New WipEout HD features

Hi everybody! I’m excited to bring to you news of an awesome update for WipEout HD. And perhaps the best news is you don’t have to wait long for it. Tomorrow, April 8, 2009, the V1.30 free update for WipEout HD will be available for download. The update will introduce a selection of new multiplayer features to the legendary anti-gravity racer. Check out the full details below.

Online Ranking

With over 50 ranks to progress through, there will be a new edge to online racing in WipEout HD. Your finishing position, speed class and the rank of your opponents will determine how many ranking points you are awarded as you strive to go from a Wipeout Trainee to a Wipeout Legend!

Podium Screen & Online Badges

  • A new podium screen will now display the top three finishers after each online race or tournament.
  • Regardless of whether you finish in the Top Three or not, every player has the chance of being awarded an ‘online badge’ in recognition of how they performed in the race.
  • There are 33 badges in total, examples of which are displayed here.

Connect easily with your friends

Game invites have now been introduced to WipEout HD to make it easy for you to invite your friends to join your game or for them to invite you! In addition, you will also be informed of any friends with an active online game and have the ability to join that game instantly!

Watch races in progress

If a race has started before you have had chance to join it, Spectator mode will allow you to watch that race. Within spectator mode, you can choose from four camera angles and select which ship to watch.

After the race has been completed, you will be taken back to the lobby with the other players so you can compete with them in the next race.

  • if those invites were home enabled then it would be more future proof as sony might enable the invite system on the xmb at some point allowing cross game invites in the process.
The last thing that would make this game perfect would be the possibility to have multiple psn accounts signed in at on once.

  • Nice update. A few extra tracks would be cool and next time, easier trophies. :-D

  • I agree with some of the other comments, this game is too hard. You either have to have a computer brain or be a big fat nerd to play this game.

  • Hello,

Very good update. The setup about the number of laps is great.
Now I just wait for one last option for the multi player race: NO RESPAWN option in order to bring more stress during the race.

  • I just bought the game last Sunday, and It has new tracks (16), new vehicles, and now new online play! OMG thanks to you all!

I love your work :), keep up the good work!

  • I wish there was DLC for WipEout HD. Think extra maps and ships. It’s dying for it and it would give the game much needed attention!

  • Well, updated to 1.30, game not working anymore. Nice job.

  • Just updated to 1.30 and now it doesn’ work at all! Great! Now waiting for 1.31…

  • Awesome, after the update, the game freezes on startup. Before the update everything was fine! And I’m not the only one with this problem, at least 3 people from my friends list are experiencing the same!

You can stop the freezing by signing out of PSN or deleting your old savegame, but that can’t be intended!

    Thanks for nothing, once again.
We had this bug when the game came out, now it’S back again. Fricking genius.

  • As the above posters mentioned, there’s an issue with the new update. It freezes just before the main menu is about to pop up (on the Autosave notification screen).
Deleting your save game works, but it’s not exactly the best option here…

  • After update, the game hangs on the screen where it says not to turn it of when the HDD indicator is blinking. Any fix about this?
    Using a 60GB PAL launch PS3.

  • Same issue here. hopefully they are aware of it and are creating a patch already.

  • My game hangs as well at the hard drive screen.

I agree with several posters that this game is way too hard. Gone are the days when my parents bought everything for me and I had nothing else to do but play. Games have to evolve with the audience. A 32 year old with 3 kids, mortgage etc can not afford the time anymore, even if we loved these games growing up. It just makes us move on to the next game. I am stuck at the vertigo (I think) level and just plain ol’ gave up. Maybe a hard-core/expert mode for the young peeps with time on their hands, and more realistic goals for us mere mortals.

I do appreciate the pilot assist, very well programmed.

  • Here is s work around guys. Thanks to Mazyx for part of the solution. If you signout of the PSN before loading up the game you can get by the loading screen. YOu can then sign on to the network if you go online and no issues. Then if you change your settings or something that requires a auto system save the save file will be updated and then the freezing should stop. I quit the game and started it up again logged into PSN this time no issues.

  • I actually just wanted to turn on my PS3 to see whether the update is online already, but aber reading the last few comments here, I think I’ll wait for 1.31… :/

Hopefully you guys release a patched update soon!

  • axeblade07, that works perfectly. Basically sign out of PSN, then run the game, go to online mode, read the update notes, hit connect, PSN login screen comes up so hit connect again, wait for the game to connect to the server and a new save game file will be written. After that it runs fine.

    Good work.

  • Another thanks here, for the workaround.
Mine also crashed after the update, but after disconnecting, loading the game, connecting, and I changed an audio setting to make it save, that was it.

    Works perfect now.

    Thanks guys, great thread! ;)

    Vin.

  • @CheesyMonkey

I agree that the game is very difficult and getting all the trophies is definitely a feat. But with some genuine effort over time, its very do-able. I got my Transcendence trophy a few weeks back, and I bought the game on day 1. It took a long time, but damn it felt good when I unlocked it. I value it more than any of my other platinums just because its so hard to get and not too many people are willing to shell out the practice to get it. So you should enjoy a real challenge like this. If you are willing to put in the time, you can get it man! :)

  • @axeblade07
I was just coming back here to post that, works great. Just earned a few badges online.
Oh well, as long as everybody who plays the game knows this workaround (which you only have to do ONCE) then there is no problem with the patch.
The DLC can come now. :)

  • After signing out of PSN, loading the game and signing back in make sure you go online within the game before forcing a save. Otherwise it doesn’t permanently fix the problem.

