How it Works: SingStar PS2-PS3 compatibility

89 0

Hey everyone, just wanted to give you a quick update on some recent SingStar news. Yesterday we announced that SingStar PS3 Vol. 2 will be coming to the U.S. this October. You can check out the full details on SingStar PS3 Vol.2, as well get the latest on today’s SingStore update at IGN.

Coming out of Leipzig, you may have read about a cool new SingStar PS3 disc swap feature which incorporates the SingStar PS2 library. We wanted to make sure everyone was up to speed on what the disc feature entailed, so here’s the lowdown from the SingStar development team:

SingStar track compatibility across PS2 & PS3 is enabled via the Disc Swap feature.

The feature has previously been available on SingStar games for both PlayStation 2 and PLAYSTATION 3, but for the first time owners of SingStar for PS3 will be able to play songs from PS2 discs in their collection.

While playing a SingStar PS3 disc, at the song select screen, hit the [select] button to swap discs and play the songs from the inserted disc. The songs are not saved to the hard drive.

This is a unique feature for SingStar and makes it possible for fans who have already built up their PS2 SingStar collection to continue enjoying it on PS3. It will be delivered via a free game update later this year and will work with all current SingStar PS3 discs. It will also be included on future SingStar PS3 discs releasing next year.

This new feature will work with all current PS3 system models and does not require a system software update.

  • My wife bought Sing Star for PS2 thinking that it was real karaoke type of game, but it was a sing-along with singers voice… isn’t there a way to take off the voice, some people just want to play the game as a karaoke.

Heard you can go into recording mode with the eyetoy but I haven’t had the chance to get eyetoy for PS2… would the PS3 eye work? I have the PS3 cam. Would be even better if you can go to options and be able to choose voice on/off…

  • Hey Singstar Devs,

I have to say that I was one of the biggest and most excited fans of the PS3 Singstar when it was first announced then I saw that Europe got it and weren’t all that pleased with the Singstore, and then the US has got it and SUPPORT HAS BEEN PISS POOR! You can try to spin your success however you want but the fact is if you release 500 songs and 90% of them suck then you have only 50 songs that really matter. When will we see songs that are currently relevant to the US as in Top 40? When will we have the option to download songs from the Singstore that were on the PS2 versions? When will we see popular music acts such as the Gorillas and Queen that are being released in the UK but not over here? I think the vast majority of US gamers are not interested in buying further discs to add for there Singstar collection. I want to build my music library on my hard drive. Oh and you are major jerks for chumping us 2 weeks ago for songs and then releasing 36 songs of mostly crap, 13 of those which are Spanish and most people in the US have never heard of. When I heard about the possibility of ripping PS2 games to the PS3 HD, I got real excited because I figured you had begun to take a lesson from real gamer enthusiasts such as the Rock Band crew is doing with RB2 backward support of RB1. The problem with disc swap is if you are playing with new people who are a bit reluctant to get up and sing they don’t have the full library sitting there in front of them to peruse. YOu have to say we got other discs full of songs and then swap and then let them look and then possibly have to switch again. Its not seamless enough. I’d pay to redownload those songs on the Singstore but you haven’t given me the friggin option. Anyways, get your act together cuz you have made me a really cranky person everytime I hear about your game.

  • Well, tuaamin13 (29) states it pretty succinctly. Nicely done. For those who didn’t read it, basically, if you could just rip the tracks you could just buy it for a day, take the tracks and return it.

This is a good solution and for those that love their SingStar this is certainly a welcome feature.

Now where are those wireless mics? :P

Devs, this explains how Rock Band is setting up there song ripping feature. Take some notes and apply something similar. We all know licensing issues isn’t a problem if they are able to take care of it. So stop hiding behind that and lets figure this thing out. I’d pay extra and more than the $5 that Rock Band is going to keep it at to be able to have my songs all seamlessly displayed on the carousel.

  • Too bad I have a 40 GB PS3 and it doesn’t play my PS2 games.

    :(

  • I cant believe this. We finally get vol.2 and there is no Morrissey. I think I might be done with this game now :(

  • You have just made me upset. My friends and I love Singstar on PS2. We bought the PS3 version with the hope of new songs. Our hopes were smashed. Most of the artists are UK acts that are not popular in the US.
Your R&B section is a joke and your Hip-Hop section is sad. I think you should put more R&B and Hip-Hop. There is only one good R&B singing game out there, hip hop is extremely popular worldwide and is fun to do in Singstar but you have such a sad selection.

  • @55 gardea, i think they mean ALL PS3’s will be able to play these PS2 discs…

so…how is this possible? the PS3 will read a singstar PS2 disc, but not other ones????!?!?!?

man, they really need to bring back backwards compatibility for all ps2 games..

