Hi, everyone, I wanted to give you a heads up about PS3 firmware update (v2.43). Unlike previous updates, firmware v2.43 is specific to the Japan region, and only PS3 users there will be required to
install the update. PS3 users in all other regions will not be prompted to download v2.43. However, if you manually initiate a firmware update by clicking on “System Update” under the XMB’s Settings icon, the v2.43 update will be available, regardless of where you are located.
Users outside of Japan do not need to perform this update if your PS3 system software is on version v2.41 or later. However if you do perform the update, it will not cause any issues with your system or add any new functionality.
i think its a shame for sony to try to force folding@home to everyone that desires to have this service.this is my only complaint about it.why they didnt make the program separate from folding? i dont think thats fair for those of us that want to use the service but dont want to waste more energy when folding…because of this,i will not use the program because i dont have 150 bucks if my original 60 gb ps3 breaks nor have the money to pay higher electric bills….as for curing cancer thats a joke, i dont think you can cure cancer by just folding and even IF they were to get the cure for that disease it would take years to make it for the average consumer because of the red tape and also because the drug companies would want to still making money from less potent drugs and treatments or chemotherapy
if sony is so hell bent to cure cancer then why dont they donate 500 ps3 to that university so that they would fold all they want without they screweing the customer up…also, think about this we can already clone animals and measure the outer planet’s physical and chemical compositions but cant cure cancer?O_O
one last thing, dont you think that sony and standfor would get tax breaks for doing this crap…just a thought!

I don’t know if it’s Sony…it may be Stanford that has the Folding@Home application that is offering this Life application to Sony.
Maybe we’ll hear more from Sony on this when they do finally implement Life with Playstation.
Let’s stay tuned and see.

You don’t have to run it all the time….if you want to check out news and weather…get in and then out….no one is forcing you to do anything here.
life with playstation is out just download the new firmware then delete folding home and after u download folding home again life with playstation will download instead

You’re plain nuts dude. F@H does not harm the ps3. I have 223 WU completed on my launch 60gb PS3. I don’t think F@H has ever failed on me so far. I have had the internet browser freeze up, games freeze up, but never F@H.
You are basically saying, I want to read the news, check the weather, but not have a simple app running in the background conducting research to help find treatments/cures/causes of some of the biggest diseases in the world. (Alzheimer’s, Cancer, etc)
Give your head a shake! Maybe one day you or someone close to you will suffer from one of those diseases.

My first post on PS blog today as I take the matter really seriously.
I totally agree with Perrandy. SONY should NOT make F@H mandatory for those who want to use LwP.
1/ those software have nothing to do, and I really don’t think F@H Team as anything to do with LwP.
2/F@H is a fraud, exactly like Seti@Home. I mean, it’s fun to pretend to look for ET signals or cancer’s cure but let’s be honest, i’m not sure there is any result at the moment (and F@H is far from being a new program -i’ll be glad if someone could prove me wrong-
3/ Using F@H is FAR from being without effects on the hardware, like anything else. I’m not an expert, but using the CPU to calculate proteins or anything else. The more you use the PS3, the more it deteriorates (quite different from browsing internet cache)
I paid 400 euros for a PS3 with a pad and no game. I saved money for a long time to buy it and I like my PS3. I don’t want a so-called therapeutic software to ruin my game console because neither SONY or anyone else is going to buy me a new PS3 when it’s broken in 3 or 4 years and nobody can assure me at 100% that any electronic device will last that long.
You want to help F@H. Fine, that’s YOUR CHOICE, I’m glad you do it, but as a customer I WANT TO HAVE THE CHOICE
I want to save energy and reduce my energy bill, and I want to save as much as I can my PS3 and for 400 euros a system and 70 euros per game, I think I can have what I ask

if nobody complains, SONY will make no effort to communicate: it’s not hard to write 5 lines about HOME, even if it’s to deliver no-essential informations and 2 pictures, but it shows that there is some customer service.
We are proud and faithful customers and we deserve some attention.

