Warhawk Operation: Fallen Star

So I’ve been dropping hints for a few months now on the blog and finally, at Leipzig Games Conference this week, we unveiled our third expansion for the Warhawk Universe — Operation: Fallen Star.

The sweet, sweet hotness that is the Icarus Mk.1 Rocket pack and once you’ve played it, you wonder how you ever played Warhawk without it!


Normally we announce stuff here in the States but we thought since Warhawk has a global player base, lets show it at Leipzig first this time.

Before I answer some of the questions that I’ve seen from the past couple of days, let me give you all a rundown of what’s included in Operation: Fallen Star.

There is an entirely new level – Tau Crater! It’s a smoky, forested island that features lots of vertical elements to give players tons of cools places to use the jetpack; huge trees that you can fly up into and land on their branches, an enormous recovery crane with lots of trusses and platforms to fly around, and of course, the name sake, a truly gargantuan capital ship wreckage smashed into the ground forming, you guessed it, Tau Crater.

The capital ship is fully traversable meaning you can use the jetpack or other aircraft to fly up to its various surfaces, pipes, and destroyed sections. Hop out, use them to recon the other bases, snipe, call-in a binoc strike, whatever.

Around the crater are salvage platforms that have been constructed and serve as some of the bases in the Tau Crater. There’s also a huge fiery hole in the middle of the wreckage that you can climb though as a troop to quickly cross from one side of the level to the other.

There are massive chunks of wreckage scattered around the level and the recovery efforts at these locations are bases as well.

In total there are 10 new layouts for Tau Crater and since the jetpack is a massive, game-changing addition to Warhawk, we included a crap-ton of bonus layouts for the original game too — there are 30 bonus layouts that add jetpacks into the Warhawk’s original content.

And yes, of course the jet pack can be used with both of the new free game modes that we released with the v1.4 Update. Jetpack Collector mode is awesome!

Now the jetpack itself is big departure from the way we normally do vehicles and this was very, very intentional. With each of our Booster-Packs, we specifically look for mechanic changing ways to freshen-up the game — and Operation: Fallen Star is no exception.

So here’s the run-down on the jetpack…

Icarus

First off, the jetpacks are equipment that the salvage crews are using to work on the wreckage so the style of it is very much like the equipment you might see at a construction site. This is true for the Daedalus Rapid Assembly Device (D-RAD) as well. Think of it as a vending machine for jetpacks. One of our players on the Warhawk forums asked if it was like a “hot-dog-stand”…well, yes it kinda is :-)

You run up to the Daedalus and then press SQUARE to grab a jetpack off the rack, like you would to mount a vehicle or turret. The Daedalus then begins its automated construction process and makes a new jetpack for another player to grab. This construction period helps control the balance of the game so that not every single troop always has a jet pack.

Now to help protect against brutal base camping, we opted to not have the vending machine, err….the Daedalus be destructible. In some of our early play sessions, it just was too easy to ravage the other team if you could destroy the Daedalus.

The Warhawk forums also wondered if a jeep could drive the vending machine around, sorry, the answer is no. We spent a lot of time tuning the placement of each of the vending machines and towing them around the level would have introduced some pretty brutal exploits.

You can also mount other vehicles if you have a jetpack. So you and your team can coordinate fast strikes with the 4x4s and then all jump-jet out to make a flag run or scoop-up a team’s cores. If you have jetpack equipped, you are also allowed use it like an ejector seat and bail out of our Warhawk or Nemesis if you get into a dicey situation. Another great tactic is to use the Warhawk and run fly-by at the enemy base then have your buddy in the passenger slot bail out with the jetpack.

The controls for the jetpack are really easy too and operate the same as any other vehicle in the game so it should feel really natural to start using one.

R2 is the thrust button. Press it to engage the jets and your character will be carried higher and higher into the air. While you’re flying, use the analog sticks to move around. You can let off the thruster button to disengage the thrusters and your character will begin to drop towards the ground.

If you are flying around and you need to focus on combat and not thrust control, all you have to do is hold L2 and the jetpack will automatically emit enough thrust to maintain your current altitude. This way you can focus on raining death from above :-)

The jetpack also has a boost-dodge feature, similar to the afterburner for the aircraft. Simply double-tap R2 to engage the boost-dodge. The direction of the boost-dodge can be performed in any direction, backwards, forwards, side to side, even straight up depending on which direction you are pressing when you dodge.

Now this feature not only is a great way to get around the battlefield, but the “dodge” part of the boost-dodge is key for scrubbing missiles. There is only one missile in the game that can acquire a jetpack lock-on and that’s the troop missile launcher. So if you are up in the air and you see the missile warning pop-up on your screen, you better do a dodge, otherwise that missile is going to nail you! Now if you have a jetpack equipped but you are just running around on the ground, the missile launcher can’t get a lock on you…and this is another good way to help avoid getting hit.

