Valkyria Chronicles Update: Demo, Q&A, More

73 0

Hi Everyone!

I’m Christopher Kaminski, the US Producer on Valkyria Chronicles, here to update you on a couple of things. First of all, we’ve released a few new trailers recently that showcase some of the main characters: Squad 7, Welkin and Alicia. As we approach launch, we’ll be showing off more of the key units who appear in the game’s imminent release!

Now let’s dig into the meat of this post. I’d like to tell you how the pre-launch event we had at the Sony PlayStation Store in San Francisco last month went!

Eager fans lined up to meet and get an autograph from our most-esteemed Producer from SEGA Studios Japan, Ryutaro Nonaka. Each person walked away with a limited edition autographed box sleeve, a handy item to have when they pick up a copy of Valkyria when it comes out in less than two weeks (November 4th!).

We even had Alicia Melchiott to greet the fans!

This was a great opportunity for everyone that attended the event to get a little sneak preview hands-on with the demo before anyone else. For those of you curious about how Valkyria Chronicles plays, it’s been available on Qore for the past 2 weeks, and hits the wider PSN today.

We raffled off some very cool items such as the official soundtrack from the game, toy figures Nonaka-san brought with him from Japan, signed art pieces from the game and of course the Sony PLAYSTATION 3! Pictured below are some of our lucky winners!

This was Nonaka-san’s first trip to San Francisco. He really didn’t know what to expect from this visit. Afterwards, he told us how genuinely overwhelmed he was by everyone’s enthusiasm for the game. He really was really excited to meet all the Valkyria Chronicles and SEGA fans and appreciates everyone coming out to support the game. Just look at that face in the picture above. He really hopes that everyone will enjoy playing Valkyria Chronicles as much as he enjoyed working on it!

He also took time to answer some of your questions, sent in by readers of PlayStation.Blog:

1. What games or other materials would you say were inspiration for this game?? What inspired you to put Vyse and Aika in Valkyria Chronicles?

The game’s fundamental story wasn’t really influenced by any other games. The reason for the “Skies of Arcadia” characters appearing had to do with staff like Chief Director Tanaka and Chief Artist Kanazawa and other folks who had worked on “Arcadia” as well. Since we had around 50 soldiers to create for the game, we decided to add them. “Valkyria Chronicles” and “Skies of Arcadia” take place in different worlds, but try not to overthink that too much. Besides, for players unfamiliar with “Arcadia,” they won’t even realize that these characters aren’t just other random soldiers.

2. Why did the team choose the watercolor painting art style for this game?

We wanted to show the triumph of the human spirit, even amidst the hardship of war; to do this, we felt it necessary to show not just the reality of the battlefield, but of real, human characters and emotional drama. This led to us creating the CANVAS system, our new graphic engine, to really show a sort of warmth and caring touch by creating imagery that looks like hand-drawn watercolors. To generate this real-time, hand-painted look takes quite a lot of processing power, and I think that we’ve accomplished what we set out to do.

3. Without spoiling anything what can you tell us about the storyline?

There’s an Empire, and there’s the small country of Gallia, which is a member of a confederation of smaller states. The Empire invades this small country, and so the heroes, including Welkin, who’s just this normal guy, along with Alicia and her military comrades, get wrapped up in this war. There are also legends of something known as “Valkyria,” and that’s something that plays a big part in this battle that these people get caught up in. You’ll have to play the game to find out more, though.

4. Is this game friendly to newcomers of the genre?

The user has a lot of freedom in this game (like the ability to select what units to bring into battle and how to set up their squad, how to utilize their squad on the field), and the fundamental gameplay mechanic is rather simple. I think that even beginners should be able to have a fun time with this game, and that they’ll get used to how it all works very quickly.

5. Are there any plans for downloadable content, expansion packs?? Any other unusual additions?

In Japan, on 8/8, our first batch of download content was released. This includes a new side-episode that centers on some of the side-characters, as well as a new extra-hard difficult. At the end of October, we hope to have our second content set released. (This will center on the Imperial Army’s Selveria squad fighting against the Gallian army in another additional episode). Plans for download content for the overseas releases are still to be determined.

