Happy Birthday, PS3!

400 0

November 17 is a special date for us at SCEA because, as many of you fans know, it’s when we launched PLAYSTATION 3. Two years ago today, we delivered our next-generation console, providing consumers with a gaming and home entertainment system unlike anything in the market – the power of the Cell Broadband Engine, out-of-the-box HDMI support for 1080p resolution, and a Blu-ray drive for high-definition movies and expansive games. The PS3’s launch was also when the Resistance franchise was born, and the original title’s success has spawned a blockbuster sequel with Resistance 2 and a unique PSP installment with the upcoming Resistance: Retribution.

PS3 Anniversary Card

But that’s just what we started with, and PS3 has come a long way since November 17, 2006. If you stood in line the night before launch, the PS3 that you took out of the box when you got home isn’t the same system that it is today. We’ve added new features and enhancements that you all have asked for, such as Trophies, XMB access in-game, Remote Play with PSP, DLNA Media Server capability, and BD-Live support, to name just a few. Along the way, we became the first gaming system to be recognized by Guinness World Records for Folding@Home and, because of the strong PS3 install base, helped Blu-ray win the format war.

PlayStation Network has truly hit its stride with unique downloadable games and a video delivery service featuring movies, TV shows, and original programming that you can watch in HD with your PS3, or bring with you on your PSP. And with 14 million active accounts and 273 million pieces of content downloaded, we know that you’re thirsting for this digital entertainment.

Of course, most important to all of you is the game library, and we’ve seen exclusive titles launch that showcase the PS3’s capabilities, from Metal Gear Solid IV: Guns of the Patriots, which takes full advantage of Blu-ray’s massive 50GB capacity to deliver the best installment in the storied franchise, to LittleBigPlanet, whose infectious charm and user-generated content make it a genre-defying experience. There’s something for every type of gamer on PS3, and the efforts of SCE’s first-party development studios (the industry’s largest ) along with our third-party partners will continue to deliver knock-out titles.

Thanks to all of you, PS3’s momentum is stronger than ever. There are nearly 17 million PS3 systems around the world, and in the United States, PS3 hardware sales are up nearly 100 percent from where we were at this time last year. Software sales have tripled from a year ago. Yes, we’re proud about everything we’ve accomplished, and we’re even more psyched about where we’re going with our holiday software lineup (our best to date) and the new Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune PLAYSTATION 3 Bundle, which features a 160GB PS3 and is available now.

We wouldn’t be where we are today without your continued support and all of the feedback you’ve provided here on this blog. We don’t have a crystal ball, but we know that you can look forward to many great games and PS3 enhancements over the next 12 months, starting with the upcoming launch of PlayStation Home’s open beta, which will bring the PS3 community closer together. Then, just around the corner, you’ll have Killzone 2, inFAMOUS, and tons more. So please join me in wishing a happy second birthday to PS3!

  • I know I wrote pretty much, but just wanted to get my message across to the blog. Since it’s probably the only place the world would hear me out. I don’t really know if you guys (SONY PS3) are going to hear me but I’m sure the PSB readers are and I Hope they agree with what I’m saying. I will be saving those big comments I have just posted up because im going to keep posting them until someone responds to them. I’m going to sleep cya tomorrow.

  • Read my comments before this please.

  • Happy Birthday PS3 !

  • @syk1288
I hope your expecting a persistent voice chat on a game by game basis. I highly doubt this could be a system wide feature if in-game access to music and in-game screenshots are not. Sony could force developers to put these features in all games released in 2009, but I doubt that will happen. You have many good points, but I must say, with Sony, always lower your expectations. I would just add that in this quite troubled economy we’re currently in, Sony could do something really easy and good for their market share, lower the price of the 80GB model to $299.

  • sik… u need to turn off the caps and learn to make paragraphs… its much easier reading long rants that way >.>

As for your “comments” I disagree. I don’t want to pay for PSN just so my friends can log on my PS3…

The PSN has been vastly improved since launch and what Sony needs to focus on is (finally) rolling out Home (also add more ava’s to pick from! Where are the sackboys?)

  • Awesome, I saw for celebration Sony make the Killzone beta open! :P

  • Happy birthday to the best console in the known universe :)

  • hard to believe it’s already been 2 years since I was sitting in line waiting for my PS3.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY PS3!! And many more great ones to come!! ;)

  • Congrats, gang! Because of all of your hard work, the “PS3 has no games” argument is now invalid — and accordingly, I’m seeing much and much less of it!

  • It is staggering to look back at what has become universally agreed to as the single greatest console in the history of the gaming market.

