Upcoming PS3 Firmware (v2.60) Update

Hi, everyone, we have a system software updates for PS3 coming soon, and I wanted to provide you with a sneak peak at the details.

The PS3 firmware update (v2.60) is designed primarily to enhance the system’s media capabilities. The key feature is a new Photo Gallery application, which delivers a suite of tools for sorting through and displaying your digital photo collection. Digital pictures can be organized in groups according to various criteria, including the camera used to take the photos, the event date and time, colors in the photos, as well as the number, ages, or facial expressions of the people pictured. You can also create slideshows set to music and build photo playlists with an easy-to-use interface. The Photo Gallery application will need to be installed separately from the XMB after you update your PS3’s firmware. To install the Photo Gallery application, go to the Photo section on the XMB, select Photo Gallery and press the X button.

The 2.60 update also includes:

  • Guest access to PlayStation Store – This enables non-PlayStation Network members to browse through the storefront to check out the latest games, demos, videos, etc.
  • DivX 3.11 support – Videos in this format can now be played on PS3.

Here’s a video walk-through of firmware 2.60 that shows off some of what the Photo Gallery can do.

As always, we look forward to hearing your feedback.

  • While I’m at it, how about the ability for the new photo software to access photos from my computer’s hard drive? I’d rather leave my photos on my computer than have an additional set for the PS3.

  • when are we going to finally be able to listen to our own music while playing a game? thats one really cool feature on the xbox that i thought would surely be possible on my ps3… whats up with that? ive seen many requests for personal in game music from the hard drive so why do we not have the availability yet???

  • i have found 2 minor bugs with this firmware
1: screensaver mode no longer works
2: the contollers no longer switch off after a set time.
I have tried setting both features again and it still did not work.

UK 60Gb PS3 firmware updated via internet through XMB

  • Hmm. Cool, but sometimes when I try to access the XMB while in a game, the system freezes, and I have to switch off the console. Anyone else have this problem?

  • @ JayTheAVguy
in game Music as been around for a while now and is only available when a PS3 game supports it. Motorstorm PR supports it through XMB. simply start game then press the PS logo on the controller scroll to your music select a track to play and you will then be returned beack to the game, if you find the music is too loud or low in volume press the PS logo again scroll to music then scroll to the top of the menu you will have a new icon there that display the current music track being played, select that you will now be able to increase the volume skip tracks without having to search through your albems.
Some games like Super Stardust HD dont use XMB you have to use the ingame options and select custom sound track.

The real question is why cant we listen to custom music in motorstorm PR during online races?

  • I just updated to 2.60, the PS3 freezes when running the new gallery application, then going to Tools/ and browsing the “surface types”.

    PS3 40GB. FW 2.60

  • Just wanted to say I LOVE the Photo Gallery. After I opened it up I ended up putting all my photos on my PS3. I especially like the cool sorting modes.

  • I merged my PSN iD, and my blog iD, but my avatar from PSN isn’t showing. :-/

  • i’ve posted in this “section” a few times, im still just like…..why cant someone with some authority say something….its all about communication man, not asking to talk one on one with each and everyone of us but i mean come on why not just come back and clear up some stuff let us know whats currently in progress, what to expect SOMETHING!!!!……OK

    useless/pointless/stupid vent over…. im out……..4 now

  • I’m sure in the near future, we will see more features in the next firmware update, hopefull, in game-voice cross over through XMB, and Music in all games… Also i just recently downloaded Megaman 9 off of the PSN store, and it was only 100kb, it was the full game for $9.99 not the demo and for some reason i dont see it in the XMB,i am guessing it is the 2.60 firmware update? but maybe not as i also downlaoded other games that DID install correctly… Please Sony fix this, i think maybe Megaman 9 had just been deleted accidently from the PSN store servers, and if so, then i will download it again soon when it is back up. Thank! This is my 1st comment Btw!

  • Thanks for DIVX 3.11 support but here’s something that needs to be looked at. Using the standard media server (Media Player) takes forever to display a list of videos and just as long to start playing the selected movie. Why is it that an individual can write an app such as “Java PS3 Media Server” (DLNA compliant Upnp Media Server, written in Java, streams or transcodes any kind of media files, blows the socks off anything out there that claims to do the same) but Sony with all the resources behind it can’t? [see http://ps3mediaserver.org/forum/%5D. Oh, and don’t get me going on the PS3 browser – it sucks and should be replaced with Opera…..

