Resistance 2 Patch 1.40 Details

Bryan Intihar's Avatar + Posted by Bryan Intihar on Jan 23, 2009 // Community Manager, Insomniac Games

If you played Resistance: Fall of Man, you know that Insomniac continually looked for ways to improve the online experience, even several months after the game’s release. We’re taking the same approach with Resistance 2, as patch 1.40 will be available for download on Monday, January 26 (you’ll automatically receive the download prompt the next time you play the game). The patch addresses several areas, including:

Multiplayer Progression

Some people have seen their competitive and/or cooperative characters reset to level 1. For several of those cases, this patch will not only bring back all the XP, stats, and attributes that you’ve lost, but it will also add to your character profile the XP/stats/attributes that you’ve earned since those levels were reset. For example, say you were a level 20 medic and after being reset to level 1, and you earned 5,000 XP. Thanks to the patch, you’ll return a level 20 medic and that 5,000 XP will be added to your profile.

This patch will also correct some medal and trophy issues, including the “Killing Machine” trophy (if you’ve already accumulated 10,000 kills but haven’t received this trophy, it’ll pop up as soon as you download the patch).

Here are some additional patch 1.40 details:

Trophy/Medal/Ribbons

  • “Salute Me” trophy is not awarded until player reaches level 31 (Lieutenant)
  • “Berserker” trophy can be collected during non-ranked games
  • “Survivor” medal can be collected in cooperative games
  • “Sure Shot” ribbon is awarded if player has accuracy of exactly 50%

Clans

  • Added clan support for viewing members, sending invites, and setting up clan tags
  • Default clan region is now USA

Match Balancing

  • Unbalanced ranked games are cancelled in staging before the game is started
  • Parties are prevented from matchmaking into free-for-all Deathmatch games

Competitive

  • Loadouts can be disabled in the “Create Game” screen in competitive games
  • Balanced the chance of dropping large ammo pickups in competitive games
  • Core Control scoreboard displays “Kills”
  • Improved scoreboard formatting

Cooperative

  • Balanced the amount of XP gained by the Medic class in cooperative games
  • Stalker movement enabled in cooperative games
  • Small ammo pickups don’t give LAARK ammo in cooperative games

Weapons/Gameplay

  • Splash damage on Pulse Cannon can damage the player firing it
  • Rossmore reticule better reflects its accuracy
  • Fire is easier to shake off
  • Players cannot swap weapons in the middle of a melee attack

Miscellaneous

  • Localized text updates
  • Network message optimizations
  • EULA displays the correct language text for Norwegian, Finnish, Swedish and Danish

Now you may be asking, “But what about adding the option to save the second player’s character progress?” Truth be told, it required a certain PS3 firmware that wasn’t available at the time of Resistance 2’s release. We now have that firmware and are currently working to implement the feature. As soon as it’s ready, we’ll get it out to you.

If you have any questions regarding the patch, please visit and post in the MyResistance.net message boards. The Insomniacs will be there to help answer them.

I have a few questions :)

First of all: Any plans for another game night where us in the community can play against you guys? I missed the last, I misread it as from 8 GTM… Obviously I failed :(

Secondly: When can we expect an expansion? Or expect some news on one? (Expansion as in more Maps… I for one would like to see more sections from the Campaign redone into Competitive and Cooperative)

Thirdly: Will there ever be a possible Offline/Online Cooperative version of the main campaign? Or would that be technically difficult (I could see why)

That is all, glad to see Resistance 2 is still going strong :D

Every 1st and 3rd Friday of the month we get online to play between 5pm and 6pm Pacific time.

If you\’re in Europe, I think we\’re going to try to do it again sometime soon.

As far as new content for the game – it is in the works, but more details will be announced soon.

And thirdly, I answered this question up above. But it\’s both technically difficult, and difficult/infeasible from a design perspective.

