Crash Commando Available Tomorrow on PSN – First Tips and Strategies

Posted by Olof Gustafsson // CEO, EPOS Game Studios

We introduced Crash Commando to you last week, and now that the game is out tomorrow on PlayStation Network, we wanted to talk more about the game modes and give you some tips about how to rack up the kills.

CRASH_3D_Artwork

The game modes:

DEATHMATCH and TEAM DEATHMATCH
Free-for-all frenzies or team-based skirmishes. Reach the target score first to win! In these modes, bots can be included offline as well as online.

MAP OBJECTIVES
Map Objectives is a game mode exclusive to multiplayer. It is based on having two teams – an attacking team and a defending team. The attackers have to meet set objectives while the defenders try to stop them.

A Map Objectives game is played in steps. At the beginning only some objectives are available, and by accomplishing them, new ones become available until they have all been met and the attackers win. Points are awarded to the attacking team depending on met objectives. The defenders can win by defending efficiently to force the time to run out, since the attackers have to meet objectives to gain extra time. This means that an efficient defense can cut an attack short.

There are two types of objectives games; Espionage and Sabotage:

Crash Commando - Data terms

ESPIONAGE: DATA TERMINALS
In Espionage, the attackers need to download data from four data terminals scattered across the map, and bring them home safely to be uploaded to HQ.

Crash Commando - Control pnls

SABOTAGE: CONTROL PANELS
In Sabotage, the attackers need to destroy three clusters of control panels. Each cluster contains three panels and each is destroyed by running up to it and planting a bomb on them. It takes time for the bomb to go off so it is important to guard the panel until it does explode, since defenders otherwise can get there and defuse them.

Strategy tips:

As we have been playing the game like crazy, we have a few insider tips for you, so you can get an upper hand on people while they are busy figuring this out by themselves!

The number one tip that comes to mind is how to aim using the right stick! The best and easiest way to learn to get the bullets to end up where you want them – namely, in the bodies of your enemies – is to have the right stick constantly at a full tilt in the direction you want to aim, and adjust it using a circular motion. Basically you never should release the stick from full tilt while aiming and firing, unless you need that thumb of yours to, e.g., push a button to go to the other side or reload.

The second tip is to get to know each weapon’s strengths and weaknesses – knowing them, you will soon figure out how you can use the environments to your advantage with your weapon against your enemies.

The third tip is that C4 is a really good counter to vehicles because when they’re attached to a vehicle (or soldier J), they kill instantly when detonated.

Crash Commando_2

The fourth tip is to keep track of your jetpack fuel meter since you do have a limited supply that begins to regenerate quickly when you’re back on your feet again. You use it to get to higher grounds as well as in a very useful move called “spinning.” To spin, push the left stick down and slightly left or to the right while pushing the jetpack button, and you will spin away quickly in the chosen direction as long as you still have jetpack fuel left.

The last tip is to actually select your survival bonuses when you receive them during a game. You don’t want to miss out on them – they can give you regenerative health (together with a small max health boost), faster running speed, or quicker jetpacks and the ability to kill people by spinning near them. And you can have all three at the same time, if you manage to earn it.

Finally

We have been playing against the “same-old” players for quite a while now, and we really look forward to be playing the game with and against new players online for greater challenges (the Sony producers are easy meat). We might have the upper hand for a little time until you get the hang of it, but after that we are counting on getting our butts kicked.

If you have any questions about the game, we will try to answer them as best we can on the blog.

We hope to see you online – let the frag-fest begin! The game is available on PSN tomorrow for $9.99, so what are you waiting for?

If so, can two people on the same system go online and play against other people?

This looks sharp… but will there be a demo?

‘Cause here’s a little strategy for you: show people in a crap economy what their money is going to get them and they’ll be more eager to part with it. ;-)

misaksson replied on December 19, 2008 at 1:58 am

Nope, Olof really really wanted you to listen to his soundtracks for a while at least! Nah just kidding :), it will definitly be considered to be added in future patch improvements/DLC!

DLC to add Ninjas plz? LOL JK either way looks pretty cool–like what Warhawk would be like with 2D gameplay—actually the art style is very similar to Warhawk–but that is a good thing :-)

Voice and trophies and $9.99? I’m in!

69

TouchyEd  |  December 17th, 2008 at 3:10 pm

It drives me nuts when developers post these articles announcing games they want us to buy, but then don’t even bother to answer any questions.

misaksson's Avatar

misaksson replied on December 18, 2008 at 2:10 am

We try to answer the questions we have answers for as soon as we can – though due to the time difference between Europe and US, Brian and Daimion has helped us out answering questions while we’ve been sleeping. Then we are also busy working on some really cool ideas for DLC. :)

Ghostm  |  December 17th, 2008 at 3:11 pm

I didnt know this title didnt have Trophy support. Guess I’ll pass on it.

It does, as other people have pointed out — it was mentioned in last week’s post.

Hope you’ll reconsider, because it’s a blast to play, no pun intended. :D

71

TehGreenFox  |  December 17th, 2008 at 3:29 pm

It has Trophy support

I will buy this tomorrow. I like supporting studio that get games on the PSN on time.

HairyToeKnuckles  |  December 17th, 2008 at 3:40 pm

Time limit in the screenshot = pass.

