Warhawk Operation: Fallen Star

Dylan Jobe's Avatar + Posted by Dylan Jobe on Aug 25, 2008 // President, LightBox Interactive

So I’ve been dropping hints for a few months now on the blog and finally, at Leipzig Games Conference this week, we unveiled our third expansion for the Warhawk Universe — Operation: Fallen Star.

The sweet, sweet hotness that is the Icarus Mk.1 Rocket pack and once you’ve played it, you wonder how you ever played Warhawk without it!

Normally we announce stuff here in the States but we thought since Warhawk has a global player base, lets show it at Leipzig first this time.

Before I answer some of the questions that I’ve seen from the past couple of days, let me give you all a rundown of what’s included in Operation: Fallen Star.

FallenStar_11

There is an entirely new level – Tau Crater! It’s a smoky, forested island that features lots of vertical elements to give players tons of cools places to use the jetpack; huge trees that you can fly up into and land on their branches, an enormous recovery crane with lots of trusses and platforms to fly around, and of course, the name sake, a truly gargantuan capital ship wreckage smashed into the ground forming, you guessed it, Tau Crater.

FallenStar_03_SMALL

The capital ship is fully traversable meaning you can use the jetpack or other aircraft to fly up to its various surfaces, pipes, and destroyed sections. Hop out, use them to recon the other bases, snipe, call-in a binoc strike, whatever.

Around the crater are salvage platforms that have been constructed and serve as some of the bases in the Tau Crater. There’s also a huge fiery hole in the middle of the wreckage that you can climb though as a troop to quickly cross from one side of the level to the other.

FallenStar_05

There are massive chunks of wreckage scattered around the level and the recovery efforts at these locations are bases as well.

Tau_Map

In total there are 10 new layouts for Tau Crater and since the jetpack is a massive, game-changing addition to Warhawk, we included a crap-ton of bonus layouts for the original game too — there are 30 bonus layouts that add jetpacks into the Warhawk’s original content.

TC_Mission_CriticalTC_West_CoastTC_Tug_of_WarTC_Eastern_ShoreTC_Direct_AssaultTC_Crater_ClashTC_Heavy_LiftingTC_On_the_DeckTC_Holed_UpTC_Under_Fire

And yes, of course the jet pack can be used with both of the new free game modes that we released with the v1.4 Update. Jetpack Collector mode is awesome!

Now the jetpack itself is big departure from the way we normally do vehicles and this was very, very intentional. With each of our Booster-Packs, we specifically look for mechanic changing ways to freshen-up the game — and Operation: Fallen Star is no exception.

So here’s the run-down on the jetpack…

Icarus

First off, the jetpacks are equipment that the salvage crews are using to work on the wreckage so the style of it is very much like the equipment you might see at a construction site. This is true for the Daedalus Rapid Assembly Device (D-RAD) as well. Think of it as a vending machine for jetpacks. One of our players on the Warhawk forums asked if it was like a “hot-dog-stand”…well, yes it kinda is :-)

You run up to the Daedalus and then press SQUARE to grab a jetpack off the rack, like you would to mount a vehicle or turret. The Daedalus then begins its automated construction process and makes a new jetpack for another player to grab. This construction period helps control the balance of the game so that not every single troop always has a jet pack.

Daedalus

Now to help protect against brutal base camping, we opted to not have the vending machine, err….the Daedalus be destructible. In some of our early play sessions, it just was too easy to ravage the other team if you could destroy the Daedalus.

The Warhawk forums also wondered if a jeep could drive the vending machine around, sorry, the answer is no. We spent a lot of time tuning the placement of each of the vending machines and towing them around the level would have introduced some pretty brutal exploits.

FallenStar_04_SMALL

You can also mount other vehicles if you have a jetpack. So you and your team can coordinate fast strikes with the 4x4s and then all jump-jet out to make a flag run or scoop-up a team’s cores. If you have jetpack equipped, you are also allowed use it like an ejector seat and bail out of our Warhawk or Nemesis if you get into a dicey situation. Another great tactic is to use the Warhawk and run fly-by at the enemy base then have your buddy in the passenger slot bail out with the jetpack.