  • You know this announcement sounded great at first but the more I read about it the less exciting it becomes. The disc swapping this is not a big deal to me, I know the PS2 SS games did that which is fine. But if you can’t record your performance on the PS3 while singing songs from the PS2 then that pretty much defeats the purpose of switching discs. The interviewee boasts how great the my singstar online community has grown and how entertaining it is (which I agree with) but then you can’t allow that feature to be used with PS2 SS songs? What sense does that make? And also this announcement means nothing to those with 40gig or getting the new 80gig PS3s because they don’t play PS2 discs thanks to Sony’s new strategy to abandon backwards compatibility.

Another gripe I’ve had with this game is the really lousy support the US singstore has received. That’s great that there are over 500 songs in the store but it doesn’t really matter when there are only 40 songs worth buying and DL’ing. I know that the game is made in Europe but does the Singstar team have people that pay attention to what music has been/is popular in the US (and other territories) rather than just EU? I would really like to see more relevant and recognizable artist that would appeal to a US consumer (like myself) in the US singstore.

I really do enjoy the game but after singing ‘Mr.Brightside’ ‘Hit me baby’ and ‘So Sick’ a few times with friends/family we get tired of it and throw in Rock Band for hours on end. I think these issues really need to be addressed appropriately so that you can keep fans of the game (like myself) coming back to the game.

  • “This is a unique feature for SingStar and makes it possible for fans who have already built up their PS2 SingStar collection to continue enjoying it on PS3″

it says right there..”fans who have already built up their PS2 … collection to continue enjoying it on PS3”

ok, now change this sentence a little and…

“This is a great feature for the PS3 and makes it possible for fans who have already built up their PS2 collection to continue enjoying it on PS3”

    [rant]

Many, many, many, many, people have TONS of PS2 games, just collecting dust because we have limited entertainment center space and don’t want another video games system cluttering up the room…

please understand that PEOPLE WANT backwards compatibility with the PS3!

this post just makes it worse, because it is so close!

and you acknowledge people would enjoy playing PS2 discs on the PS3…jeesh..

it must be that you still want people to buy the PS2’s AND PS3’s, huh?

    [/rant]

FYI I have the 60-gig launch unit, the REAL PS3, the BEST PS3, and am only afraid of when my warranty expires and they won’t replace mine with another 60-gigger..

I appluad what you guys have done for singstar by allowing us to use the PS2 discs, and it is a step in the right direction…

hopefully SOMEDAY they will wise up and bring back the launch unit original specs as a new sku with the 120-gig drive..

    someday..

  • Those of you complaining about BC on here need to realise you had 2 years to buy a PS3 with BC in it, and if you didn’t go for it when the MGS4 80GB bundle came out (which was an amazing deal), you waited too long. Stop acting like you didn’t have a choice here…

    Cheers,
    – Matthew

  • I’d kill a man to get the Guitar Hero series to do this. Good work, guys… give the people value and they’ll give you money.

  • I’m not going to focus on other issues like the inability to redownload songs if your PS3 breaks… What we really need are more current and/or popular songs in the US SingStore. I’m disappointed with every update, and it’s not a case of personal music taste. It’s that there are never any current songs. It’s all oldies, or non-mainstream stuff I’ve never heard of. Or UK-centric music that was never popular here. Paulina Bozek seems to believe that “US-centric” means “English Language” according to her IGN interview. I disagree. Please shape up, I’m not investing more money into the Store otherwise. Thanks.

  • To Touchy Eddy:
It’s a sing along more or less.

  • I have to agree with Spaceghost on several points sadly.
SingStar support has been lousy, and the updates horrible.

SSCE needs to be reprimanded for the bad song choices and lack of updates and content.
SingStar has the potential to be the greatest music game and you guys are blowing it.

Sorry for the negative comment, I was just really depressed after todays update after such a long wait.

  • I agree with your first commenter:

If the PS2-disc-based tracks do not show up in the “master track list” from the Singstar PS3 menu, then this feature is of little utility. In a party, which is based on shuffling through the master track list (with the skip feature, also), having 30 (or more!) of your songs hidden from the group just won’t do – nor would a shuffle mode with only 30 songs to choose from do.

Can you please tell us that the song titles are saved onto the PS3 track list, and then you are prompted to swap discs when you select the song? This would be useful.

If not, I’m afraid I won’t be buying any PS2 discs. I guess I’ll just have to wait (forever?) for you guys to pull your heads out of your you-know-wheres and put the PS2 songs onto the SingStore so we can PAY YOU MONEY to purchase them.

