Firmware 5.0 Demo: PlayStation Store on PSP

410 2

Hi everyone, as Eric mentioned in his post yesterday, we wanted to give you a live demo of the PSP’s direct access to PlayStation Store, which will be coming with the 5.00 firmware update. Now whenever your PSP is connected to the Internet over WiFi, you’ll be able to download and enjoy the latest games, demos and trailers on the go without needing to sync up to your PS3 or PC. Here’s a brief walk-through of what you’ll experience.

On a related note, the PS3 firmware update (2.50) will add Flash Player 9 support to the PS3 Web browser, so you’ll be able to actually watch this video (and all of our blog videos) on your PS3 once the firmware goes live!

In addition, I want to point out that the PlayStation Network is scheduled to be unavailable in North America today from 11AM to 4PM PST due to essential maintenance work.

  • great update love the new account managment interface. great work

  • why do videos pause now when you bring up the xmb?

  • PS3 fw. 2.50 – why do videos pause now when you bring up the xmb?

  • Dear Sony,

Can I PLEASE get the live streaming radio function on my PS3 as I do on my PSP? I love that function and really wish I could use it on the PS3. And what about Skype? Will that not work on the PS3 either?

    Thanks.

  • Hi everyone :)

I’m new in the PS3 universe, new on this blog, and have a question that must been have asked a thousand times before, but I can’t find an official answer to it.

Will the PS3 support the MKV container in a near future ? It’s for me the biggest lack of feature on this awesome machine !

  • ERIC,
I LOVE YOU!! WELL, NOT REALLY!
BUT I AM THRILLED THAT YOU HAVE ANSWERED OUR CALL AND MY CAPITOL LETTERS SNAPFEST THE OTHER DAY. TODAY I AM NOT YELLING, BECAUSE MY CAPS LOCK JAMMED..SORRY..
BUT I DO THANK YOU FOR FINALLY, FINALLY ADDING FLASH PLAYER 9 TOO OUR PS3’S.

NOW HERE IS MY 1 VITAL QUESTION THOUGH?

AT TIMES, WHEN I, OR OTHERS GO TO CERTAIN SITES, A MESSAGE APPEARS SAYING IN ORDER TO VIEW THIS CONTENT, YOU MUST UPGRADE TO VERSION 10.

SO MY QUESTION IS, WILL YOU, SONY, CONTINUE TO GIVE US AND UPDATE TO THE NEWER FLASH PLAYERS WHEN THEY ARE RELEASED TO THE PUBLIC?

CAUSE NOW I HOPE THAT WHEN WE GO TO SITES THAT USE FLASH PLAYER 10, WE WON’T GET THE MESSAGE, “TO VIEW THIS YOU MUST HAVE FLASH PLAYER 10”

  • @ 357
    Whats the MKV Container?

  • MKV is a movie file, like wmv or avi or mpg

the MKV container is the best for HD movies i have seen so far!

  • Well I like the idea……to bad I accidentaly broke my PSP 2 days ago but good idea.

  • @357 vip
no, there is no matroska support. As far as I know, there probably won’t be any in the near future for two reasons:
    1) MKV is not a mainstream technology. With exception to opensource projects like vcl or mplayer, none of the major media players like WMP, Quicktime, or Real handle that format. Also, few (if any) commercial entities produce video in that format. Most content is delivered either in the mp4, h.264, divx, wmv, or mov formats.
    2) Because MKV is not mainstream, there is a disproportionaly large percentage of illegally pirated content using the MKV container. Being a company in the movie industry, I can’t see sony supporting mkv any time soon.

  • I see only moderation of posts (DELETING THEM) and no answers to questions or concerns. What about the guy that has two life with playstation icons and lost all of his music, games and pics?

  • This *better not* mean we’re getting more DLC for PSP and less actual physical releases……or there will be hell to pay.

  • SWEET!…

  • so one issue with this new WiFi PSN store

when I try to download something, say it says there are 400mb required to download, and I have say, 700mb available on my 1gb memstick, how come it tells me there isn’t enough room to download?

this is annoying because I can barely have more than one game installed on my memstick at a time with this, unless it’s something like echochrome and flOw or something

please fix this if at all possible

  • just run your mkv files thought mkv2vob; only takes 2 mins then they play perfectly.

