Hi everyone, we’re adding some great new features with the next PS3 firmware update (v2.70) that will continue to enhance your connected experience on the PS3. The 2.70 update brings a new Text Chat feature that enables you to communicate online with your PlayStation Network friends. Now, you’ll be able to chat with up to 15 online friends using the Wireless Keypad, on-screen keyboard, or other compatible keyboard peripherals. Not only can you chat with your friends instantly, but you can also access Text Chat while playing PS3 games and even participate in up to three chat rooms at once.
In addition to Text Chat, we’ve added a few more enhancements:
Friends list on the XMB (XrossMediaBar)
- Sort your friends via their online status
- Attach larger files to the messages you send to your friends (file size will increase from 1MB to 3MB)
Video delivery service on PlayStation Store
- Video files you’ve purchased from the PlayStation Store can be backed up to an external storage device and then restored to PS3’s internal hard drive for playback – so you can clear up space on your hard drive and then restore the video anytime in the future
- Videos you’ve purchased for PSP (PlayStation Portable) system can now be transferred to PS3 for playback

insted of an in game text chat why not an audio chat where you and your friends can play different games and still communicate, much like what the Xbox 360 hs to offer. i heard voice messaging is comming is that true?

You can now cut & paste text on the internet browser.
You can also highlight a game icon on your XMB, press triangle and it can search the internet for info on that particular game.

OMFG really?!?!? Text chat is the best you can do??? How f’n retarded. Seriously. Who gives a crap about text chat? I can do that now! I want to be able to speak to my friends during a game NOT TYPE TO THEM!!!! Once again, I CAN DO THAT NOW!!! Put an ad in the paper, list a help wanted online, hang out in Microsoft’s parking lot to wait for one of their geeks to leave and kidnap them, do whatever, just get someone over there that’s smart enough to figure out how to program a voice chat already. This is just mind boggling how you can ignore adding fundimental communication functionality for SOOOOOO LONG. Disapointment once again. Thanks for not shaking my faith in your ability.

looking real forward to this update. when will we see a in-game voice chat room? that’s an feature we all would love to have also.
Oh, the clock thing – yes – move it! None of my AV appliances have clocks any more. It’s a pain having to wait for the battery indicator to disappear.
Do the people making the decisions at SCE even play games? I’m beginning to wonder…
this update sucks. how about fixing how laggy and slow PSN and the XMB is? it takes forever to compare trophies, send messages, etc. How about fixing that instead of adding stupid text chat? which no one wants. it’s too slow and not a very effective way to communicate when you’re trying to play a game.
now all we need is the ability to play PS2 on the newer systems and maybe througth firm and well be doing good, but good update still

If you pay close attention to this video, various times they show features for cross game chatting. Such as around 2:16 on the walkthrough, Eric shows us IN GAME how to sort people but if you pause and look when he hits triangle over the persons name, you seem that “Start New Chat” is not blacked out when in games in updates before 2.70 the “Start New Chat” is blacked out. 2.70 will have these features plus Cross Game Chat. Thanks Sony ;)

Sony why are you continuing to update our PS3 with useless features? Why not give what we the fans really want, it would make online gaming a lot better. Did we ever ask for any party chat? NO but instead of listening to what WE the owners of Playstation 3 really want you give yet another useless update, I didn’t mind the photo gallery update (Which was crap) but now this really? Word of advice buckle up or else.
No one wanted this feature. Please add the features we want and stop adding this useless garbage. Cross game VOICE chat would be a nice start.
We neeeeed voice chat with cross game and private chat rooms. I find myself using my 360 for chat just because the ps3 lacks this feature.

What they need to do is make allow us the option to pay for the service, for example, those who pay like, idk, 40 bucks a year, get free core episodes, updates b4 those who dont pay, more bandwith for faster PSN service, only then they will make money to put out better updates and at the same time give more service to PSN members who pay yearly. Also for those who dont have to pay, they should basically make it where those who dont pay basically get updates later, core episodes with money, and normal(current) bandwith speeds, know what i mean?
