Mega Man 9 arrives today on the PSN!

What a big day, huh? It has got to be the best week ever for the store. (Ro Hernandez told me to write that.)

I am honored to announce that Mega Man 9 will be available today on the PLAYSTATION Network for only $9.99. Our beloved Blue Bomber returns to his 8-bit roots in this 9th adventure of the original storyline. Here’s the rundown:

In the year 20XX, after the events of Mega Man 8, multiple riots have sprung up all over the world. Many people suspect that this is another plot from Dr. Wily. Dr. Light is stunned to recognize that some of the robots rioting on the TV screen are his own creations. Even more stunning, Dr. Wily appears on television to proclaim that Dr. Light is the evil mastermind behind these latest catastrophic incidents. Now, Mega Man must set out to stop the rogue robots and discover the truth behind the attacks. *SPOILER ALERT* (It really is Dr. Wily’s evil plot to rule the world. Shhhh!)

This project has really been a labor of love for all the hard core Mega Man fans. When I first read the game design doc for this project, I though this was some kind of joke. 8-bit graphics in this day and age? Intentional flickering and tearing? Extra difficulty levels? Whaaaat? When I started to really delve into this assignment and talk to hundreds of Mega Man fans, I began to understand that there is a certain affinity, a passion for this character. People would tell me their experiences with Mega Man 2 and how they had to sneak in play sessions to avoid their mom yelling at them for spending too much time with their NES. I started to feel better.

Inafune-san got it right with this game. This is his baby. He knew the importance of living up to the original series and how introducing “9” meant high expectations. He recruited a large team (yes that’s right), with the talent to pull this off. A team that knew what a pixel perfect jump meant. A team that understood the intricacies of classic level design, on how placing a certain enemy at a certain place would affect a person’s speed run strategy. A team that could compose an epic musical score within the limitations of 1980s technology. Try to pull off a Picasso with 4 crayons and you’ll understand that creating an 8-bit classic in this era is not an easy task. Play the game, or just try out the demo first, and enjoy the little details that scream “fan service”.

If this is the first time you’ll play a Mega Man game, you’ll understand why older gamers complain that games these days just aren’t as challenging anymore (Damn kids, jk). Be patient though and don’t throw your DualShock through your screen. I bet you’ll have a sudden itch to go back and try the level again. You’ll cuss, you’ll kick your dog and pick fights with your girlfriend. When you finally complete the level after the umpteenth time, you’ll finally realize the magic that is Mega Man.

On a side note, I know you’ll have a lot of questions, and I expect this thread to be pretty active. If I don’t get to your answers right away, it’s because I’m at the Age of Booty party introducing for the first time to the public, playable Proto Man (Horse armor, he is not). Talk to you soon!

Your friend from Capcom,
John D

thank you sir. you are a true innovator and a genius. remote play i don’t really care about because i don’t leave the house to sit in starbuck’s all day.

but copies of a game on my psp would be incredible.

  • so…earlier i commented that i would buy a great game for the game trophies or not.

and that i wouldn’t buy a mediocre game just for trophies.

so…to those who will be skipping mega man 9 because of trophies (retarded) guess what…for the same price you can get GEON EMOTIONS!

no disrespect to the Geon team but c’mon…mega man vs geon emotions? yeah right.

  • haay for the matter john iam a ture sonic the hedgehog fan and sonic is not a failer
and i will buy this game
mm9 rocks cool game worth more than 10$
but please respect sonic add me PSN ID Sonic-Boom

    • I respect Sonic. I\’ve actually worked on a couple games in my career. The whole point I was trying to make is that not all games should go the 3D route.

  • aww man. just watched the video again. i need a turbo controller. dualshock turbo 3!

SONY…UPDATE THE STORE ALREADY I CAN’T WAIT…I HAVE PEOPLE COMING OVER TO WATCH THE USC GAME (current grad student) AND PLAY WIPEOUT AND MEGA MAN…I NEED ALL THE HEAD START I CAN SPARE ON MY GAMING PEOPLE!!!

    sorry…coffee & red bull. :|

  • hey John…on a sidenote…how about getting some of those other mega man games one the psn?

  • alright John, all we need now is a trophy patch! (I know, I know, I’ve bug you so many times about it already lol.)