Brian Dunn's Avatar

Brian Dunn replied on December 17, 2008 at 5:02 pm

Basically it’s multiplayer gameplay style, so matches are over when either the score limit is reached, or when the timer runs out. Like if you create a match with a kill limit of 1000, but a time limit of 15 minutes, match is over when someone gets to 1000 kills or when time runs out.

76

jazzyrider  |  December 17th, 2008 at 3:48 pm

Like a few others have asked– demo?

Also, will there be more games that support remote play, ie playing games via PSP? This looks like a great game to leverage the remote play feature. I bought Bionic Commando and loved playing that on the PS3 and PSP. Just wish we can see this game utilize a seldom used feature.

To be honest, this is how the Spike Video Games Awards should of been… Mayhem FTW!

78

Ghostm  |  December 17th, 2008 at 4:04 pm

Good to hear that there’s Trophy support. Will you guys have demo up too?

79

Ghostm  |  December 17th, 2008 at 4:09 pm

@ 68

PS3 owners are allergic to headsets! Even when the games have in-game voice PS3 owners dont use it. That’s why I hate playing on PSN. Warhawk, R2, CoD4/5, Burnout etc…

80

Duckman5  |  December 17th, 2008 at 4:12 pm

No splitscreen? No buy then. Seriously I am saddened that developers think that splitscreen is unnecessary. Whatever happened to the old days where playing Goldeneye with your real friends was fun? Now game devs think that just because they have online splitscreen is completely outdated. Guess what? It isn’t.

81

stuna1  |  December 17th, 2008 at 4:26 pm

I know that this is off topic, just a little heads up. I don’t know how many of you all read GAME INFORMER magazine, seriously I don’t know why I do. Anyhow I noticed in the December issue it has KILLZONE2 as multi-platform ps3, x-box360, and pc . Of course x-box360 owners are going to run with this, but that is not the reason behind this post. Looking at the probabilities that x-box360 and pc owners will think it will come out on their respective systems it’s likely to cause a surge in x-box360 console sales with people getting the console before the game in the hopes that it’s true, some not even bothering to find out if it’s true. Sorry about the long post.

On another note sooo looking foward to CRASH COMMANDOS, Keep up the good works SONY !!! ……

Chaos_Bladez  |  December 17th, 2008 at 4:39 pm

This is like a 2D Warhawk! :D

LN_MEXWARRIOR  |  December 17th, 2008 at 5:08 pm

Hello Brian Dunn,

Will there be IN-GAME XMB Music access? I really hope so since this feature is available for you to add. PLEASE!?!

Also I believe there is no offline multiplayer… which I hope you guys can consider adding soon.

misaksson replied on December 19, 2008 at 1:03 am

Currently the game does not support XMB music access nor offline multiplayer. When it comes to addressing feature improvements and in what order we will address them in the future is pending feedback from the players of Crash Commando now that it has been launched. We cannot give any promise at this time when or if these features are added – though we can promise you that we are listening and putting in our best efforts to support and improve it!

85

acerazer1  |  December 17th, 2008 at 5:09 pm

And to comment on what 81 said, I had GameInformer for a year, that was enough for me, haha.

86

xStatiCa  |  December 17th, 2008 at 5:09 pm

Youtube video upload support would be a nice feature. I hate having to setup a camcorder in front of the TV to try and get some video of gameplay. Video and screenshots only help to promote the game for free for developers. I am surprised more developers do not put the effort in to get this feature in.

87

mrro82  |  December 17th, 2008 at 5:21 pm

Any word on custom in-game music?

Thank you! We’ll be armed and ready to greet you with bullets when you come online! :) The commando level cap is at 25 – reaching that you will also be rewarded a well-earned golden trophy!

Is there an official forum dedicated to the game in order to discuss the game in general and be able to get in touch with the team, in we have some questions? Thanks

Hey Daimion, can we all have the game free for an early Xmas gift? :P

92

Just to be sure, when you say the game will be out in Europe as well, you mean tomorrow right? Or is it more like “it will be released… sometime”.

93

MidgetguyII  |  December 17th, 2008 at 6:54 pm

Hehe! Hilarious trailer! I’ll definately check this one out! (Too bad I can’t get it tomorrow… but I will purchase it once I get the money, I’ve been too busy buying darn Christmas presents for folks!) But, it looks like an awesome game! Here’s hoping for a demo sometime soon so I can still get my fill before I can actually purchase it? *wink *wink :)

94

Mr_Pickle  |  December 17th, 2008 at 6:56 pm

Is this game also out in Europe tomorrow or just America?

Europe as well. Because of the time difference, it may already be out in Europe.

95

Definitely getting this one… been looking forward to it for quite a while now.

Question: Will it support clan tags? I’d love to get a group of my clannies together on this… or at least a party system?

@EPOS Game Studios
I was wondering if you guys are fans of soldat cause this game seems inspired by that game

misaksson's Avatar

misaksson replied on December 18, 2008 at 4:23 am

Crash Commando have been inspired by a lot of different titles released over the last two decades. We have enjoyed ourselves playing many good shooters over the years – where Soldat is one amongst others such as Warhawk, QuakeWorld, Resistance, TeamFortress2, Battlefield & Unreal Tournament. All the good ones :)
