LocoRoco 2 Review Roundup

Hello PlayStation Bloggers!

No.. I’m not back to make excuses for losing to Kumi the other day in that mini-game…

LocoRoco 2 Planet Theme screenshot

The new LocoRoco 2 Planet theme for both PSP and PS3!

Yes, okay, I admit, that was pretty pathetic. However, I would like to share how excited we are on how LocoRoco 2 was reviewed this week!

“LocoRoco 2 is the most uplifting game available…” – Videogamer.com Score: 9/10

With comments like this, I’d say it’s a no-brainer to go out and get your copy! I mean, really…20 bucks doesn’t get you very far these days.

I have worked here at SCE for 12 years on excellent franchises and I have to say LocoRoco 2 was one of the most enjoyable titles I’ve been on. Those of you who have played the first LocoRoco will immediately notice the improvements to the core physics or A.I., let alone the newly added features. For those new to the LocoRoco franchise, you have joined in at the right time regardless (the first one was great fun too though!). Just ask GameInformer:

“Newcomers should jump right into the sequel despite the “2” on the box…PSP owners would be crazy to pass this one by.” – Game Informer Score: 9.25/10

Whether you are a constantly moving jet setter or if you are a parent who just wants to keep the little ones in the back seat of your car happy…(or busy), LocoRoco 2 is a perfect game for those on the go. It doesn’t take heavy mental investment to play. It’s fun, casual, and just makes you smile. During rough times like this, I think anybody can use a smile booster. LocoRoco 2 will certainly help you out!

“…just the kind of game you want in your pocket.” – IGN Score: 9.1/10 (Editor’s Choice Award)

I also had the chance to hook up with the original creator of the LocoRoco franchise, Tsutomu Kouno, 2 weeks ago when I flew out to Tokyo for some meetings. Tsutomu and I actually joined the force together in 1997, back in the time when our Tokyo office had less than 400 employees (!). Below is a quick hello to you all from Tsutomu:

LocoRoco is a solid cluster of my favorite elements; play, music and representation.
This time, we were able to add more elements to the rolling snowball to make the cluster into a snowman.
I truly hope you will enjoy your LocoRoco 2 experience!

As I mentioned above, it was so much fun working on this project. Now that LocoRoco 2 is in stores, I’m hoping we can extend the joy and excitement to as many people out there as possible. Coupled with the sweepstakes and the many goodies we have for you on the PSN (check out the New LocoRoco 2 Planet theme for both your PSP and PS3!), I think you’re in for a good ride!

To close this post, we would like to share with you the launch trailer for LocoRoco 2. I think this summarizes the colorful, playful and cheerful excitement that is jam packed into this $20 UMD.

If this great video hasn’t convinced you, I hope the rest of these awesome reviews will help!

“LocoRoco 2’s fantastic level designs, addicting mini-games and gameplay left a smile on my face a mile long.” – GamePro.com Score: 4/5

“Still hands-down the cutest franchise on the PSP.” – GameSpot Score: 8.5/10

“Crazy, slaphappy jubilance.” – GameRevolution Score: 83% (B+)

“A great sequel to one of the PSP’s best franchises, LocoRoco 2 is definitely a game fans of the original will want in their collection.” – Gamezone Score: 8.2 / 10

“It’s one of the best experiences for the PSP.” – Gamer2.0 Score: 8.6/10

“LocoRoco 2 is a great title at a great price point.” – Destructoid Review 8.5/10

“There is no better game if you are feeling down or only have a few minutes to play.” – Kombo Review: 9.0/10

“Loco Roco 2 is a refreshing, deep and thoroughly enjoyable breath of fresh air.” – Joystiq

“The kind of game you can pass to a child for a long car ride” – Children’s Technology Review Editor’s Choice Award – 4.8 stars (out of five)

Enjoy LocoRoco 2 y’all, and thanks for the support!

  • I will be getting LocoRoco 2! Never got the first one. Do you recommend I play the first one?

    • Hi there!

You don\’t necessarily need to play the first version, and can jump right into LocoRoco 2.

However, if you decide you like the feel, you might find it interesting to play the first one to

      1) truly become and claim you are a LocoRoco fan :-)

      2) simply to compare what we have done in the past year and a half

      Enjoy!

  • Congrats on the game launch!

LOL it is early in the morning and I am kinda tired–but holy crap that trailer woke me up! It sounded like you were torturing chipmunks for the soundtrack LOL!

I will probably have to pick this one up–but man so many games coming out SF4, RE5, KZ2, Prinny, Resistance PSP, Samurai Showdown Anthology—LOL it is nice to be broke in this kind of way!

Just curious, are you guys ever going to do a full blown Loco Roco on PS3 as a DLC game? I mean one where you actually tilt the world instead of control a butterfly?

    • >Congrats on the game launch!