    Graphics
The PS3 has the largest graphical power advantage ever in a console generation. Never before has there been a console that has such a gigantic power advantage the PS3 has over the Xbox 360. PS3 games don’t just look incredibly better than 360 games, they are running many times at 50 percent to double the resolution. And this is before the PS3 has Killzone 2 with graphics that people claimed were CG level and would not be possible until the PS4 at the earliest.

  • Online
Sony is teaching Microsoft how to do online right with the best online gaming service of all three consoles. Free to play for every single PS3 owner with dedicated servers for lag free online play with gigantic player counts for epic online battles. It must be humiliating for Microsoft to have their ‘big’ online game Gears of War only be able to handle 5vs5 players with no dedicated servers resulting in absurdly bad lag and host advantage problems.

    Home
It’s funny to look back over the past five to seven years that Sony has been talking about their virtual online world and read the old reactions to the ‘Sony hype’. It sucks if you aren’t in Home yet, but just think, you could be a 360 owner who is getting a crappy Mii ripoff instead.

    Hardware
Virtually silent hardware. Incredible reliability. Trivially easy harddrive upgrades with cheap off the shelf store bought drives. Compared to the 360 which is now universally regarded as the worst piece of console hardware ever created.

  • BluRay
The only console with real next gen movies running in breathtaking 1080p with insane quality audio. PS3+1080p TV+15 dollar a month Netflix rental account is movie heaven. Just think you could be stuck waiting around for sub-720p movies on the 360 wasting you Net bandwidth instead of just popping a BluRay disc in that shows up in you mailbox every few days.

    Exclusives
Sony has the single greatest first party developer lineup ever for a console.

20 first party developers making exclusive games for the PS3
    Nintendo only has 10
And pathetic Microsoft has only around 3

It should be obvious why all the Xbox and Wii fans are constantly crying about how ‘E3 is dead’ because they was nothing new shown. Only Sony has the insane first party developer army putting out huge numbers of exclusive titles.

  • I just installed Yellow Dog Linux 6.0 on my PS3. So for my PS3’s second birthday, it gets split personality disorder. Ha Ha.

    PSN: HerbertFortoon

  • “…to LittleBigPlanet, whose infectious charm and user-generated content make it a genre-defying experience.”

Oh, the irony in this statement, considering that Sony is going around deleting levels without warning or reason. AZURE PALACE IS OFFENSIVE? GIVE ME A BREAK.

I posted this in another entry, but it never got approved, so I’ll post it here again:

  • HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

  • Well I bought my first PS3 on the release in Denmark 23-03-07, but 2 weeks ago it died the horrible Red Blink Death, while playing GTA IV, OHHHH NOOOOOO so many games to play, so many trophies to be owned and so much sparetime I didn’t know what to do with, a life without a PS3 is like a journey in Death Valley wearing thermojacket and trousers, and since thats proberly a bad idea, I needed first aid ASAP – cleaned out my bankaccounts and ordered not one but two brand new PS3 (kids gonna get the other one for X-mas) – so I can once more cheer over LBP and Drive away from the cops in Midnight Club – not that I do 0=) – I always drive legally.

So I am all for SONYs PS3 an hope that they will live long and prosper.

    Big cheers from Denmark

    //WhiteWolf

  • Happy Birthday PS3! So enjoying Valkyria Chronicles now! :D

  • Happy Birthday PS3!
I’m with you from the beginning!
    My 320gb PS3 PWN!

  • HAPPY BIRTHDAY PS3!!!

  • Happy BirthDay PS3! And I remember the Lines(s)! 3 PS3(s) later we are really a PS3 Household! I remember the titles were a little thin at first, now I don’t have time to think bout playing every title I’d want to. Awesome Job. Recession or not, I hope this Holiday Season is good to Sony, then we’ll have even More people to hang out with in Home & play with online. Kudos!

  • You just get better with age! Happy Birthday!

  • happy birthday, to sony a to me too,

    cause I am celebreting that I have a PS3
    since two years.

  • Happy Birthday PS3!

And thanks Sony for creating this incredible machine.

I still have a vivid imagine in my head when I first saw the image of first PlayStation in a game magazine back in Brazil. I will never forget that.

Now give us Uncharted 2, Final Fantasy VII Remake, Dinocrisis, The Team Ico Game, Resident Evil 1,2 & 3 remakes.

    :D

  • Happy Late Birthday Ps3! I would give you exclusive games but I not i’m the one in charge!

  • Happy birthday, PS3!

One of the big factors for me buying it was the free online! I refuse to pay a subscription fee and I’m glad to see you’ve stuck with it.

