PlayStation.Blog Readers: “First!” to 100,000

188 8

I’ve been out of the office almost the entirety of the past 3 weeks (New York, Orlando, Tokyo), so I’m a bit behind on some of the paperwork. But on September 21st, 2008 at 4:43 pm, user “jskillzball” commented:

thanks for the post i always feel better after i come home from football and read these blogs.

Well, that was a nice sentiment. The Blog Bean Counters (they’ll *love* being referred to like that) informed me that jskillzball also helped us reach a milestone. And by “us” I mean “you” – comment #100,000. Seeing as how we had published about 650 posts at that time, that’s an average of over 150 comments per post! Take a look around the internet – you’re not going to see such a consistently dedicated group of readers too often. It’s like everyone in Burbank, California or Cambridge, Massachusetts posted one time each! (I don’t think that’s what happened, right?)

It’s been an interesting ride, as you readers are just as likely to point out what you don’t like as you are to let us know what you enjoy. For instance, I believe roughly 78% of the comments were demands for In-Game XMB (I kid, I kid!). Seriously though, we definitely appreciate the constructive critiques, and when you see an often-requested feature show up in a game’s patch or firmware update, I believe it’s proof that “the system works.”

And I can tell you from experience that game developers have told me the feedback they’ve received on this Blog, from readers like you, has been incredibly useful to them – hopefully as much as the post you’ve commented on was to you.

Hanging out

So please, keep them coming, even if it’s just to say “trophies, kthxbai!” And please continue to keep them (mostly) on-topic, as that helps make sure that the right sets of eyes are reading your opinions. I’m sure we’ll reach comment #200,000 in no time. Thank you.

Oh, and jskillzball, I’ll be contacting you when I get back from TGS, I believe a schwag bag is in order.

  • Well PS BLOG reached a milestone, now the ps3 can reach another milestone, on top of LBP, KZ2, R2 just to mention a few, if they bring trophy support for MGS4…. Im just saying it could b possible

P.S. i know im speculating on the up-coming games but testing LBP assures me that the rest of the games r gonna b awesome :)

  • I’m happy that the Playstation community has such a positive effect on the developers.

One thing I’m dying for is an announcement regarding Metal Gear Solid 4 trophies. This is a spectacular game, and I’d LOVE to do whatever it takes to achieve the platinum trophy for it. Please get Hideo Kojima to commit!

  • I want to go to Tokyo!!!

  • @Shqype:

It would SUCK if I had to play Metal Gear Solid 4 a fourteenth time… Not really sure if it’s fourteen, but if a there was a reason aside from the fact that it’s perfect, I don’t know how my body would react.

Thank you Mr. Rubenstein and the rest of the Sony team for taking user comments to heart.

  • Jeff…

Any chance the blog refresh will include using flash 7 for videos so that we can actually watch them inline on the blog and not have to hunt them down on youtube.

Also…any chance you can talk to the powers that be about trailers for demos and games…it doesn’t seem to be used near as much as it could be in the PSN Store. For those of us living in data cap hell (Canada) it would be nice to preview before downloading…even if its ‘just a demo’.

    Peace out.

  • hope im 200,000

  • I want to BUY stuff on PSN!

Please accept non-us cards! Or sell the pre paid cards in some good store, like amazon! not Blockbuster s**t.

Stop f***ing the players without sony blessing.

  • I totally enjoy the interaction on the Blog, congrats to Sony and to you Jeff , thanx from us the consumer , and was wondering , can I get some Swag for my kind words , I’ve been askin from day one , Game on!

  • I think a bundle for the PS3 with the Official PS Bluetooth Mic and the PlaystationEye would be a hit. Only about a handful of the people on my friends list own a mic or an EyeToy at the very least. Plus it is annoying when I’m playing a certain Tactical Espionage Action game online and I am the only one with a Mic or a keyboard. A failure to communicate much?

  • Well since we’re on the subject (cuz i just made it the subject) i’d like to request improving the message reading/writing interface. If interested I can type a longer description of what exactly is frustrating or can be worked out better.

  • hey jeff if you could please email me or call me( I’ll send you my number if you email me) about extra life i need more info on it and i have tried everybody with no luck

  • @jeff will there be other chances of winning another swag..? Do you have any idea what time the conference is from sony??

  • Wow 200k!? I want to go to Tokyo. :(

  • Hi Jeff, Have fun in Tokyo. Can we expect any exclusive news for the Blog from TGS?

  • OK Jeff, When is HOME coming out?

