Resident Evil 5 demo live on PSN today

Hey everyone, I’m Shawn Baxter (Snow) from Capcom-Unity. Our amazing Resident Evil 5 Demo goes live today on PSN, so I thought I’d tease you a bit with some of the cool things to expect, whether you’re an old fan or new to the series. One of the first things I noticed is how good the game looks. It’s hard to get by the beauty RE5 has to offer. Better still, you get to play through two beautiful stages in the demo. Aside from the sweet graphics, there’s plenty more that the demo has to offer.

shot0080-00000

For those new to the series, the controls can seem a bit different than you may expect. The RE brand has always forced you to take your time, stop while shooting, and conserve your ammo. It really helps add a sense of tension a normal shooter can’t offer. But to help those who are new to the world of RE, we have new control types that ease things up a bit. My favorite is Type A, which is probably best if you’re a fan of the previous games, especially RE4. Next on my list is Type D, which I find myself loving more and more. Type D is best if you’re new to the game, and it offers something the others don’t… Strafing! May seem like a simple thing, but in a game as tense as RE5, it can really help in those situations where you have little time to react.

Alright, so I’m sure you’ll love the graphics and controls, but there’s something even better that the Resident Evil 5 demo has to offer: Co-op. Best part is, you can play co-op online over the PSN, or even split-screen for some couch co-op. Now, of course you can play single player, but nothing beats actually playing through with someone who can plan and strategize with you. For an RE game, the fact that I can play with a buddy adds a whole new level of fun. Nothing like getting into a swarm of Majini, and having your partner shoot a few in the face so you can uppercut or flip-kick one of them!

Once you’ve played through the demo, you may want to try taking on the Executioner (huge axe-guy) with a buddy. The first time you play through the demo, run! He is extremely tough. But once you get comfortable with the game and controls, try and bring him down. I’ve tried, and he is extremely hard, but it is indeed possible to kill him, so don’t give up.

Oh, and a quick tip I’ve found is to aim for the heads on the Majini so they stagger back. Chest shots work, but one shot to the head means only one bullet expended, then push Square to pull off one of the crazy powerful melee attacks. If you get them to fall on the ground, run up to him and stomp ’em with your boot or stab with the knife if you’re playing as Sheva!

February 2nd is just around the corner, so add me to your friends list, and I’ll catch you online for some co-op Majini butt-kickin’! PSN ID: Snow_Infernus

See you online!

  • The PS3 version will work for those that want it really bad/only own a PS3. But the fact remains: The 360 version is going to be better, just like Lost Planet (who really plays Lost Planet, though?) was. It’s like the MT Framework engine can’t seem to nail down the 99.9% same target. A shame, really.

I was thinking of getting the PS3 version since I own all the RE’s on the PS. Just like I own all the RE’s on the Gamecube. To have RE5 be the sore thumb for 360 is sad-face. :(

Also, why the hell is the PS3 verison funky in terms of stick acceleration? It seems like the 360 version is as slow in turning with the RE4/Gamecube version, but the PS3 is like a chipmunk on crack. :/ Odd, but I guess if you get used to it it wouldn’t be a problem. Still, mandatory patch to give the option to adjust the acceleration please, Capcom.

  • “Which explains why Devil may cry 4 has better loading times on the XBOX 360 than on the PS3, and let me not even talk about Lost planet.”

    Except that . . . um . . . it doesn’t.

  • I don’t like the way the control works in this game very much.

  • So tempted to download the demo but I rather wait until I have the whole game in my hands to enjoy all its glory all at once :P

  • My god, I haven’t seen a meltdown like this in a long, long time. No wonder the regular Capcom guy isn’t here today.

Capcom, if you’re still reading this under a nomex blanket somewhere, please spend the next few days polishing the game engine and giving us more control options. I really hope it hasn’t gone gold already. Don’t even bother with trophies, we know you guys don’t understand the magical fairies that make them possible, and that’s okay.

Oh and thanks for the demo. It takes me back to the olden times when games were hard to control and that was the whole challenge. :)

  • the graphic look great
but i have problem with the camera
    and the control

  • “Don’t even bother with trophies, we know you guys don’t understand the magical fairies that make them possible, and that’s okay.”

Um . . . Flock has trophies. And if RE5 is hard for you to control, then maybe you should take some remedial gamer classes or something.

  • i realli didint like how yu cant run up to the zombies and juss knife them

  • but overall i think the game looks pretty good

  • >> Oh and thanks for the demo. It takes me back to the olden times when games were hard to control and that was the whole challenge. :)

RE5 is hard to control? Esp. after Type-D “casualed” my favorite series? Oh man, that’s a laugh riot.

