PSP 3000 update

Posted by John Koller // Director, Hardware Marketing

Ratchet PSP bundle box

Based on ongoing discussions with our retail partners and the feedback they have received from their customers, SCEA has seen significant interest in the Ratchet & Clank Size Matters PSP Entertainment Pack in North America, which includes the updated PSP-3000. As a result, we will be streamlining our PSP hardware lineup and will no longer be offering the previously announced 4GB Memory PSP Entertainment Pack.

Consumers who are interested in a larger capacity memory option can purchase a 4GB PSP Memory Stick PRO Duo, which will be available this fall for $44.99 (MSRP). The Ratchet & Clank Size Matters PSP Entertainment Pack will continue to be available in Mystic Silver in North America, and, starting in December, will be available in Piano Black.

It’s a nice bundle but I’m a little disappointed that the PSP doesn’t have some kind of special graphic like the Kratos one.

blackbeard_  |  October 28th, 2008 at 9:06 am

I am waiting for a BLACK PSP. I really was looking forward to getting a BLACK PSP-3000 this year.

I don’t want the gay colored ones. I am not getting a PSP 3000 until the black one is made availble.

I don’t care about the bundled stuff… I just want a core BLACK PSP 3000.

Please release a BLACK version soon. PLEASE!!! I don’t even own a PSP yet and was going to get the black 3000 as soon as it came out. I am still waiting for it…

vandam  |  October 28th, 2008 at 9:13 am

I’m an owner of a PSP 1000 (FAT) for two years now and mine is holding up well… I’m really intersted in buying a new one… I might wait another couple of months before I update… Besides PS3 games Are my focus right now and boy there are alot of them I want… very strong game line up on PS3 and PSP…. And I can get a 8 gig stick for $50… :-)

LokeSTL  |  October 28th, 2008 at 9:20 am

My comment got deleted? Guess I wasn’t too far off. So, the screen issues were created when the 3000 was re-engineered for more battery life. So, why not restore the refresh rate to every line instead of every other line. Sure people will complain about the lessening the battery life by 20 minutes, but they can always buy the optional extended battery. Or you could just include the extended battery…

If the 4GB Memory Bundle was “Limited Edition”, why not just fill your existing pre-orders. Very discouraged….

105

LokeSTL  |  October 28th, 2008 at 9:31 am

…and how about giving us an actual release date? What is this “in December” bologna? Commit to something over there for god sake. No wonder the 4GB pack got the boot, it never really had a release date in the first place.

PS – The only reason that you’ve had “significant interest” in the R&C bundle is because it’s the only way to get a 3000. If you would have released them side by side, you would find that the 4GB bundle would sell equally or more. You sure you guys already know that, and this is just a [DELETED] marketing spin. Lame….

EnigmaNemesis  |  October 28th, 2008 at 9:31 am

@50 They are making it in Black in December with the same pack ins.

Anywho … I bought a PSP3000 and returned it before opening it after reading the interlacing issues.

Sony needs to fix it and have the refresh rate go every line and not every other, or I wont buy one. Screw a few minutes in battery life.

i really wanted that one i quess i wait till resistance psp release b4 i upgrade to the 3000
so is everyday shooter still coming out in nov

Mattchewie  |  October 28th, 2008 at 10:00 am

I agree with uraizen. Until the screen is “fixed” I will be sticking with the 2000. From the photos I have seen I’m surprised the screen ever passed the QA process.

crystalx3d  |  October 28th, 2008 at 10:04 am

You guys are all dumb. They aren’t doing away with the black 3000 or delaying it at all. It’s still coming out the same time, it’s just going to be bundled with R+C instead of the 4gb mem stick. Personally, I think that if they want to make some real money this holiday season, they need to come out with a bunch of different colors, like the ipod nano, and make them standard, not some limited time bundle. Plain, solid colors. People will pay money for that.

Also, I don’t think the scan lines problem affects all the new 3000 models. I have one and I can’t notice any scan lines at all. The only problem in mine is one little pixel is stuck bright blue. I think the scan lines might be due to a mis-calibration, or maybe it has to do with the type of ambient light in the room (fluorescent vs incandescent) or something like that.

joeboosauce  |  October 28th, 2008 at 10:05 am

Seriously, this is not a big deal!!!! Go to pricegrabber and search for the 4GB pro duo. Its $20!!! And if you go to slickdeals or fatwallet you can probably find one for FAR less. Expect $10-15 deals this holiday season.