Another question that our players wanted to know is if you can fly with the flag using a jetpack and the answer is yes. We took a lot of time to make sure all the traversal speeds were tuned just right and CTF and Collector mode are crazy fun with the Jetpack — hell, even just straight up deathmatch is way more fun!

So here are some of the details: Operation: Fallen Star is being released on August 28th worldwide and is $7.99 in the Playstation Store. We also worked with SONY to get a new bundle pack ready too. The new Booster Combo Pack includes all 3 of the expansions for only $15.99. That’s like getting all 3 Booster-Packs for the price of only 2!!! Quick — deploy the wacky waiving inflatable arm-flailing tube men!!!

renting is not an option for me. i refuse to give me monies to companies like blockbuster or hollywood video. they charge way to much and offer little time in exchange. i rent blu-ray from netflix, lower cost vs the big (?) boys.
besides, renting defeats the purpose. if i don’t like something i don’t wanna have any part of giving my hard earned dollars towards it. hence the demo question. demo = free, if i like i’ll get, if not i don’t want to have wasted more than my time on it. otherwise why not just out right buy it and return it for a huge loss, same loss i would see if i rented it.

Whenever i play split screen with my friends they are never able to stay alive for more than 10 seconds due to their lack of skill, compared to the other players. I think that adding in offline bots could realy add to the game. sorry if i posted this in the wrong place.

Still haven’t picked up the exapansion packs because I live in Japan, have an imported version and don’t have a US credit card to get them on the US store. Sony blocks international credit cards and won’t make PSN cards freely available. Looks like I will be missing out on this expansion too. A shame Sony cant get their act together.

Dylan, Please please PLEASE tell us if you ever see a future in implementing all three booster packs as one (Meaning maps with all three boosters integrated…like a dropship carrying an APC that has a guy with a jetpack in it) but seriously it would be fun to have APCs/jetpacks on the Omega Factory battlefield, and jetpacks on Vaporfield Glacier in addition to APCs (i honestly don’t like the dropship that much) and APCs/dropships on Tau Crater? I really think you guys should make maps that combine all three. I agree with a previous comment stating that you could simply take 5 servers that are always empty and replace them with “Premium” map rotations that implement all three bosters in the rotations.

With 1.4 you guys recently changed the rank up requirements for certain ranks. Well, they don’t work. Once you reach 110k with the award it will tell you you have ranked up to Major, but it doesn’t record in the stats. Unfortunately you still have to get the old reqs for the rank to “stick.”

I hope you guys can fix this.

I bought the first booster “Omega Dawn” pack but I never bought “Broken Mirror”. I’m definitely getting “Fallen Star”. I was wondering if you could get Sony to do a mix and match with the bundles. I don’t want to buy the bundle with all three boosters because I have “Omega Dawn”. Is there anyway you could get Sony to offer a Broken Mirror/Fallen Star booster pack? They already have a Omega Dawn/Broken Mirror booster bundle so I don’t think it would be a problem. Please Answer me Dylan. Thanks. :)

First of all I would like to say that I’ve been a veteran player of you alls game (WarHawk) since it first launched on the PS3, and it is, by far, the best online action game I have played since the PlayStation 2. However, I am a little concerned about the balance in this game.

I find it odd that a ground trooper only has a rocket launcher to battle warhawks when traveling to another location on foot or in close counters, which is sometimes necessary. Yet, the warhawks get chaffs to completely break these lock-ons rather easily, are too mobile to really lock onto up close, have stealth to avoid being locked, have afterburners to flee at incredible speeds, and have a large arsenal of weapons to obliterate an entire team with a single strike. It’s bad enough that it takes two direct hits to bring one of these things down with a rocket launcher, which only decreases your chances of survival before they empty their entire arsenal onto you – never mind several of them. Even the standard supply of ammunition it starts off with is enough to overwhelm a trooper carrying a complete package since nothing in that inventory is effective nor do they have a locking system prompt enough and with the range to even the odds a little. An example of this would be a warhawk using stealth to approach a base or trooper in broad view, switching to and delivering a guided missile or bomb onto it’s target, and using the afterburners to avoid being locked by anyone else as it makes its escape. During this time, you are lucky to get one shot off, and it doesn’t help any when rocket launchers re-spawn late, leaving other team members with nothing except for a rifle to aid you when on defense.

On too many occasions have I been in matches where team members could not leave the main base due to warhawks, sometimes seven to ten of them, patrolling and picking troops off on their own base in great numbers because they didn’t have no real, effective defenses to rely on when away from the turrets. There have even been instances where turrets were damaged or destroyed during a series of multiple air strikes leaving them to appear way too late before you can began defending your base once again. And if I may add, turrets have way too many blind spots (unable to target aerial machines waiting behind fixtures) when positioned in a specific area, and they are way too exposed on almost every stage to really rely on. I feel there desperately needs to be a balance. Warhawks are way too god-like.

I got to thinking about something that could create an equilibrium between ground troops and warhawks or tanks relatively well the other day, and I must say that it made a lot of sense and appears VERY effective even for the recruits but not to the point where it could be abused and grant that user any real advantage.