  • Ok, first thing is first.. Thank you guys for constantly trying to improve the ps3 and making ever dollar spent, well worth it! Now on to my concerns over these two updates: Ok, please bring back video play while pulling up the xmb! The whole pausing video thing is old school, that xmb scrolling across while music videos played in the background or a nice divx movie played made the ps3 feel THAT NEXT GEN! Go forward Sony, not backwards… Secondly, has anyone tried remote play VIA THE INTERNET since both platforms were updated? I just tried now from work, and when I either try to Login on the PSP Store or the Login screen for Remote play, I am getting an Error:805F0007 !!! Please. If anyone tries this and runs into the same error reply back to my post or email me @: goldmagnum025@aol.com… Thanks in advance

  • u can have more then one headset register thanks u sony u guys rock

  • why do you just use youtube viddler takes FOREVER to load on a half way brand new windows vista laptop i cant even watch the video its takes so long :(

  • Anyoneeeee try remote play via internet after the updates????

  • OH NOOOOOOO!!!!

What have you done to all my PS3 themes???
4 new Icons under Account Management and a Power Save Icon jammed into the middle of my settings row (at least throw it on top or bottom!)? Can we get a theme builder update at least, please??

    :(

  • I’m lovin the new PSP update but there’s one minor problem with the scene search feature now. When I press the square button to bring up scene search there are vertical line on the thumbnail scenes then freezes and shuts off my PSP after a few seconds.

  • @Nito025

Remote play works fine for me. I would suggest restarting the psp or the ps3 and trying once more.

  • @ Feature: Did you do the remote play via the internet or private network??

  • @Nito025
Either way it works for me.

  • I suspect the video pausing while using the xmb is due to memory limitations. I guess flash 9 takes up a lot of space. These are the trade-offs I guess. It would be good of Eric and the firmware developers to make a more memory efficient xmb and an even more memory efficient in-game xmb to allow in-game access to music.

  • in-game access to music for all ps3 games that is.

  • Nice updates! Sorry, I had to watch this video “twice” hehe :) Grace is cute

  • I can’t believe this update just screwed up my ability to use my psp via remote play from work! I always bash the people who come on here and start crying once there’s an update and it affects them in a bad way! And now I’m ona them! Sony musta changed something with the way the consoles login to the network! Because yesterday I was fine, today I come in and can’t login to the psn!..its not my internet here at work because the ps3 allows me to browse the web on it…its just at the login screen that – get Error:805F0007 ! Anyone have any clue what error that is??….and that video pausing during xmb usage is trash….wow never thought I’d be bitter after a fw update…

  • @Nito025
Well just think about all the users who haven’t had their firmware wishes fullfilled. And not just the ones who want memory hogging ideas such as the ability to play a video while a game is running. I wish they could give us the simple ability to edit the album info for multiple pieces of data simultaneously or to just create and move data into folders like the psp can along with the ability to access music while playing a game for all ps3 games. But I guess Eric and the firmware gang need to redesign at least the in-game xmb to make it less of a memory hog. I’m thinking along the lines of just having in-game xmb just be a single line of icons all the time. So when you wanted to access a category in the in-game xmb, the xmb would be replaced by the items in that category you wish to access. Whatever happens I just hope they can get those 2 features done in the next firmware.

  • I will wait onj this update until the next one or i am forced into it. Too many posts about problems in such a small community.

  • Mannnn…the video pausing thing, sure its crappy, but its not making me lose any sleep over it…butttt the not being able to use my psp via internet!!! That’s got fired up rite now! When you used ur remote play via internet, were you still logging in from a network other than the one your ps3 connects from (work, friends house, etc.)???…and I’ve been reading a couple of forums where people are noticing a drop in the frame rate! Now, I did notice a difference last nite while playing socom! Didn’t look as crisp as the beta (before the update) but I’m hoping all this worrying is about this update is just the pestimistic side of me…anyone else experiencing these issues?

  • Well as much as I am glad that the PS3 has caught up with a couple of great PSP ideas for videos, I am disappointed that the update is now making my mp4 videos play in black and white. (animated icons are in colour though)

Photos / Games / DVDs all ok. Remote play ok too

I’m using component cables and a reset of the PS3 hasn’t rectified this. Has anyone else experienced this? Is there a solution, has one the settings being inadvertantly changed? Had a look round but couldn’t see anything obvious.

