LBP Premium Level Packs + Costume Packs (Metal Gear Solid Edition) – on the PS Store 12/23

222 17

Just when you thought we were done with the Holiday surprises (Free Santa, Festive Level Pack, LBC1 winners, etc, etc) we have one more announcement up our sleeve…and it’s a dozy. Over the past few weeks, we’ve been biting our tongues, and finally we can reveal our latest offering (originally ‘somewhat’ announced at this years TGS) – Metal Gear Solid packs – Available 12/23 on the PlayStation Store.

Metal Gear Solid Premium Costume Pack
You’ve seen Solid Snake, but have you seen the rest of the cast? (well, ok…maybe you have… ) Meryl Silverburgh, Screaming Mantis & Raiden each have their own costumes from the MGS world. Get all 4 characters for the price of 3 at $5.99 on the PS Store, or pick your favorite and buy it individually for $1.99.

Metal Gear Solid Premium Level Pack
Now that you know about our Festive Level Pack, which fills your Pop-it tool with a ton of “Create” materials, objects and stickers, our Premium Level Packs introduce that and a whole lot more. So without further adeu…lets talk about what’s inside the MGS Level Pack (and this time we mean “Level” pack…)

First off, you’ll get a new Sackboy costume… the Gurlokovich Soldier.

Plus tons of new stickers (72), materials (12), decorations (10), and objects (18).

The objects are especially cool, why you ask…well, in addition to these ‘create’ materials, our Premium Level Packs include new Story Levels and they’re filled these new objects. That’s because, Media Molecule teamed with Konami to create 5 new Story Levels and 1 new Challenge Level for you to enjoy.

Now we couldn’t just build a level using the basic tools above, we need music, new sound effects, and new elements to provide a true MGS experience. So you’re getting these in the Level Pack, as well:

  • 3 new background music tracks
  • 1 new interactive music track
  • 1 new Metal Gear Solid themed ‘sound object’
  • New Plasma Ball ‘danger element’
  • New Laser Sight ‘gadget’
  • New functioning Searchlight lamp – for those special ‘exclamation mark’ moments
  • …and finally, the piece de resistance…THE PAINTINATOR (and Paint Switch)

Now, not only will you be able to run, jump, push, pull, swing, etc, etc in LBP, but now you’ll be able to splatter anything that comes between you and the end of any level. Once you equip the Paintinator, you can send sacksized paintballs flying by mashing on the R1 button and using the right stick to aim. Few things about flying paintballs, when Sackboys are hit with them, it feels like a very weak slap. You can also shoot ‘Brains’ from a safe distance and progress thru levels much easier. In addition to the Paintinator, we’re introducing a Paint Switch, so you can attach it to any object and set it to destruct after being splattered with enough paint. Here’s a video to show you the Metal Gear Solid Level Pack in action…

Add to all that, there are 12 new Trophies to unlock (and if you pay attention to the story at all, we’re not a big fan of Trophy Levels).

So now you see why we’ve been biting our tongue on this announcement. Tons of new gameplay, tons of new game-changing objects, and tons of create materials…all for just $5.99 (shesh…did that just sound like an infomercial?). We absolutely can’t wait to see what the community does with this pack and the new types of levels this will bring to the Share Planet.

And wait…there’s more…
So, here’s one of the coolest things about this pack…you guys know LBP is all about PLAY, CREATE & SHARE – well, you’ll be glad to know that this Level Pack holds true to that. For those who buy the Premium Level Pack, you get everything above (and hopefully a lot of fun in-between). If you don’t buy it, you’ll still be able to enjoy the MGS pack goodness. Here’s how:

  • Non-MGS Level Pack owners can PLAY the MGS Story Levels by joining a “host” who owns the pack and play the levels online together. Now you won’t be able to keep any objects, but you can have tons of fun just PLAYing.
  • MGS Level Pack owners will be able to CREATE levels with any of these items (including the Paintinator) and SHARE them online for everyone to play.

Again, we’re very excited to present this MGS Level Pack to you as a taste of how LBP can and will continue to evolve over time. With the support of our community, whether it’s creating new and awesome levels on the Share Planet or buying our Costumes and Level Packs, we’ll continue to provide more LBP goodness down the road in 2009.

So check back on the PS Store on 12/23 and treat yourself to a present this holiday season :)

Happy Holidays and have a Happy New Year

  • Thank You! This is very unique. I hope other Companies are wacthing this.

  • Regarding the Metal Gear Solid download: Now, that is simply cool!

  • OMG Sackboys can talk????

Is this something we can expect more of??

This stuff is AWESOME! I can’t wait till Christmas!!!