Ok, usually when a zone, base, or flag is being reclaimed, a trooper must either exit their plane (completely exposing their self) or set patiently in their vehicle until one of the above is captured. At about this time, an enemy warhawk(s) usually arrives on the scene, depending on where you are, emptying most of their inventory onto you with you having no real defense effective enough to fight them back – especially since your vehicle and yourself is usually too damaged by then. So your options at this point are normally straight forward: try to find shelter or commit suicide since trying to score a kill is obviously about a 10% chance. For this reason and this reason alone is why warhawkers aren’t afraid to approach and face off with a ground trooper, and it’s another reason spawning areas can be locked-up very quickly to a point where a trooper can’t obtain a weapon effective enough to somewhat control the situation.

Tanks are just as bad when a spawning area only has a machine or mounted gun, a sniper rifle, some grenades, and a jeep. On the other side of the road you have a few tanks headed your way. Here’s another case where the battle is lopsided – especially when you probably won’t even have a vehicle – let alone enough of them, to get you and your team from point A to point B.

A solution I believe would greatly benefit this game is an electric magnetic pulse hand gun (EMP) that shot grenades that could either be detonated at will or on contact of the target, which creates an explosion wide enough to TEMPORARILY shut down any mechanical object, given that an enemy intruder is inside, within the range of the blast. I’d imagine a blast covering a distance at about the range of an air mine or slightly larger when a warhawk crosses its path. So if a warhawk is over the water, it could very well plummet into it, pilot and all if caught in the blast. If over land, the pilot or driver of any vehicle still has a chance to continue fighting or fleeing but without their vehicle since it is temporarily disabled. For instance, those in tanks can remain in the tank and peek out through the top, but the cannon nor the tank itself is in service until the EMP blast wears off. Flag carriers are no different if they were looking to make a quick escape in a jeep. Rocket turrets are another, and the list goes on and on.

What this basically does is force the opposite team to work harder to achieve a set mission rather than cheesing their way to victory by camping out in fixtures or vehicles as spawning troops with a very limited, non-effective supply of weapons attempt to fight back. This can also provide spawning troops with transportation from the opposite team (fully loaded warhawks possibly) if they manage to defeat those members in battle before they can make it back to their vehicles once the EMP has worn off.

If nothing else, could you guys PLEASE, PLEASE at least consider a more effective solution for this game.

This booster pack looks awsome, but I am reluctant to purchase it because I still cant even get my promotions do go through sinse the last update. AS a captian when i should be a Major and every time I log on it says I have been recommended to major but never takes. I also have a very difficult time finding games anymore seems as noone likes ctf and the fast join agame seems to never find any. whhats up with that. and why dont promotions take effect anymore? How seemless will this addon pack itrigate with the currant build? will we have the same problems with the new rookie rooms an d will trophy support rewaed me for the 600 hours i already have in the game? will they actual work? If you have to research my levels the sign on is artson.

Quick question about the trophies Dylan. Does the elusive platinum trophy give any XP points at all to increasing your level?? I know after getting my platinum trophy for Uncharted, i didnt see any change in progress for my level, which tells me there isnt really any XP asigned to the platinum and that its more of a status symbol. Can you please confirm this??

I’m really stoked about FS and the new Trophy update. Hopefully it will bring alot of people back to warhawk. Servers seem hard to fill up lately. I think it is mostly do to aggravation from the BT not working. I know several that have left b/c of this issue. I use to never have a issue filling my server now i can’t get outta pregame. But as always thanks for making warhawk awesome Dylan and thanks for looking into the BT issue.

Now my question is….most of us now have both the OD and BM booster and will now also have this pack, any chance at all we can get all the different vehicles, Dropship, APC and now Jetpacks on the same maps ?? Personally I think this would make an awesome game even better and I know that alot of us would love if if this would happen.

You have 3 segments of people:

1. Own no expansion. Can pay $15.99 for all 3 exapnsion

2. Only own Omega dawn right now. Has to pay another $15.98 to get the last two expansions by buying them separately

3. Own Omega Dawn and Broken Mirror. Either paid $11.99 or $15.99 already. After buying Fallen star, will have paid $19.98 or 23.98

Basically the only group of people who can’t get in on a bundle deal are early adopters who bought the original expansion. That tells us consumers to wait before buying anything.

The glitch is from captian to Major for several of my friends and we each had the 110,000 points before the update and sinse have not been awarded the promotion. Do we have to redo the actions again if so then why does the 2 pre condions stay checked? This is what several posters are wondering.

I’m pretty sure you guys over at Incog. are unaware that the Team Balance option is not forced in Player Ranked rooms. For some reason when you host a Player Ranked game you have the option to turn the Team Balance off. You guys really need to fix this ASAP!

The rank glitch for me is that since the last update I’ve been unable to get to my next rank. I have the point totals and the prerequisite to be an Air Marshall, but my rank continues to be stuck at Major.