The main problem is that the stick acceleration is too sensitive. If they slowed down the speed it wouldn’t be as bad and it’d be a good (NOT GREAT like the 360 version) port of the game. As it is the fighting with the stick acceleration is the main problem (minus the hmming and hawwing about the graphics).

  • oooh co-op sounds like fun…

  • Gotta say the demo was pretty fun im not jokjng the controls were good , one because running and shooting on re5 is kinda taking the fun out of the game

  • Why Why no run and gun???

  • “Um . . . Flock has trophies.”

Yeah, one game out of 10 that they’ve released, let’s party!

Seriously, Capcom is really, really weird this generation.

  • Played the demo and the controls still sucks for this game. It doesn’t feel any better then RE4’s control. The game just looks nicer. That’s it!
The crazy thing is that this game will score a 9+ on every review site. That’s just sad. Because all Capcom did was add the next gen shine to the oldsmobile. Controlling the characters is like driving a weird tank.

  • Okay, I’m having a weird issue with online co-op… it won’t let me join an invited game, but I can host them and people can join… but after I send my invite, the screen gets really dark, like it’s still stuck in in-game XMB mode without the icons. A lot of people are having the same problem. I woud like to know if Capcom is aware of this issue and are going to fix this before the full version release.

  • CO-OP RE5 TANKS! AWESOME.

  • Quoted from earlier…

“Shawn Baxter replied on February 2, 2009 at 6:46 pm

Well, the PS3 has a 2x Blu-Ray drive, while the 360 has a 15x DVD drive. Spinning faster means it can access that info faster. To keep load times from being too long, there’s a mandatory install on the PS3.
I wish there was more to explain with it, but like I said before, it just comes down to decreasing the load time.”

This isn’t always true. The 2x Blu-ray drive is as fast or faster than the 12x DVD drive on the 360 when it comes to a dual-layered DVD. When it is a single layer DVD, the 12x DVD drive is always faster.

This is due to the 2x Blu-ray drive being CLV (constant linear velocity) where it reads data at the same rate no matter where it is located on the disc. The 12x DVD drive is CAV (constant angular velocity) where it reads data at different rates depending on where it is located on the disc. Those rates are much slower when using a dual layered DVD.

So basically. This is obviously a Capcom thing. They are the only company that has repeatedly done this, and it’s [DELETED]. Please stop trying to defend them for “loading times”.

  • “Yeah, one game out of 10 that they’ve released, let’s party!”

Yeah, you’re right. We’ll just forget all the great things that Capcom has done for the PlayStation community this gen and just focus on the trophy thing.

    Are you high?

  • i need a new HDD

  • So………………………… a 5 gig install, it looks like a ps2 game and the visuals don’t match the xbox360? you guys better give ps3 owners some free dlc or a duking free voucher to download street fighter or something!

  • liquid it looks the same on both versions.

  • Oh great, thanks for giving it sooner than expected…dlng now…

  • Holy hell there’s a lot of comments!!

  • syphon believe what you want kid, but the fact is that the 360 version looks better the colors are better, less pixelation and the characters look much smoother. the only thing the ps3 version has is the ps2 graphics

  • @LiquidhAWK

You need to tell me what kind of magical ps2 games or software you running. Yes, the PS3 version looks worse than the 360 version, but to say it looks like a PS2 game is pure hyperbole.

You wouldn’t want to touch SFHD until it pass Euro certification anyway.

I’d suggest preying over not getting shafted on content instead. Fallout 3, GTA4, Tomb Raider Underworld and Lost Planet come to mind.

  • meh it doesn’t matter anyway I’m going to be playing killzone2 and street fighter4 so re5 can E.A.D. i’ll just get the pc version

  • If there is a difference between the xbox and ps3 version its so slight that it dont matter…….ive seen them both now and they look almost identical but hey if your a xbot all i got 2 say is ……..killzone, Killzone, KILLZONE!!!

P.S. Stop being mad your system you love so much cant push graphics like that.

    P.S.S. blueray, Blueray, BLUERAY!!!

    P.S.S.S. HA HA!!!

  • if you’re ps3 owner that’s going to buy re5 for ps3 you iz an………………

p.s trophy cards take to long to load up
    p.s.s slow ass ps3 system
p.s.s.s ps3 needs a party chat of some type

  • i knew there were some xbots (Liquid) lurking……..you xbots are really upset about Killzone huh…….sorry your broke down systems a mess……..i would buy a wii anyday before a flexbox pleasefixme.

  • Side by side you can see that the 360 version looks better, but since I won’t be looking at the 360 version consistently it won’t matter much.
Getting to play them game is good enough for me.

I hope Guerrilla helps 3rd party developers at GDC.

  • ““Yeah, one game out of 10 that they’ve released, let’s party!”

Yeah, you’re right. We’ll just forget all the great things that Capcom has done for the PlayStation community this gen and just focus on the trophy thing.

