Day and Night Gameplay for Burnout Paradise

121 5

A big moment in Burnout history is just around the corner.

We’re working flat out to bring you yet another free content pack for Burnout Paradise – and this one’s the Bike Pack!

If you missed our recent posts, we’re trying something new with downloadable content this year. We want to completely change the game we brought you back in January with regular game changing updates. That means more than just a couple of cars and a new level.

For the first time in a Burnout game, we’re bringing you motorcycles. We’ve already talked about the 2 bikes available from Day 1 and some of the bike-specific gameplay that’s on the way, but there’s more to this pack than that. We’re introducing night time to the streets of Paradise City and with it, some unique gameplay.

Bike at night

When the pack arrives, just head for the nearest Junkyard and pick one of the bikes – either the Nakamura Firehawk V4 or the Nakamura FV1100.

Here’s a map showing Paradise City and all the different events you can try – Race, Road Rage, Marked Man, Burning Route and Stunt Run. For the full run-down on how these work, check out the video on our website.

CarMapssmall
Selecting one of the bikes triggers a whole load of new gameplay – 70 new challenges, 38 new against-the-clock races (Burning Rides) and new “Road Rules” record times for 64 streets – it’s like a whole new game to play through!

And if that’s not enough, once the sun sets at 8pm, the game changes.

The lights on the bike switch on, the traffic thins out creating an all new environment for high speed racing and we trigger some night-specific gameplay – half of the new Burning Rides take place at night and are called Midnight Rides.

Burning Ride Night
Here’s how the clock works:

From 8pm to 8am it’s night. We figured you’d want to decide how fast this comes around, so we made the clock customizable. You can easily switch between day and night and try out the different gameplay whenever you like. You can also control the speed of change – anything from 24 minutes to real-time (24hrs), if you’re up for an epic session!

If you play an online game, we automatically switch all players to the host time, fast forwarding through day or night as necessary. I swear you never get tired of seeing it!

We’ll be back with more next week – our final post before Bikes go live!

And as always, if you want more details, head to our own website – www.criteriongames.com

  • I recently bought burnout (as promised!), and I have not been disappointed! I find myself starting it up as soon as I get home from work. I vaguely remember you guys mentioning that there will be weather in this update too (or maybe a future one?) how will that work, or do you want it to be a surprise? I thought it might be fun if you could use the weather module you have on the news page to show the local weather in game. It would be fun to have a huge storm out and have it raining in my ps3 too, hehe.

Anyhow, great work! I’m anxiously awaiting my bikes!

    • Great to have you on board DarkWolf!

No surprises on the weather. We are indeed rolling weather into the bike pack, and we\’ll talk about it in next week\’s post.

We haven\’t focused on it just yet, because we\’re all about the \”game changing content\”. Everything we do this year is aimed at changing the experience you have in Paradise City, and the weather is purely visual at this stage.

      Does look absolutely awesome, though!

  • One word, WOW!!!

  • I would love a splitscreen for this game. It’s just like motorstorm with no splitscreen.

  • You guys should add 4 wheelers in Bournout to. ^-^

  • I can’t wait for the update. The idea of pulling off motorcycle stunts will finally get me over my PGR4 motorcycle racing envy. It’s just amazing how you guys continue to add to this game, I can’t remember any company doing anything like this. Cheers!

  • I’m drooling !!!!

Can I say “THE MOST supported (racing) game EVER!”

You guys are awesome! I can’t wait to see what Criterion has up it’s sleeve!

    :P

    • Thanks!

We\’re trying to make it the most supported game ever.

Hope you like this and all the upcoming updates!

  • Wow, this is cool. Does this game support my Logitech Driving Force GT racing wheel? If so, I’m sold…

    –Rick

  • Jez, this is awesome….. You guys have done so much with the game, so much time and dedication. There is only one thing I can say..

    BURNOUT TEAM ROCKS!!!!!!!

    • Hey bdude27!

Great to see you on the playstation blog!

      Burnoutteamdoesindeedrock!

More to come and in a couple of weeks, we\’ll finally talk trophies!

  • Buyed this game last week, loved it ( great price for 29.99 too )

  • What’s the exact date for this update?!?

  • Hi Jeremy/Criterion,

I love Burnout Paradise. I am seriously addicted to it. I was wondering…if EA have the license to make games based off of The Dark Knight or Batman Begins, is it possible for you guys to add “The Tumbler” as an aggression vehicle and the “Batpod” as a bike vehicle in a future update?

I had a vivid dream about this and it made me sick that it wasn’t true.

