Resident Evil 5 demo live on PSN today

Hey everyone, I’m Shawn Baxter (Snow) from Capcom-Unity. Our amazing Resident Evil 5 Demo goes live today on PSN, so I thought I’d tease you a bit with some of the cool things to expect, whether you’re an old fan or new to the series. One of the first things I noticed is how good the game looks. It’s hard to get by the beauty RE5 has to offer. Better still, you get to play through two beautiful stages in the demo. Aside from the sweet graphics, there’s plenty more that the demo has to offer.

shot0080-00000

For those new to the series, the controls can seem a bit different than you may expect. The RE brand has always forced you to take your time, stop while shooting, and conserve your ammo. It really helps add a sense of tension a normal shooter can’t offer. But to help those who are new to the world of RE, we have new control types that ease things up a bit. My favorite is Type A, which is probably best if you’re a fan of the previous games, especially RE4. Next on my list is Type D, which I find myself loving more and more. Type D is best if you’re new to the game, and it offers something the others don’t… Strafing! May seem like a simple thing, but in a game as tense as RE5, it can really help in those situations where you have little time to react.

Alright, so I’m sure you’ll love the graphics and controls, but there’s something even better that the Resident Evil 5 demo has to offer: Co-op. Best part is, you can play co-op online over the PSN, or even split-screen for some couch co-op. Now, of course you can play single player, but nothing beats actually playing through with someone who can plan and strategize with you. For an RE game, the fact that I can play with a buddy adds a whole new level of fun. Nothing like getting into a swarm of Majini, and having your partner shoot a few in the face so you can uppercut or flip-kick one of them!

Once you’ve played through the demo, you may want to try taking on the Executioner (huge axe-guy) with a buddy. The first time you play through the demo, run! He is extremely tough. But once you get comfortable with the game and controls, try and bring him down. I’ve tried, and he is extremely hard, but it is indeed possible to kill him, so don’t give up.

Oh, and a quick tip I’ve found is to aim for the heads on the Majini so they stagger back. Chest shots work, but one shot to the head means only one bullet expended, then push Square to pull off one of the crazy powerful melee attacks. If you get them to fall on the ground, run up to him and stomp ’em with your boot or stab with the knife if you’re playing as Sheva!

February 2nd is just around the corner, so add me to your friends list, and I’ll catch you online for some co-op Majini butt-kickin’! PSN ID: Snow_Infernus

See you online!

  • @KiloGraham,

I pretty much agree with you, I noticed those same issues–especially when wielding the knife w/ Chris after trying to switch from gunning–I mean, I enjoy the demo, but my most maddening experiences was in fight the damn camera and lack of peripheral vision.

I mean from the (multiple, lol) times I’ve died it’s usually b/c I see who the hell is coming up from my side or my back and that pretty frustrating especially when you think you got most of your enemies in your view then somebody rolling up behind you and grabbing you. I have to say, the graphics in cutscenes could be a bit better too. I’m not saying that graphics gotta be about everything in a game but for somthing that’s been in the making for over 3 or 4 yrs I’d of expected those scenes to look better–especially on the PS3. Hopefully, I’m gonna just chalk this up as it being b/c it’s a demo. I may still get this game (if I can get the hang of the controllers–being a 1st time RE player and all, lol).

  • game looks good and playes alright. but not realy my thing never been a fan of the series.

  • Man does this game suck I love RE but get with the times the controls suck so much :(

  • I’m gonna test this cause you guys had me blocked for ever for no reason thats a way to treat someone thats bought a PS3. Anyways, if this POST for god sake. I played the demo on 360 before PS3 and you guys can lie to cover your butts but the 360 versio once again looks better. Why did you Sony PS3 makers lie to us about how much power this thing has. Nascar 09 is another game thats WAY better than PS3’s version. I mean frame rate drops out the butt on PS3 with games. Plus why do you guys always say the PS3 is so powerful but the 360 can play a game without HUGE Install downloads before playing the games. If this BLUERAY is so FUTURE and MORE ROOM why the heck do we need installs and the 360’s DVD format doesn’t? Man I’m no Rocket Scientist but that looks to me your Lieing to us about this so called POWER! It seems UNDERPOWERED to me cause I have a 360 now and had a Ps3 for years and games play better and look WAY better on 360 99% of the time what is up with that SONY! Stop lieing to me and every other Sony fan that buys your system!

