll play the PS3 version!

  • I can’t believe some of the negative comments here. Why are people buying it without trying the demo?

The hate basically amounts to people finding the game too hard. It’s a remake of an old CAPCOM game! Of course it’s going to have old school mechanics, that’s why we love Capcom!

  • JohnD, great game! Getting a bit frustrated with the controls but nothing of a huge deal.
You guys at Capcom, and a few more developers (Incognito and Criterion to name two of the best), are the ones who are really showing real backing up to gamers and the community. You make this look easy, wish the ppl at EA, Activision and others would take note of your involvement with gamers!
    Keep up the good work!!!

  • will we be seeing marvel vs capcom 1 or 2 anytime soon?

what about some ps1 horror classics like Resident evil?

the real question that always kept me wondering was…is it possible or will there be ps2 original ports for downloadable content psn? like the microsoft xbox 360 with its xbox originals.

    • Well, I for one would love to see PS2 original ports. The PS2 is still selling well. I think it will be a bit until we see a \”PS2 Classics\” section. Hopefully, I\’m wrong.

  • Thanks for letting me John D!

BEN READ THIS IN GAME MUSIC!

  • LISTEN CAPCOM!!!!!! LISTEN

The day you announce Monster Hunter for the PS3, is the day you start getting my money. Until then, I am not buying a single game from you guys

    • What\’s up Hater? I knew you\’d show up sooner or later. How\’s it going? Why don\’t you try out the demo at least? It\’s free. :)

  • I just want to congratulate to all the team members that worked in this game, you guys have done a really wonderful job, amazing graphics, music and gameplay. Hope to see more games coming from your team on the PSN. ;)

  • @John Diamonon
I played the demo and I hate the facts that it doesn’t have jump button :(. But other than that it is a great game, and is something I willing buy. Well as Soon as you guys announce Monster Hunter on the PS3. I also download the 1941 demo, and I actually F#$king love that game. Again, I will buy both of them when a monster hunter game is announce for the ps3. :) So the sooner you announce it, the sooner you guys will get my money for SFIV, 1941, BC, Street Fighter Alpha, RE5 and other future games you guys release.

But you guys did a hell of a job on those two games, and you should take a vacation or something, because you guys earn it. Congrats, and I hope those games sell well on both xbox live and the PSN.

    ***IMPORTANT***
Why don’t you guys just release a PSN version of Monster Hunter? Like what you are doing with BC and 1941. I mean, it not going to be a full production game, and I will buy it. Just take new Monster Hunter for the psp that was release in Japan a few months ago, improve the graphic, add trophies, us the PSN online service, and release it. I will pay up to $60 dollars if you guys do that. JUST RELEASE A MONSTER HUNTER ON THE PS3 PLEASE.

    • Hey Hater, I like that idea. We want MH to be a hit here in the states, so we\’re doing our research to find out the best ways we can offer the franchise to the fans.

  • Ok, I’m ready to buy this game but I hear that the saves are not linked to the PSN ID like Burnout and Eden were so how are the trophies going to be retro active then?

  • thanks guys for making this happen… i so wanted this game in the past and the new remake of bionic commando rearmed rock… thanks again… you peeps have work so hard to give us what we want… thanks from the bottom of this cuban/america heart…lol playstation ROCK!

  • XD I love this game (Bionic Commando). Played for 6 hours straight last night and cant wait to go home after work to play again. This game is worth ALOT more than ten bucks. Thanks for the super great game.

  • @ 201 and 202

Like John said you are both entitled to your opinions but to come here and tell everyone not to buy it is just ridiculous. I guess if you don’t like tacos and coke everyone should hate it too? =p

    @ John

DL the demo yesterday and loved it! The old school vibe brings joy once again to me! I’m getting today since it was pay day! YAY! I just really wish BEN hears me when I say we want IN-GAME MUSIC! PLEASE!

    Thanks Capcom!

    • Another vote for in-game music. I have a question for all you BCR fans. Adding this feature would take additional development resources. Would you consider paying for this feature and a few more through DLC? Just putting it out there and seeing how you feel.