You said to ask and now that’s what I’ll do till release. It’ll be my blog sig from now on. Muhahahahahahahahaaa

  • Cool 116 comments so fast!

  • Is there any way to know how many times each poster has left a comment?

  • trophies, kthxbai!

  • nice! i wanna post number 200 000

  • Thank you Sony for all of your hard work. I for one appreciate the fact that you make me feel like I am your number one customer.

  • Yeah that is awesome! 100,000!

  • we here at Cambridge salute you good sir, huzzah!

  • That is awesome!

  • Cool! PlayStation.Blog is awesome; I’m happy to be a part of this.

  • 200,000 comments seems alot but wit a network like this well b there in no time…hopefully i’ll make the 200,000th comment…

  • First, I would like to express my thanks for all the updates. I am glad to see that issues are being addressed. I have included my suggestions for the future PS3 firmware updates below, and hopefully they will be taken into consideration. These items in my opinion MUST be added at some point to maximize enjoyment potential…please and thank-you!
    ———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————
    PAL / NTSC support
    – I have a major need for both standards. The system should be region free. What if I visit or move to another region, does this mean I must have access to or purchase another PS3? Unacceptable!
    Create folder images
    – I can’t stand how we’re forced to accept the last item downloaded or installed as the image for the folder cover.
    Password Protection
    – Everything should have this option within the OS (Ex. users, installed apps / programs, game content etc.)
    Keyboard Operation
    – At the very least, standard shortcuts are needed (Control + C, V, X, Y, A, Z etc.)
    – Print screen is needed
    – Remove Shift + backspace as delete all. I can’t express how many times I’ve accidentally erased everything because of it. Which brings back to the shortcuts…if they were there that wouldn’t have been such an issue. Make the delete all something else.
    – Create a spell check application or incorporate one (auto) within the system itself. Even if you are an English Professor, it can be useful.
    AVS (Address Verification System)
    – Ka-Ka…need I say more? Answer: “No” but I will explain anyway.
    – This AVS is a major concern for me, I was able to make PSN purchases basically since launch, and when I attempted to use another card, a splash screed says I’ve entered the information incorrectly. Now, clearly there is an issue there; the splash screen needs to be revised to include a more descriptive explanation. It took many attempts to realize that the issue wasn’t due to incorrect information implementation, but AVS. Even Sony Tech Reps couldn’t figure it out at first…and when you incorrectly attempt 3 times, you are forced to wait no less than 24 hrs prior to the next attempt. Even the representatives are unable to do anything server side, regardless of their company seniority level. That is crazy and unacceptable. I know I’m not alone in this issue as well.
I am still unable to make purchases, which continues increase my fury within as more and more cool stuff is released. I have made many calls and emails in regards to this issue without finding a resolution, even to this very day. I struggle to understand how it’s possible that throughout the entire corporation, no person is able to assist with this type of situation. You would think such a monumental flaw would be addressed immediately, (At least in less than six months, which is approximately the amount of time elapsed thus far) seeing as how it must be costing Sony untold financial stress.
If you would like to see my issue you can view the Gamer Advisory Panel (G.A.P.) thread here:
    http://gap.us.playstation.com/?q=node/77911&from=0&comments_p
    – My suggestions (In no particular order) are:
    First,
include an option to add more than one payment method simultaneously (Even if it’s two credit cards)
    Second,
make the system more user friendly. Revise the splash screen to advise closer to the actual issue. One explanation for all is not helpful. I can understand that there are security issues to consider, however; there must be a way to vaguely describe the issue. Anything is better than how it is.
    And Third,
Don’t force A.V.S. on everyone just yet. Not all banking institutions have implemented this feature. Wait until they do. At the very least, have an option within higher level support to correct issues that occur on the billing server.

