Resistance 2 Patch 1.40 Details

Bryan Intihar's Avatar + Posted by Bryan Intihar on Jan 23, 2009 // Community Manager, Insomniac Games

If you played Resistance: Fall of Man, you know that Insomniac continually looked for ways to improve the online experience, even several months after the game’s release. We’re taking the same approach with Resistance 2, as patch 1.40 will be available for download on Monday, January 26 (you’ll automatically receive the download prompt the next time you play the game). The patch addresses several areas, including:

Multiplayer Progression

Some people have seen their competitive and/or cooperative characters reset to level 1. For several of those cases, this patch will not only bring back all the XP, stats, and attributes that you’ve lost, but it will also add to your character profile the XP/stats/attributes that you’ve earned since those levels were reset. For example, say you were a level 20 medic and after being reset to level 1, and you earned 5,000 XP. Thanks to the patch, you’ll return a level 20 medic and that 5,000 XP will be added to your profile.

This patch will also correct some medal and trophy issues, including the “Killing Machine” trophy (if you’ve already accumulated 10,000 kills but haven’t received this trophy, it’ll pop up as soon as you download the patch).

Here are some additional patch 1.40 details:

Trophy/Medal/Ribbons

  • “Salute Me” trophy is not awarded until player reaches level 31 (Lieutenant)
  • “Berserker” trophy can be collected during non-ranked games
  • “Survivor” medal can be collected in cooperative games
  • “Sure Shot” ribbon is awarded if player has accuracy of exactly 50%

Clans

  • Added clan support for viewing members, sending invites, and setting up clan tags
  • Default clan region is now USA

Match Balancing

  • Unbalanced ranked games are cancelled in staging before the game is started
  • Parties are prevented from matchmaking into free-for-all Deathmatch games

Competitive

  • Loadouts can be disabled in the “Create Game” screen in competitive games
  • Balanced the chance of dropping large ammo pickups in competitive games
  • Core Control scoreboard displays “Kills”
  • Improved scoreboard formatting

Cooperative

  • Balanced the amount of XP gained by the Medic class in cooperative games
  • Stalker movement enabled in cooperative games
  • Small ammo pickups don’t give LAARK ammo in cooperative games

Weapons/Gameplay

  • Splash damage on Pulse Cannon can damage the player firing it
  • Rossmore reticule better reflects its accuracy
  • Fire is easier to shake off
  • Players cannot swap weapons in the middle of a melee attack

Miscellaneous

  • Localized text updates
  • Network message optimizations
  • EULA displays the correct language text for Norwegian, Finnish, Swedish and Danish

Now you may be asking, “But what about adding the option to save the second player’s character progress?” Truth be told, it required a certain PS3 firmware that wasn’t available at the time of Resistance 2’s release. We now have that firmware and are currently working to implement the feature. As soon as it’s ready, we’ll get it out to you.

If you have any questions regarding the patch, please visit and post in the MyResistance.net message boards. The Insomniacs will be there to help answer them.

i fixed the freezing issue but it involved me disbanding my clan and remaking it to do so…

whenever i tried to accept/decline invites or change any clan options my game froze up on me…

whoever it was that was talkin about this in previous posts should try this … or look into it…

Woohoo! When I got R2 on launch day, I didn’t have enough for the collectors edition…I finally talked my friend into buying the game (he doesn’t usually like FPS’s) and he got the collectors edition. He now loves the game, and is going to sell me the CE parts…My only question is, is the disc the same in both? IE if we switch discs will I still have all my save data compatible and what not?

And I hope you support this game as much as you did R:FOM. If so, this game has a loooong life ahead of it.

I really doubt they’ll do that. It’s over 2 years old now. I’m sure they are working on DLC/Future projects now.

Any chance you could split up the pause menu for the 1st and 2nd player in multiplayer?

It’s distracting having to stop playing whenever your partner wants to change weapons.

This is AWESOME news, especially the Co Op medal patch….I have played Sooooooo many co op games without dying and still received the medal :-

One thing I HAVE to mention to the Insomniac dev team is that in the next patch PLEASE fix the missing kills not counted in matchs.Far to many times does the game not count all kills during a match.

Also the Fareye hit detection is glitchy at times. And the competitive search for small games need to fixed……

Example you guys should put up a number search for matches like instead of small the search should be Skirmish/5 vs 5 if I want a larger game search Skirmish/ 10 vs 10 etc…

Lastly I have some request/ideas for any plans on DLC for R2..

Please add more character skins,Co Op maps/missions,Competitive Maps.

And PLEASEEEEEE…..bring back the classic Meltdown and Capture the Flag as a expansion/DLC I would pay anything for that.

I just got back into this game thanks to the Retribution demo for pre-ordering at Best Buy. It’s a tough game and frustrating at times, but the MP is where it’s at so it’s good to see that Insomniac is still patching/updating it.

