Resident Evil 5 demo live on PSN today

Hey everyone, I’m Shawn Baxter (Snow) from Capcom-Unity. Our amazing Resident Evil 5 Demo goes live today on PSN, so I thought I’d tease you a bit with some of the cool things to expect, whether you’re an old fan or new to the series. One of the first things I noticed is how good the game looks. It’s hard to get by the beauty RE5 has to offer. Better still, you get to play through two beautiful stages in the demo. Aside from the sweet graphics, there’s plenty more that the demo has to offer.

For those new to the series, the controls can seem a bit different than you may expect. The RE brand has always forced you to take your time, stop while shooting, and conserve your ammo. It really helps add a sense of tension a normal shooter can’t offer. But to help those who are new to the world of RE, we have new control types that ease things up a bit. My favorite is Type A, which is probably best if you’re a fan of the previous games, especially RE4. Next on my list is Type D, which I find myself loving more and more. Type D is best if you’re new to the game, and it offers something the others don’t… Strafing! May seem like a simple thing, but in a game as tense as RE5, it can really help in those situations where you have little time to react.

Alright, so I’m sure you’ll love the graphics and controls, but there’s something even better that the Resident Evil 5 demo has to offer: Co-op. Best part is, you can play co-op online over the PSN, or even split-screen for some couch co-op. Now, of course you can play single player, but nothing beats actually playing through with someone who can plan and strategize with you. For an RE game, the fact that I can play with a buddy adds a whole new level of fun. Nothing like getting into a swarm of Majini, and having your partner shoot a few in the face so you can uppercut or flip-kick one of them!

Once you’ve played through the demo, you may want to try taking on the Executioner (huge axe-guy) with a buddy. The first time you play through the demo, run! He is extremely tough. But once you get comfortable with the game and controls, try and bring him down. I’ve tried, and he is extremely hard, but it is indeed possible to kill him, so don’t give up.

Oh, and a quick tip I’ve found is to aim for the heads on the Majini so they stagger back. Chest shots work, but one shot to the head means only one bullet expended, then push Square to pull off one of the crazy powerful melee attacks. If you get them to fall on the ground, run up to him and stomp ’em with your boot or stab with the knife if you’re playing as Sheva!

February 2nd is just around the corner, so add me to your friends list, and I’ll catch you online for some co-op Majini butt-kickin’! PSN ID: Snow_Infernus

See you online!

  • Oh yeah, I played the demo on my 360, and I honestly didn’t enjoy it at all. Now I’ve never played a Resident Evil game before, so I’m not sure if the controls are supposed to feel so…clunky. I found aiming to be very difficult, and I didn’t like how I couldn’t move and aim/shoot at the same time. I suppose the limiting controls were supposed to help make it scarier(similar to Dead Space, although, even that game’s controls felt more intuitive than this), but all they seem to do is make it more frustrating, for me at least. Not only that, but I thought the RE series stopped being a survival/horror game after RE4. It certainly wasn’t scary or anything.

From what I’ve played so far, I’d say that fans of the series will most likely love it, but for a non-fan like myself, I’d rather play Dead Space, or FEAR 2 if I wanted a scary game, or Left4Dead and Dead Rising if I wanted a zombie-killing action game.

  • From all the comments here, this sounds like one of those times when releasing a Demo is squarely Not in the favor of the company…

  • you all sux! RE has all was been like this, so stop talk all that jazz, if you want to run and gun go play a FPS.

  • You know what Wone? YOU suck!

  • Hit me up to play co-op….DJ_ICEY is my user name.

  • I miss the old days of Resident Evil that we all “grew up with” on the original Playstaton. I know there isn’t a Raccoon City anymore, but I’d love to go back to it and fight the classic Zombies again.

How about a REmake to RE2, Capcom? :)

  • I’m not sure if this has been posted here yet or not, but here is a bunch of comparison screenshots of the PS3 vs 360 version. It’s clear that the 360 version looks SUBSTANCIALLY better than the PS3 version.

I don’t a 360 and don’t plan on buying one, but one of the reasons I bought PS3 was because it was so much more powerful.

I will not be buying this game and supporting Capcom’s pathetic attempt at this game on PS3. Its clear the system can do way better graphics (MGS4, Uncharted), and giving us an inferior port of the 360 version is like being spit in the race. Good riddance.

  • Well, I played the demo again, and this time I finally figured out how to run.=P Oddly enough, that alone made the game a hell of a lot more fun!…okay, that and the shotgun, even if I did end up using up all the ammo at the beginning instead of when I actually needed it.

In any case, I’m actually looking forward to this game now! The aiming still sucks and you can’t shoot ‘n’ run at the same time, but eh, I got over it.