  • XMB (Cross Media Bar)
    – Currently the in game features appear choppy with subpar reaction times.
    – The use of the XMB while typing an email would also be useful.
    – Perhaps even allow the option for XMB on XMB use to allow for multitasking while in game. I realize that too much would deplete processing power, but perhaps a once only XMB on XMB could be devised. Wouldn’t it be nice to be able to refer back to something while typing an email in game?
    – The option to open a web browser in game would be nice as well. Why we cannot already is nothing short of ridiculous.
    – Being able to play any music would be beneficial in game also. I don’t understand why the game developer needs to implement the use of this feature for us to play anything. There should be an option within the in game XMB, where you can mute the games music and play your own. This override option should not be difficult to create…not when you’re Sony.
    Web Browser
    – Update Flash
    – Web interface is not very well devised. Sony already works with Google on Life with Playstation (LWP), which is in dire need of improvements that I won’t get into here.
Perhaps Sony could work with Firefox to implement a better browser.
    Hard Disk Drive (HDD)
    – Find a way to allow the use of NTFS…FAT sucks period.
    – Allow access to the HDD itself. I can’t stand that I’m unable to directly access certain things contained within. I know that security is needed for copyright infringement reasons, but you could allow access to the other things. (Ex. Using an image from another theme without direct manipulation)
    Trophies
    – Increased response time. When I attempt to compare, the load time is just silly…and I have an excellent connection.
    – The trophy interface could also be improved there’s just not enough features and everything is too small (Based on 50” 1080p Series 6 Plasma Television).
    Games
    – Volume adjustment. There are some games that are recorded very high (Ex. Mortal Kombat II). I would love to be able to adjust each games volume individually, automatically retaining the setting preferences.
    – Also add a separate auto-play adjustment for games / videos. I like Movies to auto-play but not games. Currently you can only set either on or off.
    – Why can we write from the PS2 Memory card but not to it? This should be fixed.
    – All games should incorporate the Players Met section of the XMB.
    – Messaging between PS3 and PSP would be good.
    Friends
    – Set our own icon for online. I would love to be able to set my own image instead of a .gif from a limited list provided by Sony. Perhaps you should add more images as well. I have like 10 friends with the same icon.
    – Having said that; the option to change the icon of your friend would be good. Let them have their choice but allow me to add an image beside or something for my benefit.
    – Change or add to a friend’s name. Sometimes I forget who’s who…even when I know them personally.
    – Add a personal note section for a comment on your friends (For your viewing benefit only).
    – Longer comment character max.
    – Friends list should be unlimited if possible.
    – Option to store emails separate from newer ones.
    – Option to delete multiple saved emails simultaneously.
    OS Interface
    – More Colours. PSP has so many, why is the all mighty Flag Ship console inferior in this regard?
    – More Visualizations or allow us to download our own somehow.
    – I want to move or interact with XMB items (ex. Info Board) I don’t like where it’s placed, and want to move it. There are other items as well but I trust you get the point.
    – Support for ALL container formats. Why have limits? If I want to play an .mkv or certain xvid file, I should be able to regardless of their developers.
    – Playstation ON/OFF timer.
    – Powered stand-by USB ports.
    – Opacity adjustment. I would like to adjust certain areas individually.
    – Multitasking. I would love to work on something without having to close a browser or other running applications.
    – Video icons only, why? I would like have an option to add something dynamic, or perhaps an image as the icon.
    – Hide items within OS or XMB from Sub Users. I don’t want the sub users to see everything on my profile.
    – Notifications, the option for sound should be available.
    – Setting to adjust when or when not to notify would be great as well.
    – FONTS, I want to add more or have more either way.
    – I’m not sure if anyone else has this issue, but when playing Movies the info will often pop up without cause all on its own. Why does it do this I wonder? Please fix this.
    – Better iPod support. I can’t find anything in that current rubbish.
    ———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————
Well, that’s all I can think of at the moment.
Thanks for enduring this rather lengthy list.
Have nice day, evening or night!

  • Sorry to triple post but I thought it may have been too long last time… I just want to get these ideas out there to you all.

    Please don’t delete it.

Thanks and have a nice night.

  • ..is that a “repost iddy! it’s relevant this time!” i hear..?
sure, don’t mind if i do:
I would have emailed this to the playstation support, but they’re not exactly helpful.. or have any idea about anything you can’t find online..
anyway, the trophy thing.. i was wondering, why does it take so long to load them.. and gamercards..? authentication??
surely the info it downloads is like a .txt file.. a few words, a couple of nuumber to signify a picture here and there.. and for trophies comparing.. a .csv file doesn’t take minutes to download, a column for this game, one for another game.. the ps3’s cpu can order them by title/playdate, that doesn’t need to be an issue really..

ah, it’s good that you’s find this helpful, cos this system, is much better than someone emailing me back with less information than i sent them :)

  • You asked for It and here it is, I have a 40gb PS3 with a 320gb HDD upgrade, a fast 12mb wireless internet and have own every single PlayStation Console to date. PS1,PSX,PS2,PS2 Slim,PSP Release, PS3 and always loved the games and etc… But PS3 has let me down the most, as usual i expect a ban and a Don’t Have Fun message from teh PS-Online staff for expressing free speech but here it gos:
    ======================
    1. Trophies came in too late and Sony doesn’t enforce every game to include it, so whats the point of me or the next guy stay up days to get that Platinum with 1 out of 1000 users have or try to get a trophy?