  • Would be extremely nice if the photo gallery app could browse the photos over the network as well (DLNA).

  • This updated is boring.. They need to focus on fixing freezing problems and more http://www.youtube.com/signofzodiac.. plus, focus more on the earlier requests like in-game chat/video chat. Not on dumb photos.. And what happen to making all games of 2009 have trophies and custom soundtracks..

  • Nice update, one question though…..Is there any news on fixing the ps buttons menu clock and battery? I must agree it is bothersome when you must wait for the charge symbol to disappear before seeing what time it is. It’s just in the wrong spot. It takes away from gameplay immersion when you just want to check the time quick and must instead wait that few seconds…I know it sounds trivial and it sort of is…but I’m sure a quick fix is nothing right?

  • Photo album is really great!

BUT: Please check PS3 official forum for the update ideas!!!! At least somebody could confirm that you are reading it……

  • I’ve heard Xbox360 fans say “All I want is a game system” Well so do I. But I also want Music to listen to, Videos to enjoy and Picture to remember fun times outside of gaming. The Playstation 3 is truly an entertainment system that will last 10+ years like its older brother PS2. These new features are truly great! Not only is the new photo gallery feature amazing it seems to encourage you to get outside and take more pictures.

Next thing we need is simple art program for creating your own art to share. :)

  • thanks for the update, I wont use the new picture feature but its their if I ever change my mind.

    cheers

  • Hey guys, this is my first ever blog comment BTW…I love the new firmware update…but since everyone else is telling the PS network what they want…i would like to see a better internet browser maybe with more capability and tabbed pages like Firefox or IE and some more page transfer speed would be nice also. Keep up the good work guys.

  • I am the owner of a 40GB PS3 in the UK and would like PS2 backwards compatability. I want to be albe to play Final Fantasy on it, is there any chance of this happening?

  • Big thanks from across the pond, the photo album feature is excellent. Keep up the good work and if you get the chance can you give SCEE a swift boot up the rear (lol)..

  • will this be compatible on pshome?

  • I use a panosonic DMC FZ7 camera for photos and video ,the photos work fine on ps3 but video needs apple quick time could this be added to the ps3 in a future update?.This would save me converting them on my pc ,and would hopefully let me put them strait on my ps3 for viewing

  • Hi again
It seems that some updates are not critical,ie some are justs addons like the photo package. It would be better if users were given the option to update the ps3 by seperating the critical updates from the cosmetic,as they all use hard drive space and clutter my dash board.
No offence ment but i like choice…

  • Ive just bought ferrari challange if you want play ps2 games on ya ps3 try that. Its a ps3 game with ps2 graphics&sound good online though ha ha

  • When I am ingame and I open the xmb and look at my trophies then while still highlighted on the trophy icon I press the ps button and then the whole system locks up at that point freezing before it can return the game….always when I am on the trophy icon though never really does it anywhere else….weird glitch that has been going on since the trophy firmware was released…

  • I have yet to check to check into this further, but I’m interested in finding out if this update has any fixes for the PS2 backward compatibility problems on some games – such as Jak and Daxter slowdown glitch that’s still present with the last update -, allowing other PS2 titles to use the hard drive, or better multimedia playback on more video formats that ARE NOT DIVX based or created.

And what about that custom music player that works with every game and not just a few when you visit the X-Media bar?

  • we want app like these
    .youtube
.bet internet browes with tab/bet layout/
    .avg
    .more avater
    .bet psn sign id
    .wma
    .password to get in
    .google maps
.bet frends list so moreis to used
    .wether app
.bet way lister 2 music e.g rating/coverflow/a.z listed
    .move icon
    .

  • Well, I was excited about this until I realized the Photo Gallery only works with local data on the PS3.

C’mon, how about an application that works with networked data for the 90% of us that already store media on a NAS or server?????

Now I’m back to looking at other options for the living room. :(

  • Owner of a 60 GB PS3 here. Updated to 2.60 via XMB, and now my DivX and XviD files that previously worked, no longer work. Tells me they’re corrupted.

h264 encoded mp4’s still work just fine.

  • Belay that DivX and XviD files no longer working… Somehow my USB hub got disconnected from my laptop, while the files where “ghosting” on my PS3.

Plugging in the USB hub (which had my external hard drives connected to it) fixed the “problem”, and the PS3 now plays the DivX and XviD files, including the DivX 3.11 stuff.