  • Sweet Marmaduke!

How is it, that in less than a calendar year, Criterion Games can provide multiple (major) updates that radically transform their game…and yet companies like EA Sports continue to deliver yearly editions of their sporting games that are indecipherable from the year before?

Has anyone tried the NHL 09 demo? I swear I can’t tell it apart from NHL 08…apart from having a new button that lets me lift people’s sticks. Lifting sticks for $60? No thanks. Feels a bit more like EA lifting my wallet.

Great work Criterion! I hope other companies follow your example.

  • Sweet.

I know I said I was waiting until the game was on PSN, but I couldn’t do it.

Bought it, brand new, a week ago! Can’t wait until the new update, but here’s a question. Will there be a separate licence for bikes, or does my class A licence still apply?

    • There\’s a seperate license for bikes and some new rewards for completing everything in it.

The map on this post is the way the game looks when you\’re on cars. Switch to bikes, and we switch to a new map and open up all the bike-specific gameplay and progression.

  • @61

    The weirdest part?

    Criterion are owned by EA.

  • I never really understand why people come to EVERY blog post and ask general SCEA questions that aren’t relevant to the topic at hand (it’s pretty annoying actually). I want trophies for other games too…and I want LIFE with PlayStation as well.

Jeremy isn’t here to speak on SCEA’s behalf. He’s here to talk about all the amazing things that the team at CRITERION is working on.

That said, Jeremy…this is, by far, one of the most involved I’ve seen a company with a product after ship. Updates that change the game, new vehicles, devoted support of the community…you’re going quite above the call of duty aren’t you? It’s almost like a CM in an MMO…paving new roads as it were for a racing game.

    • Thanks!

We think games changed with the arrival of Playstation 3.

We\’re changing the way we work to match. We\’re trying to think of Burnout as an awesome game service, rather than a disk we ship and then move onto the next.

We want to connect with you guys – the players – much more closely than ever before and keep changing the game to bring you the experience you always dreamed of.

This feels like the future of games, and we\’re going after it 100%.

  • Awesome, good job guys.

um….isn’t Life with Playstation supposed to making an appearence before the end of this month?

    just saying :p

  • Wow, when I first played the demo, I thought getting this game would be AWESOME, now this just confirms it :)

  • A friend of mine quit playing Burnout Paradise a long time ago and was looking to sell it. I wanted to buy it from him then, but he already traded it in. I guess I will have to pick it up new. Anyways, any idea on when it’s coming to PSN?

  • “You can also control the speed of change – anything from 24 minutes to real-time (24hrs)”

    thats brilliant, nice subtle touch.
any chance of big Harleys making it
to the game? would make for some fun
    competitions, crotch-rockets vs hogs.
anyway, keep it up, good job all around.

  • The funny thing is, that demo was a snapshot of the game as it was first released. It has evolved so much since then – you will not be disappointed.

  • Great job with the updates! Just one burning (no pun intended) question. Will there ever be a 2 player offline split-screen update? It is so much more fun to share the experience with friends in the same room!
The lack of this kept me from buying this game and going for one that supports it. I am currently adding 2 player offline games to my collection. I want this game but it will have to wait for now. So, please if you could provide an ETA that would be GREAT!

  • Jeremy Chubb I love Burnout Paradise, but will you be including an option to RE-MAP the controller buttons?

The right trigger causes me a lot of problems. It would be great if we could change accelerate and brake to X and square button as right trigger. Thanks!

  • Can’t wait, guys; you continue to impress with these updates and support and I love it and hope other devs take notice of how high you’ve set the bar.

Also, I can’t wait to sell my disc and have Burnout sitting on my HDD- any news on exactly when that’s going down?

  • I’m so happy I brought this game for PS3!

  • The only thing missing from this awesome game is a bonafide crash mode a la Burnout Revenge.

  • It blows my mind that you guys work for EA and have been putting all this stuff out for free.

  • BP should be re-reviewed, as whatever initial scores it received, should be increased by at least a point. This game needs to be played and I’m thinking it will see new life once it hits the PSN.

    Kudos guys!

  • Life with Playstation????

  • reson8er – that’s a really good point. In fact, that should be the case for any game with DLC, especially if it corrects an issue or adds new gamplay. I have told people that Warhawk and Burnout Paradise are no longer the same games I initially bought due to patches and booster packs.

  • this is a great addition to the game… i can’t wait for its content… any news about the two new island’s for the game yet?

  • Oh thank you, thank you, thank you, so much for the support Criterion! I would love to re-visit Paradise city at night!
But then I forgot, when is this update coming out?

