PS3 Firmware (v2.53) Update

Eric Lempel's Avatar Posted by on Dec 01, 2008 // SVP, PlayStation Network

Hi everyone, in the next PS3 firmware update (v2.53), coming soon, we’re improving the way the Flash Player works with the internet browser. In addition to being able to access more sites using Flash, you’ll be able to enjoy:

  • Full-screen mode playability
  • Live movie (using RTMP format) playability

Now it’s going to be even easier to enjoy web content on your PS3, in full-screen!

This should either should be included with a patch that fixes more than one issue or an optional, not mandatory update. Having to constantly download these updates is annoying, especially for people who don’t use the ps3 a ton.

I don’t wanna be rude but when the PS3 asks me to run the plug-in, I click “No” and still runs it. Another problem is the on-screen keyboard. It’s not as responsive and doesn’t finish my words or sentences like it used to before the v2.40 update. Also as for my browser again, it freezes… ALOT! lol I can’t even change my status on Myspace or Facebook at all. I can deal w/ it but it’s really irritating.

Thank you for listening. Hopefully we can fix these bugs and problems.

P.S.- A Paramore album for Guitar Hero: World Tour would be VERY satisfying! :D

Me and everyone i have talked to too, would really LOVE it if in the next update you guys could make it so that we could send movies, tv shows and music to each other using the messaging system on the psn. Who else thinks this would be a great feature.

+ zackmedia on December 8th, 2008 at 6:17 pm said:

hey guys love this update full screen looks good but you should really consider adding private in game voice chat and you should make all developers add custom soundtracks to their games i personally was very happy when in game xmb came out because of this feature but the thing is no games or demos hardly support this feature oh and about home i want to say that it is amazing so go on and release it but i love you guy to death im so happy you even made playstation so keep up the games and updates make ps the best in the world you can do this by really thinking about what true ps fans want and giving it but like i said before KEEP IT UP DONT STOP XBOX IS JUST ABOUT DEAD

Sony NEED to fix the 80022D11 NOW! A lot of people are getting VERY pissed off.

Ok, maybe a bit late but i think the update has caused more problems for the browser now. I tried hulu and just navigating around on that is hell, i got java errors, and machine froze up few times even when i actually made it to the XMB…still frozen and stayed like that for a minute. Hulu on Mac FTW

Just got my ps3 the other day..
Installed Linux,
Don’t like the fact there is no choice at bootup, its either load linux boot, then type command to start game os.
Or load gameos as default and then have to stuff around in the menu to change the default and reboot.
At least there should be a shortcut in a menu?
and give linux rights to gfx engine if they haven’t already the more open source games, the more reason people will wanna try linux and free games. :)
Don’t worry sony produce way better online and offline games than i’ve ever seen as an open source creation. I’ll still be buying plenty more sony games after xmas.
Love it other than that.

All this upgrading is great but what about the bravia sync? This continues to be a marketing tool for Sony but does work with Sony’s prize child. I’m not tech genius but this seems like it should have been a priority before Home and better internet browsing. Of course then that would make the BT remote obsolete impacting the bottom line. It’s a good thing Sony has a good product, otherwise MS here I come.

I’m not a complainer, any new features Sony gives us is great. However, I would like to see Sony add a feature that when you check the battery life on your Sixaxis or DualChock 3 controller-you can see how much percent of battery life is left or roughly how many minutes and when its charging it will show you how much percent it has charged it.

Another feature is to charge the Sixaxis or Dualshock 3 with the PS3 when it is on standby with the switch power switch turned on in the back and the red light on in the front. I guess the fans may have to be running at a low leve to do this, instead of leaving the system on. I noticed on my buddy’s Xbox 360 that it was a feature for them. Thanks guys.

Hey, Can you please increase the buffer size on streaming. I have a wireless network and it freezes every ten seconds or so. I have had same problems on other players but when I increase the buffer size, the problem is fixed. Please do something with this in you next firmware patch. Thanks

Sony for future updates I have a few suggestions:

I made a list of all of my favorite features requested by other users and added my own:

– Dual output for sound from the HDMI and Optical output at the same time.
– More music visualizations
– Useful applications (like a notepad, a planner, a calculator, etc)
– Get rid of information board and replace with a RSS feed sidebar detailing important events, video game release dates, PS store update previews, etc.
– In game video/audio chat with mute function
– In game music requirement for all future games
– A “play all” feature for video files
– File Organization tools for moving files up or down on the list
– Podcasting support
– Music in Playstation Store
– Instant Messenging Support: AOL, Microsoft, Yahoo, Google
– Skype support
– Changing Playstation IDs
– Improved Browser (Always use maximum size, Get rid of plug in message)
– In-game XMB Responsiveness
– Allow downloading of multiple items at once and download priorities
– Pandora and other internet music streaming
– Music video streaming service
– Netflix and/ or blockbuster Steaming movie support
– Bravia Sync

How about Skype for PS3 in a future update? With video chat and IM maybe???

+ boneyardweller89 on December 24th, 2008 at 10:20 pm said:

Actually I agree with the person before me. I would especially like cross-game voice chat if the PS3 can’t already do that.

After updating my system the other day, the unit can not read PS2, PS3 games, DVD, BD and even CDs. I’m pretty sure this doesn’t happen to all the units out there by reading the praises given to this update but $150 flat rate for service? Read the forums or better yet watch youtube. Frustrating…a $500 paper weight.

I attempted to download the update from my pc, and the link on http://www.us.playstation.com/support/systemupdates/ps3/pc_update.html takes me to a blank page (http://dus01.ps3.update.playstation.net/update/ps3/image/au/2008_0515_db48cbcde359982c065c2f5503204b67/PS3UPDAT.PUP)
I tried right-clicking on the download link and selecting “save link as” – I use firefox – and the ps3updat.pup file that it downloaded was only 2kb. What am I doing wrong?