Ignore what was said at post #246, because, not only is that not an important feature, charging for the PSN just to institute that would KILL the PS3’s online community.

I do think you need to lower the price for the 80 gig to $299, though, because while I truly believe the PS3 is the best system currently out there, the majority of consumers just look at price when it comes to system shopping. $299 for the 80 gig and $399 for the Uncharted bundle would be a good idea. $299 for a LittleBigPlanet bundle would be even better. Pack that game in and watch the community grow.

  • Hell yeah happy birthday!
    Good post!
I feel good knowing Sony realizes the PS3 fans and consumers are in part responsible for the success!

    I can’t wait to see what’s next!

On that note check out pandora.com
The reason I suggest this is, how cool would it be to have a Pandora icon right on the XMB under music? Yeah Sony! talk to Pandora and get a client rocking under music from the XMB! Take XMB Musice to the next level! =)

I have had my 60GB for 2 years already WOW!
Not a single hardware problem either!
My original launch PS2 is still going strong, how many years later now?

I hope my PS3 can match my PS2’s longevity!

    PS3 FTW!

    Happy Birthday!
    Thank you Sony and SCE!
Also a Special thank you to all of the first party and third party dev studios that do such outstanding work on the PS Platform(s).

    PS is worth every penny!

I have never enjoyed a console this much before. The ton of new games all in HD is just amazing. The Bluray drive, the media server, the wireless controllers, the PSN Store, Remote Play are just awesome…

Thanks Sony for creating a GREAT RELIABLE machine that does so much so easily.

  • Happy Birthday PS3! I bought you when your price was at 699!

  • Happy Birthday PS3!

Congratulations Sony for the awesome work!

Congratulations PSB guys for an outstanding channel for the community and thanks for all the guys from the game companies that came here to talk with us. Thanks, Jeff, Grace, Noel, everybody, I really appreciate your work!

BRING HOME AND LET’S MAKE BIG PARTY!!!!

    ;)

  • @261

    You comments are spot on!!!

  • Too bad the only PS3s available are watered-down versions (new80 and 160). You should bring back Backwards Compatibility to keep loyal PS supporters on the system instead of having them buying another console.

Give consumers a CHOICE, keep at least 1 premium version of the system (like the 60 and old80)

  • HAPPY BIRTHDAY PS3!

As one of the people standing in line (actually I was at the NYC private launch event and not the line) I know that my excitement and love of the system and its games has never been higher. I expect great things from Sony and their first & second party developers and very rarely have been disappointed.

    I do have a request.

Please put PS2 backwards compatibility back into the PS3. I understand a lot of people have PS2’s but its really a black eye on the PS3 in my opinion.

I dread the day something happens to my 60GB.

  • Now if you’d just get around to addressing the launch “no-scaling” issue you claimed you’d fix years ago…

  • Thanks and Happy Birthday!! Aready have Home beta, and Killzone beta so zero complaints from me. :)

  • wow it has been two years since the ps3 came out. two down and eight more to g, with a hole alot more games in the way.

  • Happy Birthday PS3… i wish you many more to come…

  • Congradulations…Now give me some cake!

Since the first Playstation I’ve been like the Neighborhood guru on Playstation.. with the only two magazines that do only playstation and now Core on the PSN.. free online blogs and all the info I get too keep my side of the world Playstation down.. keep up your end and I’ll keep promoting Playstation on my end…can’t wait for Home…so Happy birthday and many many more.

  • Otanjoubi Omedetou Gozaimasu PS3!!! I can’t believe it’s already that time of year again. We’ve seen so much happen for the PS3 in 2008 so I cannot wait to see what 2009 has in store!

  • So John, on the PS3’s 3rd Birthday are we going to see something done about this PS2 Backward Compatibility problem that your current SKU’s are suffering from? Or do I have to continue pestering Eric each time there is a firmware update that there is a complete lack of an emulator?
It’s nice that you listed all the great things that have come to PS3 in the last 2 years. However the loss of BC is really unacceptable and this BS about how we want larger hard drives is nonsense as we can upgrade the drive ourselves for a fraction of the difference between SKU’s. Stop screwing around and give us a network bundle with Resistance 2, Headset, PS Eye, and Super Stardust HD and maybe 20 extra gigs.
What about PSN access for PS2 and PS1 games, when I say access I mean keeping us logged on. I’d love to be invited to co-op or other online game while playing God of War or something to that effect. Quit pushing users off onto the PS2 which isn’t even capable of doing this.

  • Eternity_Viper_Snake
