PS3: Not Just For Games Anymore

Posted by Kim Nguyen // Marketing Manager, PLAYSTATION 3

Hi Everyone,

Starting tonight, our Video Delivery Service campaign officially launches with our first airing on Monday Night Football, but we’re giving our loyal fans an early look right here.

When the Video Delivery Service launched on July 15th, we broadened our content offering to include TV shows and movies to make the PS3 the total entertainment package. With nearly 1000 full-length movies and 2700 TV episodes for download onto the PS3 or PSP, the Video Delivery Service brings you digital entertainment right into your living room (popcorn not included). So check out great titles like The Dark Knight, Hancock, Iron Man, Family Guy, and much more.

The TV spot uses humor to convey that the PS3 is not just a gaming machine but also a “movie downloading machine” when a guy tries to win over his skeptical girlfriend. You’ll have to watch the TV spot to find out how this classic guy vs. girl face-off plays out to see who wins in the end.

And don’t forget, you only have until December 31, 2008 to save $150 on the purchase of a PLAYSTATION 3 by signing up for a PlayStation credit card!

We know you guys are a vocal group and we look forward to reading your comments. Enjoy and roll the video!

Can you please tell me, Sony, exactly *when* it *was* for games?

There’s been a grand total of *one* exclusive that I’ve found interesting this year for PS3.

Valkyria Chronicles. (And yes, I was one of those 33,000 that purchased it)

Now that you’re done screwing around with Home, can we PLEASE have some EXCLUSIVE RPGs??????

Sony must start making tough, smart decisions…more marketing, video streaming to rival Netflix, subscription based video\tv download not individual, some sort of system price cut.

Msft runs frequent TV commercials, makes deals with netflix and others (get a free xbox when you buy a certain tv at best buy) WTF! See for yourself: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?id=pcmcat169100050015&type=category

C’mon Sony!!!

I like the living room layout of the commercial. Wish mine looked like that. Anyway, cool that we’re seeing MNF plus Sony PS3 commercials!

You can’t download every tv show you want to.

The Video Store is good in general, but I do have some problems with it. First, every single movie should be available for rental. Having the Dark Knight only for purchase was a real turn off, and the same goes for Hancock and other new releases. Also, more HD needs to be available as well.

umm….you guys mind crossing the border and bringing us those movies with you? Canada….remember us…i payed more for a ps3 than anyone in the us cuz i got it at launch and it was priced more in canada, this is sooo not fair to live soo close to the states and not recieving stuff like this. @2

Don’t expect the add outside North America as the Video Store is only available there.

Ah sexism. Of course girlfriends and females in general wouldn’t be interested in games and instead would just use a PS3 to watch chick flicks, so you can totally justify your purchase to them! How whacky! Way to appeal to the surprisingly vast female gaming demographic!

sony my idea is you need to make a long tv spot 30 min to 1hr show the world what the playstation3 really has to offer. start with the games. then the movies. how you can do the rental or download to HDD. that it’s tv show or movies the different kinds you are offering. then show storing picture and using them as backgrounds and how you can suff the webb for information. and last but not lest how if someone else has one and online access. how easy it can be to talk with them with tex, mic, camera. don’t forget to talk about blue toothrange of stuff. you got the best out there but the little that y’all show will not sell it leave nothing to gess. ( I FOR ONE KNOW THAT THIS IS THE #1 console so let everyone see it too!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ƞ

It’s nice that there are piles of comments asking about when this service / the other services will be in Canada, as there is in every related post, and it is never addressed.

Netflix would have been better. PS3’s hubris is gonna end up killing it.
