PSP Firmware (v5.50) Update

319 0

Hi everyone, the next system software update (v5.50) for PSP (PlayStation Portable) will be available soon, and I wanted to provide you all with a preview of some of the key features.

The firmware update will introduce an Information Board on the PSP system’s XMB (XrossMediaBar) interface. Those of you who have a PLAYSTATION 3 (PS3) may be familiar with this feature, which displays news and updates from the world of PlayStation in a scrolling ticker in the upper right-hand corner of your TV screen. Now you’ll be able to read up-to-date information about upcoming games, new content available on PlayStation Store, and other news right on your PSP whenever you’re at a wireless Internet hotspot.

In addition, we’ll be adding a few more enhancements with the 5.50 update:

  • Memory Stick improvements – You’ll be able to create and access sub-folders on your Memory Stick PRO Duo for music, videos and photos. Separately, the available space required to download a file from PlayStation Store to your Memory Stick has been reduced significantly.
  • Internet search for games directly from the XMB – You’ll be able to easily search the Internet for information about your PSP games. Select the icon for the game, hit the Triangle button, and then select [Internet Search] from the options menu to get search results based on the game title. This feature was added to PS3 with the recent 2.70 update.
  • Trend Micro trial – PSP’s Internet browser is a great tool for checking out your favorite Web sites on the go, and we’re teaming up with the Internet security experts at Trend Micro to make the Web browsing experience safer and more secure. With the 5.50 update, you’ll have the option to access a free trial of two Trend Micro services:
    1. Trend Micro Web Security uses Web reputation technology to block PSP owners from accidentally visiting a Web site that may contain malicious content designed to steal personal information and confidential data.
Trend Micro Kids’ Safety uses URL filtering technology to prevent children from accessing Web sites that feature inappropriate content.

We look forward to reading your feedback.

  • Has any one noticed that if your using the network features on the ps like say the browser.. and you choose you want to listen to the radio, use remote play, or go to the psp store you first must disconnect from the access point wait a sec then reconnect. This seems pointless personally so I would like to see the psp remain connected to the network without disconnecting when i switch between the diff network apps

but then I probably the only guy here who uses my psps network features like remote play the rss feeds, and the browser daily

also I think it would be better if instead of filling up your flash space in the psp you offed things likes skype, location free player ect as downloads off the ps store.

  • Hey Sony,

I have been reading thru the comments and have compiled a list of what I think should be added to the PSP

    – More Music Visualizers
    – Ability to Change File/Folder Names thru the PSP
    – Add Friends List with ability to send text messages, invites, and possibly voice chat from the xmb
    – Trophy Support
    – Better Compatibility with Remote Play
    – Up to Date Flash Player
    – Divx & Xvid Compatibility
    – WPA2 Security Support
    – Comic Book Reader

and some things I want to be a little more specific on such as….

    * Better Compatibility with Remote Play – Now I have a PSP 1001 with a Original 60GB PS3. My Internet Service Provider is AT&T and I am using there U-verse service which comes with a 2wire Gateway. Model # 3800HGV-B

Now appairently this Gateway is affected by whatever the problem is where the PS3 automatically turns on by itself when Remote Play via the internet is on. So unfortunatly this feature at this time is useless to me & I want to get as much out of my $800.00 + investment as I can out of my PSP & PS3.

I also would like to see sub-folder support & a Radio come to the PS3. Speaking of the PS3…

    To be Continued

  • You might be right jdude95 because Sony is never late with updates. Maybe at 8 pm pst. the update might be avalible.
On a side note why does everyone wants trophies for everything Sony makes. I personally think that they are used for bragging rights and nothing more.

  • also a camera in NA would be nice. Not the one in europe and japan but maybe a new one with a higher res.

  • the gps unit would also be useful. Think about it, you are driving while the psp is guiding you to where you want to go

  • 11PM EST still no update

  • Why don’t you add YOUTUBE SUPPORT already? I know huh? Seems like a no-brainer to me.

  • Agreed with Chuckman! The PSP should have a GPS!

  • both GPS and Youtube would be pretty cool updates for the PSP

  • As for Remote Play I have tried contacting 2wire & AT&T about it and of course they have no idea what Remote Play is. I want someone to be working on this or I would hope you would colaberate with AT&T & all other Router/Gateway producers to fix this issue instead of just putting out a “Little Disclaimer” so you don’t have to do anything about it. Then once Remote Play is up and working you could then hopefully allow us when in Remote Play to download Music & Pictures to our PSP’s wireless from any hotspot in the world. Now onto the PS3’s improvements…

    – Shuffle Option for Video’s
    – Playlist’s for Video’s
    – More Music Visualizers
    – Internet Radio like the PSP
    – Move the Battery Icon over when trying to view the time.
    – Add a Sleep Function to the Music & Video menus so you can Play Music or Movies before you go to bed and have the PS3 shut down after a certain amount of time (i.e 15,30,45,60,120 mins)

    To be continued…

  • I know this post is supposed to be about the PSP but I never am able to get a post in before at least several thousand people have posted and so I don’t think you will get to read it. So I will end this with one more I would like to see done with the PSP even though I doubt you will ever do this.