  • “Another vote for in-game music. I have a question for all you BCR fans. Adding this feature would take additional development resources. Would you consider paying for this feature and a few more through DLC? Just putting it out there and seeing how you feel.”

I would not pay for this feature because I feel the music in the game fits so well with the game, but if it were a free add on I would try it out.

  • BCR FAN here responding to your question #218:

I personally would pay for extra DLC but paying for IN-GAME MUSIC would make me feel cheated when we are seeing more and more developers adding it to their current games for free. Overall I would be very tempted to pay for it but I would not necessarily be happy about it.

That’s my two cents on paying for it… But I do want it! IN-GAME MUSIC BEN! PLEASE!

  • Don’t buy this game, its horrible!

Actually, NO, the game is just awesome, for £6.99 (yea its unfair how we pay more then u.s but o well) also thank scee for getting it to the store today.

john, great game! one of the best so far, problem is that it is £6.99 which is about $14 :(

    Good work team

  • Answering question #218: No John D. The soundtrack for Bionic Commando Rearmed is excellent! I only think sports games and driving games should have custom music. This “feature” is a insult to the great music and sound that the designers have made. You could lower the game music and turn on your stereo, if you really hate the music.

The DLC feature I would pay for is online multi-player/co-op. I would also pay for more challenge rooms.

PS I voted for Black Tiger in your poll. Sadly not many others have voted for it. I may see if I can get all my friends to vote also.

  • Hmm, John, if in-game music was 69p i would buy it

  • Sweet im going to buy this game right now!!!!! I hope you guys will include trophies and ingame music in the future

  • John, its about $1.70. I’m in the UK btw :P

  • john i would not pay for in game soundtrack the feature is useless for this game!i love the music in it already.i would pay for more missions and online co op but only if its stay true to the bionic commando game play which i say this game did well im 19 lol so i do remember playing the old game a while ago but i dont remember on what and how well sad i know!

on a side note john d what the possabity of capcom making a rpg?

  • john i would not pay for in game soundtrack the feature is useless for this game!i love the music in it already.i would pay for more missions and online co op but only if its stay true to the bionic commando game play which i say this game did well im 19 lol so i do remember playing the old game a while ago but i dont remember on what and how well sad i know!

  • After messing around with the demo countless times, I decided to forgo waiting for the trophy patch and buy the game. All I can say is that it is an incredible game and you guys deserve all the accolades you guys are getting.

  • I so want to know why people hate BC:Rearmed.
Yeah the controlls are some what of a pain but the game is great fun. Yeah you might get stuck every so often. But do you really want to beat the game in a day.

I loved the old school Atari and NES style games that have no save feature and if you died you have to start at the beginning of the whole game again not just the level you were on.

I think todays games are to easy. Back when I was growing up playing the Atari systems, NES and even the Genesis ones I would get I thought pretty far in the game then die and have to redo every thing I just did and very rarely finished the game. Now I can beat any game I play because you can save half way through the game. Heck if it were not for the cheat codes to use on the old systems I would have gone insane.

Like I said a few days ago John D you and the guys & gals over at Capcom did a great job on this game. So I can only hope to see many more new games come out like this one and the new Megaman. Capcom has a great backcatalog so there should be many Capcom could give a second life too.

  • o and john i forgot to say i brought bionic commando already im very happy with it!!!!!

  • @John

    I didn’t say I was waiting, I said I would get it, because I’m a BC fanboy.

As for my opinion and “hate”: I don’t hate BCR. In fact, I said it was a good game, just not the 9.4 HG gave it on IGN and certainly not the masterpiece you’re making it out to be.

It is challenging, and oftentimes rewarding, however MORE OFTEN it is frustrating and down right silly with the antiquated lives system, and complete unintuitive controls.

It is a good piece of software with some pretty annoying flaws that reviewers are obviously overlooking in lieu of nostalgia and that fact that digitally distributed games have been seeing a drought of quality lately.

I humbly respect you as a developer of the game. I’m not a hater…don’t make assumptions. I’ve merely illustrated some facts that shouldn’t be so easily overlooked.

(As an aside, my rant on trophies is not hate…that said, not including that at launch IS unacceptable, and looks foolish and lazy on Capcom’s part. End of story. Hopefully this patch is coming soon? As in before the end of August soon?)

