Fat Princess Interview – SCEA Producers Answer Your Questions

Posted by Chris Morell // Senior Specialist, Social Media

It’s day two of the PlayStation.Blog.Lounge at the 2009 Game Developers Conference, and developer Titan Studios is showing off the upcoming PSN game Fat Princess. We know you’ve been asking tons of questions about the game, so Jeff sat down with SCEA Senior Producer Deborah Mars and Associate Producer Matt Morton for some great info on the game that we know you’ve been waiting to hear. Enjoy.

Can’t wait. Making a custom character should be cool.
Just a curious thought. I bet Nintendy would love to have the PS3s graphic ability as the screens I’ve seen would make a awesome Zelda.

15

Ghost_Shrimp  |  March 25th, 2009 at 10:32 am

This looks like the best PSN game ever. I wish it would come out already.

16

Arje  |  March 25th, 2009 at 10:33 am

That was a short interview… I want more!!! D:

Aah! I wanna play it!!!

StrykerIsland  |  March 25th, 2009 at 10:33 am

My most-wanted PSN game of 2009, can’t wait. I’m praying the online functionality is super sleek. Please focus on that aspect, as a poor implementation could really sour the experience.

19

AmericanNinja1  |  March 25th, 2009 at 10:34 am

AWESOME! Day 1 for me! :)

20

Elvick_  |  March 25th, 2009 at 10:34 am

I can’t wait for this game.

It looks so amazingly fun. I’ve been waiting for this game since I first heard of it. Waiting very impatiently.

It’s my most anticipated game of this year. I was hoping for an earlier release than this Summer though. Or at least a solid date. Maybe later we’ll get one.

TheHater2  |  March 25th, 2009 at 10:36 am

When is it coming out? That all we need to know. I want to feed the Princess cake :)

23

Audioboxer  |  March 25th, 2009 at 10:39 am

Looking great :D

Want to hear more about this game whenever possible.

24

Xoonaka  |  March 25th, 2009 at 10:40 am

Aw, yeah, that was the most asked question was release window. Sucks that the brass doesn’t have any sort of answer for us, but I understand I suppose.

I must say though, I like the environments, but for the most part I think the people look pretty bad… not just the models, but the animations too.

Won’t keep me from buying this game though, it’s core gameplay is just way too awesome sounding for me to pass it up. CTF + RTS… awesome combo.

jimmy903  |  March 25th, 2009 at 10:40 am

Going once, going twice, SOLD!

26

digplans  |  March 25th, 2009 at 10:41 am

Holy moly Jeff, you are ON POINT with all these developer interviews. Workin hard for the readers, I see. Mad props your way.

I wasn’t interested in Fat Princess before this interview (probably cause I knew nothing about it and never bothered to research it), but man now it looks as though it’s going to be killer! I’m really into games with interesting art styles (PJ Eden and Flower come to mind). In my own opinion, these are the kinds of games that really engage me in a fantastic alternate virtual reality – what games are for! Anyway, really looking forward to this now, looks incredibly unique and wildly fun.

sNsKid  |  March 25th, 2009 at 10:41 am

There are a lot of great PSN games being released soon. I’m definitely getting this one.

28

badboodah77  |  March 25th, 2009 at 10:43 am

@ #24,

Where exactly have you seen the game in motion to be able to comment on the animations?

29

Elvick_  |  March 25th, 2009 at 10:45 am

IGN’s preview said it would release sometime in the Summer.

30

Elvick_  |  March 25th, 2009 at 10:46 am

@badboodah77 – Gametrailers has a couple videos of the game. They were earlier builds I believe, but the game looks great even then.

31

EL_Hintern  |  March 25th, 2009 at 10:46 am

They sent it in for ESBR Rating? So this means its almost complete right?

32

Neil  |  March 25th, 2009 at 10:47 am

Wow, can’t wait for this game.

33

PasteyMF  |  March 25th, 2009 at 10:55 am

@28

You can see some of the animations in the video they just posted, like when they upgrade the priest building. Speaking of which, the animation is looking great compared to what we saw at E3 2008. Props to the animators & artists!

You guys are awesome for putting in a voice chat system. Good to hear that it’s working. :)

Any comment on a possible online party system? I would like to go from server to server without leaving my friends behind or having to scroll through a list of games to find where they’re playing.

34

remanutd5  |  March 25th, 2009 at 10:56 am

wow , i cant wait to for this game , looks really fun

35

Marauderxt  |  March 25th, 2009 at 10:56 am

I have a couple questions regarding the Worker class.

Yes the worker class is very important to upgrade the buildings and what not, but as the game goes on will the class become useless? What I mean is, eventually everything will be upgraded and after that is there anything else for the worker to do? You could say fight, but there are better classes for that.

I just see a problem where half the team mines resources and then upgrades everything then the Worker class never shows up again.

36

Febreze  |  March 25th, 2009 at 10:57 am

Jeff,

I heard one of the developers talking about playing a game with voice-chat functional. Does this mean Voice Chat is confirmed???

Honestly, not having voice-chat was the only thing doubting me from getting the game, but if its confirmed, COUNT ME IN!!!

Jeff Rubenstein's Avatar

Jeff Rubenstein replied on March 25, 2009 at 11:39 am

The game has voice chat, confirmed.

37

Marauderxt  |  March 25th, 2009 at 10:57 am

Oh and please make the voice chat Push to talk, I would like to actually hear what people are saying rather than it be a jumbled mess of 10 dif voices going at the same time.

Good interview Jeff, I was wondering if there was going to be custom sound tracks for this awsome release? Also you should add me on you PSN list if its not too crazy!

41

mywhitenoise  |  March 25th, 2009 at 11:02 am

didn’t answer everyones most asked question: WHEN’S IT COMING OUT!? :P

42

Elvick_  |  March 25th, 2009 at 11:05 am

@35 – The workers can be upgraded to throw bombs. Plus, I’m sure you’ll always have to restore some of the gates to the castle when the enemy destroys them to get into the castle and steal back their fat princess.

44

SPARDA  |  March 25th, 2009 at 11:06 am

That looks like a ton of fun.

Just a question:
– will the game support a friend party system and matchmaking ?

Thanks for the video.

Ugh..release date, release date, release date!!

Speaking of awesome PSN games, any hope for Wipeout HD DLC? That game is freaking amazing and needs some love!

48

Blkant  |  March 25th, 2009 at 11:09 am

Why must we continue to wait for this game!! I want it now! :(

49

NiavlysUS  |  March 25th, 2009 at 11:10 am

@35
From what I read/heard, the worker class gets an explosive at a certain hat upgrade, so the class can definatly join into the battle, as much as the priest primarily healing but also get that curse skill with the hat upgrade.