Now to get other video container support, such as h264 in the avi container, mkv and ogm containers, and .a$$, .srt and .sub file support.

  • seems to be a few Divx and Xvid BUGS in this firmware…..???

  • @NathanJ: Take it easy, man. It was just a suggestion, and he was clearly appreciative of what’s new to this FW update. Sheesh…

@Jeff: The new Photo Gallery app. is a blast! I have a 40GB, which requires the use of a USB-powered card reader, but previous FW didn’t recognize it. This one does, and I’ve been having a great time transferring photos from my Mac to the PS3. Especially love the ability to set slideshows to my own music. Terrific update, and a nice surprise…

  • cool update!

some new screensavers (particularly interactive ones) would be a lot of fun.

  • The upgrade did something terrifying; it got to the start screen, and then reported some kind of problem accessing the hard drive…

    Restarting the box worked, though.

I don’t think there’s a problem with the HD; it *is* an upgraded HD, not the original, though. In general, I’ve seen the occasional bit of strangeness from having a that much disk in the PS3 – but hopefully this was just a momentary glitch, and hasn’t been a bigger problem for others.

Scared the crap out of me, though.

  • When are u planning on supporting MKV files. And maybe some sort off liberals for your videos.

  • Nice update there PSBuds :)

    Enjoying it.

  • Wow this update needs to change to fw update 2.55, claiming this update as 2.60 is ridiculous it does nothing really div x is what i liked the best. PS i did not but it for an entertainment hub but for a GAMING CONSOLE please focus on it as a GAMING CONSOLE, and not a media hub. Thanks.

  • COOL UPDATE!! i just wish we could get in-game voice chat! if we get that i will be one happy sailer!

  • I previously mention 2 minor bugs which were the screensave mode and controllers not switching off, I have managed to get them working, had to reboot without a usb keyboard plugged in, everything is fine now.

    two suggestions though.
1: in the new photo album you should be able to assign a different music track to each photo.
2: custom screen savers would be great or being able to use the photos on the HDD or over a Network as a screensaver.
If you do support custom screensavers please make the software easier to use than the custom XMB its terrible.

  • I downloaded and tried the gallery. It’s pretty neat!

  • Damn, still no sign of PAL DVD Video playback on NTSC consoles and vice versa. :(

  • new avantar please

  • this so sweet, i like the ideas coming from you people at sony playstation.

  • To the PS3 Development Team:

    PS3 STORE FEEDBACK

    1) more big game title downloads (I don’t like physical media–let’s see some bigger game titles downloadable)
    2) wishlist for future store downloads (saving titles I may be interested in buying later/tracking)
    3) TITLE of current category being browsed always visible on the store screen
    4) LARGER TEXT SIZE (it’s so tiny, beef up that text size!)
    5) subscription content service
    6) more sorting options (price, name, game type, RATING (see below), etc.)
    7) Game screenshot previews & more game video previews
    8) USER REVIEWS/GAME RATINGS!!! LET US RATE OUR GAMES SO WE CAN SORT/BROWSE/SEARCH BY USER REVIEW/RATING!

    PS3 SYSTEM FEEDBACK

    1) PLEASE allow a PS3 controller to be PERMANENTLY assigned to a device number (e.g. always number 1).
    2) stream my unprotected iTunes content to my PS3.
    3) Provide audible sound when making a click action in the web browser.
    4) easy shortcut to get to the “maximum window size” option.
    5) feedback link somewhere in the PS3 interface that makes it easy to submit feedback to the Playstation development team so we can get our great ideas out!

  • looks great!! but I agree with other in that it is a gaming device first and foremost.. the multimedia features are nice but I would way rather see a PS2 emulator or built in support for PS2.. It seems like a given that you would want to support your own stuff. How would people feel if Microsoft one day stopped supporting their own file.. or Adobe. People would freak out. I was hoping for PS2 capabilities in this firmware update not some iphoto ripoff. c’mon guys get your priorities straight. its a gaming device we want to play our games. PS2 support PPPLLLZZ!

  • Do we have support for RAW images yet or just JPG?

  • Nice improvements for non-gamers but gotta give us a choice of our own in game music

  • Please include PS3-game upscaling!

  • Seriously, the DRM’s are the worse addition to the PS3. All I want to be able to do is backup the media somewhere else… Is it really a crime to want to store movies on a 1tb external harddrive instead of your 80G Ps3?

  • buy a 500gb internal drive and quit whining.