  • Now other than my rant comment to Sony about the PS3 in my last comment lol. I love this game it looks great other than some texture issues and stuff at times, but it looks awsome and I enjoyed playing it online with god knows who lol. I just wish you guys would either patch it in now or later where we can move while shooting then this game would be ranked the best of all time. But making us stay in one spot to shoot just makes me want to throw up at a failure this will be in sells cause everyone is getting the message what the controls are in the demos. You have enough time to fix this or patch it in when you release it. Heck even make it where its like a unlockable we get for finishing the game on any level that we can unlock Walk and gun at the same time! Sounds like a Idea of a award that we PS3 people get that 360 DOESN’T. Then we will be happy lol

  • Why I always end up dying in the demo… This game makes me fear to reload weapons at the wrong time.

  • blue ray installs to run the game smoother… dummy. not because it “has to install” Killzone 2 by far is now going to use the most out of the ps3 and devs said it wont need any install. so much for the theory that blue-ray needs to install. Again as i posted before cross-over games are made better on the 360, because thats the system of choice (being that there are way more out there than ps3’s.) This causes the ps3 to be vastly overlooked and games are not greatly made for it (i.e lost planet, nascar, madden, skate….etc.) Although this is a huge problem , playstation exlusives show you the true power of the ps3.

  • I have both, PS3 and XBox and the Xbox has the better graphics but I will buy it for PS3, altough! :] I only hope Capcom knows that lots of PS3-user are angry because bias for Xbox!!! Thanks for reading!

  • Graphics are beautiful.

And the online coop is fun.

But is it just me or are the controls really slow and unwieldy?

  • To Extravegant,

Why install to run better if they have said since day one its more powerful than 360? But 360 uses STANDARD FORMAT DVDS lol. What was the use of Blueray then if we have to wait longer to play a game that doesn’t look any better OR RUN BETTER on PS3 than a Standard Non Install 360 DVD GAME? lol. You say crossplatform I mean come on how much longer is that going to be said is the problem? Till the PS4 hits I mean COME ON man its been out like 2 years now and 360 WAY longer than that. I know they are giving us the ports that are crap the question WHY so dang long. PS4 will be out by the time Delaystation3 gets in gear over this issue. Plus since we all know we are getting half finished games its pretty sad they charge us 60 bucks for a half finished port and say Patchs months later I mean how SAD and how mad that makes me. Bioshock man that game was all messed up at first and that 10 dollar download addon was a rip off lie. You can’t do anything with it and money wasted. They hype everything more than it is. I should figure its there trend! At least we have Home right now and its Free lol

  • Oh and I forgot Extravegant back at you I have your “DUMMY” right here pal!

  • Those who are Complaining about the Controls, Go to Optios and change the Control Type from D to A, A is Similar to RE4 Control which is best for me.

Those who are Complaining about the 5GB Install, First it is not a download, it is Install which takes 20-25 Minutes, Second even If your PS3 is 20GB there will be alot of Space… Third the 5GB is not Permanant which you can Delete after you beat the Game, Last the 720p will be the same as the Xbox360 1080p because XBox does Upscales the Graphics but the PS3 gives Native Content.

  • It looks like the ps3 facade is melting away. I guess we are looking at how install bases affect game development. Kind of reminds me of the Dreamcast in the beginning of the 21st century.

  • this game sucks

  • A blu-ray’s space has nothing to do with how a game runs. All that space is just used for content i.e. blu-ray discs are a storage medium.

Games DON’T need installs. Developers need to work harder and figure out utilize the PS3’s power. Guerrilla did it, but they did have some assistance from Sony. I guess that’s a benefit of being apart of the Sony family.

Capcom literally takes the easy way out. All of their disc based games require installs.
The most surprising is SFIV. -.-‘
Uncharted 2 looks amazing and that game isn’t going to have an install.

The team behind Tekken 6 knows how to use the PS3’s power. I don’t think the SC guys do though. >.>

I really wish Sony would help 3rd party developers. If it’s difficult to developer for the PS3 then maybe just maybe Sony should send their “ninjas” out. I wonder what 3rd party developers could do with K2’s engine.

  • I think some people fail to realize that you can only redownload your game purchases from the PS Store a set number of times. So having a smaller HDD may force some to delete some of the games they’ve bought from the PS Store. That to me sucks monkey testicles. The reality is that everyone is going to have to replace their HDD. I am definitely one of them. I think I am going to go with a 500GB.

  • the demo pwns.
the real game will pwn more.
resident evil is more about the story, and from what i’ve seen, this looks like this’ll be the end.
also, it clearly says at the beginning of the demo that it’s old and has bugs, and will be fixed.
so f*** off and suck my left one errbody, cuz this game’s gonna pwn as much as i do.
    ROFL SOI SOI SOI SOI!

