PS3 Music Peripheral Compatibility Update

Posted by Michael Shorrock // Director of 3rd Party Relations, SCEA

Hi everybody, Michael Shorrock, here. I’m the Director of Publisher Relations here at SCEA. I work closely with all of the publishers and developers who create games for all PlayStation platforms. While SCEA had a ton of great announcements at E3, I’m excited to say, we have one more for today, one that I know a lot of you have been asking about:

For the past several months, we have been working closely with Neversoft and Activision, Harmonix and Konami to ensure that PlayStation 3 guitars and drum sets will all feature a basic level of gameplay compatibility.

For the most part, this means that the titles with musical peripherals will work with the other’s software. A few specific examples include: Guitar Hero: World Tour’s guitars and drums will work with Rock Band 2 and Konami’s Rock Revolution software.

And yes, you guessed it, Rock Band 2’s guitar and drum set will work with Guitar Hero: World Tour and with Rock Revolution.

Conversely, Rock Revolution’s drum set will work with both Guitar Hero: World Tour and Rock Band 2.

In addition, Guitar Hero: World Tour and Rock Band 2 will both support the SingStar microphones.

We’re still working hard to ensure compatibility between the Guitar Hero and Rock Band titles currently on the market, and we hope to have an announcement on that shortly.

Of course each of these great games have their own specific cool features that may not be compatible with the other controllers, but this is our first big step in bringing a level of compatibility to music games that is sure to benefit PlayStation 3 consumers.

Keep an eye out here for more information in the future.

Great! The developers/publishers may feel bullied when you come in asking for this type of cross-game compatibility, but in the end it is better for all of the companies involved because it provides a level of comfort that consumers can handle. With all the peripherals coming out on consoles these days it’s hard to find the cash and the storage space for all of it. Thanks for doing us all a huge favor!

They won’t release a patch…at least not until a few months after RB2 and GH:WT are released. You see: they WANT you to re-buy all their new guitars and drumsets.

oh thanks God….what is this, some kind of miracle?
I had to make a choice between rock band 2 (with the new instruments) or socom confrontation, but now i have enough money for both. You guys are amazing

This is good to hear… Would the microphone from RB2 be compatible with Singstar/2 for the PS3? Because they are yet to have wireless microphones so this would be VERY good news!

Great job, make sure these 3rd party companies treat PS3 customers fairly. Already spent 600 dollars on the system, now I have to rebuy instruments everytime a new music game is released. I don’t think so.

Thanks for your leadership in solving this problem.

p.s. lets get some PS2 periphreals workings with PS3. Beatmania, DDR pads, Lightguns, Taiko drom, etc.

Awesome, it is good to hear that Sony is telling these companies that they have to play nice with each other. Now please just get the Rock Band and Guitar Hero 3 instruments to work with the new games and I will keep buying them cause otherwise I will have to pass, I don’t have enough room in one house for more than one plastic recreation of a drum set, especially when I don’t have room for my real drum set.

I thought by the title I was going to read about how my PS3 will now be able to play songs directly off my iPod, yes I know one is Sony and one is Apple, but come ohn **spoken in Jimmy from Southpark voice** Sony you could have a disclaimer or graphic saying how much the iPod sucks when you connect it. Its an “entertainment” consol, it would rock even harder, think about it!!

Probably 20 people ahead of me asked about Rock Band 1 musical peripherals will work with GH world Tour. At The moment we know that Rock band 1 and 2 are compatible but if there is confirmation that it will be compatible GH will have another Bunch of my cash in there Pocket.

Rock on!!! It is awesome that cross- compatibility is finally happening for the PS3. The whole guitar compatibility issue was a major reason i have not purchased GH3 or RockBand.

Someone may have already asked, I didn’t want to read 160 posts. How will the this work? rock band’s orange button is the bass pedal, and GH has orange as a cymbal.I might be missing something here but, rock band essentially has 5 buttons (4 pads+bass) as opposed to GH 6 (3 pads+ 2 cymbals+ bass). I can see how GH could play rock band, but not the other way around. Anyone know the answer?

there’s something i dont get…

if the guitar hero drums have 5 “buttons” + pedals and the rock band one has 4 + pedals, how can the rock band one work with GH? isnt one button missing?

darthstrayder  |  September 10th, 2008 at 8:58 am

GH:WT will detect the Rock Band drums and alter the track for four drums instead of five.

I don’t know if anyone is still reading these comments but this is great news. I cannot possibly fit another set of guitars and drums in my house. I was actually debating skipping both of these titles. Now I have questions….Will the new instruments work with the original RB?
Is there any possible way to get a guitar to work on the PS3 with GH 1/2/80’s? I would love to be able to play these games on my PS3.
I hope someone is still reading these and will answer my questions. Thanks in advance:)