FallenStar_15_SMALL

The controls for the jetpack are really easy too and operate the same as any other vehicle in the game so it should feel really natural to start using one.

R2 is the thrust button. Press it to engage the jets and your character will be carried higher and higher into the air. While you’re flying, use the analog sticks to move around. You can let off the thruster button to disengage the thrusters and your character will begin to drop towards the ground.

If you are flying around and you need to focus on combat and not thrust control, all you have to do is hold L2 and the jetpack will automatically emit enough thrust to maintain your current altitude. This way you can focus on raining death from above :-)

The jetpack also has a boost-dodge feature, similar to the afterburner for the aircraft. Simply double-tap R2 to engage the boost-dodge. The direction of the boost-dodge can be performed in any direction, backwards, forwards, side to side, even straight up depending on which direction you are pressing when you dodge.

FallenStar_08_SMALL

Now this feature not only is a great way to get around the battlefield, but the “dodge” part of the boost-dodge is key for scrubbing missiles. There is only one missile in the game that can acquire a jetpack lock-on and that’s the troop missile launcher. So if you are up in the air and you see the missile warning pop-up on your screen, you better do a dodge, otherwise that missile is going to nail you! Now if you have a jetpack equipped but you are just running around on the ground, the missile launcher can’t get a lock on you…and this is another good way to help avoid getting hit.

Another question that our players wanted to know is if you can fly with the flag using a jetpack and the answer is yes. We took a lot of time to make sure all the traversal speeds were tuned just right and CTF and Collector mode are crazy fun with the Jetpack — hell, even just straight up deathmatch is way more fun!

FallenStar_02_SMALL

So here are some of the details: Operation: Fallen Star is being released on August 28th worldwide and is $7.99 in the Playstation Store. We also worked with SONY to get a new bundle pack ready too. The new Booster Combo Pack includes all 3 of the expansions for only $15.99. That’s like getting all 3 Booster-Packs for the price of only 2!!! Quick — deploy the wacky waiving inflatable arm-flailing tube men!!!

As a reminder, keep you eyes out for our FREE v1.5 Update that goes LIVE on August 27th!

So that’s it for now — I’ll do my best today to answer comments cause I didn’t get to at all with my last post cause I was crazy busy traveling for meetings. So let ‘em rip!

Oh, and one last thing, Kudos to 3 people (topodisc, mattnz, cubehouse) who were able to breakdown my crazy color-swatch-HEX-string-mythology-reference!

Rock on,

-dylan

Hey Dylan!

Great update, many thanks! cant wait!

Its nice of you to offer the new warhawkers a combo pack of all three expansions, but what about your “true” fans? The people that buy the expansion packs at the release dates, who support you, and are maybe the people that even made it possible for you guys to create new content.

Ex: Myself (as many others), have bought the two latest game packs. Now I am buying the next pack @ thursday aswell – why cant we get a kind of a discount? While the new hawkers can just buy everyone of them for a cheaper price :/

Thanks for answear!

    Hi Neshy,

The team and I greatly appreciate your, and many player\’s loyalty. You buy expansions right when they come out and so when SONY releases a bundle of multiple boosters, it feels like SONY is giving a better deal to new players.

I know this will sound kinda crapy but…giving a good deal to new players and getting them into the Warhawk Universe is intentional.

Making you feel bad certainly is not good and *not* the goal at all…but giving new players an easier entry point is. Its kinda the same reason why we added the training tutorials .. they benefit new player *far* more than hardcore players. It\’s not that we don\’t care, quite the contrary, You hard core players are still the reason we develop FREE updates and boosters. But its just that we\’re at a time in Warhawk\’s life-cycle that we need to reach out to new players as well.

Its just the way business is sometimes.

    Hope that makes sense.

so does this mean that by getting in a plane and jumping out, you can have unlimited amounts of jetpacks?

or will it still be restricted and how will that work??

Once you get a jet pack, you have it until you die.

If you respawn, you will need to go get one from the vending machine, err….D-RAD.

Dear Dylanger,

Thanks for the continued support of a great game.