    • Madman, the hate I was referring to was you comment that I was looking foolish by clinging on to the IGN review. Read other reviews, you don\’t have to take my word for it.

Anyways. Ben is working on having trophies available. This is not any easy thing to do. Even games that are coming out. The games that are being released in the next few months are already in the final stages of development. The development cycles for most of these games are way over a year, at least. To have trophies implemented in these games, they probably needed to have this feature planned for from the start. This was difficult to plan for because the information for this feature was not available until recently. If the feature is not planned for from the beginning, usually it’s hard to find budget to support this through a later patch. Also, integration of this feature isn’t easy to retroactively implement and most likely will take development resources that wasn’t accounted for.

  • John, you are probably the best blogger I have ever seen on the PSBlog! I want to say thanks to Ben Judd and Grin for one of the best PSN games I have ever played!

Will it be possible for Capcom to port some of the rarer PS1 games, like Breath of Fire 3 or Mega Man Legends 1 and 2? Those games are hard to find (even more so than regular PS1 games) nowadays. I think a new generation of gamers deserve a chance to play some good ‘ol Capcom classics.

Also would it be possible for Capcom to include some Avatars for PSN IDs? How awesome would it be to have Megaman, Street Fighter and other Capcom game characters as avatars?

  • John Diamonon

I will pay for more missions, a “valuable” new content ( Challenge Rooms are nice but I need something more… ) . Ingame music i really don´t care, never used in any system, IMHO waste of time when you can hear the amazing BCR soundtrack.

  • Hey John – you should update your post to advise that BC:R is now available on the EU PSN. Thanks to Capcom and SCEE for sorting out whatever was causing the delay and getting it out on a Friday. Great. Although it’s another week until I get home to my PS3 (oh and the wife, daughter).

  • Love the music in BC:R, custom soundtrack for this title wouldn’t get much use from me.

  • It’s funny. I see some comments complaining that the game came out A SINGLE DAY after the other version. Then other people complaining that it should’ve been delayed to allow for implementing trophy support. It just goes to show that you cannot please the whiners.

I, for one, absolutely love the game. It really made me remember when games were actually challenging and I would clear out my entire afternoon during summer vacation to tackle games on my NES and then later Genesis. When I found myself repeating this one part to get whatever was at the end of a hidden spike-lined hallway over and over, it brought back memories.

Thank you for making this. It really shows you guys care. Screw the whiners. If they can’t appreciate what they’ve got, they don’t deserve to play.

Now, for the next game you guys remake, I would love to see an HD Strider, as I said last week. However, you guys have a perfectly good PSP game in the form of Ultimate Ghosts n’ Goblins, that would probably be a really nice PSN download. Give it some thought. *wink wink* *nudge nudge*

  • Oh yeah, also screw the people who want custom soundtracks. The music is perfect. I can’t understand people wanting to play their own music over a game that has perfect music. And I say this as a musician.

  • bonjour je suis francais avez vous des info sur le support de trophée qui a été annoncé sur bionic commando dans un patch
    merci

  • If you’re curious tonito wants to know if you’re going to be patching trophy support this summer…well, more like demands, haha.

  • John Diamonon replied on August 15, 2008 at 9:41 am

“Hey Hater, I like that idea. We want MH to be a hit here in the states, so we’re doing our research to find out the best ways we can offer the franchise to the fans.”

You have to remember that Monster Hunter was release in the state 2004 and not a lot of PS2 users had Broadband connect and a PS2 network adapter. So that didn’t help the game. But now a lot more people in the states have a Broadband connection and also have don’t need to buy a network adapter. Releasing a Monster Hunter Game now on the ps3 will only help the franchise in the States.
Releasing it on the Wii will not help you guys out at all from my point of view. Considering the fact that the Wii don’t really have a good online service in place, and will not have one in the future.

