Hi everyone, we’re adding some great new features with the next PS3 firmware update (v2.70) that will continue to enhance your connected experience on the PS3. The 2.70 update brings a new Text Chat feature that enables you to communicate online with your PlayStation Network friends. Now, you’ll be able to chat with up to 15 online friends using the Wireless Keypad, on-screen keyboard, or other compatible keyboard peripherals. Not only can you chat with your friends instantly, but you can also access Text Chat while playing PS3 games and even participate in up to three chat rooms at once.
In addition to Text Chat, we’ve added a few more enhancements:
Friends list on the XMB (XrossMediaBar)
- Sort your friends via their online status
- Attach larger files to the messages you send to your friends (file size will increase from 1MB to 3MB)
Video delivery service on PlayStation Store
- Video files you’ve purchased from the PlayStation Store can be backed up to an external storage device and then restored to PS3’s internal hard drive for playback – so you can clear up space on your hard drive and then restore the video anytime in the future
- Videos you’ve purchased for PSP (PlayStation Portable) system can now be transferred to PS3 for playback

No there is not in game VOICE CHAT- they would say if there was as thats THE BIGGEST reason the other console’s online service is BETTER.
chat instantly refers to the chat room (when in XMB) and then the second part of the sentence refers to the chatroom staying active while you are in a game.
IN GAME text chat is utterly USELESS. Yeah , lemme hit PS out and TEXT during Warhawk/Killzone etc…opps DEAD…everytime.
The Headset icon people keep talking about IS ALREADY THERE- has been there FOREVER- its only for out of game voice chat- thats NOT a new icon/feature.
The backup function is ok I suppose- I have a 500 Gig hdd from newegg (89 bucks) …so it means nothing at all to me.

Sadly, at first I thought this was an April fools joke. Seriously – text chat??? I suppose on the positive side of things this is a free update, but it’s usefulness and benefit to me is low. I’ll continue to wait for XMB cross-game voice chat; 2-4 people would be good enough. Ah well…

Ok Question? If i read correctly and heard correctly this doesnt include IN-GAME CHAT? Now hasnt the community, as in PSN,or the people on PSBlog been asking for In-Game Chat, and this 2.70 update doesnt include this feature we all Want and Need. Well i prefer In-Game over Text-Chat, who came up with that genius idea? like seriously. Anyway hopefully in game chat is included in the next update or this 2.70 update.

Hope the XMB loads ALOT faster than it did in the video if we are going to be txting back and forth. It it loads the same time it does now, the IM will fail.

Uh…it includes in game TEXT chat AFAIK. I’d like them to do voice chat, but I don’t think it’s there.

First of all I’m NunoV2. I’m here talking for me and ItIsINoga (These are our PSN ID’s). we live in Portugal and the PS3 is one of our major priorities. The thing is we don’t have the same services that you have in the USA. For example, the video store, the core digital magazine and some of DLC’s are not released in european countries. We would like to be treated the same way as everybody else. This does not mean we are not satisfied with your services. We are very happy with some of your features such as trophy support and In-Game XMB. But we would like to have some of the services that are not available to us.
Keep up the the good work and our compliments to the sony family.
PS: Please, if you are able to, include the Cross Game Chat feature in a future firmware upgrade because we are dying for it ! ^^

I wonder if SCEA really listens to people? this is OK, but is not what PS3 users really want. SCEA is missing the point people want others features which should have been in the system since ever. Please SCEA for once in this generation would you listen a take notes of things that will make your costumers happier

…in 1995. It’s inconvenient enough to send messages, who the hell is going to be using a text chatroom? While playing? I mean, did you even test this? I’d love to see a commercial for this or something. Some overly enthusiastic dude stops his game to navigate through the on-screen keypad and participate in some good ol’ fashioned “instant” messaging. I mean, even with a keyboard…this is just not a useful feature at all. A handful of people will use it just to try something new, and that’s it. What a waste.

This is great! I like the new chat feature very much.
I’m just a little sad that there were no mention of speeding up trophy syncing. Also, there’s a delay when you get a trophy in-game. Obtaining a Trophy should chime instantaneously. Not 2-5 seconds later.
Please add a small icon on the screen warning players that there’s a new message. I usually receive a new message while I’m away from the screen. Not noticing until I’m logging out or logging back in. The icon doesn’t have to stay constantly on the screen but, it could at least flash every 6-10 min.

ok thatss great that there are more additions coming. but is the text chat needed? i like the idea but really its the same thing as sending messages back and forth. i heard that voice messaging is supposed to be coming also, is that true? and instead of text chat during a game why not an audio chat during games, when you and your friends can play different games and still be talking to eachother, much like what the Xbox 360 offers. and also a suggestion for the future i would like to see some kind of reward for trophies, like themes you can apply to your profile card. but an in game chat room would deffinitly be a great addition

This is really appreciated. It’s been getting tiresome when I have to send short Subject-lines messages to my friend while playing GTA IV online.
I hope whoever reads the public response to official drop of the FW Update is ready to hear a lot of complaints that we still don’t have some type of Cross-Game Chat functionality. I’m betting you guys are probably saving it for the new FW Update though. Keep the good stuff rolling.

I think there should press some button on the sixaxis or the keyboard to show the chat conversation in game without going through xmb. That way would be better, I think.

Is save portability in this update? I would love to get back into some games from my dead PS3 so I can continue getting trophies on them. Having spent many hours in these games it sucks not to be able to restore the saves into the exact same PSN account on a different machine.
Ok,it is good that you are comming out with new features all the time, making things easier to use and the text chat system is a reasonably good feature. However I have to say I’m very dissapointed that the rumoured; 30 sec voice messages and cross-game voice chat are not as yet a reality. You guys really have to get on that, cross game chat would be the biggest improvement since in-game XMB.