The store on the PSP works really well. Impressed.

  • loving the psp 5.00 update for psp! I think the store works even faster than it does on the ps3. bonus points!

  • Nice update Sony!
I didn’t think I saw this but, thank you for fixing the Music player and putting in a Pause button! gladly appreciated! Keep up the good work!

    – Don Marek

  • This is the best update yet :)

Loving the flahs player finally but what we need now is a flash plyer that will play live radio streaming station… That is the next big thing

  • does any body know if we get text rss feeds yet?

  • Holler

  • @FeaturePreacher

The in game Music from our files is needed for ALL games..
When PAIN added that patch for our Jukebox it was heaven. Now during some games, not many, but I tap my PS button, up comes the XMB, I go to my music, select any album, it plays..tap the PS button again, and now I am slamming my body into amusement park rides while headbanging to Metallica, or Megadeth and more.
I sure hope they add that feature to other games. But I am wondering since those songs, or music that is on say Midnight Club, or GTA 4 etc., Since they are paid to be in the game, and I am sure they get a little pay on royalties for those songs to be used for each game sale, I don’t think companies will be happy that they are paying bands for their music, but now we have the option of completely ignoring them and listening to our stuff.

  • @haskell

A game publisher or developer has no reason to worry about copyright holders of songs getting upset. The music industry is in dire straits these days. Music artists need the game industry more than it needs them. The music industry knows that people are doing them a courtesy by purchasing music instead of easily getting it for free. The real reason in-game access to music for ALL ps3 games isn’t available is the same reason in-game screenshots for ALL ps3 games isn’t available which is the same reason why videos now pause once you go to the xmb during video playback. That reason is the size of memory usage for the xmb. I hope the firmware developers address this so all the 3 problems mentioned can be fixed in the next firmware.

  • According to the Sony’s TGS 2008 press conference, the official bluetooth headset should be able to work with, I suspect, the psp-3000 and psp-2000. I have no idea about the psp-1000. Check it out here:

    gamevideos.1up.com/video/id/22104

It should be at the 05:58 time stamp.

  • Also in the video mentioned in comment 391, “ad-hoc party” was confirmed. Soon psp users will be able to ad hoc connect to other psp users through the ps3.

  • HELP! Since PS3 firmware 2.50 hit, my SIXAXIS controllers will not pair with my PS3! They just flash and flash (all 4 lights). If I plug the controller in it will stop flashing (but will remain off). If I then push the PS button, the controller will work properly. If I then try unplugging it while it is working, it will stop working and start flashing again (all four lights)! All three of my SIXAXIS controllers behave the same.

Why is this happening, Sony? I can’t stay within 2 feet of my PS3 all the time!

  • @393

This happened to me before, but I don’t remember how I fixed it. I think I shut it off for awhile then turned it on again and everything worked. Hopefully just a fluke thing…

  • It’s great that you can now access the Playstation Store directly from the PSP! However, we only have access to the games part of the store, so what about the video store (movies, TV, etc)? I know I can use my PS3 or PC to buy videos and transfer to PSP, but are there plans to provide access to the video store directly from the PSP?

  • @395
Grace already said it’s coming in 2009

    @391
I don’t think the headset is actually going to work with the psp. Basically you will be able to voice chat through the ps3 when using ad-hoc party. So essentially any headset that works with the ps3 would work.

This spells doom for X-link kai. I think about half of the people who use x-link are japanese kids playing monster hunter freedom 2 over the internet. Why don’t they just make capcom build internet connectivity into the game itself instead of coming up with such an elaborate way to trick an ad-hoc game into working online? Seriously, who actually sits around in a circle with a group of psp buddies to play ad-hoc games? Maybe in japan… Only two of my friends even own psp’s and they don’t have any of the same games as me.

  • @crystalx3d
I think ad-hoc party will expand further when home is released. People can just find other psp users with the similar interests in portable gaming. Either that or just use e-mail, instant messaging, or forums.

  • Will the Playstation Store for the PSP have feature updates too?
    Like PSN Friends list?

  • Is it my eyes? Or the Background waves of XMB has changed?

  • Here’s another place were people can voice their issues with the ps3 along with the comment section of this blog.

    http://www.youtube.com/user/PlayStation

Don’t forget to comment there as well as here to let Sony know what they need to address.