    Are you high?”

Wait. What has Capcom actually done for the Playstation community this generation? Released a second rate port in the form of Lost Planet. A game that performs so badly online (SFHD) that SCEE has refused to certify it. Implied that trophies were going to be on Bionic Commando: Rearmed and SFHD, which seems isn’t the case. Moved MH3 to the Wii.

  • To Mr Shawn Baxter (which btw is a fitting name for RE character)
    Is this stuff for real:
    http://www.andriasang.com/e/articles/2009/02/03/sfiv_re5_home_collaborations/images/2132374700

Don’t be afraid to confirm cause it might just be a deal breaker for me. The controls still bug me but the overall game is fun as hell.

  • played it! loved it! gettin it!… the only real thing you have to get used to is the L1 to aim which doesnt bother me at all…

and i could care less about the dumb stuff that people nit-pick about like “that system has better smoke effects..” and how games like R2 “werent dark enough”… the games sick cant we just say that? come on now… people are gettin way too martha stewart-ish about games…

  • whoa just glancing at the previous comments leads me to believe that i missed a fanboy war even on playstation.blog.. hmmmmm… and this isnt even an exclusive to begin with….. wtf is the world coming to?.. we never argued so much about games back in the NES/Sega times..

  • smoke the truth is hard to see if you’re blind folded . the simple fact that the ps3 can’t handle graphics on re5 or lost planet, i can’t even put into words [DELETED] i wouldn’t be surprised if street fighter 4 on ps3 runs at 320p. [DELETED]
p.s i typed this on my slow [DELETED] ps3 browser

  • There is some online issues with the co op with friends..it doesnt join or when it does sometimes the person hosting the game its very dark and dim.

  • Good point. Though I have to admit that I’ve participated in this mess.

My guess is both systems have similar capabilities and libraries so both sides are relatively insecure. It isn’t like last generation where PS games were always worse than the Xbox or Gamecube, but the PS library as whole was significantly larger than either of its competitors so every console had one area it excelled in.

  • @332

Mortal Kombat was better on sega than super nes.

  • Played the Demo on both my PS3 and 360. I would rather have it on my PS3, but will be getting it on my 360. Simply put I am running out of room on my 60 gig PS3, and all this deleting, and re-downloading from the PSN is getting really old, REALLY OLD. Heck I am transferring crap to my PSP 8 gig stick to free up room on my PS3..that sucks! Yes all I need to do is go out and buy a 500 gig or bigger hard-drive, but I would have rather have just shelled out the extra $100.00 and had a larger hard-drive in the PS3 to begin with and not hassle with all this transferring crap.

And this saying Blu-ray is 2x speed and 360 drive is 15x speed…so what…still give the consumer the option to sit through load times if they have no space left on there hard-drives, like me…Oh well I will get RE5 on 360 and KillZone 2 on PS3…I guess CapLazy dosen’t care which system I buy it for, just so long as I buy it…it all goes in the same cash bin right?

  • I stopped playing RE games at Nemesis because I couldnt stand the controls any longer. I DEALT with them in the first two games, TOLERATED them, SUFFERED THROUGH them because Resident Evil was so awesome and different from anything else on the market that suffering through the controls was worth it in the end.

Here we are.. what? 10? 15 years later? FIVE games, 3 (crappy) movies.. The novelty has gone. You guys don’t honestly expect the world to sit around and wait for you, do you? You don’t expect the practices of PS1 development to hold firm today do you?

Japan’s game development is truly stuck in the past. I cling to the hope that Capcom, being the most western of Japanese based game companies, can pull their roots from the tired soil of that isolated island nation and join the rest of the world in the 21st century.

  • this is just a taste for the playstation store update this week….. KILLZONE 2!!!!!

  • I liked the demo… apart from a single crash after one of the cutscenes, it ran smoothly. And the co-op is great! Better than L4D imo…

I really wasn’t interested in RE5 before but now I think I will definitely pick this game up… granted that I have time left over from KZ2

  • Reading through these comments apparently it’s too damn hard for most of you to press pause, and go change the control scheme to one that works for you. I suggest control scheme A.

  • @ Korbei83…
Stay your tongue! Mila Jovovich is awesome, and hot! The games were always creepy and difficult because of the non-linear control scheme. Try the demo again with “Type D”. It may be more enjoyable the second time around.

  • @frostquake

its really not hard to swap hard drives……i have a 250gb and love it and if your planning on playing future ps3 games your gonna have 2 do it anyway.

  • yeah ive 2 say if the contols were simple it just wouldn’t be resident evil…..the contols help the suspense and keep you on the edge of your seat.

  • 5GB install will make loadings lightning fast, so it’s cool; but where is 60 fps like Capcom promised at development start…
