Hi everyone, we’re adding some great new features with the next PS3 firmware update (v2.70) that will continue to enhance your connected experience on the PS3. The 2.70 update brings a new Text Chat feature that enables you to communicate online with your PlayStation Network friends. Now, you’ll be able to chat with up to 15 online friends using the Wireless Keypad, on-screen keyboard, or other compatible keyboard peripherals. Not only can you chat with your friends instantly, but you can also access Text Chat while playing PS3 games and even participate in up to three chat rooms at once.
In addition to Text Chat, we’ve added a few more enhancements:
Friends list on the XMB (XrossMediaBar)
- Sort your friends via their online status
- Attach larger files to the messages you send to your friends (file size will increase from 1MB to 3MB)
Video delivery service on PlayStation Store
- Video files you’ve purchased from the PlayStation Store can be backed up to an external storage device and then restored to PS3’s internal hard drive for playback – so you can clear up space on your hard drive and then restore the video anytime in the future
- Videos you’ve purchased for PSP (PlayStation Portable) system can now be transferred to PS3 for playback

But I’ve got too say, I don’t think the text chat will be very useful while playing a game,
Having to press the PS button, then click on the chat, will be “inconvenient” and slow.
Take a note out of the PC’s book,
where you just type on your keyboard In game
And the messages appear on the bottom of the screen with their ID beside It. (Only people In your ps3 chat can see It though)

Is there anyone that works at Sony that isn’t a complete moron? How could anyone at that corporation think that text chat rooms while in a game was a good idea?
I know it’s a free service, and I know that we should be thankful that we’re getting updates at ALL, but I mean, when you give us the ability to TEXT chat cross-game, why is it we can’t VOICE chat cross game?
Playing a FPS and TEXT chatting will get you killed quicker than quick, even under the best circumstances. We NEED cross-game VOICE chat…you did it with the text, now do it with the voice, please.
this is a joke right? Everyone has been asking for cross game chat for ages and still doing this outdated text chat garbage. Cross game voice private chat is the MOST WANTED function that everyone has been asking for ages and they rather spend time to upgrade on garbage functions. And the damn clock and battery thing better be fix.
Also as requested and posted numerous times. Eric, please fix battery icon on the top right hand corner. Can you believe this problem has been going on now for like 3 firmware updates?

Yes, text chat is chatting with your friends instantly, notice how the messages pop up INSTANTLY? You can do this IN GAME and have 3 CHAT ROOMS AT ONCE.

killzone 2 has in game music but only works online
voice messages? Video messages? Upgraded XMB? In game chat? Cross game invite system? Faster simplier in game xmb? Better player card?

First off all what made yall think that this update was going to be the update of in-game chat? Seriously find me a quote or something from Sony that said this update contains such a thing?
Can you back up any purchased movies and TV shows when i back up the ps3 as a whole?? or do i have to back up the movies and tv shows separately from the regular ps3 back utility?

Voice Chat is the number 1 prioritey feature above anything else we want.

I kinda have to agree with some of the people here. Although I’m sure many people will love being able to text each other in-game (which we can already do with messages), most people don’t care for it it seems.
Most people want voice chat. I know my brother prefers the 360 over the PS3 (shun the nonbeliever!) at the moment JUST because he can talk with his buddies in game. Oh, and because of Netflix…
I guess what I’m really trying to say is that all of us want to be able to talk to people in game, not text. I’m sorry, Sony, but you get a failing grade on this update from me.

No. They’ve simply modified the current option to “Start a New Chat” which currently, is a video-only option.
Now, you have to select if you want a video or text chat room, but that’s while in the XMB.
When you are in a game, if you choose that video option, it’ll boot you right out of the game, as it does now.
If that feature was in there, don’t you think he would be promoting the hell out of it?

this news is about as good as the ps2 price drop hahahaha its garbage and anyone who thinks otherwise has their head in the sand as a typical fanboy. i used to be a HC sony fan but now i have just lost all interest. sony are just too slow to react to the needs and wants of the consumers. ditch the ps2! yeah its still selling but if you got rid of that old piece of junk the ps3 might start selling and at least try and compete with the opposition.
I watch the video again… If the voice chat also works in game, I will send you a dozen chocolate chip cookies and a bottle of ginger ale.
the ps3 exclusives are way better than the 360’s but that doesnt sell systems completely. giving people what they want sells systems. the more “usefull/wanted/needed” features you pour into it the more people will talk positively about it. what does positive feedback do? thats right, it sells!!!!!!!

I believe the only thing clicking on the voice chat does is send you to the old chat room thing. Sadly enough, I don’t think you can do anything else…

For all I know voice chat may can only be used if the in game xmb is up. And if that’s the case then feature is practically useless. You should be able to use voice chat while playing the game because putting up the in game xmb the whole time your using voice chat just sucks. He should have used voice chat in the video because if everyone wanted to text, people wouldn’t be asking for voice chat. So you READ the description again because that quote can mean two different things.