And they are smart. Most people see the colorful characters and buy that package. And who buys most of these things during the holiday season? Women! Mothers! I saw a survey that showed over 50% or video game purchasers are women. You know, xmas gifts? This is not really a big deal to throw a fit over.

hey John…i picked up a new black PSP3000 thursday but i wanted to ask something since you’re the person to see about hardware…

i got the new PS3 bluetooth earpiece with Socom and it works well when it’s on but when i plug it back into the charging stand it disconnects from my PS3 and i have to go back into accessory settings to manually reconnect it every time. any help?

grimgard  |  October 28th, 2008 at 11:55 am

Epic fail. Not enough new features to but a new PSP and now they take away the only cool perk the 4 gig mem card bundle. Lame. Give me a PSP with two analog sticks, A biger screen and more system memory and I will buy it. If you keep repackaging the same old thing I will jsut keep my current old thing.

113

grimgard  |  October 28th, 2008 at 12:15 pm

I ment to say BUY not BUT in my last post. I just bought a 8 GIG pro duo for $40 ifthe PSP 3000 had the features all of us want it would be a easy choice to pick one up but…it does not so I’ll keep my PSP slim and be happy with my new 8 gig pro duo.

grimgard  |  October 28th, 2008 at 12:18 pm

What a joke! you can get a 8GB Pro Duo for the same price from amazon!

rokoqc  |  October 28th, 2008 at 12:49 pm

Too bad, I was also counting on the 4GB Bundle for the upgrade, I wanted the PianoBlack. I guess I’m staying with my PSP Slim. **Thumbs Down**

117

FritoZ  |  October 28th, 2008 at 1:08 pm

I still haven’t got a PSP yet, i have been waiting for them to bring one out with dual analog nubs..

i mean, who the heck though one analog nub was ok, but not two?

118

IceCold  |  October 28th, 2008 at 1:29 pm

Can you guys explain this

Originally ‘This system features an improved LCD screen
with the widest color gamut’

Now it says;
‘This system features an advanced LCD screen with the widest color gamut’

I really hope you guys fix this problem and actually make a pSP worth buying…I can’t waste money on crap.

119

the_icon  |  October 28th, 2008 at 1:44 pm

1: Fix the scan line

2: 4GB bundle was good

120

SDkngsht  |  October 28th, 2008 at 2:00 pm

@119…are you seriously confused by them changing the word “advanced” for “improved?”

seriously?

121

SDkngsht  |  October 28th, 2008 at 2:01 pm

PEOPLE…PICK UP THE MEMORY CARD FOR $19.99 AT TARGET OR $14.99 AT FRY’S.

it’s NOT THAT SERIOUS. they changed the bundle. half you people complaining weren’t going to get it in the first [DELETED] place.

122

LordNitsud  |  October 28th, 2008 at 2:11 pm

There goes my purchase, I’ve gotta have black. Don’t like silver, needs to match PS3…which is black.

123

Indicate  |  October 28th, 2008 at 2:19 pm

wow sony.

124

djratchet  |  October 28th, 2008 at 3:17 pm

Yeah. Real smooth. Here’s a better solution, discontinue THIS SKU when the 4 gig bundle is ready. Sheesh. And bundle the same game with it but no UMD movie.

126

Masterofallz  |  October 28th, 2008 at 4:33 pm

You guys ARE dumb. They never said anything about taking it off. This is just an alternative bundle.
:/

127

Miceincloaks  |  October 28th, 2008 at 4:52 pm

Is there any way a Final Fantasy PSP will ever come to the US?

128

djratchet  |  October 28th, 2008 at 5:15 pm

@127

read again. It clearly says that there will be no 4GB bundle, just the same R&C bundle but with a black PSP.

129

TJF588  |  October 28th, 2008 at 9:22 pm

[DELETED], Sony, why? I am a consumer who knows which games he wants, and these do not include Rachet & Clank OR some movie that I wouldn’t care to watch on a TV, let alone a gaming device. A black PSP-3001? Awesome (save for the screen issues I’ve heard about, which I seem to recall you similarly ham-handling). A 4Gig stick bundled with it? Awesome (since I’d like to get a first-party SD card without spending more for it than a single UMD game). A neat-lookin’ little download game? Cool (I’d give it a try).