  • $10 is a bargain for a game that even comes CLOSE to the quality of the first six Mega Man games.

  • I’m a particularly a fan of 8 bit music. It takes a lot of originality to make music with noises :p. What will be the display resolution ? 480p ?

  • @149

thanks for the heads up dude. if thats true then i guess ill have to wait till 2 or 3.

    I NEED IT NOW!

    :(

  • Hey John! I’d like to say that the only classic Megaman game I’ve ever played was 8 and I really liked it. Will I like 9??

  • heheh, horse armor..

    nice one John D.!

looking forward to both age of boo-tay and mega man..

1942 and commando were great, still lovin both of those..great quick time killers!

thanks for answering so many questions, it is appreciated!

  • Thanks to it’s early release date and great D-pad. I’m convinced about getting this game for PS3.

Which doesn’t usually happen with multiplatform Download games.

  • this is an awesome day on PSN.
    WipeOut HD and MM9.
i dont really remember playing MM ever but i might of played it when i was a little kid.
i do know its a classic and might have to buy and DL it.
man im going to be broke this year.
this, WipeOut HD,SOCOM: Con., LBP, Motorstorm:PR, R2, and Valk. Chron.

  • nice, can’t wait to get this

  • I’m so glad capcom does not disappoint on the PSN, with 1942, BC:R, Puzzle Fighter HD:R, MM9, Commando: wolf of the battlefield and more on the horizon, they get all of my PSN money, seriously the only non-capcom game I’ve snagged prior to today(yay WipEout) has been PixelJunk Monsters!

Keep putting out the good stuff and I’ll keep buying it, I can’t wait for SF:HD been waiting for a long time. I just hope it comes out before SF4, wouldn’t want it to get overlooked :(

  • omg thank you capcom i thought it was just for the wii this week awesome.

  • Hey John

Add you on the PSN! My PSN is rockmanjoey! Any who, I shall be getting both Mega Man 9 and WipEout HD tonight! I reckon a cool DLC feature would be for MM9 gamers to create their own levels just like in Mega Man Powered Up! It would be awesome to trade levels! I wish to ask you questions.

I know that MM9 won’t have trophies but will SFHD Remix have them?

Any chance of some Capcom PSone Classics for the PlayStation Store?

University has started fine! The labs are pretty kick ass and I’m enjoying it!

  • This and WipEout HD are MINE…well…when the store updates. If this game doesn’t make me want to destroy something, I’ll be disappointed, though!

  • OMG! I’ve been refreshing the damn psn store far the last hour or so! come on sony release em! Don’t u dare make me wait till tonight!

  • I might pick MM9, I remember my MM2 days I dont know why but bubble man was my favorite, but I was more of a fan of the x series up until x5, that game and everything after that were just horrible. I hope now since capcom went 8-bit hopefully that would consider another X game or remake would be cool but the right way. I don’t know if I’m the only one but I liked Mega Man Legend and it would be cool if the made a Mega Man Legend/Megaman X type game that would sweet if done it the right way, or 16-bit would be just fine.

  • What’s up John. Thanks for the MM9 update today. I want to play the demo badly, but unfortunately I have to get ready for work. Anyways, thanks again.

  • “Mega Man 9 and WipEout HD tonight”

    I won’t be getting either ;_;

  • @170. I’m totally down for a MMX remake! I really enjoyed Maverick Hunter X on the psp, and i hope capcom would do something like that on the PSN in the future. Especially if they spruce it up a la Bionic commando…

  • Hmm…was looking to get this, but hearing there are no trophies (even retroactively!) and no remote play support…I may just not and play my original NES versions and save me some cash.

  • IT’S UP ON PSN!!!!!!

  • on dead rising to ps3
please tell me yes or no
    i mean c’mon
i dont really want to buy a 360 or wii
yet i want to play dead rising

  • anyone wanna play me on WipEout? send me a friend invite, my name’s the same as here

  • “No plans for a physical copy. You still haven’t jumped on the digital download train? Come on, it’s nice in here.”

    No I haven’t, and I won’t be. And I already explained why.

What’s the matter Capcom? Don’t you want my money?

Why would I pay for something I don’t actually own? It’s utterly pointless.

No physical content = no sale.

