New Peripherals Update: Wireless Keypad and AC Adaptor

Anand Agarwal's Avatar + Posted by Anand Agarwal on Nov 26, 2008 // Sr. Manager, Brand Marketing

Hey everyone, we wanted to provide an update on the new Peripherals we are launching this holiday. First, the Wireless Keypad for the PS3 will be available in stores starting the first week of December. Fans excited about PlayStation Home should definitely consider picking one of these up. The Wireless Keypad enables lightning quick chatting with other PlayStation Home community members. Plus, the unique touch pad mode allows for intuitive Internet browsing on the PS3 browser, and the short cut buttons will come in handy whenever you want to send a message or access your friend’s list from in-game.

Check out this video that we put together to see it in action:

The Wireless Keypad is a Bluetooth device that can be paired with the PS3 and charged seamlessly just by connecting them with a USB cable. You can use it with the PS3 system as well as any other Bluetooth enabled device, such as a smart phone, that has keyboard functionality. Given all these user friendly features, no wonder the Keypad just received a Consumer Electronic Show (CES) Innovation Award. It will be available at retailers for $49.99 (MSRP).

Second, an AC Adaptor for charging the DUALSHOCK 3 wireless controller, SIXAXIS wireless controller, Bluetooth Headset and Wireless Keypad will be available for $24.99 (MSRP) starting the second week of December. The AC Adaptor can simultaneously charge two compatible hardware devices that have a USB connector without having to turn the PS3 system on. And, it charges both the PSP-2000 and PSP-3000.

AC Adaptor

Unlike the PS3 controller charging stations that are available in the market, we wanted to come out with an accessory enabling PS3 users to not only charge their controllers, but also other accessories, such as the new official Bluetooth Headset and Wireless Keypad.

AC Adaptor

Enjoy!

Video is set to Private…

The keypad looks cool.

But a question about the AC adapter – can the headset be used as a mic when using the AC adapter? Or does it have to be plugged directly to PS3?

Yes, you can use the headset as a mic when using the AC adaptor as it is Bluetooth enabled.

I’m so excited about the keypad and think its a great design. Typing text messages now really sucks. It will come in handy with LBP and HOME Beta. woohooo

Off note: Can someone please let us know when Sony expects to launch the “PSP GPS Unit” in North America?

Does the AC Adaptor only charge official PS products, or can I use it for any device that can charge via USB?

16

+ r-nice on November 26th, 2008 at 7:06 am said:

I’m sure the Adaptor would work on most if not all USB devices.

Can’t wait to try out the keypad.

The AC adapter is pretty greedy of you Sony.

Instead of just putting the PS3 in a low power mode and keeping the USB ports on to charge the controllers and mic, you make us buy this?!

GREEDY

+ EnigmaNemesis on November 26th, 2008 at 7:23 am said:

Definitely interested in both!

29

+ jazzyrider on November 26th, 2008 at 7:23 am said:

Interesting. After seeing the ps3 keypad earlier I thought it would piggyback on the ps3 controller mini-usb port. I guess it makes sense if uses a significant amount of its own power. But why only 2 ports? With the loss of 2 usb ports on the ps3 vs the older ps3, I would’ve thought they put in a few more to accommodate that. C’mon Sony – get your act together!

30

+ EnigmaNemesis on November 26th, 2008 at 7:23 am said:

Though like #28 has said, I would like to see a function where the controller can still charge while the system is off like the Xbox 360 does.

31

+ Ziegler on November 26th, 2008 at 7:26 am said:

MSRP on the keypad is ridiculous!
The keypad costs $5 less than the controller? Really, guys?!

Also (and no I don’t own an XBox 360) the XBox 360 keypad is only $29.99 and includes a headset.

Why is the keypad so expensive? If it was bundled with a free game (like the PS Eye), then maybe it would be okay. Oh, and did I mention that the keypad costs less than the PS Eye ($39.99 MSRP)?

Bottom line: TOO EXPENSIVE GIVEN ITS UTILITY

Curious to see the reviews here for the keypad… Jeff, please link to those when they come out. Consider it bought if the touchpad mode really is intuitive and responsive. Sounds cool as I don’t use a keyboard or mouse currently.

The keypad looks awesome, but the price point is a bit high for me unfortunately.

I don’t need the adapter since I use my PC to charge my controllers and stuff.

I like that you’re putting out official peripherals though. Good work!

may be a dumb question but have to ask any way’s when plugged in (keypad) is there addtl. R1,R2 &L1,L2 buttons on the keypad or will we have to disconnect the keypad to access the buttons (i didn’t see that in the video) just a question thanks and great job :)

Like number 43 said, I don’t know about you guys, but I charge my controller with the USB cord through my laptop. Or through my DVR. Or through my audio system. USB ports are everywhere.

The keypad is very cool… I really like the touch pad mode feature… it would be neat to see that functionality implemented in games.

The adapter though… is lame. 2 devices? I just bought the Energizer controller charger (does the same thing and LOOKS awesome) and it will charge 4 devices. It cost me only $30… it is a FAR better deal:
