PS3 Firmware (v2.70) Update

Eric Lempel's Avatar + Posted by Eric Lempel on Apr 01, 2009 // VP, Sony Network Entertainment

Hi everyone, we’re adding some great new features with the next PS3 firmware update (v2.70) that will continue to enhance your connected experience on the PS3. The 2.70 update brings a new Text Chat feature that enables you to communicate online with your PlayStation Network friends. Now, you’ll be able to chat with up to 15 online friends using the Wireless Keypad, on-screen keyboard, or other compatible keyboard peripherals. Not only can you chat with your friends instantly, but you can also access Text Chat while playing PS3 games and even participate in up to three chat rooms at once.

In addition to Text Chat, we’ve added a few more enhancements:

Friends list on the XMB (XrossMediaBar)

  • Sort your friends via their online status
  • Attach larger files to the messages you send to your friends (file size will increase from 1MB to 3MB)

Video delivery service on PlayStation Store

  • Video files you’ve purchased from the PlayStation Store can be backed up to an external storage device and then restored to PS3’s internal hard drive for playback – so you can clear up space on your hard drive and then restore the video anytime in the future
  • Videos you’ve purchased for PSP (PlayStation Portable) system can now be transferred to PS3 for playback

For a quick preview of Text Chat and some of the other 2.70 features, check out this video:

The 2.70 update will be released soon, and as always, we look forward to reading your feedback.

My system doesn’t boot at all anymore, after i did the restore, I restarted, thought things were better then BAM, audio frozen video unresponsive controllers.

HArd reboot, no video, attempt video reset, cant read text on screen, and unable to resolve.
At least it still looks pretty on my table.
I bought two new blue ray movies hoping they would have a fix out by now, and that seems to be a waste of money also.

My unit was rock solid with 2.6

Well, updated to 2.70. Sis and her bf played SoComm for a bit. Fast forward to tonight, my PS3 will not recognize blu-ray discs nor any of my other games like GT5, cd audio, SD dvd movies, PS2 games (60 gb version). If you guys have come across such a problem from 2.70, please provide a fix soon. I have had no problems up till this recent update. Thanks.

It seems there are some problems with the trophies.
I have 100% of Sega Megadrive but if i look at my trophies in the web it only show 93%, it happens as well when i compare trophies.

Yesterday i earned 2 bronze and 1 silver and my % didn´t increase too.

So, something is happen.

Well things are simple… update 2.70 sucks and sucks a lot…..
The issue here is that for some reason the majority of the codecs that was installed with 2.60 and earlier version were removed. Why this is hapenning? Two possibles reasons.

1. 2.70 update has bugs and this is bad…
2. Sony on purpose remove those codecs without any warning and if this is what was happenned then it is worse.

I believe that the real reason is the second one. Why?
I have a MYBookWorld NAS with mediatom as a media server and i was able to see divx, H.264 mpeg and also to hear mp3. After the upgrade i do not see the divx i see some hi def H.264 movies and i hear mp3 from the nas. I try to copy the divx to an external usb disk (with fat32) that i usually used to see some movies and the same thing …. no divx.

And all for what… to upgrade for text chat? I do not believe it… it outraged…

Well i am waiting for a patch or something otherwise there in SONY… you suck….i will never put anymore money in that machine since you do not respect our time nor our money….

Good bye playstation 3

When you guys add cross game invites just reuse some of the code from game launching in home to ensure that when developers support game launching they are also supporting cross game invites from the xmb, that would at least make them retroactive to a certain extent and ensure that when cross game invites come to the xmb, which I am sure they will, that people wont complain about the lack of games supported.
Great job with the update, too bad I need to get a new hard drive enclosure before I can get my ps3 working again :(

Just wanted to say this fixed my internet and PSN login issues. All this time it was the previous firmware that was stuffing up my login to the PSN and NOT my ISP. It was very annoying and prevented me from connecting to the PSN. And in the very very rare event that I did manage to login, it was log me out after 2-5 mins.

Thanks Sony for fixing this issue in the latest 2.70 firmware, and keep an eye on these sorts of issues!

idk where to go to say this so i will say it here, hope someone will see it and pass it on.

i heard something about having something similar to facebook or facebook itself going to ps3 in some way, shape, or form. i actually find this something VERY useful and interesting and something that will have the edge over M$ and you guys always seem to find new things and innovative unlike M$ and i thank and appreciate you guys for that and that’s why i like Sony.

another thing, have something similar to the ‘whats on your mind’ feature from facebook on the PSN, like on the buddy list. you can edit things that you want to say to your friends that are online and put it under your name for others to read, like what your trying to accomplish on a certain game or w/e. something like the comment but can type in more of what you want to say or w/e, be creative, =).

