PLAYSTATION Store Video Content Update

Posted by Grace Chen // Senior Manager, PlayStation Store

Since the introduction of movie & TV shows on the PLAYSTATION Store, we’ve added hundreds of new pieces of video content for purchase and rental. As new items are not tied to the weekly PLAYSTATION Store updates, we’ve chosen this time slot to let you know what’s new so you can make a more informed choice for weekend entertainment.

This week we’ve added new video content from the following television series:

  • Everest: Beyond the Limit
  • Family Guy
  • Gene Simmons: Family Jewels
  • How I Met Your Mother
  • It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia
  • LA Ink
  • Land Of The Giants
  • Miami Ink
  • My Name is Earl
  • Mythbusters
  • Prison Break
  • The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack
  • Trinity Blood
  • Weaponology
  • Xam’d: Lost Memories (There’s a brand new episode every Tuesday!)

As well as the following feature films:

  • Fool’s Gold
  • King Arthur
  • Reign of Fire
  • Stay Alive
  • The Eye
  • The Water Horse: Legend of the Deep
  • Unforgiven

And since many of you seemed to enjoy reading what everyone else is watching, here are our top 20 movie and TV downloads for the week:

Woot! I love how you add ep’s and Movies so quick.
Now, Sony, you’re doing something right. :D

52

Ravn  |  August 1st, 2008 at 5:28 pm

A sweet deal…

…for Americans that is. Well at least Sony isn’t charging for the Online Service like MS and then give us a stripped service at a higher price.

Lets hope Europe gets its turn eventually… until then, as David Reeves suggested – Bittorrent it is…

Jenovah  |  August 1st, 2008 at 5:29 pm

Come on! lets get Xam’d back on top :)

As far as the expiration of the videos I don’t think the 24 hours period will change. You might be a working adult or a student, but watching the movie within 14 days is more than enough time to get to it and watch once or twice, within the 24 hours of when you first start watching it.

If you can’t watch it you shouldn’t have downloaded it to begin with or you just have short attention span. Unless future video encodes can be changed I wouldn’t hold my breath. One thing I hope changes is the availability of HD movies to download and store. (because apprently we can’t copy the movies onto our PSP, unless it’s the SD version)

El Distruto  |  August 1st, 2008 at 5:32 pm

Sony why is the stay alive SD rental $9.99???
the other SD movies are $2.99

jpwilson25  |  August 1st, 2008 at 5:35 pm

Hi Grace (and Abigail),

Are there any plans to expand the available rentals for existing movies? An example would be “21 (2008)” — there are several movies in the store that I would like to rent but have no plans to purchase. Thank you in advance.

57

KazeEternal  |  August 1st, 2008 at 5:37 pm

Um Grace, thanks for updating us on well the store update it’s much appreciated. However most of that stuff has been in the store for awhile. I think outside of the Eye and maybe one of those other films I’ve had access to the others for awhile.

QUESTION: Any word on grouped downloads for TV shows? I’d really like to buy full seasons of Family guy for the same price or less than the boxset from the PS Store.

Poseidon44  |  August 1st, 2008 at 5:37 pm

Can we please have some more HD Rentals? Seriously though…

To #50

Yo, I’m from Puerto Rico, and I get the Video store! At first I didn’t but a little later after E3 the Video section came up, no problem.

erico316  |  August 1st, 2008 at 5:40 pm

i want to know Xam’d: Lost Memories can we buy the eps to keep?

61

blkant  |  August 1st, 2008 at 5:44 pm

Please work on getting more anime and please work on getting the rest of the futurama seasons =)

62

NinjaZeroEight  |  August 1st, 2008 at 5:44 pm

I hope Canada will get the video store soon, I really want to check out X’amd.
It was really surprising that we didn’t get one when the U.S did since we share the same game store as the U.S.

Captain Fury  |  August 1st, 2008 at 5:50 pm

@50

its up already

64

maulok  |  August 1st, 2008 at 5:50 pm

Quick question – any chance of a subscription option in the future? Like a season pass on Tivo where the PS3 will automatically download the newest episode of prison break as it’s released for example? That would be fantastic!

65

GGCAN  |  August 1st, 2008 at 5:53 pm

Glad to hear you mentioning Canada is in this plan…

If we have more winters like this past year….Sony I think would make a fortune on people downloading movies in Canada instead of venturing out into the mounds of snow.

66

stennex  |  August 1st, 2008 at 5:54 pm

I wonder if Sony is going to have a Netflix type of instant movie access as well. M$ Netflix deal still requires xboxlive members to pay for the membership or already be a member of Netflix. If Sony had a similar feature without Netflix being apart of it i would not mind at all. Also if it was free but had maybe one or two ads running before the movie starts i would not mind at all. I know money has to be made. I also believe that us PS3 owners will get Netflix but it probably will be incorporated into Home.

cmargary  |  August 1st, 2008 at 5:57 pm

@50

Yep… it come a little later but we have the video store now. You have to click in video in the upper tabs where game and video tabs are.

68

tdh  |  August 1st, 2008 at 6:05 pm

Just out of curiosity, could you guys provide how many times each of those Top 20 are being downloaded. Kind of have no reference to know just how popular it is.

Personally the rental model isn’t priced competitively or conveniently for me to make use of it. Paying up to $6 for 24 hours, makes driving to the video store more affordable even with the price of gas these days.

And to reiterate, please make some of these episodes downloads available for download. I would have purchased the Xam’d episodes if they were available to buy. So I could watch all of them in a row on my time.

Remember about Europe!

