PS3 Firmware (v2.70) Update

Eric Lempel's Avatar Posted by on Apr 01, 2009 // SVP, PlayStation Network

Hi everyone, we’re adding some great new features with the next PS3 firmware update (v2.70) that will continue to enhance your connected experience on the PS3. The 2.70 update brings a new Text Chat feature that enables you to communicate online with your PlayStation Network friends. Now, you’ll be able to chat with up to 15 online friends using the Wireless Keypad, on-screen keyboard, or other compatible keyboard peripherals. Not only can you chat with your friends instantly, but you can also access Text Chat while playing PS3 games and even participate in up to three chat rooms at once.

In addition to Text Chat, we’ve added a few more enhancements:

Friends list on the XMB (XrossMediaBar)

  • Sort your friends via their online status
  • Attach larger files to the messages you send to your friends (file size will increase from 1MB to 3MB)

Video delivery service on PlayStation Store

  • Video files you’ve purchased from the PlayStation Store can be backed up to an external storage device and then restored to PS3’s internal hard drive for playback – so you can clear up space on your hard drive and then restore the video anytime in the future
  • Videos you’ve purchased for PSP (PlayStation Portable) system can now be transferred to PS3 for playback

For a quick preview of Text Chat and some of the other 2.70 features, check out this video:

The 2.70 update will be released soon, and as always, we look forward to reading your feedback.

PS3 has no headphones socket, so it would be really great to be able to connect a bluetooth a2dp headset. Will the support for a2dp bluetooth profile implemented anytime soon?

I like all the new features…but whne can we get the same features on PS3 that the PSP has?

The ps3 needs the same support of Rss and internet radio that the psp does.

I want to be able to use the same features when I am at home on the ps3 It needs PSP RSS function the most.

2.70 update is rubbish – ruined my multimedia capabilities!!!!

Why oh Why would you remove DIVX features in a an update??? That is a Downgrade people. SONY please for the love of GOD, ALLAH, Buddha and whoever else is listening. PLEASE get a fix, otherwise i will need to get a new media center like a an XBOX360, its a simple as that…..

I have been a lifelong sony purchaser, but im thinking about not being opne for much longer if this doesnt get fixed, its one thing never having the features, but withdrawing them once we get reliant on them…BAD FORM SONY….

Well I lie the fact that you can text chat in a party with your friends during the game your playing. Though I’d like if you could just MIC CHAT with your friends in a party made by you. On Xbox 360, your given this option to chat with mics in a party. Also I,d like if you could listen to music on your PS3, while playing your game. Whats the point in music if you can’t listen while playing your game.Even Xbox 360 hjas this option again. So, I hope all of Sony looks in to this because the Xbox 360 is beating the Playstation 3 in parties and music. Please be sure this is on the nxt update Sony.~~Thanks

Can we please get the ability to create custom folders (and folders inside folders)? Currently there is no real value to add a bigger HDD as the content stored on it is hardly accessibile in a reasonable manner (scrolling 1 minute from A to Z is not something i want)

Honestly, why remove the codecs? I was about to download this until I saw all these people talking about codecs going Kaboom and lens failures on the rise.

Epic fail, Sony. Epic fail.

I haven’t played my PS3 in a while and I just downloaded the newest upgrade (not sure if it’s this one here), but nothing works correctly now. I can’t access the main screen while playing games, nothing loads the way it should and my system keeps rebooting itself.

Stop with all of the pointless updates and just let us play our games. Seriously, this isn’t AOL and nobody is going to chat with their friends. I just want to play my games, but with all of these updates, I can’t even do that.

Thanks for letting me spend $400 on a video game console that won’t even let me play video games. Classy…very classy.

All I want is to play my game in all of my games. I’d like voice chat as well but in game custom music is what I want most of all. This needs to be made as a console feature and shouldn’t be given to developers to include as up to now it is only mainly EA-published games that are suppoting it. Smaller game companies are struggling to include it. In game music should be implemented from the PS3 direct. Please Eric and team can we have this for the next firmware update. This will make my PS3 experience complete.

Definitely good improvements, but looking forward to cross game chat with pre selected friends. The cross game text chat is a lot better than nothing though. Coming from playing mostly PC games, this was a huge problem to worry about, but at least we can now text chat to get in the same games.

Microsoft own the rights to Custom Soundtracks (In Game Music), that is why Sony have left it up to the developers of each game as to whether they implement it or not, Sony have provided the means but can’t provide the feature in all games

When is there going to be a better system for assigning controller numbers? My problem is that the controller used to remotely turn on the system is often assigned something other than the first controller spot, if some other sort of controller is plugged into the USB ports. This is OK for use in the XMB, but I think it should switch the controller used to enter into a game to controller number #1, or at least give an option to let it automatically do it. Otherwise I have to switch it manually in the XMB.

Yes I have heard about this Microsoft patent but is this confirmed by Sony or by Microsoft to be the actual reason? Nobody at Sony has confirmed this to the case. If this patent is the reason why Sony can’t give us custom soundtracks then surely there must be a better loop hole than the one they have at the moment giving it to developers to include, as only a select number of developers are including custom music in their games and rightly so, there is no way a developer is going to phase out their own game soundtrack which they spend lots of $$$$ on just for it to be replaced by a user created soundtrack. No Sony need to come up with a different method somehow. Maybe enable custom soundtracks from the PSP or an IPod instead of the PS3.

I think you folks do a wonderful job in keeping the interface of the PS3 fresh for not only gamers, but media center people as well. I for example just bought an HD camcorder that records in AVC-HD. I know Sony makes some consumer camcorders that record in this format. I think it would be pretty amazing for Sony to add AVC-HD support (Sony AND Canon, please) so we could take our clips and watch directly on the PS3. Think about it. Wow… just, wow!

I HATE voice chat with a passion.