I would like to see Original PSP 1001 owners have the ability to send their PSP’s to you so you could upgrade their PSP’s to the PSP 3000’s Specs of course for a fee something like $40 or something like that. So the early adopters don’t get screwed over you could add the Video out,Mic,More Ram, while leaving the form factor the same.

Well I hope you read this and take some of my idea’s and implement them in to the PSP & PS3 firmwares.

P.S. Ohh and one more thing please try and give both the PS4 & PSP2 more Memory & Wireless N support so they can interact with each other more easily and be that much more compatible with each other.

  • Youtube is nice, but the psp is not powerful enough unless youtube or other sites makes a modified version of their sites for the psp

  • im not going to download this as soon as its out, i want to make sure there are no glitches or anything, I dont want to repeat the firmware long time ago (I think it was 3.30 or something)

  • Well it is out in my area

  • I think its funny how people say they have had troubles with some of the updates I have not had a single problem even with the PS 3 update that was withdrawn

  • good update! i still have the first PSP and am surprised how well it’s doing mwahahah

  • I haven’t had any trouble with firmware updates either. The only problem I have ever had with my PS3 is sometimes if I am using the browser & it freezes, then I have to do a Manual restart, sometimes when I turn it back on it gives me an error that says “Cannot find Correct Hardisk” then I usually restart it one more time and it goes back to the XMB.

  • the trend micro seems a little out of place, but the other features i appreciate. thanks sony ;-).

  • nice update, ty :)
i dno why, but it always gives me a buzz updating firware..

    ..maybe it’s just me

  • The information board is HARDLY informative, but I’m glad the PSP is FINALLY getting sub-folder support. When will the PS# get it though? If the PSP can do it, the PS3 can do it too. The memory stick improvement is great too. PSP downloads take up a lot of space.

  • Seems To me Like This Is A Pretty Good Update Thanks :D

  • DOWNLOADING FINALLY!!!!!!!!!!

  • I downloaded and installed the update, and nowhere I see the added feature for creating Folders… where is it??

  • chuckman315

PSPTube has proven that the homebrew community can get (most) of youtube working very well on the PSP. So it’s more a matter of if Sony wants to put the effort in while knowing they could at best use weak encryption on it. Still, hope is there for it to happen, and likely to show up on the next generation PSP.

  • we need
    PSN friend list on PSP!
    AD-Hoc Party

  • Beautiful update. That Information Board actually looks kinda neat – better than what it looked like on the PS3, and easier than trying to visit THIS blog on the PSP!

    Now to reorganize my MP3s…

  • Downloading the update right now.

  • Joke update?

You can’t create folders on the PSP and you can only go one extra level down (if you have Folder/Subfolder1/Subfolder2 you can go as deep as Subfolder1). You can’t copy files between folders either.

  • Where is the Create Folders Option? I was most excited about that feature!!!!

  • finnally sub-folder creation and accessability!
    the other features, meh lol

    request:
    update flashplayer in broswer!

  • Very nice update, im liking it!

The psp is pretty kool but i just only wish the games could of have that high quality like a ps3 but i definately dont see that coming for now…

Thanks for the update Eric!… and in the next ps3 firmware update could there be some more colors/designs for the ps3 original theme(like an update to the xmb’s design n dont get me wrong, i like the one thats there but its kinda getting old)…

  • I downloaded the update and the whole sub-folder thing is very disappointing. We are only able to go one extra folder deep. When we have a ton of files on our Memory Sticks we want to be able to organize it efficiently for example we should be able to do it like this

    Music – Genre>Artists>Album>mp3
    Movies – TV Shows>Fox>Simpsons>Season 1>MP4
    Pictures – etc…>etc…>etc…

I mean I know you guys made the effort but sometimes I wonder why you try at all. I know you guys at Sony aren’t stupid and would know that people would want more than one sub-folder to be created so we can organize our files better. I certainately expect that the next PSP firmware to rectify this error in judgement and when the PS3 gets this feature it won’t have the same problem, because if it does you really are wasting your time.

  • To be honest this Firmware doesn’t seem so WOWish. My iPod Touch is my baby and my friends are full on addicts on all the games. We play it in class and is so fun and free! (sorry for being off-topic there). Seriously the iPod Touch is one cool gadget worth using, from e-mails to games and music and applications! Now we NEED SUBFOLDERS ON PS3 and In-Game XMB Music on ALL PS3 titles, In-Game Voice chat and much more!!!!!!!
I’m about to turn on my 6 month *non-touched* PSP and update and turn it off for another few months lol.