      Thanks!
It was really a pleasure working on this game. Loved it all the way thru!

      >full blown Loco Roco on PS3

No plans as of now, but your request (and many other warm comments) has been noted and brought up to the team to consider for future projects.

  • Please, the new locoroco game for psn!

  • There are a lot of psp games I’d love to buy, but I don’t have a psp. You guys should really put some ps3 playable versions of the game on psn. I’d buy them in a heartbeat.

  • I only ever played the demo for the 1st one. when i went to buy it the store was out of stock but they recommended the 2nd. they were about the same price so i said yes and don’t regret anything. BUY IT!!!!!!

  • I bought this day 1 and all I have to say is…. I haven’t opened it yet! I had never played the original. So, the day before 2 was released, I found a new copy of Locoroco 1 at CC and now i want to finish that first!

  • I must ask this question to make sure that it isn’t a bug in the game. I bought the game yesterday and an error occured.

During the intro level, at the point that you grab the dandelion fluff so you can float down the stage something wierd happened to me. The game stopped playing and the word dumping appeared on the screen and gameplay stopped for about 30 secs. It was the one and only time that I saw it since playing.

    • I\’m sorry to hear about this..

From the gazillion times I\’ve played LR2, strangely, I have not encountered this problem..

I will make note of this, however, in hope to solve problems for any possible future products.

Please give us a shout if this happens again.
      (hopefully not…)

Thanks for your patience and for playing LocoRoco 2!!!

  • Hpedni- just get a psp! Games like this and Patapon are $20 new and are better than a lot of $60 PS3 games!

  • Thanks for getting me addicted to another LocoRoco game…..Now I have to charge up my PSP a lot more.

  • Picked this up last weekend. This is what video games are about – fun, relaxing gaming that makes you smile.

    Also the price-point!

If you own a PSP, you need to purchase this game. It’s a requirement.

  • Dam if only it was on the ps store, I would buy it in an instant

  • It’s so strange (in a good way) seeing a Locoroco 2 post with a Killzone 2 post right below it. Totally opposite ends of the spectrum there. :)

I still need to get Locoroco 2, probably this weekend.

  • Yea yea yea whatever I think this game is ok.

  • I might pick this up later.. To busy right now just bought Sega collection.. To relive childhood dreams (never in my life have I owned 40 Gensis Games) never could afford it.. And I’m loveing it to much. Plus next week is Killzone.. Sucks to many good games!!!

  • Game looks great, congrats

  • Anyone think its weird that they used the PSP-2000 for the ad?

    • Whomever put that together probably didn\’t have the latest artwork :-(

Good eye for spotting that my friend!

  • I’m starting to notice that with each day passing by, friends buying a PS3, nice games coming out, my Xbox 360 stays untouched.

I think I’ll sell it, eventually, if only the communication functionalities on the PS3/PSN would be a bit better! Heck, I’d even pay for it!

Me and my friend all bought the official headset, so we can voicechat properly during online games. We noticed, however, that with Call of Duty: World at War the VOIP-quality was pretty bad.
That’s weird, because in LittleBigPlanet it’s crystal clear. Is there some sort of limitation put on the ammount of KhZ in COD:WoW?

Anyway, it does happen pretty often that (with the limited party and invite-functionality of some games) we want to chat through XMB, to discuss server-options, or just to talk about the weather… no matter what game we’re playing, or what website we’re visiting. Surely, the XMB and PS3 are powerful enough to do this! .. Right? I mean.. I hope so! :(

  • I also hope the Killzone 2 party/invite/join-system will be good, just like in LBP.
Why don’t you guys create something that works the same in every game, through XMB, so we can invite/join people? Or make the one that is used in games like Soul Calibur IV and BattleField: BC mandatory. That works pretty well, because you can’t miss the messages.

Speaking of messages, by the way: Could you add the option of a noticication-sound when receiving a message, please?

I read in a reaction to a comment that you guys actually KNOW we want cross game-chat badly. That’s a relief!
So, any word on when it’ll be available? If it ever will be.

@ Jeff: Could you PLEASE be so kind to reply to my message(s)

  • Congratulations on the great reviews!

  • O, and also: Congratulations on the great reviews and the PS Store line-up. Flower is awesome!

  • when is the PS3 version coming out?, I could use a little happiness.

  • For the $20 they’re selling it for in America, nobody should hesitate to buy it. I paid twice as much when it was released here in Europe but it was worth every cent. Of course it’s similar to LocoRoco 1, but it’s a much better and more refined game.
This and Patapon are games every PSP owner should try – and I too wish they’d both come to PSN soon.

  • I really liked the first game. If it was in the ps store I would get it for sure, but oh well

  • sounds like you guys have duplicated the success on review for your second go at loco roco. couldn’t be happier that reviewers are enjoying it. i look forward to when i get paid so i can make this mine. im sure all be addicted all over again.

    peace,
    Lh

  • I would like to see Loco Roco for PS3.