All in all, the event went well and we were very happy to see everyone playing and enjoying the game. It was great to meet everyone and thank you for taking the time to come out to support Valkyria Chronicles.

  • I played the demo ….Im sold
    Another game for Fersis. :D

Also this ‘first’ thing is getting annoying.

  • Sweet Man!

But there gonna be any trophies or a patch after launch?
    just wondering

  • I really loved the look of this game but I’m not a fan of the type of game play.

Good luck to SEGA on this though as we need some strong titles in this genre.

  • Can’t wait to play this game!

  • Not my type of game, but I will download the demo.

  • Ive been playing this demo from Qore for a while now and I must say I really like this game. Love the art style, love the gameplay. Very unique game and If it wasnt coming out in such a game saturated time, id probably pick this up day 1. Also really wish it had trophies as it makes games more fun for me when I have specific challenges set for me.

  • Eternity_Viper_Snake

    …. i’ll try the demo thanks :)

and i agree w/Fersis (the first) thing is getting old already….

  • Awesome demo, by the way. Even though it was really short, I found myself playing it over and over.
I’m truly saddened by the fact that this game isn’t playable in 1080 (I have a 1080i TV that doesn’t do 720p… so your game would be 480p for me), as that means I won’t be picking it up. Such a sad flaw in such an otherwise great game.
Are you aware of the fact that many of the older HDTVs do not support 720p, and Sony’s lack of universal scaling means that either the devs must use the scaling sdk or many end users end up only being able to play in standard def…? Maybe next time :(

  • I loved the demo and will definitely buy this game.

  • how come this game doesn’t support trophies? Trophies have been out since June, and that 5 months now. I was surprise that this game doesn’t support trophies :(

  • Loved the mix of RPG and RTS.

Thanks for giving PS3 a decent game in both genres that us fans can dig in to (finally)!

Rest assured, you have my money on launch :)

  • Ah demos!!

    Looks cool!

    :P

  • this game seemed interesting, it still intrigues me, don’t like the combat style, wish it were more turn based like grandia or ff7 or legend of dragoon

  • I downloaded this demo off Qore and fell in love with it. The graphics and the gameplay are fantastic. Definately a purchase.

But I am slightly agitated. I noticed a lot of events that Sony and its partners hold on the west cost that fans can attend, while we on the east cost (south east for that matter) get totaly screwed. I would have loved to get some of those CDs, art pieces, or toys.

  • Dear SEGA, please patch/enable 1080i/p upscaling support in Valkyria Chronicles. Many disgruntled PS3 owners in the US have slightly older-generation HDTVs that don’t support 720p, as evidenced at this Official Playstation Forum thread:

    http://boardsus.playstation.com/playstation/board/message?board.id=ps3&thread.id=1543693&view=by_date_ascending&page=1

These PS3 users are very unhappy to find that Valkyria Chronicles does not support 1080p/i upscaled output. Therefore, they will NOT be able to buy or play the game (in HD). Please inform to the devs at SEGA of our implorement to enable some form of upscaled 1080p/i output for this game.

It’s really easy/trivial to enable 1080p/i upscaling in a PS3 game; all that’s required is to run the game at an unconventional resolution (e.g., 768×1080, 896×1080, 960×1080, etc), and the PS3 will automatically upscale the game to 1080p/i. For more information on the hidden Scaling hardware in the PS3, please refer to the following technical article at Beyond3D: http://www.beyond3d.com/content/articles/16/

Thank you so very much for hearing me out.

  • This game peaked my interest will check the demo out for shure and will proably get it also

  • day 1 buy for me.
    loved the demo

  • the demo was quite good i might have to try the full game

  • I have been eagerly awaiting this game since I saw the original trailer. Even without gameplay this looked to be an exceptional game and after playing the demo I see I was not wrong.
Any chance of us non San Francisco residents getting in on some of teh goodies?

Either way it will be a day one purchase for me. I don’t know about anyone else but I have played teh demo many many times.

  • Had it preordered for a while now. Absolutely loved the demo. Can’t wait for this game.

  • @16

You’re right, it didn’t work for me neither.