  • Playing the demo, it makes me exited for the release of the game. But still I think Capcom is going to far from the perfect game formula RE4 has. In the comments, I see many people like myself having problems with the new control settings. Why not simply keep the perfect from RE4?

For the co-op, it is strange to me. Player 1 start the game, player 2 is playing for 3 weeks so he has done at least half the game. Player 1 comes to play where player 2 is now in the game. That confuses player 1 of the story and other thing (upgrade, spoils the story).
SO WHY PLAY CO-OP IN THOSE DIFFERENT PERIODS IN THE GAME??? It is just a multiplayer battleground that can work in a online game (there is no story).

  • Cool…but i have been playing this for a week now lol

  • @Shawn

I guess, the better looking games, and RUNNING games like UNCHARTED, and KILLZONE 2, must have 5gb installs, since the loadig times are horrid.. wait..

    THEY HAVE NO LOADING TIMES.

Im sorry, but im not going easy on you guys, im tired of installs, just because you guys are too lazy to optimize the game with blu-ray

  • Oh wow a 5gb install. Who cares? You guys act like you’ve never installed a game that big onto your pc before. 5 gigs is not a problem for me and I don’t mind it.

  • 5 Gb OMG
    !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Shawn Baxter, sorry for all these terrible comments, I for one am looking forward to RE5. It feels like the ones complaining about the controls are the ones who have never played RE4 b4. I would rather keep it closer to a survival horror than a typical 3rd person shooter. I also believe that the ones complaining about the 5gig install should maybe first try developing a game. I would love a Team Mercenaries mode ;) Good luck with launch and c u online, smiles.

  • Como puedo bajar la demo?

  • re5=re4(bettergraphx)/lol

  • I’m an RE noob and am having a tough time with the controls. I will def give it the old college try though. I’d also like to have a crossaire. I’m color blind so sometimes it’s hard to place the red dot. I do love the headshots.

  • what’s up with all the re 5 hate? i personally enjoy it. the control type A is just like re4, so what’s the prob? it’s resident evil, it never was supposed to be a shooter. the only thing i don’t like is that they switch square and x, like in re4 x was to fire. hope they fix it in the final game.

  • sweet i love Resident Evil

  • Was their this much talk about the gigs needed to be installed for mgs4? 5gig installed isn’t anything new. I must say I had a little trouble with the controls but its nothing I cant get use to. So far im good with both type A&C.

  • Actually, playing the RE5 demo doesn’t exactly make me want to play RE5, as much as it makes me want to play RE4Wii(better controls) and Left4Dead(now that I realize how much fun killing zombies is)…so, now I’ll be spending twice as much money. Great.

  • @468 hunter- I knew somethign was off… I couldn’t figure out why the RE:4 control scheme didn’t feel right- it’s the swap of X and square… They need to put that back pronto.

  • RE:4 control scheme did seem off

  • as for the 5gb file i dont care i installed a 250gb hard drive into my ps3 it was sooo easy just look it up on youtube. i have a lot of movies over 20 demos and 15 psn games i love it its great

  • hey shawn,
whats up i wan wondering are we going to see some ps,ps2 resident evil titles on the psn? i would really like to see this as it was much fun. also any news on dlc for gta4? thanks hope to hear from u..

  • WTF????

    Mandatory install of 5gbs?

They could of done what uncharted or Killzone did for load times but no.

Sry but they just lost a loyal customer.

God Dammit this pisses me off. Screw you capcom!!!! Looks like my $60 is going to some other game

  • are you people serious ur all coomplaning about 5gb who cares get a bigger hard drive!!! mgs4 has 5gb too no one complains i got a 250gb hdd for just $60 off ebay and its super easy to install all u need is a screwdriver!!

  • If this game was a PS3 Exclusive it would have been better graphicly, gameplay etc… etc…

    Killzone2, Uncharted2, etc..

Good Job Capcom on taking the bribe from Microsoft.

  • remember ur playing off a hdd and its only a demo in the begining it says there maybe glitches and whatnot so this is no the final version of the game just wait and see it’ll be great

  • Cant believe people are complaining, Well Capcom all I know is that you got my $60 along with killzone 2 and maybe fear 2.I love the demo. Btw have people forgotten that this was the e3 demo I am sure a lot of the bugs will be fix.

  • blazerival:
i know these people are crazy they go my 60 for kz2 re5 and fear2 also..and if the hdd is a problem they should upgrade like i did i gotta 250gb hdd im my S*&t

  • The controls suck (expect for control configure D) and whats up with the 5GB install? and dont say it has to don’t with disk space or graphics, just look at Killzone2, will that game be needing a 5GB install?

  • Yay. PS3 owners get stuck with a crap port job again.