    2. In-Game XMB has only few games allow you play your music (Yeah the other company has patent i get it) and still its not using the XMB.

    3. PSN has gotten slow, Paid DLC’s are downloaded very slowly…? I thought i paid for this shouldn’t i download it from a separate server?

    4. Flash is useless on the browser the only use is cheap flash games and YouTube, You can’t even go to NG, FunnyOrDie, or a cool flash 9 based website, whats the point?

    5. Low browser cache (How about 1gb cache limit for those who browse youtube for a long time?)

    6. Longer Comment Bar character limit for Friend list (Scroll the rest of the message like Info Board)

    7. PlayStation 2(R) Emulator for $50, if hackers can do it, so can Sony, since its their product.

    8. Better PlayStation Online Cards to display our Trophies and status in-real time.

    9. Option to extend our 1 year warranty to 2,3, or even 4. Not just charge $150 for a one-time fix.

    10. Daily PSN content updates: Videos, Podcast, Wallpapers, Themes. Doesn’t have to be all demos and games leave them for weekends.

    11. Monthly Free Arcade Game that are paid for by Sponsors.

    12. More PLAYSTATION(R)NETWORK Status icons (BrB, On PSNStore, Playing PS1/2, Lazy, Board, At Launch, Away, Invisible, Downloading and Away.)

    13. Take The Battery Meter lower than the Clock.

    14. Turn Off the Controller While Downloading Game Updates / Installing Game Cache.

    15. Every couple months include new Music Player Visualization or allow people to buy packs.

As stated before i don’t expect a response but rather a ban or a deletion of this message as like it is on the forum, freedom of speech and requests = ban and punishment. Well at least I tried

  • wow i forgot to make a blog profile so i missed the beta… but i been readding u guys every day can wait to see more

  • yep these are issues . Now lets get to work people and make us happy DAMN IT …
lmao whew I feel alittle better

  • ps, Gap members should have diggs on Home beta
    :(

  • I bet it is true 78% of the comments where In-Game XMB. I bet you saw the biggest drop comments posted after in-game xmb was implemented.
Thanks for the update and congrats you guys are doing an awesome job.

  • skype on ps3 please… i mean its like the future! we could have video calls. and i could buy a pseye and talk to my mum on my playstation. it would take the ps3 media centre to a whole new level because we could communicate like we see the ‘future’ in the movies.

works for psp although not on mine as i have a fat one.

it would have to work so we could stay online during games and recieve calls. obviously if we had to take a video call we would have to leave the game… (yeah right lol) i don’t mind having to leave the game to take the call. as long as i can hear it ringing while im playing .
    thats my opinion.

  • I have a suggestion that only occurred to me the other day how stupid it is not having it and how easy it would be to fix it!

When you get a message from a friend online you get a popup – however if you are offline or away from the screen there is no way to know you have unread messages! This is frankly stupid!

It must be an easy firmware fix to have the popup for messages received offline to appear when you next turn on AND have an “Unread Messages” icon somewhere – even if it’s next to the Battery indicator when you press the PS button – “There are X Unread Messages in your Inbox”

My other suggestion, which I’ve already asked before now, is to get some kind of web interface to the trophy system so we can access our profiles online and also create PSN related forum signatures – trophy numbers and recently played games and the like.

  • Hi Jeff thanks for keeping us updated!

I am very excited to see the new face of the blog.

Also please tell me that PS3 will have tons and tons of JRPGs!!!!

    Hugs

  • Also, it would be nice if you created a new blog entry on these suggestions. If you do take on board the comments like you say, you should post something to tell the community which ones you’ve heard and which you are looking at implementing (or reasons why some aren’t possible and we should stop asking!).

Even if they don’t end up being added, it would be nice have a roundup of the ideas you have heard coming from the community.

It will give us an idea as to what direction future Firmware updates will go! Give us something else to look forward to now that we have in-game XMB! lol

  • Wow, go sony!

  • Nice sony, good to see you are acceling in a rough economy.

  • First of all, love the blog! I read it daily and I find it very useful when I’m trying to decide if I should buy a game like Motorstorm 2, Resistance 2..and so on. I own many sytems but only one next gen (or is it current gen now) which is the PS3. If I had one request of the PS3 it is that you could update the browser. I’d like to be able to check my email from it and I would love it if it supported more video file types and video hosting sites. Hulu comes to mind here. Watching videos on youtube from my PS3 in my living room is much more comfortable than sitting at my desk. And I would love it if you guys supported more video file types. Thanks.