Got to agree with a couple of guys here, some skins or gears (that does not affect the character) would be really great to buy with gray tech. I got sooo many gray tech wanting to be use… some cool stuff like in the competitive mode would be a great start!

I found that being the medic was easy to level up on. I myself have had matches where I had a 12,000 or so point lead when a match is over. Last week I played 3 matchs and I had so many points after each match, I leveled up. I was level 24 and went level 25 in those three matchs. I found that the easy way during a match was to go with people who didnt protect themselves. I could stand there and get about 2,000 xp points on one guy because he was getting shot up and didn’t get any cover. As a suggestion I would like to see where matchs can be set up for people who have headsets only. I like the communication it helps greatly. It dont help when your out of ammo and you are a sitting duck. I was thinking for the DLC, why not have all the weapons from R:FOM in R2. That would be a ot of fun. I loved the Sapper, Reapers, Dragon, Splitter and Hailstorm. Those weapons were fun.Enough about the bad. This game is great for co-op!

Bryan or James,

It’s great to finally see the first step in a right direction for the game. Unfortunately, I have not seen this issue addressed yet:

If I search for “small” games I would usually assume that to mean… 20 players or less. Not this 60 player bull which is swarming with kill fodder. Why have the options to specify your search when it’s clearly broken?

Please answer this post and at least acknowledge this is being worked on/fixed soon.

You can set it to tapping L2 to sprint in controls. You can also make your own customized control layouts. Just go to controls. And you will find this.

That would be LOD (level of detail) management. When the game has to render two viewpoints it does more work, so game engines are typically set to lower the detail in polygons and texture rendering to maintain the speed of the viewports.

The update took way too long in my book. The content is decent though. I still dont see why the Mark. spawns with a secondary fire (orb) but you dont spawn with a 40. Makes little sense to me seeing how over powered the carbine with a scope on it is. :)

@218

You only get good xp like that if you’re the only medic in the game and you’re supporting the whole team. Once you get 2-4 medics in the same team, your xp drops significantly since now all four medics are healing, and if one medic shoots right after another medic shoots at the same hurt ally, the second medic doesn’t get squat since by that point the hurt ally is already healed.

That’s why I don’t think they should change the medic. If you’re the only medic on the team and you’re keeping the entire team alive, I say the medic deserves the xp for all the hard work.

great update guys but you need to fix the spawn points a number of times at the start of a game a dude will spawn in the same place as me and he runs forward first and i shoot him up thats not fair for him lol and a number of times im shooting a guy from a leadge and a guys spawns behind me and kills me and also get rid of the dam carbine granade launcher its dam anoying when im owning and some guy runs past with a carbine and secondary fires me giving an instant kill or make it harder for them to get secondary ammo for carbine coz it take the fun away when you can see a hole opposing side runing around pawning with carbines clans are always good at doing that

Is there any chance of adding ‘invert x’ to the control scheme as well as the current ‘invert y’? Please?

I started playing ps2 games when the ‘default’ was opposite what it has become lately – and i’m bad enough at playing these type of games without being handicapped by a control scheme I can’t use without thinking.

I really loved R1, but this missing feature has meant I cannot enjoy R2 very much at all. I was very much disappointed to say the least, when I found out after being hyped up about your technical achievements in the game – I’m a coder from Amiga days, and I notice all the niceties like no frame-drops when things get ‘busy’, streaming, etc.

(Text chat in the lobby would be handy too.)

The patch is good but I think you should add a few things, like the option to continue playing with the same random people you just played with (Co-OP and Competitive).

– Being able to start the next mission/level with your party members without going back to the main menu, it takes allot of time to start a new mission that way.

– The party system needs allot of work, some teammates starts to disappear from the list after a few games but we can still hear them and they can’t hear us! And when they join again their voices starts to echo like they joined the party twice, so we need to disband the party and invite everyone again.

– also it would be awesome if we can voice chat with a friend who is playing campaign (not a necessary addition but a cool one).

Anyways this is for me the best co-op game ever and and those little things will make it even better.

Love you Insomniacs your one of the top 10 developers around.

I wish the menus would all wrap and also have a page down feature. Such as, when looking at possible games to join, I have to just keep pushing down and scrolling forever, instead of pressing R2 to go down 10 at a time, or R1 to go back up 10 at a time, just like Warhawk. Also, when you get to the bottom of the list, go back to the top and from the top to the bottom, just like the main screen menu does. The Allies Friends should do that also. Plus, when finding a Competitive game to play, I like to only find Skirmish and Core Small everytime. It would be nice it the menu preferences would be saved until they are changed and have check boxes for what you like. Just click Skirmish and click Core and Small and next time I pick Comp, I will just push PLAY NOW with my saved preferences.