  • Sounds like a nice update, I like it now we can create new sub folders for our music. I have an 8GB memory stick and this will come in very handy.

  • Sweet more space to put things, works for me.

  • Useless, as always. It takes you 3, 4 months to code something like an informaton board? Probably with borrowed code from the PS3 version. Get real. WTH do you guys do all day? You’re always saying that you listen to what the customer wants. We tell you what we want, and you give us useless crap like an information board? You don’t even have the balls to tell us if our requests are possible or not. Everything in this update I could have coded in a day. The only thing that matters to sony, like any other company, is money.

The good features we want will cost them money. But something like an information board takes two seconds to make plus gives them free advertising. Sounds like a win-win for them, and a lose-lose for us. Yet stupid people continue to go “GOOD JOB SONY” “Keep up the good work”. Encouraging their lazyness.

  • You cry “Why do you people mod your PSPs?” “It’s because you want free games isn’t it”. Yet, you’re too arrogant to see the real reason. People request features from PSP “homebrew” developers and they hear them. They get it to them in REASONABLE time, or EXPLAIN why it can’t be done.
    IN-game custom soundtracks…check
    Fullscreen video output…check
    Youtube support…check
    Better and faster internet browser…check
    and so forth…
Keep in mind these are coded by usually one person who has a life to live other than coding for Sony devices.

I know I will get a lot of hate for this but it had to be said. I take my PSP everywhere. I use it everyday for music whether I’m at work or at school. But I had just about enough of this. I’m getting an iTouch. As much as I hate Apple, I hate Sony more now.

  • ..im not updating…still stick with my 5.00 m33-6….

…but the subfolder support is great!!!!

    well..waiting for the next cfw….

  • YES! I’m loving this new update! I always wanted to have artists folders with the album folders inside of it, and I finally can! Hooray organization! Having to scroll through so many folders just to get somewhere was a pain! But, not anymore! YES!

  • I don’t understand why Sony wants so much for the PSP to adopt PS3 elements.

GIVE THE PSP ITS OWN DAMN IDENTITY JESUS!

    *upgraded browser w/ flash support
*at least 8 levels of subfolders (OMFG!)

Why does it seem that with all the money Sony throws at making such an EXCELLENT piece of HARDWARE, that they CRIPPLE it with such SH**** SOFTWARE!?

It’s pathetic. Customers are disappointed. Thank god for homebrew. Yes, homebrew forever.

  • Sounds good thanks for giving us free updates still. The sub folder this is great but i don’t think many of us could care less about the other things. Thanks I appreciate it but I just wish you could focus on adding better more useful things to the psp and ps3 to compete with the other consoles instead of kinda useless features like the message board and the photo gallery.

  • I have to disagree with the point of this update, and why it jumps from 5.03 to 5.50, the only considerable change at all (except the pops player sony gives us, which they don’t mention is changed, but it always seems to anyway…) is .tiff patch.

  • The new update sound really great but it wold be great to ad more video format support, and a new flash player so youtube can be watch

  • I just bought my 4th Blu-ray disc, The Spirit, and it came with a digital copy of the movie to play on my PC or portable device. Why isn’t it compatible for the PSP?! Can you guys work on that for the next update? It would make the Blu-ray disc more useful and my PSP would get more use from it.

    Thanks

  • sub folders is definitely appreciated.

  • Help!

My PSP is Japanese (X and O buttons swapped).

The XMB Info Button only allpws me to choose Japan as a location… as a result I only get Japanese info!

  • “You’ll be able to create and access sub-folders on your Memory Stick PRO Duo for music, videos and photos.”

Thamk you, thank you, thank you!!

  • Well Thats your problem for importing a Japanese PSP sorry man your stuck that way for a while till you buy a US made PSP system.

BTW: Thanks for the update! The new info bar is a snap and I love the new auto sign in feature for PSN! Also many thanks for not haveing the info bar at the top like on the PS3. This way we can look at it when ever we want to and I think I’ll be useing it for most of my PSP info!

Now all we need is for the PSP blog to be made PSP compatable! So we can sign in and post here from our PSPs!

BTW: If nothing else the PSP dose need a PSN run messegeing system. I don’t know any skype IDs and I would rather use a system supported by Sony rather then a cheap third party add on that has no rules.

  • i’m fed up with these dinky firmware updates we’ve been getting for psp and ps3, almost looks like you guy’s are giving up on your hardware and mainly… us!! can you give us an idea of what’s to come in future updates, there’s no need to keep it secret, the competition is way ahead of you anyway.
