PSN Sign-in Coming to PlayStation.Blog Next Week

176 18

You asked for it, we talked about it – the day is nearly at hand. We’ll be implementing PSN Sign-on for the PlayStation.Blog this coming Tuesday. Once again, we believe this will contribute to a better community experience, and more relevant discussion here on the Blog. As the PSN ID is now the connective tissue between PS3, PSP, and PS.com, this move also lays the groundwork for further enhancement to your user experience.

You’ve probably got some questions. We’ve got answers:

What changes are being made?
Starting on Tuesday of next week in order to comment on the PlayStation.Blog you will need to use a PlayStation Network ID.

Will my PS.Blog login still work?
No, starting Tuesday you will be asked to use your PSN ID to comment on the blog. If you have a PSN ID, then you’re ready. If you don’t have a PSN ID you should grab one now.

What happens to my old comments?
They’re still there, and in fact, when you log in for the first time using your PSN you will have the option to merge your PS.Blog account with your PSN so you retain your old comments.

What about my screenname?
When you merge your PS.Blog account and your PSN ID, all your past comments will now appear under your PSN ID.

What will happen to my avatar?
As much as we loved Gravatars, we’ll now be using the PSN avatar which can be selected through your PLAYSTATION 3.

What is this merge you speak of?
Starting Tuesday if you have an existing PS.Blog login you will be asked to merge that with your PSN ID. Once linked you’ll use your PSN ID for all comments.

What if I’ve never commented and don’t have an existing PS.Blog account?
What? You’ve never commented? Say something! Seriously though, go grab a PSN ID and you’ll be ready to go Tuesday.

Where can I get a PSN ID?
You can get one here.

What if I forgot my password for my PS.Blog account?
No worries, you can retrieve it when you’re merging it with your PSN account.

How long do I have to merge accounts?
We haven’t determined how long it will be available, but at least a month or two. If/when we determine to take down that function, we’ll let you know.

We’re very excited about these changes, and we hope the migration experience quick and painless – like death by ninja. The changes will be rolled out Tuesday morning (early or late, depending on when and where you wake up), so please try it out, grab a PSN ID if you haven’t already, and let us know you made it through unscathed!

Oh, and how do you like the comment-reply counter? Seems that nearly every post has some red replies these days, which is a good thing.

  • @ Jeff’s comment to my response

You post stories and what not, I doubt you ever say anything that will send the fanboys into a rage besides the occasional no comment. I on the other hand speak my mind and I am sure i’ve rustled a few feathers while my time here.

Also more avatars must have more avatars! Aaybe even a pay to have your own avatar for like say .99? Cheap way for SCEA to almost make a buck lol.

  • What happens to us Europian readers?

  • jeff how about letting us create our own avtar like you guys did with the theme creation tools

  • Looking forward to the update~! Please don’t stop we still need some innovation for Sony.

  • Wooo we are going to need more avatars. the extremely limited selection we have right now just is not going to cut it in the forums.

  • Can I use my European PlayStation ID to log in here? I don’t have American one :(

  • I LOVE the comment reply counter thanks for asking. But I think if I click on it, it should bring me to a page with ONLY the replies along with the comment it was replying to. So I dont have to scroll through the pages of comments just to find the replies.

Also I always check back to see if I have been replied to, I think it would be better if there was a feature that emailed me whenever I get replied to. (If there isnt one already)

  • About Time…My brain Hard Drive has trouble remembering so many passwords. Thank You for doing this!!
    psn:frostquake

  • Wonderfull news, except for the avatar stuff.

Now I just need a way to use the face of my Home avatar, and that’s will be a wonderfull news.

I know here is not the place to discuss it, however PSN avatars are so lame. Even if Sony is planning to add a few new crappy LBP avatars (I don’t like LBP), this will not change the lame aspect of the PSN avatars.

I bet we will never be allowed to set our own picture for the PSN avatar (copyright issue, content moderation, etc) however letting me grab a picture of my Home avatar and use it as my PSN avatar is a great feature IMO (obviously IMO). Isn’t it ?

  • Hey Jeff!

Hope you can answer this: when i log in playstation.com with my PSNid i can’t see my trophies, that sucks! Probably now with Playstation Blog merge the same thing will happen.. So, my question is when it will be available to see trophies at the websites?

PS: Sorry for my bad english, im brazilian! :P

  • New avatars are coming soon, thank god! For the millions of people actually using the PS3; 240 avatars is just not enough. We want to see loads more including more adult ones, as you have to admit they are very childish avatars IE colored turds LOL.

People say we are unable to have our own avatars due to copyright laws but why does that stop us on the PS3 but not on the forums?? I would like to put a pic of me or my choice as my avatar just like you can on the eggbox (i dont own one btw LOL)

One other thing will the EU be getting new avatars as thats where im from the UK =oP

  • Hey Jeff,

Will we be able to change our PSN ID for another one without loosing anything? or is it possible already and i dont konw how?

  • Kudos to the update. Jeff Jeff Jeff, Please encourage full API i.e. trophy support so we can access trophy status online as we can on the PSN. Playfire is the only thing close [For creating a card/signature/tag that shows trophy progress.] Why won’t/can’t Sony enable the full profile online? Too expensive to implement? If so, just make the API available to sites like playfire so we don’t have to ‘manually’ add trophies. Please, Please, Please! Lugoves

  • This is nice to hear. Can’t wait to have 1 less account password to remember! =D

  • Great news on the PSN integration, I’m sure it will be much better having a single sign-in ID for the blog.

Hey Jeff, any chance of a mobile version of the PS.Blog? Maybe a PSP-optimized one? :)

  • @ 61 yes but who want to go through all that just to post a fake story? they must have a sad life if they do that, we will see by wednesday. i think were going to have less of them and if am reading the article right .

  • will be able to check and send messages to our PSN friends list?

  • This looks very cool! But please make a client for the iPhone ;-)

  • I guess EU PSN accounts will log in fine?

  • Awesome! Can’t wait.

  • Any idea when PSN ids will begin to include some type of trophy count? There are quite a few DIY sites that will host your count in an image and generate html code for your signature, why hasn’t this been integrated into our PSN ids yet?

  • Now we can have more contests to give out PSN games to people! I want LOTS OF CONTESTS!
and anywho custom avatars for PSN accounts would be nice if you could have a word to the higher ups… eh?

  • Jeff, I’ve read through the comments but please excuse me if I’ve missed the answer.

Some time back it was mention that the PlayStation Blog would somehow be used for SCEE account holders as well as SCEA will this be happening at the same time?

I know people are free to register irrelevant of the region are based in (I have) but it would be nice for this site to cover global news rather than just SCEA which it does now.

    Cheers

  • This IS my PSNid,
-change is a good thing, keep it coming!!

  • This rocks!!! Its about time you guys did this…. Thanks!

  • This is amazing news, but we need more avatar selections.

  • @ the reply to the reply to my comment, I really think that it’d be better to only allow users with accounts to rate the blog post.

Even on the perfect posts you guys make, I feel that some come to the blog just to rate poorly. If you know what I mean >_____>

  • Please let us reply to others comments.

  • EAGLES TOMORROW JEFF!

Also, I’m glad that this is coming – it’ll be sweet considering it will be the foundation for more features to come. Keep up the great work with the blog.

  • This is awesome, and thanks for adding reply to other comments add-in. That’s what I needed.

  • I agree with post #113. Please release the PSN API for gamer cards, trophy counts, stats, gamer data, etc. Sony needs to do this for the online community to spread and grow.

I am a die hard Sony PS3 fanboy but I have to admit, microsoft has the lead for the pc/integration and online community (allowing online integration with acheivements, pc/console chat or message communications, deeper player status tracking, leaderboards, etc.)

I am still holding on that one day PS3 owners will have these items…but it is a downer for PS3 community sites to force manual entry to create what could be pulled automatically and accurately. Please release the PSN API!!!

  • Jeff PLEASE tell me there is some new avatars coming. I already use all the one available in the avatar selection menu. We need more. I don’t care if we have to pay for them, just give us some new one please

  • This would only really be effective in making the discussions more relevant if you made it so that people can only get a PSN ID through either a PS3 or PSP console. That would essentially prevent anyone who doesn’t own a playstation from posting here. As it is now, it’s just as easy for trolls to get a PSN ID through the website as it is for them to get a blog account. Of course this would also prevent anyone who only owns a PS2 from posting here, but there isn’t a whole lot of relevant discussion about the PS2 on this blog anyway.

  • Hello everyone! I’d just like to say that I’m enjoying all of the previous, current and upcomming updates across the PlayStation brand. They are very much appreciated! There’s one thing, that may or may not have been mentioned before that I think would be a great feature. What if, when the PS3 signs you on to PSN, weather it be automatic or manually, the Internet Browser recognizes that you have signed on. I think this will make it that much easier to come to the blogs, forums and specific game websites(ie. Resistance, PAIN & SOCOM, just to name a few) I’m only suggesting this because the PS3 actually has a browser. Why not combine it more closely to the PSN in that manner. Since we’re getting a universal sign on anyways. I for one use and love the browser. So much so, that I’m finding it more difficult to manuver a mouse than the left analog stick, wierd. If anyone reads this, including that Sony staff, and would like to colaborate my PSN ID is “LeoDaLyon” without the quotations of course…

  • @Jeff
Any chance we’ll see an update to the PS web store? I know I can use the psp media manager, but with the store built into the psp now, I don’t really see the point. I would like to be able to browse the store for both psp and ps3 from a web browser. I hate to mention that other console, but one feature I’ve just discovered and rather enjoy is the ability to browse and make purchases from a computer and then the purchases are automatically downloaded once I turn the system on. Any chance we could get something like that in the future for ps3?

  • Sounds great, looking forward to what the merge brings us.

  • Great feature! Any news on a system update coming?

  • I for one like the idea puts us on comming ground. Too see some one off the blog in a game seals that gap.It will be nice to mix the two worlds of comments and the thang the comments are made for. Gives us common issues like the avatars thing.

thanks keep up the great work

  • Will users be able to log on the PSP forums with the PSN-id because the curent setup is broken?

  • @Jeff’s response to poster 112 – When will some form of service be availabe to allow us to change our PSN ID’s? Even if you can only use it very rarely (every 6 months or something) or it’s somewhat expensive ($10+), at least having the option would be nice. don’t make it exploitable so people can be d-bags and just change their name at will, but at least give us SOME kind of option. Being able to make a new PSN id at any time is great and all, but being unable to transfer trophies makes that pretty worthless.

  • Jeff,

Yes but if i make a new PSN ID, i will loose my trophies and everything right? or is there a way to transfer them?

  • Nevermind, lol i think it dosnt affect this. PSN ID and my account are 2 different things lol

  • Avatar suggestion….
It would b incredible if we could make our own avatars send it to you guys, then if its okay(mature 4 all ages, not racist in any way), be able to post it on the site where you and other people and download, and use it.

Now that will be user created content for ya

  • @ 2

You are sooo wrong. You dont need to own a PS3 to get a PSN ID. You can create one for free from playstation.com. I have a good question regarding this issue. Will sony count these none PS3 owner PSN IDs when they are going public with their number?

  • I think it’ll be great when you send me prizes because of my PSN ID. *hint hint*

  • What will happen to my avatar?
As much as we loved Gravatars, we’ll now be using the PSN avatar which can be selected through your PLAYSTATION 3.

Then you guys need to get more avatars on the PSN now. Hundreds more.

NO one asked this Question !

I have 2 Blog ID’s right now.. Can I convert Both to my PSN ID??????????

The Main Reason I created 2 was that when I made my first one I decided to change my mind and Wanted a Better PSN ID and stuck with my PSN ID
    ——————————————–

    Thanks Skater_Ricky,

  • my blog name now is my PSN id ;( my ps3 gone hope it’ll be back before killzone 2 come out

  • That’s cool that we can now have one unified sign-in for all areas of ps.com now Jeff.

Just to beat a dead horse, we need more avatars! Also, speaking of avatars, I know a lot of people want to be able to make their own avatars. What about having one avatar for everyone to see, and a seperate avatar for people only on your friends list (similar to what’s on that other system?) so we could put our PSEye to use?

I think I already know the answer to this lol.