This looks great and all, the fact that the chat is better doesn’t help those of us who don’t have a keypad. And even though they do have an on-screen keyboard it is very slow to use. I would like to have a keyboard but I don’t think I would want to waste the money.

Please fix this update. It is killing third part peripherals (guitar controllers, ps2 to ps3 adaptors people use for their fighting sticks), preventing people from streaming from their network attatched storage and also causing generally more lag for a good chunk of gamers. Or at least give people the option to roll back their firmware updates. Even Windows gives people the option to undo patches! You don’t want to be beaten by Microsoft do you? This patch is terrible as it is, the features are ones that are used by a minority while destroying some used to many.

I love Sony, but I hate this patch. It’s a blemish on an otherwise solid investment.

This is a horrible update, After updating to Firmware v2.70, IT NO LONGER SUPPORTS ALL MY VIDEO FILES (MP4, xViD, MPEG etc) that used to play perfectly with Firmware v2.60! It’s Like the CODECS that were natively supported up till v2.60 were either disabled or removed. What kind of an upgrade does this? As there isn’t a way to roll back to v2.60 please address this issue with an immediate fix.

So, they took away the reason why I bought the system.
I now can not play Divx or Avi movies stored on my NAS or other servers in my house.
It was nice to access them thru my PS3 without download them into my PS3 and watch them in my PSP.
But why in the world would they do that?
I now need to convert my movies in to Mpeg2.
Oh well, they all are the same

I just basically want more in game xmb things. Voice chat in game would be nice but i am not overly crazy about it. In game music would be cool as well as a better in game internet browser where you can go to whatever website you want.

I also wish Sony would somehow release a software emulation program u can get off of the store maybe for a small fee, sounds big but it would be cool to have these things. Keep it coming Sony!

\/\/ |-| /-\ T iS EVERYONE SO HAPPY ABOUT iN GAME TEXT CHAT/CHEATiNG!! so now in SOCOM, or COD or whatever game you kill n hide… now they made it 10x easier to tell everyone where your hiding, or running to! This has been the WORST idea yet. Solution, make more text space for sending messages the old way. Every game I’ve played since the update, whether with my clan or strangers, the first thing that happens is, the entire side enters text chat room. Now nobody has to be bothered with sending individual messages, just type it up, and everyone gets the message. The old way: “…I dont feel like finding his name, then texting, by the time he gets it…” Please start thinkin of some bright ideas…SOON!! Maybe, play audio files you have saved??? You know, FUN stuff, not DUMB stuff!! And PLEASE get rid of SLANT 6!! WE MISS ZiPPeR!! Get us some MAPpacks/New Gear, voices, bodies, uniforms, guns, something!!

I recently like many other people have had a problem with an update causing issues with my PS3 console.(2.70) I contacted Sony who where helpful ,in that they sent me some useful suggestions on how to resolve the issue. Which in all fairness was very nice of them. In the end i still have a console that is not working properly, and i am having to send it off to be repaired. However how many people have to go through these issues before either Sony gets it right or people move over to a different platform. Having your console damaged or the functions of it removed (in my case the messaging system is not functioning )is not the way to keep customers loyal to a brand. At the moment Sony has loyal customers ,but for how long? Who knows. When customers are paying large ammounts of money for these entertainment systems ,these companies(i.e SONY)have a responsibility to get it right. Here’s a suggestion Sony, how about giving the console the ability to role back to the previous firmware.Seeing as though many, many many, many, many loyal customers are having this isuue. Just check your chat rooms Sony! I remain loyal to Sony ,but for how long i don’t know. C’mon Sony ,get your act together. Magiccarrot, signing out.

My Blueray disc drive will not play anything CD, DVD, BD. I’m all for coincidental meltdown however in all honesty after reading hundreds of complaints exact in form, I have my doubts. My Blueray drive went from working to nothing. This seems to point to software not hardware. I’m not going to fork over $150 to have it fixed especially if my suspicions are correct since my warranty is up I’m going to open up the beast and see if indeed it is hardware though I highly doubt it. I’ve already wipe the hard drive with no success. -_- …Hmmm