Out of curiosity how long do you guys actually plan to keep updating this game for, or is this maybe the last set of updates : (.

If you were to update anymore my only suggestion would be to give us some new character customizations. Is there a reason you guys never gave us that?

Other than that this game is perfect. Thank you Incognito

The executives at the SONY Santa Monica studio make the call on the products we develop.

As far as additional character customizations, that sure would be sweet! But, as you know we have a finite amount of memory to work with. Having Warhawk support the core game *PLUS* a booster pack eats up a huge chunk of our reserver memory that we set-aside.

So…chances are that we wont be adding any more character customizations. Sorry :(

Dylan, I had sort of a neat idea for a new game mode. How about a “you only live once” strategy. Who ever is the last of the team to survive wins 100 points. How cool would that be? Everyone would be super cautious, and you’d make more real life decisions on how to go about things, rather than just blowing everything up.

Great update Incognito

Couple of questions:

1. Will you be updating the buddy list to 100 since alot of my WH buddies I can’t find in game anymore.

2. Will we ever get a badge for the APC/DS/Wrench/BFG?

3. Will the ranking up system get sorted as I’m a Command Marshall, my stats tell me i’m a major and every game I get recommended for air marshall but never rank up. I’m also not receiving badges/medals in official servers but am recieving them in player ranked servers.

Can’t wait to see what tricks you have planned for us yet. Hoping you might eventually make some of the booster free once they reach there first birthday (ie – OD free in november/december maybe…….)

What’s up Dylan? First, just want to say thank you for all the hard work and dedication that you and the team have put into Warhawk so far. After 700 hours of play, I can certainly say Warhawk is the crown jewel of my PS3 crown. I can’t wait to see what the future holds, both for Warhawk and that new game rumor that continues to take on a life of its own.

My question to you is this: Have you read anything about the inclusion of bots into Killzone 2′s multiplayer?

http://ps3.ign.com/articles/902/902019p1.html

As the article mentions the inclusion of bots, “will serve a number of helpful uses, including acting as a good practice target during offline play.”

The reason I ask, is because I think bots would be a great addition to Warhawk at some point in the future. What I see is a time 5 or 10 years down the road, possibly even in the earliest stages of the PS4, where I would love to go back and experience Warhawk again. I would love to have the ability to set up a deathmatch round with some bots, sort of along the lines of Twisted Metal, or play a CTF game with some bots with the ability to select what difficutly level the bots would at. Whether that be rookie, veteran, skilled, etc.

I honestly don’t know if this is even possible, but I think it would be such an awesome addition to Warhawk.

Can’t wait for Thursday and the jetpacks, and can’t wait to see what else you and your talented team have in store for the future!

one thing I’d like to know, will the “D-RAD” be destroyable? I can just see these being a little too noob friendly if the entire other team manages to get jetpacks.
Also I thinking the bailing out of hawks is a terrible idea for the pilots, I dont want to waste a homing and a swarm or two just for him to jump out no worse for wear. If I lose all my health a2a then that guy deserves a kill.
Apart from that everything is sounding good, big thumbs up for all the effort you guys put in, but I for one will be avoiding FS servers until I get some confirmation.

I really hope we get some small layouts such as fortress!

Also what time is the patch going live on Wednesday? And what time is the Booster going live Thursday?

(Sorry if you mentioned any of that in the post, I’m half asleep lol)

Sounds cool getting into a jeep while a jetpack then just flying out of it :D
But ejecting from a plane? That means when you’re about to kill someone they’ll just get out.

Thanks a lot, Max.

After we bring the servers back online after 8am Pacific, you all will be good to play.

Technically speaking, the v1.5 Update will go LIVE at 2am Pacific and you can download it then…but you wont be able to play until we bring the global server set back up.

    Good question!

The Jetpack always gives a bit more falling damage protection but if you were really high up in the air when you disengage your jetpack engines, and then fall all the way to the ground, you will explode on impact.

You can always re-engage your engines and help decelerate but if you\’ve been in free-fall for too long, you\’re SOL.