  • Answering question #218

While in game music would be nice, I think you would want to patch it in with multiple other addons, like brand new campaigns, music, video recording, online co-op/multiplayer. If all this was included I think most would pay $10 all over again, since we would be basically getting a whole new game but no new engine would have to be developed. I saw another poster suggest that Grin/Capcom use this engine for alot of remakes in the future and I could not agree more. Would be nice to see future remakes also reinvent the game some what more but I understand this whole project was a big test for Ben (being from the west in Capcom Japan for a Producer is a pretty big deal). I am also VERY happy that this “test” has worked out so well and should pave the way for more projects, but at the same time hope it does not turn into shovelware for Capcom using great developers like Grin and producers like Ben have really paid off. Also I have noticed that you have not just remade the US version of Bionic Commando but have looked at all versions (Japan) and taken the best form it also. Anyways GREAT game, finished it last night and love the new boss fight at the end! Oh and by far the best blogger on PSblog! >;)

    • Thanks Rob for your input, I appreciate it. Ben and his team did an amazing job with BCR and was great to work with. I hope I have the opportunity to work on another title with him in the future.

  • I didn’t read all 240+ comments, but just in case nobody else mentioned it – Street Fighter Alpha for PS1 has audio compatiblity issues on the PSP. It doesn’t play the audio track during the character select screen or the match intro screen.

  • I bought BCR on PSN and I’m totally enjoying it. One of the best downloadable games. Thanks for the continued support John D. and Capcom.

I’m also putting down my vote for more Capcom PSOne games. Like how the Japanese store has Resident Evil DC and Resident Evil 2.

  • In terms of add ons I would pay for would be online multiplayer (co-op)

  • Will we ever get SSF2 Turbo HD?? Or any SF2 arcade ports w/online play?

    I was pretty disappointed when i saw SF2A as a ps1 port.

  • john this is off topic but its something i like to get ur opinion on!now the newer tv are out already any plans to support them?some of them have smell-o-vision put in and there also full 3d tv out already?also what your opinion on these tv?
i know this is well off topic but i would like to here what the people of capcom think about them!

    • I\’ve never seen (or smelled for that matter) a smell-o-vision TV but I imagine there would be interesting feature opportunities for franchises like Dead Rising and Resident Evil. Rotten flesh smell FTW!

  • have only played the demo but enjoyed it & reminiscing bout the ol days, you done a good job on it i’ll be buying it next week

would like in-game music but wouldnt want to pay for it on its own, but with a couple of extra levels or somthing and i might be more tempted

Definitely would like to see sf2 turbo along with ghosts n goblins on the psn store as well

    keep up the good work!

  • John, J’adore ce jeu!!! (I’m french-canadian). Tout est exactement comme je l’espèrais… La mecanique de jeu est comme l’ancienne version 8-bit, et les irritant majeurs (continues…) on été réparés. Fantastique!!!

And what about the multiplayer… on the main mission, it’s awsome to play with my friend who is also a BC fan from the 80’s. And the multiplayer stage!!! AH!!! Don’t touch the floor is my favorite!!! It is an awsome party game mode. BTW the music and sound effects are really nice, the perfect mix of 8-bit a today’s sound and music. I whish Capcom could do the same with Megaman 1 and 2.

To conclude, I would say that if SF II HD is half as good as BC:R, it will be a dream come true! :)

euh any SF II HD release date ??? (as if nobody already asked that ;) )

    Thanks!

    • Hedrakk, I\’m glad the game\’s everything you hoped for. You are right, the game is old school, complete with the sometimes frustrating but rewarding gameplay. (BCR est très difficile pour de plus jeunes joueurs).

We\’re shooting for a Fall release for SFHD.

  • smell -o vison isnt out but they do have demo station when they do the nyc tv show.so what your opinion on the 3d glasses tv that are out?
i think samsung had the 3d tv out.

p.s i hope u dont too long to return onto the blog

    • It will be interesting to see how popular these new types of sets will be. I\’m sure once there\’s a decent install base, game companies will take advantage of the new technology.

  • Ben should contact the boys and gals behind Super Stardust HD. That was an early PSN title, that had trophies implemented WITH the update of trophies.

Clearly they aren’t as difficult to implement as Grin or Ben would have you believe. Its simply lazy/inefficient development. Heck, DMC4 had the idea of “achievements” in mind from the start, and even used the XMB to tie them to a users account…and yet no patch. It isn’t a matter of difficulty, its a matter of Capcom not giving a crap, and thats the sad truth.