Glad to See that the Stalkers in co-op will move now….Now can you guys do the same thing for the Marauders?? Now what about Co-op DLC? also how about some more co-op ranks over 30….maybe 60 lime in competitive…and when there are all level 30(or higher) ranked players in the game make the enemies more difficult….for instance give them all Mark II Bullseyes or something…maybe add another class as well….and add in some weapons from the Ratchet & Clank Universe……how about those Plasma Beast?? lol Just some suggestions

I wish yall would add Mouse support,That would be awesome,I don’t really like to play FPS with a controller,And mucj prefer the mouse for shooter,Yea I know that some say its not fair and blah blah, but from how I seen some people play in competitive it shouldnt matter, tired of when I start shooting someone and even after a whole clip of ammo being pounded into them and they still don’t die, then they turn around in a split second,1/2 shots and boom I am dead,I dont know if you actually unlock armor or what in Competitive like you do in Co-op but,Its crap

@ James’ response to #12

That’s what I like to hear! I’m sure you guys will get something figured out. I can see spending much more time with the game once this happens (as it would be more fun for the other players to not just always have Lv. 1 stuff)

This patch is promising, I really like the Medic balance; hopefully this will stop games with 6 medics, 1 soldier, and 1 spec-ops.

One small suggestion… How about showing the co-op level progress in your “Profile”? Maybe a progress bar for each class.

I know is a minor thing, but it is weird that all the other sections have it and coop is what I play the most.

Hmm, is the “Master Spy” trophy bug fixed? In the Community -> Profile -> Stats menu it says I only got 19 intels. But in game I got all the intels. All are ready and so on. But it didn’t register.

And I’ve read a couple of other places that other people are experiencing the same thing.

+ ATLRoAcH on January 23rd, 2009 at 10:50 am said:

Exactly how much less XP will we get as medics? I’ve always felt that the XP we get now for what we do is fair. Medics deserve more XP. If anything you should up the XP spec ops get for giving ammo.

Also, will this patch stop the occasional freezes I’ve been experiencing?

Oh, and can you make it to where the loadout screen doesn’t block out both player’s views when in splitscreen.

Last but not least, PLEASE add custom soundtracks. Even if it’s just for the multiplayer. Thanks. :)

Hello, this is my first every comment on this blog. Firstly, I would like to congratulate you on taking innovative steps in order to reinvent the FPS which has become a bit stale in recent years. Resistance 2 with its plethora of online modes, maps, berserks, weapons, etc. makes it a great game. Furthermore, a few of the bloggers have said about trading in Resistance 2 for Killzone 2, but why not just keep Resistance 2 as well as buy Killzone w as they are both great games in their own right.

Secondly, I would like to ask a few questions about forthcoming content, can we expect additional content to the offline or online component, and if so is it for the competitive or co-operative mode? Can we expect more skin options, higher levels for veterans, new beserks, etc.

@3 and the response:

Can you clarify the response to the original question?

I play as a medic myself, and every game I’m around the middle in terms of my position on how much xp I gained in the game relative to everyone else. So my xp gain as a medic is defiantly average.

So the update will nerf the medic’s xp gain, causing me to end up at the bottom of the barrel every game?

I know that there’s the 99,999 xp glitch, so are you talking about disabling that? Or are you actually talking about reducing the rate at which the medic gets xp for those who play normally?

You guys have done an outstanding job with the game.

Your willing to help improve the game on R:FoM by interacting with the community was always much appreciated.

I do have one question though and its probably something that would be difficult to change or even couldn’t be changed.

That being said would Augers ever be able to penetrate other auger shields or wraith shields like they used to?

This would be my one and only problem with the multiplayer. I do miss things about R:FoM but you guys, like I said before, have done an absolutely amazing job with Resistance 2. My favorite game on ps3 to date.

Oh, also I just remembered, I think you should add in something on the scoreboard that pops up when you press select that says what class each person is in co-op. The reason for this is because it’s kind of hard to see all the classes people are in the middle of a battle when everyones so spread out, so it’d be nice if there was a way to see how many of each class you have.

My idea was that the scoreboard could instead be broken into three groups, Medics, Spec Ops, Soldiers, and each person of that class could be grouped under there. This would also allow you to see how well you compare to everyone else of that class and mayb learn a few tips from them.

Thanks again!

Thanks a lot for the patch updating some things. I love playing R2 co-op so much. The only things I hope get adjusted are the competitive matching-making (it was sometimes not balanced, putting the good people on one team it seems, but it has been a while since I played competitive) and it seems like there’s an occassional network problem on Orick (but rarely I have an issue, just happened twice total). Otherwise the game is pretty much great. :D

Right now I just badly want to see a lot of co-op DLC. I’d buy all of it.

Since you have taken others glitches I will share another that can make the Soldier rather broken.

If a soldier has a LAARK, fires, then reloads while standing on ammo he will load all of those ammo boxes straight into the barrel. I have been in a match where I could have 7 shots in the barrel and one in storage. If the weapon is switched out, then the extra ammo goes into storage and there will only be one in the barrel.