  • Any word if there will be Japanese songs released in the future? It’s one of the hopes I had upon buying the game and I know other people want them.

    Cheers.

  • Singstar PS3 has so much potential but is currently disappointing.
    1. Selection of US songs is lacking. The Market is clearly for Europeans. Why not have a unified Singstore?
    2. Connectivity to Singstore is erratic. Most of the times it’s very slow.
    3. Future ability to SWAP PS2 discs is NOT forward-thinking considering Rock Band 2 is doing something better. Why not just resell them on the Singstore? Why not have us DL the PS2 songs for a fee?
    4. DRM for the songs is the worst of its kind! You can only DL once. What if you change your Hard disk? What if your PS3 needs to be replaced?
    5. Vocal reduction doesn’t work for all songs? How come RB can do this and they also use master tracks.
    6. The devs don;t listen. Multiple complaints are in the US board yet we haven’t heard any single official response a t all.

LIPS is coming out in the Fall and they allow songs from your IPOD. Can we ever hope Singstar can do the same?
    :(

  • I need Singstar Singalong with Disney will people like me have to import it from the UK or will you just release it in the US?

  • Also In An IGN Interview:

Will SS PS3 Vol. 2 have Trophy support? If so, are there plans to patch in Trophy support for Vol. 1?

Paulina Bozek: “We will be adding trophy support into a future version of SingStar.”
But Richard Bates said in a response to a comment “Early Next Year”

Will trophies be updated to all volumes of Singstar or are there separate trophies for different volumes? In other words If you own more than one volume do all the trophies combine?

  • I love Singstar…
    Family loves it….
    We have weekly Singstar parties…

    But honest to God…
    The song selection blows..

We bought bout 10 songs we like..but my family likes more of the old stuff…
    Stuff like
    Michael Jackson
    Tears for Fears
    Earth, Wind and Fire
    Lionel Ritchie
    Phil Collins
    More Culture Club!!!
    Prince – Lets go crazy
    Donna Summer!!!
    Kc and the sunshine band
    George Benson
    James Ingram
    Barry Manilow
    Isley brothers
    Michael Bolton
    Stevie Wonder
    Chicago

And on behalf of my sister and me:
    Evanescence
    Hilary Duff
    Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus
    Within Temptation
    Shakira

Richard that 2.2 Million songs sold on the Singstore could be 10 million if you incorporate the artistes people want..
This new update blows…Nothing to see there really… A good song here and there but thats it..I know there’s trouble licensing this music but please do it for me, my family and the millions of Singstar fans around the world. (I live in Trinidad (Caribbean) by the way.)

The Singstar platform can only grow…Don’t let it fail…Make it happen Guys!

P.S. My sister is nudging me:
    Hilary Duff…

Her latest album “Dignity”, she would love to sing: Stranger <<<<<<<<<<< SHE NEEDS THAT SONG. Its basically my
    sister’s fave song EVER….

  • Meh. I all but gave up on SingStar for the PS3 after all the lousy SingStore updates. Song after song of artists and songs I’ve never heard of. Seriously, the store updates have been absolutely terrible.

  • it would be nice if they could at least give the game some support. i believe this is about the 1st post on this blog about singstar since it came out. with as good as the other music games have been doing, i figure sony would be promoting the crap out of this game. this game came out in may and we still can’t register on the singstar website or even view the US song list on there. when will the support for this game begin?

  • PLEASE PLEASE HELP ME!!!!

singstar Bollywood was released in Europe, ANY CHANCE we can have that in U.S or ANY change that Pal version will work in my U.S PS3.. PLEAZE PLEAZE HELP

  • sony this is awesome thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • To all you US gamers complaining that you’ve never heard of the ‘UK-centric’ track listings, fear not, over in the UK we’ve hardly heard of most of the songs either. I think we’d been assuming that they were American bands that never made it big in Europe. It seems Sony is only taking what they can get to put on the store, not what people ask for.

I agree with poster #71: more classic tunes are needed. Songs that everyone knows and can sing along with, but poster #57 illustrates the problem when s/he asks for more hip hop and R&B. In my house we find R&B incredibly dull, and I’m the only person who even slightly likes hip hop and even I think it’s terrible to sing along with, but #57 thinks that more is needed on there. You can’t please all the people all of the time.

This said, the range of tracks is still pretty woeful, with the majority being filler tracks and major classics in all genres are absent. Many songs just aren’t that much fun to sing with.

‘Lips’ is coming out with some very innovative features, so SingStar needs to catch up very fast!

  • This update is kinda pointless when you consider that Sony seem to be deaf and stubborn to listen to it’s fans and instead abandon ANY kind of PS2 BC altogether. Give us a REAL PS3 model with BC then come back and make an announcement. A large majority of your consumer fanbase want it. Kaz Hirai needs to wake up and listen to us.