RE4 demo sucked too, but that was only 10 mins of a 6-7 hour game.
i assume this game will be longer, and the demo is still only a 10-20 min chunk of that.
just suck it up and wait.
When you pick up the real game, you’ll be sucked in by the first video and will stop caring.
    pansies.
    get a life.
    unlike me.
    RE IS my life. XD
    and MGS4 pwn’d too.
but this’ll be just as epic.
at least in this game your partner HELPS you instead of being a stupid 817(|-| that got caught all the time.

if you understand the story, the game is amazing.
the virus has evolved, and so have the zombies.
thus, the gameplay has to evolve to keep up with the zombies getting better.
    kthnxbye :)

  • All of these people who are complaining about the controls must have never played Resident Evil 4 before. It’s pretty much the same. The only problem with this game is the expectations of those who have never played it before. Helf of the people want it to be a run and gun shooter, and the others want it to be a true survival/horror game. While it’s certainly stuck somewhere in between, I’d say it’s still a good game and something to hold me over until Uncharted 2.

  • Oh, and for those complaining about the PS3 in general, why don’t you just get an Xbox? It’s pointless to keep complaining about the PS3. It is what it is. EVERYONE KNOWS that the 360 has better graphics and better online at this point. EVERYONE KNOWS that the 360 is easier to develop for and it will always have the better games. It’s not going to change, so deal with it or get a 360.

For me, the Blu Ray player and exclusives make the PS3 worth the hit on graphics and gaming features. For the most part, the differences are so small that it doesn’t really matter anyway. Also, some of the PS3 exclusives look as good as anything out there.

If you don’t like the PS3, that is fine. But, seriously, why keep complaining about it? It’s like saying “fire hurts”, but you keep sticking your hand in the fireplace anyway. Eventually, people are just going to write you off as an idiot.

  • Please Please capcom give us real RE:4 controls. Swap the X and Square back! I am reloading everytime a zombie pops on the screen instead of blasting him… Square for “fire” is the worst button to choose on the entire controller- I don’t think any game has ever done this before…

  • Well, if anyone still have problems with dark tinted screen like behind XMB on ONLINE COOP play with friends, like I mention @359, it’s because of a bug with large PSN friend list.

All you need to do is either remove some friends to around 50(or you can remove 1by1 to test the limit) or use another PSN with less friends. The connection problems and crashes is gone too.

I hope this bug is fix in the full game though.

Tip for beating BIG AXE dude, grenades or shoot them in the head to stun them, then run close to trigger knockdown melee with square button.

Same for CHAINSAW dude, but you can also stun him by shooting the electricity generator thingie near where a green life tree is.

  • One word: HELLA!

  • Correct me if I’m wrong but this wasn’t the first time that a lot of people where turned off by a demo. For example Uncharted‘s demo wasn’t that good to a lot of people, but the game was beautifully made which is one of my top ps3 games. I’m thinking that this might be the case for people that don’t like the re5 demo.

  • Im having issues with the online Co Op…with my PSN Xmb friends it just doesnt connect to them, and if it does..when i host the game the screen is DAARRKKKK…….that its hard to see playing.

Capcom fix this, because now Im thinking twice about canceling my pre-order.

  • Shawn hasn’t posted in a bit…..wonder why?

    :D

  • Hey Shawn (or whomever at Capcom),

Is there going to be 1080i support in the released game. Although this is the best looking 480p game I’ve seen yet on the PS3, 1080i support would be idea.

  • @ 510
i used dummy instead of using a more demeaning word….
cross – overs are made better for the 360 (no joke). Have you had your economics class yet??? if i were a gaming company i would want to sell my product to the larger fan base. y??, because i can make my profit faster and then i can just make the game for the other console(s) and use that money to cover costs and management. give it a year and you’ll start to see a difference in how companies make cross over games for the ps3.

again blue ray requires no install as previous comments noted third partys don’t want to take the time to recognize a way to keep all the data on the disc, instead they want to transfer the “loose” data onto the HDD.killzone 2 is a HUGE game. I dont mean by sales but by its actual size and there won’t be a single install. I’m expecting other ps3 exlusives to work the same way (no install).

  • I liked the demo, but… if you are not going to let us walk while reloading and shooting, then sorry, but I won’t buy this game.

It’s gonna be too damn hard to avoid zombies if you are stuck in a place reloading your weapon. If it were Resident Evil 2 camera style then Ok, this in this case, moving while shooting/reloading is essential!

I really hope that Capcom listen to gamers and change that!

  • can we use voice chat in co-op in this demo??

  • Good demo by BTW… hurry up march

  • capcom is 3rd party so im sure they designed the game to be balanced with that cracker jack box xbox360 but im sure sony will share the newer devkits with other partners over time… they said the technology they used in kz2 was constantly developing so we just gotta wait and see…

stop cryin about the stupid controls and frame rate bs thier fine i tested the demo on 2 different systems and it worked great…

  • Please ignore the non-RE players here that are taking a break from their FPSes to post.
If you add reloading or shooting while moving you might as well just give up on RE altogether and change the name to “another generic FPS #300231”.