  • You have no idea how happy this makes me to see you, Capcom, send MM9 to PSN.

Megaman games have, for lack of a better word, pissed me off over the years, but I don’t think there’s been an NES franchise so rewarding past all the frustration.

Speaking of, ask Inafune if he has any more female Robot Masters in mind for Megaman 10. The Robot Master position’s been a sausagefest for 9 MM games now XD.

  • lol i love this game good to see rush is in it to :)

  • A classic is always welcome!
A question tho what was the mega man where you had to fight a small purple robot after beating every boss, its a more recent one but this mega man was very nice too (i think this robot was in a bigger robot when you first meet him)

  • Wow, this was actually a good blog post from you. I had my attack already to go, but it’ll have to wait for another day.

  • John I’m having a serious problem with my copy of MM9.

I played it once with no problems but after I exited the game it will no longer boot up for me. It just hangs on a black screen and I have to shut off my PS3 by holding the power button.

All my other downloaded games still work fine. Please look into this for me!

  • playing megaman9!!!!! i loved the intro!! brings back so much memories!!!! enjoy my $10 wisely. ok gotta go back playing while wipeout still dl.

  • You want to have a good old Megaman story? Here’s a good one (I think).

In the summer of ’89, a friend and I finished Megaman 2. Being big fans of Megaman, we were looking for something to help us pass our Megaman craving. And guess what the obvious way was??? Create our own Megaman 3 project. We “worked” (well, we weren’t really working, it was so much fun doing that) really hard and seriously on this project, designing new robots, new bosses, a new story line… Well I guess all the things a developing team has to do to create a great game (at a 13 years old scale :) ).

My inspiration was at night, while I was watching TV, I was drawing really cool robots. If I remember well, one of our robot idea even became one of Megaman 3 bosses.

Just writing this brings back to me so much great memories. I think I could say it was my best childhood summer time.

It’s too bad that at that time, Megaman boss contest was not there yet.

A couple of weeks ago, I was doing some cleaning in my old stuff, and guess what I found? All our old drawing our MegaMan 2.5 Project (MegaMan 3 wasn’t anymore the right name for that project for obvious reasons… :) ).

Anyways, if you’re curious to see how they look like, let me know, they are on my facebook page.

You know what, this is one of those memories you’ll always remember and you’re looking forward to tell to your children when you’ll be 65 years old… :) Thank MegaMan and Capcom!

  • I apologize if this has been asked already, but any word on the trophy patch for ReArmed? I stopped playing it around midway because I didn’t want to get too far ahead in case the trophies weren’t retroactive. But it calls to me everyday! I want to start playing again, so please let me know.

  • Sorry for the misspelling and gramatical errors… I’m french-canadian :)

  • john i added you to my psn account so you never know we might end up playing one of the big game together in a vs match lol
im sure i will win .
btw i havent heard anything about the limited edtion of mm9 what happen?

  • Oh My Goodness! What’s up John, i’m back with the feedback.

I admit, this game is hard as bricks! It’s extremely fun to play, and i am really glad to see you have not disappointed the ‘HardCore’ fans. It really is what we have been waiting for. Couldn’t be better. That’s all for now, i’m off to kick some Megabutt. Thanks again

  • Aw man this game is great, I already beat Galaxy man and Concrete man :D. I used to play the old Megaman 2 on my gameboy like every day, and it’s by far my fav. You guys need to keep adding to the megaman powered up and maverik hunter x series though. it’d be awesome to see megaman 2 and x2 with new graphics and everything
But keep up the good work capcom, and hopefully I can get my hands on that original nintendo cartridge:D.

  • John I added you. Jcprz69. Megaman is tough as hell but it’s so great I don’t even mind. By the end of the week I should be kicking it’s rear end. I remember when I first picked up 6 and ran through the whole game in under a half hour. That was the first time I had played it in possibly 10 years. When I rented it I had only played it for a day. This game is awesome-q-sauce.

Mention U.N Squadron to anybody at capcom yet??

  • Good ol’ challenging games. That’s what we need. Kids these days have everything too easy. Still remember my times, back in the 80’s (yeah, I played all the MMs back in the NES days), playing Battletoads and almost eating my controllers in anger. You had to fight your way through the games, against hordes of enemies, bugs, bad collision detecting, everything. In one sitting, ’cause few of them had anything resembling anything near a save.