  • This game is so aweosme, I love the first one, and the second one does not disappoint.
It’s way more fun than any comparable titles on the rival system.

  • why cant it come out on the ps3 via store download??? or disc???

  • Bring it to PS3 with Analog Stick/Sixaxis tilt – control. And Dualshock 3 support. And 1080p.
    Please.
I´ll buy it even for 10 more buck´s than the PSP version.

  • PSP trophies. Needs to happen.

  • i would give it 10/10 tbh its amazing

  • For those of you that dont have this game…

Stop reading these comments and go get this game now! hehe…

I never thought I could get into a game like this. I can’t put my PSP down now!!

  • Well, my review of this post was 5/5. :)

  • The first game is actually a game I prefer watching than playing. The gameplay I just find irritating and tedious but I like watching and listening to it and I find it totally charming. Is that weird? I didn’t enjoy playing Patapon either. I’m glad games like these exist for the PSP though even if that ain’t my sorta thing. Cater to everyone’s tastes and sell more consoles.

  • Wheres the PS3 version? Meh, never picking until its on PS3.

  • It is on PS3, on the PSN.

    LocoRoco Cocorocho (sp?)

LocoRoco2 is a blast. I never played the 1st one, but I am thoroughly enjoying #2. It’s definitely going to last a long time also.

  • @Caemgen

Stop spamming this forum with your garbage. Don’t you dare pretend to speak for PS3 owners.

Go play your piece of crap RRoD box if you think that stupid little feature is so important to you.

  • Nice. Is this game supposed to be released on the PlayStation Network? I would like to know because I really want to buy this game, but a download is more convenient in the long run. Thanks!

  • pre-ordered and got my copy on launch day…it is as awesome and MORE than the first…which was EXTREMELY addicting.

  • Still no valid reason to delay the downloadable release.

Are you really able to sucker people into buying the game twice that way?

  • this is such a great game!

  • WOW so Game Informer actually goes into the hundredth decimal? WHY!! LOL

They should have given this game a 9.504358237834584937534985734987534759847359834759874359873495720759843

thats more realistic. I planned out every single one of those digits, this game deserves them all!!

  • Hey terry- game chat is important. Nobody has headsets on the ps3 and if they do, like myself, they rarely use them. I have the official Sony headset which is so unreliable that it’s sad.The voice quality is so poor on LBP, Motorstorm PR and R2 that I don’t even use it.

Why would you even play games online without communication. It’s pointless.

    Still haven’t opened Locoroco 2!

  • Still tackling Ultimate Ghouls & Goblins… man that game is rough! Much like it’s predecessors. Loco Roco Is much fun, and less challenging, think it may have to wait.

  • @ Terry:
I speak for a lot of gamers out there. Trust me.

It doesn’t matter that you don’t like voicechat. You don’t have to use it. And if it’s there, it doesn’t bother you, right?

But for online gamers, clans, team-based games, HQ voicechat IS important.

  • ‘Why would you even play games online without communication. It’s pointless.’

Personally most of the time I don’t even need it. Happy enough with the instant typing with a keyboard on LittleBigPlanet and in games like Burnout Paradise it seems even when no one in a game has a microphone it makes no difference to what you’re doing no matter if it’s a race or challenge or whatever. I own both a bluetooth headset and the Playstation Eye and I like the sound quality on both but I rarely use them in a game as I grew tired of hearing foul mouthed brats yelling, and having to put up with some idiot playing his rap crap through his microphone and hearing some baby constantly crying through someone elses, so I tend to just mute everybody now.

  • I’ve already beaten Locoroco 2… (Though I haven’t completed the Mui Mui house just yet…) and it is one of my favorite franchises! Seriously, you can play this game anytime and it just makes you SO happy!!!!

    • Yes, so much fun isn\’t it?

I\’m in the same boat when it comes to completing the Mui Mui house…

Remember folks, there is a nice reward for that accomplishment. The game will prompt you to go to our LocoRoco 2 US website for something special.

      URL
      http://www.locoroco.com/pc/index.php

Don\’t forget the wallpapers and XMB themes (PS3 and PSP) that we have for you on the PSN!!!

  • What is that crazy song? I kinda want to download it lol Anyone know?

  • I support the PSP trophies motion.

But still I think game developers add their own in-game trophy system, for example the LocoHouse stuff you unlock in the first one.

  • I really enjoy the game! I didnt play the first one but i bought the one on PS3 who was a little different. Its a great franchise and for that price everyone with a PSP should get it!

  • Hello , congrats on the good reviews. I just noticed that the original Loco Roco is $22.99 on the psn store and this new game is $19.99. I think a pricecut on the original is in order , no ?