  • ummm, CAPCOM MAN please answer this : why is the PS3 demo in 720p when the 360 demo is in 1080p ?? Is the final game going to be like this?? I’m currently playing Dead Space and that game is 1080p on PS3, so I’m HOPING this 720P [DELETED] is just for the demo on PS3….

  • Hi, again Shawn. Well I sent to you a message with my PS3 and now I’m going to post it here. Like I said the controls in the game are awful and for this I don’t like RE5. I play RE4 in gamecube and I like it in that time but, when i play the RE5 demo i compared it and it look like RE4 with better graphics. So if Capcom fix the controls I buy the RE5 game if not, NO thanks. Sincerely, PSN ID: Paputi P.S. Thanks!!! For the demo.

  • By the way, we are in a new era of games so if Capcom do more games like this please do it good. Because Resident Evil 5 disappoint me. It’s not what I waiting for the game. I was waiting something new.

    PSN ID: Paputi

  • Just wondering, were you guys high when you made the controls? Everything besides that was good.

  • I just tried the RE5 demo today on the PS3 and I must say what a piece of crap. No loading or shooting while running? Co-op split screen doesn’t even use entire screen? I had high hopes for this game and being a RE fan since day one, I must say this is defiantly a non purchase for me. Crapcom you really dropped the ball on this one.

  • This is awsome!!

  • I can hardly play this game, because i just feels so awkward.

  • I have to say that this was MUCH more difficult than RE4 could ever HOPE to be. Great addition, but i agree that the original RE4 controls should be added. That is, the control scheme based on the GameCube version. However, THIS GAME GAVE MY PS3 the YLoD. THE IRONY IS UNBELIEVABLE. I preordered the Collector’s Edition, and then my PS3 dies on the first day of the demo… First it kept resetting while I was trying to play the online co-op,and then after trying agan a few times, my PS3 died. Can someone please tell me WTF happened? No dust on my system, 40gb CECHH01 model, bought it back in the first week of March ’08. NEED HELP PLEASE.

  • I haven’t played the demo yet, nor have I played the other RE games, but I have to speak up in favor of using the hard drive. The mandatory hard drive is one of the PS3’s more significant advantages over the 360, and it would be a pity not to use it. I just upgraded my PS3 to a 7200rpm 320gig hard drive, in fact, so I’m looking forward to the load time improvements from that.

That said, requiring an up-front 5 gig install does seem a little on the cheap side. It would be better to let the game stream additional content to/from the drive during normal game play, so as to prep things for the next level to be loaded. It shouldn’t be necessary to take a full 5 gigs on the disk at a time, nor should the user be required to wait for the install before playing.

  • This is awsome! it toke me about ten minuets to get used to the cantrols but other than that a flawless demo! hope the game this awsome! Thank u capcom for not cheaping these 4 years!

  • Please join me in boycotting this graphically inferior port. If we keep buying these half a**ed ports, developers will keep churning them out.

  • I just tried out the demo. The graphics look really great to me. The gameplay seems fun as well, though I’d really like to be able to shake the SIXAXIS to get the zombies off of me rather than jiggling the left stick.

    No complaints on the ‘port’.

  • it’s like they tried to make an action game but don’t really know how to do it.

    worst game ever!

  • The controls are really stiff for this game. Not being able to run and gun (even with very limited ammo) or even move while aiming is a big minus in my book. I’m disappointed that they still really haven’t gotten the concept of moving and shooting. I can do it in real life, so why can’t two professionals whose job is to do exactly that?

I understand the accuracy, but at the same time, this is the type of game that should be customizable for the user like Fallout 3. I think that’s the exact reason it took me so long to play RE4. The genre (& really Capcom, to be honest) is not really moving forward like it should.

I’m so disappointed with this. It breaks my heart.

  • The only thing i don’t like about re5, is how can a knife be able to break a door down to nothing, i understand if it makes holes in the door, but breaking the entire door down to small pieces???? the game play is fun and the co op is great, but what they should do now is make the destroyable objects act like real objects in real life. Add some physics into the game it will make it more enjoyable. Also i miss seeing the dead zombies on the ground bleeding and twitching, i don’t really like how the zombies disappear and all that’s left is the gold or random ammo drops out of zombies? If you really want to move re5 into the next gen try to add more realistic interactive objects: doors, boxes, fruits, more intelligent zombies/ bosses. But i do like the idea of co op online/offline i give that idea an A+, But hope you give theses some thought, I’m still planning to buy this game when it comes out because I’m a fan of the re series

  • re5 is soooooooo cool

  • I just downloaded the demo, I’m now going to give it a whirl as soon as tommorrow morning.