    Did I say thank you!?

  • Well I won’t be able to try out the patch for at least 3 weeks, my PS3 needs to be exchanged, or maybe a firmware update comes up in the upcoming few days so that will restore my issues, but I doubt it :-(

  • This is exactly what i expect from the developer of one of my favorite game of all time (Burnout 3: Takedown). Keep up the good work guys!

  • Could you please put this on the PS Store like you did with the Cagney update on Xbox Live? It took a few hours to download the Cagney update and it couldn’t be done in the background. Put it up on the Store as well and we can download it in the background.

  • oh my freAKING GOD!

    I can not wait…..

    oh my freAKING GOD!

    ME WANT BIKES!

    oh my freAKING GOD!

    ME WANT TIME CYCLING!

    oh my freAKING GOD!

eh-ehhmm …. Yeah, this looks like fun.

  • I was never into burnout before so I never bought the game. I just finished reading this post and it sounds like Criterion Games is really working hard on growing this brand. Long story short I’m on my way out the door to purchase two copies along with the PS eye. One for myself and another for my little brother. Can’t wait to see the look on his face when I cross that finish line.

Anyways great job with keeping your consumers happy. And BTW that weahter changing thing someone mentioned earlier sounds like a GREAT idea. You should definately do that.

  • I was wondering if we will be able do keep using the same Save Data from the disc version with the PSN version of Burnout Paradise…. (?)

anyways, love the game, love PSB, keep up the great work! ;) can’t wait for the trophy pack xD

    greetings from Brazil :D

  • That’s really cool stuff… I really respect the dedication to your product, even if it isn’t a product that I own. In the interest of full disclosure, the game NEEDS an option to mute the radio announcer (he’s really awful) and, more importantly, a “Restart Event” option… or maybe once you try an event at least once that you can select it from a menu. Racing through traffic wasn’t something I was as fond of as more traditional racing models, but with an event select menu, I’d definitely pick this one up. Put simply, I buy a racing game to race, not to drive around looking for a race.

Even if you didn’t add it, weather effects — light rain, heavy rain, light snow and heavy snow and maybe some foggy conditions — would get me to drop my cash on this one.

Anyway, kudos on your dedication — the gaming industry needs more people / studios who give their products such loving attention.

And PLEASE consider including an “Event Select” option! It’d really make a difference and shouldn’t be even HALF the hassle of adding a day/night cycle. Thanks for your attention and time. Keep up the good work!

  • I’m actually really excited about Bike update and night driving. I recently picked up Burnout Paradise and have been playing a lot of it. Some people play Burnout for the crashes, but for me it’s all about the sense of speed, and Paradise has it in spades.

  • My buddies and I have got back into playing Burnout since the Cagney update. So awesome, I love the new look of the game and how the street times are integrated. Awesome game from an awesome developer. I can not wait to freeburn with my friends on Bikes. mind blowingly awesome. :D

  • MrSeptemberForever

psn cards will soon be sold at local 7-11 or at blockbusters soon as in……………september YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • MrSeptemberForever

just heard that news for anyone who cares.

  • Awesome guys. I can’t wait to play this. Thanks so much for your continued support to the Playstation community. You guys go above and beyond. A lot of developers would do well to learn from your example.

  • Not been playing Burnout that much lately, waiting for the trophy support, playing a lot more PJE and Uncharted in order to finish them, but will definitly dust off my copy of Paradise when this is released, I paid around 400 DKR for it nad so far this has given me a price pr hour of 3.5 DKR.

It is impossible to find a game anywhere that gives that kind of value per spend cent.

If you get a chance pick it up, this is definitly amongst the top 3 games for the PS3 system.

  • @ Jeremy Chubb:

Would you kindly give us a list of the trophies description this week?

Would you kindly add a “retry” option in Burnout Paradise?

Thanks again for the tremendous support for this game!

  • @ Jeremy Chubb:

One more thing, do you have any for Stunt Run? I’m doing really bad…

  • ^

One more thing, do you have any tips for Stunt Run? I’m doing really bad…

  • Woohoo!!! Another pointless update about a game little to nobody gives a damn about! Just what I wanted? What the heck man?

Novastrike….supposed to receive a patch within the next few weeks? Well to me few means 2…at the MOST!

  • Sounds good! Thanks for the answer.

  • PS: release the disk and move on with this one please! and then try to focus your energy on a good game for once, instead of this mutant offspring of a racing game..

its well NOT worth the price! good job!