    :P

  • sorry for the double post but considering there was a sf pack from u guys how bout a dmc one! dante and vergil and nero as sackboys would be awesome and there already stuff there to make a creepy level to go with it!

  • Wow – talk about a big surprise! didn’t see this coming – new costumes and a new story level!

I knew LBP was a hit– just wish the industry recognized this and awarded GOTY not that MM winning studio of the year was bad. I think GOTY is the ultimate ‘trophy’! Maybe LBP2 eh?

  • Wow Media Molecule, Sony and Konami must have had a conference call and said…”hey, you want to get together and print some money”

Because that’s JUST what happened. Oh LBP/Rockband 2 you take my money every Thursday! Keep it up.

Now if you could only make SingStar part of this, it would be a trifecta.

  • Man, i promised not to spend anymore money on PSN, but now u go and do this.
    Projectile weapons in LBP?
    (AWESOME, jus like megaman)
What’s next? Hand to hand combat?(tekken?)
    or Weapon Combat?(soul calibur?)
    or Zombies?!?!(any zomby game?)

    But thats not possible.

    Is it?

  • Phenomenal my good sir!!!!!!!

I can’t wait to plunk the money down!

By the way Mark, don’t know if anyone has said this yet (not going to read through 106 comments lol) but isn’t it ‘doozy’ insteady of ‘dozy’? If I am wrong then I look like a total tool now but that is ok LOL!

BTW—-just my weekly friendly reminder, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE create a new program at SCEA that is like Europe’s ‘give 10k to an indie studio to develop on PS3’, or Japan’s PlayStation C.A.M.P. or Microsoft’s XNA so indie studios can make tech demos and the like on PS3! Thanks!

  • so damn cute haha i’ll defictly buy it!

  • This is the kind of thing that makes y’all top notch. First you deliver a stellar game, then you throw in all the free awesomeness, then when you make something with a price attached it’s not only kool content, but adds a whole newness to the game play. Y’all rock!

  • Question about DLC on hard drive and backing up…

This is mainly regarding content that is timed and goes away on a certain date but when you backup your HDD and if for whatever reason you may have a HDD crash, when you upload the backed up data to the new HDD, will you get DLC objects or do you loose the timed ones forever?
The other DLC you would just download again since it’s on the store… I suppose, until the day the store gets rid of items. ;)

  • OMG!

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!

Not a day one purchase for me, the MILISECOND it hits the store.

Thank you MM, now please make a FFVII and my personal favorite, FFXII inspired pack :D

  • First day purchase for me :o)

  • ASESOMESAUCE!!!

  • Really cool stuff!

A $9.99 bundle would be a great idea for this sort of thing.

  • (I meant “awesomesauce”.) [sigh…]

  • This is absolutely amazing. I’m not one to purchase DLC, but this pack is definitely worth it! I don’t think I’ve ever been psyched for any video game content before. I am absolutely up-in-arms about this one.

THANK YOU, Media Molecule, for teaming up with Konami to create this. Metal Gear Solid 4 is one of my favorite games, and I’m a huge fan of the Metal Gear Solid series in general. This pack adds so much more to the game, and I’m elated by everything you’ve done to implement it.

This is an absolute purchase for me, and I know I’ll be extremely satisfied with this pack. Also, great trailer you put together for it!

  • i always complain about your prices, but I can’t resist on this one. I’m buying the level pack, and the costume pack.

  • I jizzed in my pants.

  • This is awesome.

Can you guys get some Killzone-themed stuff ready for the launch of Killzone 2 in Feb? :)

  • AWESOME!!!!! i can NOT wait for this!!!!

I thought LBP was already perfect.. now whats better then perfect?

    Super perfect??

  • Simply awesome. Not sure who wouldn’t give it 5/5.

  • Oh SCE… you fail to dissapoint me! I am sold!

  • i will make this mine! i know you guys have KZ2 down the pipe some where… maybe closer to the games launch. i can only hope!

    peace,
    Lh

  • Sold! I don’t see how any MGS fan could pass this one up, its like a whole new game in LittleBigPlanet.

  • OUTSTANDING.

  • there is NO POSSIBLE WAY this can be real. i’m dreaming. LBP IS OFFICIALLY THE GREATEST GAME OF 08! oh man…perfect for xmas week.

this is the coolest thing i’ve read/seen this month. next week may be the greatest update ever. better than SF2 Turbo Remix (and I LOVE SF2)…better than PixelJunk Monsters Encore (can you tell them to make more islands…my girl & i are BEGGING for more PJ Monsters)…better than them all. for ANYTHING to top this next week you’d have to tell me God of War 3 was coming out on xmas eve. lol.

  • See, you’re pricing model is so screwed up.