A proper fix would be nice though please sony….

  • same freeze problem here

  • Oh, great. Freezing problems.

*sign out of PSN. Auto-save after signing in through Wipeout HD again*

    Doo-dee-doo… hmm… that’s fixed.

    *starts up online*

“Error occurred while updating the game, please try again.”

Yep, online still isn’t fixed. Good job screwing up the game again, Liverpool/Sony! Back to the bottom of my playing list Wipeout HD goes until this problem is fixed.

  • @Surfaced:
Thanks for not flaming me, I appreciate your opinion. I actually do. I will be trying it again and hopefully get past the barriers.
I can’t believe you got the platinum!! That is amazing. Props to you.

Nice to have good comments and not have this degrade into arguments.

  • Glad the suggestions helped. I agree though that an official patch would be much better. I know there are probably loads of people who don’t know to check the forumns and are stratching their heads at what to do right now.

  • I’ve heard that it looks like you need to go online and sign back into the PSN once your in the game to get the work around to work. then jsut simply make a change or play online so the game saves and you should be good to go. It must validate and sign the save file in some way against your PSN ID. Sorry I missed that before. Wish I could edit my original post too.

  • when will a patch come out to fix the only connect issue i really want to play -_-

not being able to play online leaves me in dispair

  • HELP!!! I downloaded and installed the update with no problems but now the game freezes up my PS3 at the “this game saves data to the HDD, do not turn off the system when the HDD access indicator is flashing, blah blah blah” screen. Anyone else??

  • Is there an official website for this game? After downloadig the update the game now freezes every time on the first load screen.

  • Sorry, should have read the comments above. :)

  • I am having a problem with this update. I recently downloaded the patch and now when I go to launch the game, it will lock up on the loading screen. I am unable to get to the start menu.

  • After installing patch 1.30 the game freezes on the autosave screen.

  • Read higher…

  • Start WipEout HD while signed OUT of PSN.
Once the game has loaded,go to “Online” mode.
You’ll be signed back in and everything will be fine.

  • @BornToBeMild i tried that 10 times already

  • Great update! My machine now will NOT load Wipeout; it locks up consistently right after the opening FMV sequence. Gee, this is MUCH better than the version I was able to play last night. I guess even game developers can be incompetent.

  • Now that is a pretty awesome update!(although I have to admit, I’m a little shocked that some of these feature weren’t already included, like Game Invites) G-d, this just makes me want to play this game even more!

Igh…maybe I should get Wipeout Pulse to tide me over.

  • As others are stating here, my PS3 freezes where it says it’s updating the HDD.

I could delete the saved data and if that’s the fix, I guess I’ll have to, but it’s kind of sad as you have to start over again.

I’m wondering if this isn’t the same issue Wipeout had initially with having too many friends on your friends list.

The first problem with the friends list, you also had to delete the saved data….sure would be nice if there was a work around other than deleting the saved data.

  • Ok, guess I should have read a few other bloggers here, as there is a fix.

Thanks to @133 BornToBeMild for telling us how to get around this problem..

At least his suggestion worked for me.

    Here it is again:

    BornToBeMild | April 8th, 2009 at 3:42 pm

Start WipEout HD while signed OUT of PSN.

Once the game has loaded,go to “Online” mode.

You’ll be signed back in and everything will be fine.

  • You just have to be signed out of the Playstation network when you get into Wipeout after you’ve updated to 1.30.

Once you’re in the game while signed out of the network, click on the Online button on the top and it will ask you to sign into the Playstation Network..say yes and you’ll be in.

  • I’m irritated. WipEout keeps freezing up because of the update.

  • Seems like you chose your words carefully with “franchise.”

Are we getting a BD release or a new game?

  • I rescind my prior comments; the upgrade is very nicely done, san a reasonable glitch on the load part. :-)

  • cool! i hope they i had more tracks

  • first of all i love this game!!! with that being said there are a few things that i found that are bugging me… first, i installed the update and it freezes right in the middle of the autosave feature screen in the beginning… i mean completely freezes the ps3 entirely that to get anything working i have to hard stop and the reboot. it happens consistently whenever i launch wipeout (more than 5 times). my brother downloaded the update and it worked perfectly for him so i know its not a community wide issue but its really frustrating because now i cant play wipeout and i literally play it everyday. if someone can help me out it would be greatly appreciated. oh and can you bring back the eliminator races from pulse? thanks

  • @144…EVOL533D….take a look a bit above.

You’ve got 1.30 update…so now, just sign out of the Playstation Network….get into Wipeout HD….

Look at the top of the Wipeout menu.

Go to Online…it will ask you to now sign in.

Do that sign in and you should be good to go.

  • BEWARE !!
    This update kills the game.
It freezes at the HDD-warning screen.

    Do not download.

    You have been warned.

  • pffft – I just saw the fix above.

  • Thanks for the help guys.
But it would be nice with an official response, pease?

  • I downloaded the update and now, if I am signed in to the network when starting the game, my ps3 crashes (not just the game, the whole thing) does anybody know how I can fix this? I have read posts about there being previous problems for people with a lot of ps3 friends, but I only have a couple. Does anyone have a tec-support number or email address? I love this game and really want it working fully as quickly as possible!

  • Great news! I wonder: did you also happen to take care of the many bugs where you can fall right through the track?

I’m affraid after 80hours of play and earning 100% of the trophies, I’ve had my share of the game, but I love the support. I’ll test it out in a new wipeout game :)