And no, you do not take damage if you boost into a wall :)

Currently there are no big new features for Clans in the works. There is a really great tournament XML feed that will be accessible to the public so any player(s) can host tournaments…but the network team in San Diego is still working on it. Once we have more info I\’ll post an update

And I hate to be the barer of bad news but the \”hardware-2\” rumor was just that…a rumor. The team and I are not collaborating with Studio Liverpool on that game. Not sure how that rumor even started, and then picked up by that blog in Europe.

Hi Dylan,

i just wanted to know, what is happening with the Web Based Warhawk Statistics/Leaderboards ( http://stats.us.playstation.com/Warhawk/PlayerDetails.aspx )

I just ask as over in the Official EU PlayStation Forums, i am the organiser of our own Warhawk Leaderboard which is Stat Padder free, and we Reward the Best Rankers of The Week.

The only problem is that the i rely on the Stats from the Web Site, but they rarely update, a lot of people are missing thousands of points, as there is such a huge gap with what the Game says and what the Web Site says.

I often find it updates in the early hours of a Sunday Morning (GMT), but not everyone gets updated.

p.s. its not a Browser issue as i have had 3 different people telling me they have the same results i have.

Any input would be greatly appreciated :)

I saw on your twitter feed that you picked new music for the front-end of Warhawk v1.5. Is that for the main menu or for the trailer only?

“Worked on the tag icon for the 3rd booster pack. Picked new music for the frontend for the v1.5 Warhawk update. Terrain textures tomorrow. 12:08 AM July 23, 2008 from twitterrific”

It was for the game front-end / shell. We like to change the music when we release an update…makes things feel fresh when you boot the game.

# Is there unlimited fuel? Or some fuel gauge… maybe you can spend the whole game hovering (and sniping in some way out place).
# What is the respawn time for the JP generator?
# When in hover mode, do you show up on radar the entire time or only when you use a weapon?
# How effective is the auto-aim on someone in hover mode.. auto-aim with hawks right now is pretty sad.
# Can you activate the JP while in mid air.. ie. you drive a jeep off a cliff, dismount, and activate the JP
# Is the JP part of the backpack when you get killed? ie. can you pick up other ppl’s JPs
# Do you take direct hits while in hover mode?.. or does the damage happen to the JP?
# Do you need to be a certain height off the ground before being able to disengage the JP (like with the hawk right now)… otherwise, you can make for quick decents instead of having to hover slowly down.

Coped from a thread from the PSU forums.

    Here are some answers:

    >> No fuel limit, just a boost limit like the Warhawk\’s afterburner meter.

    >> Cant remember the exact respawn/construction time for the Daedalus…I think its 5-6 seconds.

    >> You show up on radar as soon as you jetpack fires-up.

    >> Troops still get auto-aim assistance shoot with a jet-pack and while shooting at a troop with a jetpack. If you are hovering over a base and not boost-dodging and moving around, the ground troops will be able to rip you up.

    >> YES, you can activate the JP in mid-air. Bailing out of a 4×4 just to jet away is awesome.

    >> Jetpacks are not included in the backpacks because the explode when you die. So you can\’t get a jet pack of another player\’s dead body.

    >> You take direct hits/damage while using the JP.

    >> No, you can disengage the JP at any height above the ground. And yes, this means you can sometimes plummet to your death.

Does an air mine have the same affect on a jetpacker that it has on a plane?

Airmines will detonate if you fly near them with the Jetpack.

And the proximity fuse on the flak turret shells also detonate near airborne jetpacks.

First of all thank you very much Dylan, you are going to make us some happy Warhawkers!

Dylan, Can you pitot a plane, and drive a jeep while wearing a jetpack?? also

If you kill someone wearing a jetpack can you steal it off their dead body or do they disapear??

I am really looking forward to the trophy, but seriously its going to take longer to get a few of them than it did to get the platinum trophy in Drake. I though the trophies were supposed to have an equal difficulity from one game to another.

You can pilot a plane, drive a 4×4, and mount any vehicle or turret just like normal.

You can\’t get a jetpack off a dead body like you do when you get weapons from a fallen enemy\’s backpack.

And yes, some of our trophies are on the tough side…but hey, some are damn easy to. And since some of the are retroactive, you may have already earned some. :)