  • You know… the whole disc-swapping thing is a load of BS. If I can’t get the full functionality of my game with the PS2 songs then why don’t you just put them on the store so I can download it?!?

SingStar was long delayed here in the US (probably because of licensing issues) but don’t tease me with “massive updates” of music that is definitely not popular in the USA.

This has been and continues to be the most disappointing and poorly supported game that I own on the PS3.

  • Aw, that’s a shame. When i thought it let you rip the songs onto your HD, like rock band is doing, I was actually going to buy this. I hate the disc swap.. there just isn’t enough decent songs on a single disc. It always ends up being a swap after 1 or 2 songs. bleh :/

  • First they should fix that you can use the BD RC to control Singstar. That would be much more comfortable because you could easily control it with one hand, while holding the mic in the other.

  • I agree with FritoZ, make BC possible already Sony, people want to play their PS2 games, the fact that you are “magically” able to make PS2 Singstar games play on any PS3 makes it obvious that BC is possible and you are just not listening to your customer’s demands.

  • Will I be able to play the songs on my copy of Singstar Bollywood on my US PS3? So far, I have been unable to use this copy of Singstar at all because of it not being from the US region. I’m also wondering if the similar PS2 functionality you mentioned would solve this problem for me. Thx

  • I’m in the US and my wife is a huge Christian Castro fan. Why can’t I find him in the singstore.

  • Sony needs to leverage its HUGE (and I mean HUUUUGE) stable of artists whose works they control on their record label. Music games are the hottest thing in the market right now, and Sony is squandering a goldmine in BOTH sales of game software/hardware AND sales of DLC. Karaoke games are perfect for those of us who think toy guitars and drums are too irritating to master.

Sony needs to get the entire catalogs of artists like these up on the store:

    Aerosmith
    Billy Joel
    Bob Dylan
    Bruce Springsteen
    Britney Spears
    Carrie Underwood
    Celine Dion
    Christina Aguilera
    Dido
    Duran Duran
    Elvis Presley
    Franz Ferdinand
    George Michael
    INXS
    Journey
    Justin Timberlake
    Kelly Clarkson
    Michael Jackson
    Oasis
    Pearl Jam
    R. Kelly
    Shakira
    The Strokes
    Tori Amos
    Whitney Houston

What do these people have in common, besides sales and popularity? THEY’RE ALL F-ING SONY ARTISTS!!!! And this was just a select sample.

Sony is letting a goldmine slip away. It’s another classic example of them designing a great product and then utterly failing to market it (Betamax, Minidisc, SXRD televisions, Singstar…)

    WAKE UP, stupid Sony Execs!!!

  • ^^^
    |||
Oh yeah, I forgot Sony’s E-Reader as another great product which failed to be marketed. Quite analagous in fact – Amazon has come along and created the online store that Sony failed to with its Kindle.

  • While I’m on a rant-roll, can I just ask: Why doesn’t Sony sell Singstar in Asia, the BIRTHPLACE of karaoke, and the place in the world it is most insanely popular?

I swear, if I were a stockholder, I’d just about plotz at the stupidity being exhibited…

  • For some reason this does not actually work for me. I have a PS3 and the SingStar disc for PS3 that came with it, but when I hit [select] while in the song select screen nothing happens! I’ve even tried ejecting the disc but that doesn’t work either. Can someone explain what’s going on and how I can access this fabled disc swap feature?

FYI – When I plugged in the PS3 yesterday it successfully completed a software update. Could this be a firmware issue caused by the latest update?

    Thanks in advance!

    GP

  • Unfortunately I am not technically minded so this may have already been thought about.

Would it be possible to BEGIN a game of SingStar where we have to insert all our owned discs, be it PS2 or PS3 so that the Carousel gets updated (this time only), from then on in all songs are in the Carousel, the game can tell you what disc to insert, and if you restart i.e. play somewhere else, change game, send the rental back! you cant use those songs.

I love the idea of being able to use the PS2 singstar discs, I totally understand the copyright of music and pop videos and hope SONY continue in their efforts against any form of piracy (why should I pay X because someone takes the risk of chipping to pay Y).

My ONLY gripe – why tempt us with a pre-game video PLAINLY showing wireless mics, but giving us no time scale?

SCEE – Are the wireless mics coming with PS4?

    Regards

    Mark.

  • I have one simple question… When is this update goingto be released? I got hopeful when the firmware update 2.20 came out, but that doesn’t seemt o have enabled this. Please tell me we don’t have to wait (and buy) Vol 3 before this happens?