Power bill… your nuts!
I have been running my launch 60gb PS3 24/7 since launch of Folding@Home I have never had a problem with anything including my power bill. If you can afford a PS3 you can afford the tiny amount of power it sips to fold 1 work unit then automatically shut itself off when it’s done.
However I am an advocate of freedom and liberty so you can do as you wish and who am I to tell you otherwise, however I may also state my opinions and facts as follows.
Running folding in the background of Life With PlayStation is a GREAT idea no one is forcing anything I am sure folding could probably be disabled from even running but with all the background help from Folding with LFP we can speed research years ahead of schedule. As for the other things you mentioned, testing on humans and cloning of humans is usually frowned upon so the best we have now is computer simulation.
We can cure cancer we are working on it Folding@Home. Obviously you don’t understand what Folding is and how it helps or how these crippling diseases work.
I agree drug companies are crooks but that shouldn’t stop research eventually it will become either covered by insurance or affordable to regular folks. If a cure is found by an institution such as Stanford I would think they would try to make the cure as widely available as quickly and cheaply as possible as a way to give back to all the “regular” folks that helped cure it.
By your logic you should probably stop coming to this blog because it’s to difficult to type and you may get criticized plus the cost on your power bill to start up your PC or internet browser on your PS3.
Sorry for going WAY off topic from the initial post but hey Thanks again for the heads up on the firmware and keeping us up to date on what’s going on so we know.

Just remember…you don’t have to use this application if you don’t want to.
No one is forcing you to use it.
However, Sony and Stanford university have decided to do this and many of us PS3 gamers are willing to go along with it.
There is plenty of other stuff on the PS3 you can do and if you really want the weather and the news….

Before people post how bad Folding@Home is, maybe read up on it a bit more.
When I read about it, they said they have a lab that has PS3s and are constantly running Folding@Home and it doesn’t damage the PS3.
People have to read a little bit more I think, before they start complaining here so much.
I can’t believe how much Sony is listening to us now as they realize the fanbase will make or break this console.
But give them some time; I’ve seen lots come out the past few months, so they are truely listening.

I’m not sure if this is the NEXT firmware update….but the blog that told us about the Socom headset was mentioning that a fw update was going to be applied for the headset to work.
Yeah most likely sometime before SOCOM or the same day as the release ^^

Just in case you curious people havent gone to the us.playstation.com support site to find out about 2.43, sony says:

The only problem was that last night, some people also got the LWP application by accident…nothing actually with 2.43 apparently, but due to many rumors about LWP…
this is how these blogs get carried away.
I know I’m using Folding@Home and have since I pretty much bought my PS3 and will continue with LWP and people can decide what they want to do.
I’m out of here for this evening and let the others out there be able to comment.
Just a few of the people don’t read anything, whine and complain about stuff and get me and many others really upset, because we just DON’T agree with them.
I’ll bet we’ll be seeing LWP very soon and an FW update in the very near future.

I seriously hope this lame update fixes the havok the was caused by 2.42 …. So many peoples blu ray drive failed after the 2.42 update.
Ive been waiting patiently for a fix. My PS3 is a launch PS3, been fine until 2.42. I can read some DVDs,ps2 games,but nothign blu ray.
And dont blame the blu ray laser….its way too coincidental that once 2.42 was installed a a huge influx of blu ray problems happend to many.
Why would i send in my PS3 along with 150 bucks to pay for something a Sony official update broke? Especially since I have a launch PS3 that worked perfectly fine, and is now obviously out of warranty.

wtf? The program would be running in the background so the consoles wouldn’t be using more energy than what it would use when using LWP. And it would only be active when you are reading whatever you want on LWP. You exit the program and F@H stops.
I mean its something you wouldn’t even see at all and it wouldn’t change how you use the PS3 either.

Its because its not available for anyone now. They released it prematurely. SO expect the update for LWP to come out within the coming weeks.