73

Skerj  |  August 1st, 2008 at 6:23 pm

I REALLY want to support this thing but those prices man. Are there any plans for sort of a Netflix-esque flat rate subscription service? Also any word on when Xam’d will be available for purchase and NOT rent?

I know you European people don’t have an official Playstation blog but come on this is SCEA they don’t know whats going on in Europe. So stop asking about the video store and everything. Microsoft just recently put there video store in Europe and it took over a year so be patient! Please go bother threespeech with your problems with SCEE! Not the US Playstation blog!

77

Money1  |  August 1st, 2008 at 6:40 pm

Xam’d:lost memories is a great anime, altough I do agree with the other person on here saying you should add dragon ball anime. maybe some air gear or full metal panic? what about blue seed? I expect to see more tv shows and movies, etc. What about distributing wrestling videos like tna or wwe?

78

MikeG115  |  August 1st, 2008 at 6:43 pm

hey guys, i really appreciate the effort you guys are putting forth but there’s a few 3 things you guys need to do to make this a great product.

#1 – the price of the tv shows are WAY too expensive. i bought 3 shows so far but that was merely to show my support for the new service. how can a 15 min so like Robot Chicken cost just as much as the hour long tv shows, and $1 cheaper than some of the movies for rental? i feel no tv show should cost more than $1. and that’s still alot for some but at least it it would be fair……fairer (if that’s a word) LOL

#2 – the movies should all cost the same for rental. whether they’re new releases or not. same for buying. i can see you guys charging a little more for HD content, but not just because something is a new release. Blockbuster doesn’t even do that.

#3 – some movies are for buy only. why would you limit the potential for income by doing that. especially since you charge so much more for some.

i bought 3 tv shows and rented 2 movies so far, but i doubt i will be getting anything else anytime soon until you guys adjust these issues. i know you guys have alot on your plate but these are issues that i’m sure would be worth your attention.

Juno FTW! Just rented that on iTunes. Yes, iTunes. The only reason because the PSN store isn’t in Canada, yet. Awesome movie btw.

Sakimori_X  |  August 1st, 2008 at 6:58 pm

WOW. So much new content! “Land of the Giants”? “Lost in Space”? Are you freakin’ KIDDING me?!! How am I supposed to hold on to my money?

Kudos to Sony for making this possible. And a special ”thank you” to the guys at FOX, who’ve posted so much great TV content.

@people complaining that the store is not available in Canada

Your country’s copyright/licensing laws are far more complex and difficult to get through than the United States’. Sony’s not shafting you for the heck of it. Because of the way your country’s laws and approval system is set up, it takes longer to get stuff approved.

@people complaining that the store is not available in Europe

First of all, each country has different copyright laws and regulations and there are about ten different languages. Also, Sony has to sign seperate deals with each of the movie studios for each country the service is going to be launched in and, for obvious reasons, Sony won’t want to launch the service in only a few countries and not others. I really do feel bad for you guys, but until you can agree on a centralized government and a single language, you are going to continue to get shafted.

agenttrav  |  August 1st, 2008 at 7:36 pm

Can we PLEASE get the ability to re-download videos we’ve already purchased (just like all other PSN media). I replaced my hard drive, thinking I could just re-download the movies I had already purchased. Not the case apparently. Xbox 360’s video service allows re-downloading…why wouldn’t PSN?

87

r-nice  |  August 1st, 2008 at 7:47 pm

You people make some dumb comments.

Why would they break the news of when the Video Store is going to expand to other territories in the PlaystationBlog comments section!?!

88

skynidas  |  August 1st, 2008 at 7:48 pm

Thanks Grace!

Will there be subtitles or closed-captioning on videos in the future? The deaf and hard of hearing are unable to use this service without them.

90

AranhaHunter  |  August 1st, 2008 at 9:14 pm

When I click on “New Arrivals” I see the same old movies and TV Shows. Likewise when I click on “TV new Arrivals” and “Movies new Arrivals” I see the same old content….what gives?

Also please give us the option to purchase whole TV show seasons (A lot of episodes missing on a lot of shows). A monthly subscription is highly wanted. More previews for movies, more options on the movies to buy/rent/hd rent (a lot of movies only have one of these options, very few have all 3 options).

And more updates, when I look at the iStore and the XBL marketplace…..well to put it nicely the PSN video store is way behind in terms of content.

91

un4gvn94538  |  August 1st, 2008 at 9:15 pm

the video store needs to have some changes before im willing to use it. all movies need to have 5.1 surround at least, and movies need to specify audio and resolution.

92

Cplhicks  |  August 1st, 2008 at 9:23 pm

More HD content please! I don’t want to rent in SD. Let’s see some of these newer movies, Like Aliens vs Predator (example) in HD too! I mean, a lot of Sony’s movies are purchase only! There should be more options for everything. But basically, at this point, I only want to see the HD stuff…

93

cmargary  |  August 1st, 2008 at 9:26 pm

Yeah in season 3 of prison break that occurs… only 3 episodes.

Anyway I need captions in all movies and TV shows pleaseee… that’s the only thing that prevent me to buy all I can see lol.

94

gardea  |  August 1st, 2008 at 9:33 pm

Just wondering, but why aren’t all movies available for rental? And why can we only watch a movie rental once during the first 14 days of the rental and once more after the first 24 hours of the first viewing?

95

The PSVideoStore needs more cagney and lacey, golden girls, highway to heaven, touched by an angel, and murder she wrote.

us 80+ geriatrics don’t feel properly represented.

we are casual gamers!

Sony should make a game for seniors where your family comes to see you every week and everyone drives a reasonable 15 mph and everyone eats dinner at 4:00 and TURNS DOWN THAT DARN RACKET!!!…whew, i’m getting sleepy, time for a nap.