That’s being a hardcore gamer. Surviving against all odds. It definitely isn’t about collecting trophies.

We need more games like that. Unrelentless, punishing, awesomesauce. Thanks Campcom, thanks Inafune-san.

  • Ok John, I played the demo and loved it. great work.

  • For everybody who’s played this on their HD set up. What’s the resolution? The demo shows 1080p, but it’s a “small” box in the center of the screen. I love the 8-bit look and feel, but “SD” resolution makes my 47″ TV go all emo on me. It begged me to delete my Burnout save and start collecting Trophies.

  • @John – this is my earlier response to you copied from the “coming soon..” thread that now appears to be dead.

John – You say that you couldn’t add trophies to the PS3 version of MM9 because of resource issues, but I really hope you guys will reconsider later, especially after this sells like friggin wildfire and you guys make boatloads of cash off of it.

This “no trophy” issue is really starting to perpetuate a cycle. No trophies = less sales on cross platform games = less devs bother to do trophies because of less sales = no trophies.

I had planned on buying this game on AT LEAST 2 systems, the PS3 and the Wii, and perhaps the 360 later just because. Now i’ll most likely only buy it on the Wii, because it’s more or less pointless to buy the PS3 version for no perks over the Wii version. I *might* still buy the 360 version for the achievements, but that was a maybe at best before (see my previous aversion to the 360’s D-pad). Capcom has effectively halved the money they could have made off of me by one bad business decision.

Granted, I’m probably in the minority and I doubt many people will buy this game multiple times over, but frankly I want to support you guys for being so damned awesome. That’s why I’m torn. I love Megaman. My first videogame memory was Megaman 2. I would gladly pay you guys 3 times over for this wonderful game, but a man has to have principles at the same time. But what is worse? Keeping the cycle going by not buying the PS3 version, or continuing to support you guys when the brass can’t even cough up enough dough and manpower to add in something as simple as trophy support (and in a timely manner *cough BC:Rearmed cough*)?

But don’t think I’m blaming you, John. I’m not, really. Whoever the nameless, faceless brass is that makes those decisions..HE gets my ire.

-added note – after playing the Demo on PS3 i’m even more torn. the PS3 remote is far superior to the Wiimote in every way, yet my annoyance at the trophy issue is holding me back from buying it on the PS3.

    • A game in development has a set budget that includes the whole scope of the project. Trophy support wasn\’t in the plans in the beginning because the implentation standards weren\’t ready at the time. With so many multiple project going at one time, it is difficulty to find resourses for something that was outside of the scope.

  • The Demo is fun John I’m still hoping the team will decide to add trophies via patch later down the line. good demo wish I had the $10.

  • Here’s my MM story by the way.

My first memory of playing Megaman (or any game for that matter) was when I was at my cousin’s house. I was about 5. he had a friend over, and we had rented some games. I began playing Megaman. My cousin and his friend watched for a minute, then began roughhousing and otherwise being young boys, what with the running and screaming about the house.

They kept coming in and asking me to play, and I kept refusing. I was utterly addicted to that game, and I refused to put the controller down and go play. I am now utterly addicted to number 9. These games are truly works of art. They aren’t hard because they suck, like many NES games people get nostaligic about. And they don’t suck because they are hard, no matter what anyone tells you. They defy logic by being both difficult (without being cheap..a common trick of the NES days), and extraordinarily fun.

  • Just currious why Mega Man 9 is 63mb big when other “Old school” 8-bit megaman was less than 1MB big on the NES cartredge… what’s eating up all my memories. @_@…
the internet is not a dumptruck..
but my ps3 shure is. ^_^

  • Actually it`s great to see such a classic game appear again, and this time on PSN ! this game is a must buy for me, I`ll get it immediately after I finish some issues I have recently.

Hey John, can you do me a favor ? I`ve sent more than 4 messages to Tsubasa Inaba “the producer of Siren : Blood Curse” and Keiichoro Toyama “the director” but they never answered me ! What I want is, how the hell can I reach them ? please tell man !

  • i really want to try the demo! it looks great! i’m lovin the 8 bit look! but i’m about to send my ps3 into the shop for repairs. But as soon as it comes back i’m going to check this out!