Who. The. [DELETED]. Told. You. that scrapping a decent bundle was a good idea? The little [DELETED] that’ll buy whatever looks cutesy, or the parents that get that impression from Rachet? Look, no beef against R&C, since it seems to be a good series, for multiple reasons, but I don’t wanna pay for something that I don’t plan on using, and, as said, I don’t wanna shovel more money into a memory stick seperately.

tl;dr: Give those who actually know what they wanna do with a new PSP a BIT of a money-saver on this. Jeebus. Also, fix the screens before doing so, if you will.

130

TJF588  |  October 28th, 2008 at 9:43 pm

*reads someone explaining (to the extent of their knowledge/supposition) the screen issue*
Add an option to run the screen at fll capacity, similar to a brightness option or somesuch. If we’re being annoyed by the interlace method, we can switch it at the expense of battery life. Simple as that. Heck, you could even make it reset to interlace every time the system is turned back on if you want; just make it an option.

131

Korlithiel  |  October 28th, 2008 at 10:59 pm

Guess this means my next PSP will be “mystic silver” and I don’t get an extra 4GB stick to enjoy.

132

JonU  |  October 29th, 2008 at 6:15 am

Wow this really sucks. The only reason that there has been so much interest in the rachet and clank pack vs the standard piano black one is that most store wouldn’t allow you to pre-order it until 2 weeks ago. I’m really dissapointed that It’s gonna take another month. Great job SCEA.

IceCold  |  October 29th, 2008 at 8:03 am

@SDkngsht | October 28th, 2008 at 2:00 pm

Who said anything about being confused? If you are that concerned, read my previous statements. then maybe you can comprehend my last comment.

ITS SO WRONG FOR US PSP BUYERS,TOO BE TREATED WRONG IN THE SENSE THAT IN A COUPLE OF MONTHS SO FAR THEY HAVE COME OUT WITH 3 PSP MODELS,WHY DONT THEY FOCUS ON MAKING GAMES FOR ALL THESE MODELS,IT SEEMS THAT THEY RATHER KEEP DUPLICATING PSP MODELS BUT AGAIN I SAY WERE ARE THE GAMES,IAM A SOCOM PLAYER LOVE THE SERIES ON SOCOOM WITH THE EXECPTION OF SOCOOM TACTICAL STRIKE WHICH IN MY POINT OF VIEW IT WAS THE WORST OUT OF ALL THE SOCOOM GAMES,I WOULD LIKE TO TELL THE SONY PSP GAMES MAKERS WHY DONT U JUST PUT THE PLAYSTATION SOCOOM SERIES ON THE PSP,IT WOULD SELL AGAIN BUT FOR PSP,THATS SO SIMPLE,STOP WAISTING TIME IN PSP MODELS,AS MUCH EFFORT U PUT IN MAKING NEW MODELS WITHOUT GAMES JUST PUT THAT EFFORT IN MAKING GAMES CAUSE IT SEEMS SONY FORGET ABOUT THE PSP AUDIENCE THATS BEEN FORGETTING,AGAIN PLAYSTATION SOCOM SERIES PUT IT BACK ON THE MARKET BUT FOR PSP THAT WILL SOLVE THE PROBLEM WITH PSP SOCOM PLAYERS WE WOULD EAT THAT UP,,,,THANK YOU HOPEFULLY SOMEONE COULD LET THEM KNOW.

Serious qusestion please answer. Will you still be selling the PSP 3000 Core package? I already have a 4GB stick, (picked that up when they were $175.00). But I still want a black PSP 3000. Thanks in advance.

138

avball  |  November 1st, 2008 at 1:36 pm

I pre-ordered the black one with the 4gb memory stick too. I am NOT happy about this. I really don’t want part of my bundle wasted on ‘National Treasure 2′. I may just decide to not get a PSP this year. F off Sony.

139

richygoku  |  November 3rd, 2008 at 1:22 am

I dont see why everyone is so upset about the 4gb memory stick bundle. 4gb high speed memory sticks are about 30 bucks on newegg. I also do not understand why sony released a psp with such weak improvements. I have not seen the scanline problem in person but it is enough reason for me to stay away in itself.

Streamlining Hardware Lineup… Please! This is just a way of selling customers all the things that they do not want. This way Sony makes more money off of those who want the 4GB card.
4GB… that was a good deal