On one hand, you’ve got all this great stuff, a costume, audio objects, materials, stickers, and even levels, all for 5.99 which is great.

    Then….

You have 4 costumes for the same price. Costumes, digital costumes mind you, aren’t worth more than 50 cents a piece. They’re strictly for show and have no function other than looks. It seems rather pricey to me.

3 bucks for 4 costumes and 6 bucks for the level pack… THAT, in my opinion, is a more fair pricing structure. I might even bite on the 9.99 bundle but a 7.99 bundle would be the sweet spot for me.

Aside from that, great work Media Molecule on LittleBigPlanet and congrats on the awards you’ve been wining, they’re well deserved.

  • Just plain awesome. No other words to describe.

Maybe you guys should host a poll of what games us lot would like to see in LBP?

    *cough*FF7*cough*

  • now this is what i call a level pack

  • It’s about time you guys released some DLC that is actually worth buying.

STUFF LIKE THIS is wat we want and are willing to pay for.

$2 or $3 for a helmet, shirt, and pants… not so much.

  • i’ve just soiled myself. now for that final fantasy pack

  • Heck yeah! Bring on the FFVII character/level pack! :D Although, for that one we need all the playable characters plus Sephiroth and Zack. :)

And, other FF level/character packs as well!

  • The Metal Gear Solid Premium Costume Pack is awesome, but as I have said before it is 10% of what the entire game cost. I will be picking it up though. (shakes fist)

The Metal Gear Solid Premium Level Pack is also awesome AND is an outstanding value. So obviously I will also be picking it up. Overall great job. Thank you Kojima, Konomi, Mm, and Sony for all of this awesome content.

I am hoping that you guys and gals at Mm are working like this with Square Enix also, for the FFVII packs.

  • Will there be 1080i/1080p upscaling support with this update?

    Hopefully!

  • I…..have to get this. My first DLC ever but I HAVE to have this.

And by my math both sets together comes to a cost of $12.81 (tax included). But that’s $12.81 well spent.

  • Nice very nice!

I need IN-GAME XMB MUSIC PLEASE!!!

  • OMG. DAY 1. More content like this and I’ll keep giving you money Sony, and MM, Konami!!!

    Can’t wait!!

  • This is PURE AWESOMENESS guys, I’ve picked up every single DLC so far and this is by far your best, congrats and keep up the great work, SOLD!!! :D

  • HOLY CRAP!!

That is killer. I only expected costumes, but you guys went and added all kinds of amazing things.

Guess use LBP owners can gloat even more to those who didn’t buy LBP (and if you didn’t shame on you.) Can’t wait for this pack, it’s going to own so much.

  • Wow, that’s a lot for such a small price. Great deal! Well done guys!

Also, I want to thank you for updating the search function in LBP. It’s a lot easier to search for levels now, and great idea allowing us to purchase new DLC through the game rather than in the store.

  • SOLD!!! This will be sweet I hope we get something like this with the Final Fantasy VII characters. I think an uncharted pack would be sweet too. Any word on when we can create online with friends? Also what about WATER & New hazards?

  • I’m speechless….. this is so awsome for only $5.99. Please do something similar with the Sephiroth costume.

  • you should ran that trailer as a commercial, that alone will bring you more $$

Best DLC ever, until the Killzone pack i presume

  • awesome!!! day 1 purchase 4 me!!

  • OMG!!! Thank you, thank you, thank you guys!!! I just can’t thank you enough, this is a really good… no, make that GREAT present! I love you guys at MM, SONY, and Kojima Studios!!!

    …did I mentioned, THANK YOU!!?

  • Wow! Mark, to echo to what you said earlier, “The game has changed”. This is true in so many ways. Certainly, the Paintinator changes the game itself fundamentally, and the license extended to those who CREATE and SHARE to be able to use items in this pack in their creations is a clear demonstration that a labor of love made by a fan of an IP should be looked upon as homage, not trademark infringement.

Media Molecule’s little add-on that could has done something else, though, and the ripple effect of this may (and should!) be felt through the entire PSN. They have demolished the current standard for premium in-game content. The laundry list of items included (a costume, stickers, objects, music, and the Paintinator!) for the price shows that it’s not necessary that game owners make substantial continued investments to maximize the value they get out of a game. Indeed, the substantial investment some games request of their owners don’t add value to their respective games at all…just content – “stuff,” as George Carlin once mused. The bar has been raised, and our expectations along with it. The game has changed – hopefully irrevocably.

  • Wow, good value for the money. Can’t wait for the next themed pack!

  • I’m just starting to realize what a huge gold mine you guys have in LBP. The possibilities are truly endless and will continue to suck my cash faster than my baby mama!