  • I played demo today.. and I’m for it! Great game :D

  • @ TheHater, The full game came out back in April in Japan, before there were even trophies on PS3 in development kits.

The demo was awesome and I can’t wait. Please buy this game everyone because it’s definitely the greatest RPG out there on next gen consoles.

  • its supposed to be http://www.valkyriachroniclesgame.com

    missing the a hehe

  • Thanks for the update Christopher.

  • Loved the demo.

  • demos are always welcome! cannot wait to try this one out.

    thank you kind sir,
    Lh

  • Will buy Day 1. Thanks SEGA.

  • Eagerly waiting for this great game! :D
Any chance it might get a trophy patch in the future? Not that it really matters, I’m getting this game day one! :)

  • I was a huge fan of Sega back in the Genesis days, and the Dreamcast thing hit me kind of hard- glad to see you guys have found your stride again.

But… ah, what’re you guys doing to me!? I can barely afford to get one game, but in the next month I have three games on my “to buy” list! (LBP, VC, R2) I may have to simply call forward some X-mas presents early. Though this is a nice problem to have, I suppose. Thank you! :D

  • If you guys can release downloadble content for this game at the end of October, then you can patch this game for trophy support. Put in trophies.

  • Go for downloadable content maybe extra side quest or minigames anything. Already paid for this game cant wait to pick it up from GS. Trophies has never been a direct purchasing factor for many rpgers, we are more happy to have rpgs to play than to worry about trophies. Keep up the good work.

  • In this generation of consoles where 3rd party exclusivity is becoming obsolete, I have 2 questions to ask.

    1. I don’t wish for the game to be ported to the 360, but I expect it to be just like so many other titles. How long will this be a ps3 exclusive?

    2. If it is going to the competitor’s console, since a port to that console must have achievements, what justification is left for the ps3 version not having trophies?

  • i just read the story about this game in OPSM, looks cool!

hopefully my PS3 will be fixed soon…

  • I want to thank you for answering one of my questions!!! (about Vyse and Aika)

    Thank you! :D

Of all the huge games coming out, I look forward to Valkyria Chronicles the most! ^_^

I really hope the DLC released in Japan makes it to our shores. I really see why it shouldn’t?

Again thanks for everything and thanks for bringung us this wonderfull game!

  • This game needs more publicity and hipe.

    I like the demo.

  • I like how the real-world Alicia shows more leg. :D

  • @ Seba501

I’m afraid you’re right :( jewels like this go unnoticed and underrated. People don’t like innovative and original games these days.

    Just rememeber Okami…

But I noticed this game! And I’m gonnna do everything to support it!

  • this game looks good but the gameplay is just not for me. i will wait until white knight chronicles arrive to NA.

    nice cosplay there btw :)

  • tried the demo of this game btw and it looks UNBELIEVABLE! i thought the whole “moving oil painting” thing was hype but this game really is beautiful. i like artistic games.

a Sly Cooper game with these graphics would be incredible.

  • This game is great and the art work look is gorgeous. I will be buying this as soon as I can afford it!

  • Yes I cant wait to download the demo once it is available, gotta start that tonight!!!!

Ive had this game preordered for a while!!

  • Already have this title pre-ordered. Nice that the demo is coming out to everyone on PSN and not just the Qore subscribers.

  • @Ajora

The demo was amazing and I can’t wait to buy this game. I also totally agree on what you said about games like these. Some people just aren’t willing to try something different and perfer playing FPS’s allday.

And Okami was also one of my favortites.

  • pre-ordered and fully payed off, the qore demo was a guaranteed sale from what was already a strong interest. Just love it :)

  • not to excited about this one

  • @Anyone worried about this game not getting enough publicity.

Something that would help this title gain publicity with people who may overlook it is trophies. It would seem quite inconsistent that this game could get downloadable content while at the same time not receive a patch for trophy support. Sony really needs to put their foot down and force trophy support on all ps3 games.

  • Thank you for the heads up Mr. Kaminski, and i hope we get those DLC very soon. lol

  • Yap.. That’s the game to support. unlike that one year old game from Namco/Bandai…