Don’t worry guys, it’s just beta(demo)!1!one – All of our complaints will be fixed with a later patch, right? No, wait.. we aren’t team green. We’re token console system. [DELETED]

  • Also if you were to upgrade to a bigger HDD u void the warranty on your PS3 so dont make it seem like its not a big deal

  • wrong!!! this does not in anyway void the warranty i researched and called sony themselves they said they encourage hdd upgrades to further enjoy the ps3..and it was so easy sooo… I GUESS ITS REALLY NOT A BIG DEAL!!

  • Actually ive never been much of a resident evil fan until now. in fact im barly playing re4 for the 1st time on ps3 right now. loved the demo tho. i understand the whole deal about installs but unless its a difference of like 5-7 min w/out and less than a minute w/install it shudnt be madatory, but watever. il just watch degeration on my zune while i wait(:

  • nice demo, the gameplay sp /co-op / gfx / control are great i cant wait to play this full version

  • BLAZERIVAL: Was their this much talk about the gigs needed to be installed for mgs4? 5gig installed isn’t anything new. I must say I had a little trouble with the controls but its nothing I cant get use to. So far I’m good with both type A&C.

Yeah I agree with you on the the mgs4 subject. Mgs4 has a big install at the beginning lasting about 10 minutes. Then minor installs after each act which are about 1-3 minutes long. The game ran flawlessly minus the act changes. Didn’t hear people complain about that much.

  • Changing hard drive doesn’t void warranty.

  • thanx wildman

  • Just played and all I can say it ouch! Great graphics, sound and cut scenes but too bad the game controls like pong. How sad, I was really looking forward to this game.

  • Looks like Capcom have lost a boatload of sales…

I love how people try and excuse the games piss poor controls by saying “thats how RE4 was noobs”… have any of you heard of evolution? games are supposed to get better, not just stay the same with better graphics

  • Already downloaded just have not played yet. I have also heard that the game plays better on ps3 than 360. 360 fanboys said it too.

  • lmao This blog and it’s posts have invaded other gaming sites. x]

  • already ordered it, game looks amazing…i’m hooking up 2 ps3’s to play this with a buddy over the weekend…cant wait!

  • i never thought people would be such hypocrits about games… you can snatch atleast a 120 gig drive off of newegg.com for 45 bucks…

i fail to see how this is such a problem NOW when they used to be way more money back when ps3 first came out..

and no one EVER really complained so much about say… MGS4 (4gb install)… Alone in the dark(3.8 gb install)…gta4 (3.8gb install).. haze(4.2 gb install)…socom(2.7 gb)…

and even obilivion which was what 4..

  • Why you guys complaining about 5gb space i got 80gb and still have room for 12 ps3 games and psn/psone

  • Problem #1 — The Knife Mode
When you select the knife by holding down one of the trigger you are dropped into the Knife Camera mode which is the same angle as the Gun Camera. The Gun Camera works because Chris’s head and shoulder frame a box into which he’ll shoot with his gun. The knife however has a different range but is viewed through the same framed box. Chris will thrust the knife out, off of the screen and then draw it back to his right, back into frame. His knife attack has a misleading range and it is actually an arc of maybe 180 but because the camera angle is behind chris’s right shoulder literally half his attack is thrust out blindly.

The camera also cuts off the players peripheral vision. In close situations where your overwhelmed the knife would be the better weapon to use but you loose so much of your vision it’s not worth going into and leaving the the better camera angle only to slash 3-4 times till your mugged from the left.

Your forced to cut at what you can’t see. If I could I’d leave the camera in it’s zoomed out position while using the knife. It won’t Show you everything that is happening but you will see more than in knife mode.

  • Problem two – You can strafe turn but you can’t run and strafe.
It’s obvious to me that the game was prototyped on the Type A/B controls. They have the added feature of using the right stick to ‘glance’ which is wholely unique feature to this control type. However the other control types suffer because of this. The C and D control schemes are more typical of what Halo or Gears would use. They allow for the use of strafing with the right stick controlling the angle of the camera. However as soon as the player uses the the run button(“X” or “B”) the controls revert to Type A/B. The universal use of the “X”or”B” button for running forces you to direct Chris wholely with he left stick. So using Type C or D will only mean that you will have to work with two control types which will change on the fly.

The fix? This could be fixed if the run button was not a face button but a trigger. Player could then use strafing while running. By adding an extra control type RE could keeps it’s RE-ness and allow amrican player to run and strafe at the same time.

  • Problem three – Chris is in the corner
Chris is generally too far to the left in the frame. I’d ask for a slider in your options to gradually move Chris closer to the middle, so players can see what’s happening to the left of him. I understand that he’s not centered in the screen because of the ‘rule of thirds’ but giving players the option to move him closer to the middle might make players more comfortable.
